AUSTRALIA’S FIRST URBAN
WELLNESS HOTEL TO OPEN
IN MELBOURNE
Australia’s fastest growing hotel and
urban wellness operator, The Hotel
& Wellness Co, has revealed exciting
plans to launch the country’s first urban
thermal bathing and wellness hotel.
Commencing with the
transformation of Melbourne’s The
Kinson, co-founders Ben Anderson
and Jamie Srubis, in partnership
with Peninsula Hot Springs, are on a
mission to create urban environments
for wellbeing and human connection
through spaces that foster communities
of mindfulness and relaxation.
The transformed The Kinson hotel
will boast a unique thermal bathing
experience that underpins a broader
curated wellness offering that includes
a top floor of various urban bathing
spaces, sensory zones, a Hamman, and
lounge area. Following the company’s
principles to offer an authentic wellness
experience, the hotel will also offer
reflexology, sauna, daybeds, a broad
range of transitional First Nations
medicinal spa treatments, plus aligned
food and beverages.
Working directly with Peninsula
Hot Springs, mineral salts from
the geothermal hot springs will be
extracted for use within the hotel’s
bathing spaces, replicating the mineral
content and therapeutic benefits of a
natural hot spring, in an urban context.
Supported by science, the therapeutic
benefits of naturally occurring mineral
waters can include improved sleep,
reduction of arthritis symptoms,
detoxification, promotion of healthy
skin, improved muscle and bone health,
and reduction of high blood pressure.
The Kinson’s transformation will
commence in the coming months,
with the anticipated launch of the
wellness hotel slated for early 2025.
RITA ORA LAUNCHES TYPEBEA, A NEW
HAIRCARE BRAND FOR HAIR GROWTH
Rita Ora and global beauty entrepreneur Anna
Lahey have combined forces to create TYPEBEA –
a high-performing haircare brand for hair growth
and health for all hair types.
For founders Ora and Lahey, TYPEBEA has
been three years in the making. The two first
connected through Lahey’s marine collagen
brand, Vida Glow, which soon gave way to a
passion for haircare derived from their personal
experiences of extreme hair loss and damage. In
navigating their own challenges and witnessing
first-hand the detrimental impact hair can have
on self-confidence, the founders saw the need for
effective, clean haircare for optimum hair health.
TYPEBEA is designed to offer both sensorial
luxury, with rich lathers and bespoke fragrances,
and clinically backed results. The range is powered
by Baicapil, an active proven to reduce hair loss by
up to 60% in just 3 months.
Available for purchase as of 18th April in
Australia (Sephora Australia and David Jones),
the UK and US, the range consists of a shampoo,
conditioner, treatment mask and an overnight
peptide scalp serum. All products have been
formulated with clean, sulphate-, paraben- and
silicone-free ingredients and scalp care actives for
visibly thicker, stronger, longer hair across a wide
range of styles, textures and types.
SHEAMOISTURE AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES THE
2024 SHEACHANGEMAKERS WINNERS
SheaMoisture Australia has announced the
winners of the 2024 SheaChangemakers initiative,
an annual campaign dedicated to celebrating
and empowering melanin-rich and First Nations
women who are making a positive impact in their
communities. The SheaChangemakers campaign
is more than just a competition; it’s a platform to
recognise and amplify the voices of individuals
dedicated to making a difference through
their innovative projects, advocacy efforts and
unwavering commitment to social change.
The 2024 winners, Tigist Kebede and Nasalifya
Namwing, were honoured at a celebration
held at Sydney’s 12-Micron. Nasalifya, a clinical
psychologist, and Tigist, a trauma counsellor,
created Pola Practice, a mental health service
ensuring that support, especially for the most
marginalised, is accessible for all across Australia
and New Zealand.
Nasalifya says, ‘From humble beginnings in
2019 with just two practitioners, we are now the
largest privately owned practice run by two Black
women. We are defying odds and demonstrating
that mental healthcare focussing on the most
marginalised can create a tidal wave of change that
breaks cultural and systemic barriers. Today we host
more than 20 intersectionally and professionally
diverse mental health clinicians, serving over 1,000
hours of free wellbeing services to community
members across Australia and New Zealand.
‘Winning this $10,000 prize will enable us
to continue our work in supporting the most
marginalised members of the community, funding
free one-on-one and group sessions, allowing their
community to access support in ways they feel
most comfortable and most importantly reach more
people in need,’ adds Tigist.
In addition to Nasalifya and Tigist, five runnersup
also received $2,000 each to assist them in their
endeavours: Karinda Eggington, Lueth Garang,
Kaiyu Moura, Ruby Wharton and Ano Matope.
SheaMoisture, a leading global brand in natural
and organic hair care and body care, is committed
to its community and to creating new possibilities
and opportunities, from community commerce
that gives directly back to the communities where
products are grown and harvested, to significant
investment, via both financial and mentorship, for
the next generation of business owners.
ZO SKIN HEALTH COMPLEX A+ SERUM
COMES TO AUSTRALIA
ZO Skin Health, one of the most advanced
medical-grade skincare brands in the
world, has officially launched its Complex
A+ Serum in Australia.
Complex A+ Serum is a maximumconcentration,
high-potency retinol that
targets the skin’s deeper layers to assist
in improving severe signs of ageing,
including wrinkles, skin sagging and laxity,
and sun damage. It is clinically proven to
significantly improve signs of skin ageing
within 12 weeks.
ZO ® Skin Health’s microemulsion
technology is a key differentiating factor,
creating a unique delivery system that
rapidly releases active ingredients to the
skin’s deeper layers for profound results.
Complex A+ is further enhanced with
bakuchiol to amplify the benefits of retinol,
while Vitamins A, C and E help to minimise
future damage from oxidative stress.
Glycerin and sodium hyaluronate help to
promote skin hydration and improve the
skin barrier.
This is maximum-strength retinol
and is specifically formulated to induce
anticipated reactions such as redness,
flaking, peeling and tightness to deliver
superior results. As such, it is important
to acclimatise to this product to help
minimise redness and irritation. Good
candidates are those who have been
using retinol and would like to increase
their protocol intensity, and those who
need stronger pre-conditioning before
advanced in-office skin procedures.
ZO ® Skin Health products are designed
to be used as part of a practitioner-led skin
health regimen and are only sold through
authorised clinics.
BIORÉ PARTNERS WITH
DR YUMIKO KADOTA
Bioré recently introduced its newest
brand ambassador, Dr Yumiko
Kadota. The Sydney-based cosmetic
physician is also an influencer,
creator and author and has amassed
millions of views on TikTok sharing
her skincare tips.
Having used Bioré Pore strips for
over a decade, Dr Yumiko is excited
to partner with the number-one pore
strip brand. ‘Over the past 10 years,
Bioré has always been my consistent
go-to for skincare. From when I was
a young adult to now, Bioré has
always been a reliable brand for
achieving fantastic results,’ she says.
Bioré is joining the rise of self-care,
and Australians are embracing more
wellness and self-care rituals with
their Pore Strips. These strips are
specially formulated and designed
to lift out the entire pore plug, not
just the top of the blackhead.
Using patented C-bond
technology, with the ‘C’ standing for
cationic bond, they are designed to
bind to the blackheads and not your
skin. Activated by water, these bonds
turn Bioré pore strips into a magnet
for blackheads. A wetted pore strip
has an overall positive (or cationic)
charge which can then effectively
connect with pore plugs – which
have an overall negative charge. The
result is an instant deep clean with
a reduction in the appearance of
pores with regular use.
Bioré Pore Strips are cruelty-free,
dermatologist-tested, vegan-friendly
and are available at Priceline,
Chemist Warehouse, Coles and
Woolworths.
NEW AUSTRALIAN-MADE
SKINCARE FOR COMBO SKIN
Inspired by the rich flora of Australia,
Leitin skincare has just launched
out of Gippsland, Victoria. The luxe
gender-neutral products are designed
to revitalise dry and dehydrated skin
with ingredients that dive deep into
the skin’s layers. What makes this
range extra special is that it caters
to the unique concerns of both oily
and dry skin simultaneously – Leitin’s
innovative oil-based formulations not
only nourish dry skin but also help to
balance oily zones in such a way that it
defies the norm.
EASY
MAKEUP
TRENDS TO
SLAY ALL
WINTER
WINTER IS ON HER WAY AND IT’S TIME TO
ELEVATE YOUR BEAUTY GAME WITH FROSTY
EYES, CHERRY-RED LIPS AND FLUSHED BLUSH.
With the weather cooling down,
now is the perfect opportunity to
change up your makeup to match
your winter wardrobe. Bianca Downward, YSL
Beauty National Makeup Artist, fills us in on the
coolest winter makeup trends for 2024.
‘Frosted, shimmery, cool-toned eye makeup
is what we’ll be seeing this winter,’ says Bianca.
‘Drawing inspiration from the 90s, shades of
blue, lilac and silver will be washed over the
eye to create an icy look.’
YSL Beauty just launched its Couture Mini
Clutches eyeshadow palettes, $117. Try
Babylone Roses or Trocadero Nights for the
ultimate cool girl makeup.

Red lips are a classic and we’ll be seeing
a lot more of them this season, according
to Bianca. ‘Deep red and cherry tones
are trending. Ombre lips are also making
a comeback. Try my favourite YSL lip
combo for a deep cherry ombre lip: apply
Crushliner, $63, in shade one to the lip line
and blend softly towards the centre of the
lip for a gradient effect. Finish the lip with
Rouge Volupté Candy Glaze Lipstick in
shade 7, $68. As for texture, both matte and
gloss will be trending this season.
Blush is also here to stay. Rosy-pink tones
are perfect for creating a flushed, youthful
appearance to the cheek. ‘Don’t be shy
with your application as “over blushing” is a
trend we will be seeing this winter season,’
says Bianca.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 31

BEAUTY
For a super-hydrated appearance, try
using a lip product on the cheek to create
a subtle glow. YSL’s Rouge Pur Couture
lipstick in shade Pink Muse, $68, is
perfect for this.
Bianca says the upcoming winter
trends are all about adding colour to the
complexion, whether it’s flushed cheeks or
bold lips. And don’t be afraid to match and
clash colour this winter.
‘My number-one makeup tip for this
winter (for all seasons really), is to ensure
skin is well hydrated,’ she says. ‘Good skin
prep is key, especially around the eye area
when using frosted finishes as they can
highlight uneven texture. YSL’s Pure Shots
Eye Reboot Concentrate, $130, is ideal
for prepping the eye area before makeup.
The cream-to-serum formula hydrates
the skin without leaving it feeling heavy
or greasy. Plus, the light-defusing micro
pearls within the product help to minimise
the appearance of fatigue, providing an
awakened, refreshed look.’ CBM

WE CHAT WITH HAIR
STYLIST ASH CROKER
ON FIXING THE FALLOUT
FROM FRAZZLED SUMMER
HAIR AND WHAT HAIR
COLOURS WILL BE ON
TREND THIS WINTER.
Sun, swimming and excessive heat styling
can play a number on the health and
appearance of our hair. If we’re not
careful, the damage we accumulate during
summer can carry over into the winter, leaving
us with dry, brittle, lacklustre locks.
Ash Croker, founder of The Salon by Ash
Croker in Clovelly, and one of Sydney’s top hair
stylists, says the condition of her clients’ hair is
her top priority.
‘Following a summer of sun and swimming,
clients often present with noticeable metal and
mineral build-up, as well as signs of sun damage
and colour fading. These effects can lead to
hair feeling brittle and prone to splitting,’
she explains.
& heavy
metal
Metal particles in water, such as copper, can
build up in hair fibers and cause hair breakage,
as well as contributing to coarse, dull hair. To
get hair back on track, Ash says a hair treatment
regime essential. She recommends L’Oréal’s
Metal Detox range, from $58.50, which helps
to trap and neutralise metals in the hair, and
Kerastase Genesis Anti Hair-fall Fortifying
Serum, $92, three times a week to help activate
hair growth.
‘L’Oréal have also just launched their new
Absolut Repair Molecular treatment,’ she adds.
‘Packed with peptides and amino acids, this
treatment can repair two years of damage
in one application. It is great for anyone
experiencing colour damage as it helps rebuild
the hair shaft and take out any frizz.’
Hair gloss treatments can also work wonders.
‘DIA Light by L’Oréal, an acid-based gel-crème
gloss treatment not only enhances shine but
also provides conditioning benefits to the hair
and offers a top-up of colour vibrancy,’ says Ash.
‘What’s more, its effects last up to 20 washes.’
‘I also highly recommend a supplement like
Vida Glow’s Hairology,’ she adds. ‘This will
help combat any hair shedding and fallout.
Additionally, it’s important to look after your
scalp, especially during the cooler, dryer
months. Adding a scalp serum to your regimen
3 times a week will help act as a hair hydrator
and hair-loss preventative.’ CBM
What’s
BEAUTY
trending
in hair this
winter?
‘We’re seeing cheek bangs and a resurgence
of bobs and French styles in general. For
longer hair, longer layers and a more relaxed
style is trending,’ shares Ash.
As for colour, trends for winter typically
reflect the season’s mood and fashion trends,
she says. This season’s winter trends include
chocolates, caramels and cool-toned blondes.
‘Ultimately, the best hair colour for you
will depend on your personal style, skin
tone and preferences. It’s always a good
idea to consult with a professional colourist
to find the perfect winter hue for you,’
says Ash.
Rich
brunettes
Deep, chocolatey browns and
espresso tones, offering warmth
and sophistication.
Cool-toned
blondes
Icy blondes and platinum shades
evoke the coolness of winter, adding a
touch of elegance to your look.
Warm
caramel
highlights
Adding caramel highlights to
darker hair creates dimension and
warmth, perfect for brightening up
your look during the colder months.
38 www.cosbeauty.com.au

Red
velvet
Rich, velvety reds, such as
burgundy and deep cherry, add
a bold and luxurious touch to
winter hair colour palettes.
Ashy
tones
Ashy dark blondes and cool-toned
browns provide a soft, muted
look that complements the cooler
weather and adds a modern twist
to traditional colours.
Smokey
pastels
Soft pastel hues with a smoky
undertone, like dusty rose or lavender,
offer a subtle yet striking look that’s
perfect for the winter season.
Behind the
BEAUTY
FREEZEFRAME
phenomenon
FROM UNIVERSITY START-UP
TO GLOBAL SUCCESS, WE
CHART THE RISE AND RISE OF
FREEZEFRAME FOUNDER AND
OWNER SONIA AMOROSO.
Sonia Amoroso is one of Australia’s
most dynamic beauty entrepreneurs
and skincare innovators. With a
pedigree of breakthrough beauty and
wellness products, she has made it her
mission to help women overcome the most
common beauty challenges with effective,
science-backed solutions.
Amoroso is perhaps best known as the
mastermind behind freezeframe, one of
Australia’s best-selling clinical skincare
brands, which she launched in 2009, but her
journey started long before freezeframe.
Sonia has been developing breakthrough
beauty products for more than 20 years and
has been responsible for some of the bestselling
skincare products in Australian history.
freezeframe ambassador Sonia Kruger
42 www.cosbeauty.com.au

Amoroso’s first startup was while she
was studying at the University of Technology,
Sydney, where she was studying for a BA
in communications, majoring in journalism
and advertising. It was during this time,
with the help of a cosmetic chemist, that
she successfully developed her own range
of skincare products, and in the process
introduced two health and beauty brands
into the Australian market – Naturopathica
(including the popular FatBlaster weightloss
supplement) and Skin Doctors
Cosmeceuticals. By the time her uni days
were done, it was becoming clear that
Amoroso knew how to tap into the mindset
of women and find solutions.
Following the sale of Naturopathica and
Skin Doctors Cosmeceuticals in 2006, she
founded Self Care Corporation. Seeing a
gap in the market for clinical-grade solutions
to everyday beauty problems, Amoroso
www.cosbeauty.com.au 43

BEAUTY
introduced freezeframe in 2009, with their
breakthrough ‘instant freeze and lift’ product,
INHIBOX. It was the first instant ‘Botox
alternative’ skincare on the market and was a
huge success, with women lined up outside
the doors of Myer to purchase one.
Driven by innovation and a focus on
addressing common beauty concerns rather
than skincare regimens, the freezeframe
brand added to its portfolio of products
and quickly gained prominence, becoming
Australia’s top-selling brand in its category.
Their hero product, REVITALEYES, achieved
an impressive feat by securing the numberone
spot in the eye cream category for four
consecutive years.
Freezeframe’s latest game-changer is the
48-hour Wrinkle Freeze Ice Roller Mask, with
Sonia Kruger as the ambassador for the new
product. The anti-ageing ice mask, which
launched in early 2024, combines innovative
peptide technology with a built-in ice roller
for dramatically smoother-looking skin in 30
minutes that lasts up to 48 hours.
The brand’s global success is further
underscored by its popularity in China, Hong
Kong, New Zealand and the UK, along with
remarkable growth in Australia.
Amoroso’s mission is to help women lead
confident lives by solving the most common
eauty problems. She says one of the most
memorable comments from her customers
was from a woman who had undergone
chemotherapy and had lost all of her
eyelashes. She started using Lash Prescription
which helped her regain her lashes and also
her confidence.
Amoroso has a slew of awards and accolades
under her belt – including the EY Young
Entrepreneur of the Year, Business Woman of
the Year Award and Sydney Graduate School
of Management MBA Scholarship. Not content
with being the queen of beauty innovations,
in 2020 she was the executive producer on the
film Penguin Bloom, starring Naomi Watts.
Looking ahead, the future continues to
shine bright for Amoroso, with ongoing
product developments and a steadfast focus
on remaining at the forefront of skincare
innovation.
Freezeframe products are sold online as well
as in Priceline, Chemist Warehouse and Terry
Be a multi-tasker
1.
We love a handy double-duty product, especially when beauty luggage
space is at a premium. A versatile, multi-use stick for lips, cheeks and eyes
is a travel-friendly option that saves space and allows for easy touch-ups.
Also look for tinted serums and multi-purpose face and body balms to
help lighten your load. Swap your full-coverage foundation for a tinted
moisturiser or BB cream with SPF. These lighter alternatives will help even
out your skin tone while treating your skin to an extra dose of hydration.
Ditch single eye colours and limit yourself to one compact palette which
can be used to create a number of looks (the eyeshadows can even work
as brow enhancers). A simple palette with at least three colours will allow
you to mix shades. This will let you have the option to pull off a natural
or glam look anytime and anywhere around the globe. Let your location
inspire you!
What to take
on the plane
How do you keep your skin glowing despite the arid
environment of an airplane? An emergency kit is a must
to protect your skin against the in-flight elements. Pack a
refreshing face mist, makeup wipes, cleanser, moisturiser and
lip balm. Bring on a travel pot of concealer to mask tired eyes
or dull skin for when you descend.
Look for a cosmetics case roomy enough to fit all your
staple essentials. One with a structured shape (so that it’s
easy enough to smoosh into your suitcase or carry-on) and a
protective casing inside will prevent liquids from leaking.
Sun protection
BEAUTY
the MVP of your
beauty kit
It goes without saying that it’s essential to double down
on sunscreen as you’re heading to warmer locales this
winter. Choose a lightweight, non-greasy formula that offers
both UVA and UVB protection to guard your skin against
sunburn and premature ageing. Reapply every two hours for
optimal protection.
Lips are often overlooked in sun care routines. A hydrating
lip balm with SPF will protect your lips from harmful rays and
keep them soft and supple as you sip on your Aperol Spritz.
If you want to get your glow on, always go faux. Bronzing
serums, tanning drops and instant self-tan mousses will give
you radiant, glowing skin without sacrificing the health of
your skin.
FOR
SUN-DAMAGED
SKIN
FROM ‘SALMON SPERM INJECTIONS’ TO
CULT SKINCARE FAVES, BEHOLD THE SUPER
SKIN HYDRATORS READY TO GET YOUR SKIN
BACK ON TRACK. RICKY ALLEN REPORTS.
Many of us are still attempting to
normalise our skin after a long hot
summer, as sun-damaged, dry skin
leaves its tell-tale dullness, blotchiness, lines
and wrinkles behind.
It’s time to up the ante, so I decided to
pay a visit with Dr Raquel Zanetti, an
aesthetic physician at All Saint Clinic in
Double Bay, Sydney.
Dr Zanetti is experienced in a variety of nonsurgical
aesthetic procedures – but she doesn’t
just rush in with a needle for the ubiquitous
temporary lift and plump. Instead, she is known
for her holistic, personalised approach, which
always starts with the skin.
‘My patients are definitely more focused on
the health and appearance of their skin rather
than looking years younger – but of course
when your skin looks great you do tend to look
younger anyway,’ she says.

‘It’s a good idea to have a preventative
plan starting from a younger age rather
than only seeking help when you have
more pronounced skin damage.’
Dr Zanetti suggests a good skincare
plan for a 12-month period followed by 2-3
treatments sessions a year to help get skin
back on track. The treatments may include
lasers and injectables, but always skincare
as the base.
A new breed of cosmetic injectables,
often referred to as bioremodellers or skin
boosters, are gaining popularity amongst
both injectors and patients for their naturallooking,
glow-from-within results.
These injectable bioremodellers work
on a cellular level to deeply moisturise and
nourish the skin from within, helping to
promote the production of new collagen
and elastin and replenish hyaluronic acid
levels. Unlike traditional dermal fillers that
add volume or target specific areas, skin
booster injectables aim to provide a more
holistic rejuvenation by revitalising the
entire face. The results of these treatments
are often a more hydrated, rejuvenated and
glowing complexion, with skin that is firmer
and more even in texture and tone.
The latest bioregenerating injectable
is Rejuran. It is a gel formulation of
polynucleotides, composed of wild
salmon DNA fragments extracted through
proprietary DOT technology (DNA
Optimising Technology). Rejuran’s bioactive
DNA molecules stimulate restoration
and help repair damaged skin, concurrently
reducing unwanted inflammation. It
has been dubbed the ‘salmon sperm
injections’, with celebrities like Jennifer
Aniston reportedly having the treatment
weekly to help counter the effects of
ageing skin.
BEAUTY
I next spoke with Natalija Hallert and Rajja Richani, both
MUAs and national trainers for Cosmax Prestige Brands,
which distributes a range of superior skincare brands.
‘Post-summer skin can look a little defeated,’ says Hallert.
‘My hero products to help reverse the appearance of dry
and damaged skin include Nuxe Super Serum [10], $132
and Nuxe Huille Prodigieuse Dry Oil, $67.’
Richani says skin inflammation and congestion are key
concerns for his clients. ‘These conditions are often caused
by increased perspiration, excess sebum production as well
as environmental issues,’ he says.
Richani recommends exfoliating masks in addition
to soothing and reparative products to promote skin
rejuvenation and healing such as Guerlain Arbeille Royale
Double R Renew & Repair Advanced Serum, $358.
‘In the colder months, richer and more nourishing
products as well as those containing high levels of
hyaluronic acid are benficial,’ he says.
‘But,’ he advises, ‘we should all be routinely assessing
our skincare needs and modifying our skincare regime
accordingly, not just between seasons.’ CBM

FRAGRANCE EVALUATOR,
FRAGRANCES OF THE WORLD
Fragrance preferences are very individual, so
personal taste comes into what we start using
as the weather cools down. Generally, we
associate warmer notes like wood, amber, musk
and spices with cooler months, and sometimes
the sweeter gourmand notes such as vanilla,
caramel and sugar.
The heat of our skin in warmer months can
accelerate the development of the fragrance
on our skin. The extra surface moisture on the
skin from humidity and sweat can also change
the way fragrance smells but it does not alter
the structure of it. In cooler weather we wear
more layers of clothing and fragrance often
has to compete with those layers and there is
less body heat to diffuse the scent. This is why
we naturally tend to choose slightly stronger
fragrances. We also have a tendency to apply
fragrance more often in the cooler weather.
Changing fragrances seasonally is like
changing food seasonally. It isn’t essential,
but embracing the weather makes you feel
more connected to the world in a beautiful way
– like eating refreshing granita in the sun
or decadent chocolate cake by an open fire.
So, if your fragrance is discordant with your
changing fragrance desires, you may find that
you tend to stop wearing that fragrance as
much or altogether.
Dry woods and iris are some of the best
notes to wear as the weather starts to cool
down. Amber and gourmand fragrances work
well in the heart of winter when the days are
the coolest. As well, our skins tend to dry out
at that time of the year so they do not hold
scent as well as there is not as much natural oil
to cling to. You can try to help this problem by
using unscented moisturisers which will help our
fragrance to stay on and last. CBM
COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT

Why
Australians
are choosing
cosmetic
injectables
IN THE QUEST FOR SELF-CONFIDENCE AND
IMPROVED SELF-ESTEEM, MORE AUSTRALIANS
ARE TURNING TO COSMETIC INJECTABLES, A
RECENT STUDY REVEALS.
Commissioned by Merz Australia and
conducted by Metis Healthcare Research, an
Australia-wide survey titled ‘Understanding
the mindset and motivations of patients
seeking treatment with cosmetic injectables’ shines
a light on the deep connection between our physical
appearance and how we feel about ourselves.
The survey involved 924 participants, consisting of
those who have received cosmetic injections within the
past year (700 patients; 85% female, 15% male) and
those who ‘are seriously considering cosmetic injections
but have not yet made a decision’ (224 patients;
79% female, 21% male). The survey found the direct
correlation between physical appearance and a patient’s
sense of self holds ‘great importance, as appearance
profoundly influences self-esteem and self-confidence’.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 79

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
Confidence
SOCIAL LIFE & SOCIAL MEDIA
It can be argued the reasons individuals
seek cosmetic injections go beyond mere
aesthetics and encompass emotional and
social factors. The survey highlighted that
boosting confidence and enhancing selfesteem
‘become major driving forces across
all age groups’.
A staggering 84% of respondents
acknowledge the impact of physical
appearance on their self-image. This
sentiment is especially pronounced amongst
younger participants under 50.
About 54% of individuals feel their
appearance influences their confidence in
social scenarios, with a noticeable emphasis
within the 18-29 age group. Furthermore,
more than half view their looks as closely
tied to their mental health and personal
relationships.
The survey noted that, among those
currently seriously considering cosmetic
injections:
• 85% believe their confidence will improve;
• 75% believe they will feel more confident
to attend social events;
• 76% believe their overall mood will
improve; and
• 69% believe they will be happier.
The survey noted motivations for
considering cosmetic injections based on
physical aspects tend to vary with age. As
individuals grow older, the focus shifts from
desiring to enhance or improve perceived
‘flaws’ or undesirable features to seeking
restoration or rejuvenation.
Decisions to undergo cosmetic
procedures are often inspired by friends,
family or social media. In response to the
question ‘who led or prompted you to
consider cosmetic injections’:
• friends, family or colleagues influenced
51% of the 18-29 group, 47% of 30-49
group and 40% of those 50+; and
• social media influencers or celebrities
affected 36% of the 18-29 group, 22% of
30-49 group and 9% of those 50+.
The survey reported both a ‘strong
emphasis on physical appearance’ and
‘recognition of societal influence’, overall.
To the statement ‘the way people are
perceived depends heavily on their physical
appearance’, 71% agreed (77% of those
aged 50+).
To the statement ‘life is easier for people
who are physically attractive’, 76% agreed
(79% of those aged 18-29).
To the statement ‘societies’ beauty
standards have a strong influence on how
I feel about my appearance’, 63% agreed
(72% of those aged 18-29).

The new
BEAUTY
REGIMEN?
Across all age brackets, a significant portion of
participants views cosmetic injectables as integral
to their beauty regimen, with many planning to
increase their use.
In the survey, 62% of those aged 30-49 reported
that ‘I get cosmetic injections as part of my beauty
routine’ – and 46% of that age group intend to
increase their use of cosmetic injections over the
next five years.
Similarly, it found 56% of those aged 50+
reported cosmetic injections are now ‘part of my
beauty routine’ – and 27% of that group also intend
to increase their use of cosmetic injections over the
next five years.
And among the younger 18-29 user group, 47%
confirmed cosmetic injections are now ‘part of my
beauty routine’ – and 34% of that group also
intend to increase their use of cosmetic injections
over the next five years.
Notably, the survey also explored barriers to
choosing injectables, with financial constraints and
fears of unnatural-looking results topping the list
of concerns.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 81

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
Mental
HEALTH DISORDERS HIGH AMONG
COSMETIC PATIENTS
The survey highlighted an alarming link between mental
health issues, such as anxiety and mood disorders, and
the pursuit of cosmetic treatments, especially among
younger individuals.
The study found 59% of 18- to 29-year-old patients
seeking treatment with cosmetic injectables are
experiencing symptoms of mental health disorders.
Among that cohort, 40% reported having been medically
diagnosed with anxiety disorder – and a further 36% were
currently experiencing symptoms of this condition.
In addition, 28% of the 18-29 group had been medically
diagnosed with a mood disorder (eg, depression or bipolar
disorder) – and a further 23% were currently experiencing
symptoms of these conditions.
The survey also found that among the older 30-49 group,
41% had similarly been medically diagnosed and/or were
currently experiencing symptoms of combinations of the
same list of mental health disorders.
Even among older patients aged 50+, 32% of those
seeking treatment with cosmetic injectables had previously
been medically diagnosed and/or were currently
experiencing symptoms of one of those same disorders.

On a positive note, when those currently receiving
injections were asked how feelings towards their own physical
appearance have ‘changed over the course of your life’:
• 55% of those aged 18-29 reported more positive feelings;
and
• 47% of those aged 30-49 reported more positive feelings.
The survey also noted the benefits of cosmetic injections
often go beyond aesthetics – resulting in ‘perceived, and
often significant, psychological benefits’, notably in ‘selfconfidence,
self-esteem and mood’. Among those currently
receiving cosmetic injections, 93% reported improvement in
self-confidence, 87% reported improvement in self-esteem or
feelings of self-worth, and 85% reported feeling happier. CBM
