‘I give a lot of
skincare advice for
the sun damage
conditions we
see at Canberra’s
altitude’
come in for one thing and then ask for further treatments,’ Dr Dunlop says.
‘I look at their case in overall terms of skincare, sun damage and its prevention
and from there we often progress to treatment protocols ranging from antiwrinkle
injections to vascular laser treatment for faces.’
Dr Dunlop’s service menu includes laser treatments for facial capillaries and
pigmented lesions, microdermabrasion, ultrasonophoresis vitamin infusion,
collagen production therapy through skin needling, sclerotherapy, chemical
peels, anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, as well as radiofrequency removal
of elevated skin lesions, radiofrequency skin tightening procedures and minor
surgical procedures for skin cancer excisions.
Her patients range from those wanting to improve scarring after skin cancer
removal to those wanting to refresh and recontour their face. ‘My patients all
have different concerns, some more medical related and others cosmetic. And
they range in age as well, from women 30 and beyond with sun damage to
younger patients with cosmetic concerns.’
No matter what the procedure, sometimes a minor change can make an
enormous difference. ‘During the consultation period, we talk about the patient’s
concerns and what they’ve researched,’ says Dr Dunlop. ‘Sometimes their
concern calls for something minor – a boost in self-confidence can be as simple
as a 15-minute anti-wrinkle injection treatment.’
When correcting skin conditions, Dr Dunlop uses a dual yellow light laser
with two wavelengths, which she says is very target-specific. She uses the two
wavelengths individually or in combination to target vascular blemishes, small
pigmented areas, skin tags, seborrheic keratoses and other benign skin lesions.
Dr Dunlop also offers treatments to improve skin tone and texture, such
as microdermabrasion or chemical peels combined with ultrasonophoresis,
which uses ultrasound to assist the delivery of therapeutic substances such as
Vitamins A, C and E. This can achieve significant improvements for people with
fine wrinkles, blemishes or acne scarring. The radiofrequency skin tightening
procedure is a very non-invasive way of effecting improvement along the lines
of laser skin resurfacing, but without the expense, pain, downtime, risk of skin
infection or prolonged skin reactivity.
Botulinum toxin is medically approved to treat those suffering excessive
sweating and Dr Dunlop frequently prescribes these injections for the underarms
‘A socially embarrassing and inconvenient condition, excessive sweating can
necessitate frequent changes of clothing and avoidance of all but dark clothing so
that moisture staining doesn’t show through,’ she says. ‘With botulinum usage,
however, patients can expect a marked reduction in underarm sweating for 12
months or more. It is also useful for those who grind their teeth, migraines, spasm
of eyelid muscles, stroke contractures and cerebral palsy effects in the legs.’
Dr Dunlop takes care to treat each of her patients individually and offers a very
personalised approach. As she says, each treatment does something different for
a person’s quality of life. ‘Anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, microdermabrasion
and chemical peels all fall into the new life-enhancing categories of treatment,’
she says. ‘I often combine these for a patient – my goal is to help people feel
comfortable and enjoy the skin they’re in.’
