FROM THE
EDITOR
Welcome to our March issue.
As many of you may already be aware, there’s been a few
changes here at Velvet. Iliffe Media, based in Cambridge are
our new owners and I am staying with the magazine. Other
than a change in hands, everything else about the magazine
will be remaining the same.
Iliffe have acquired Velvet and iQ magazine from Gemma and
John Treby, who launched the magazine nearly 10 years ago.
Gemma and John have decided to focus on their awardwinning
design and marketing agency Cubiqdesign, which
has seen rapid growth over the last 6 months. I’d like to thank
both John and Gemma for giving me the opportunity to move
forwards with the magazine as I’m really excited about what’s
to come!
Alongside this, it’s been a busy month as always as we look
forward to spring. This issue has lots of foodie excitement as
we near Easter, as well as ideas on how to treat your Mum
this Mother’s Day (page 32). Take a look at page 35 for other
things going on in the local area this month too.
I was also lucky enough to attend London Fashion Week this
year so look out for my future features on beauty and fashion
trends for next season. For now, I’ve given a quick rundown as
to what we can expect for A/W17. Check out page 52.
Happy reading!
British
Pie Week
Following on from the success of ‘Skip’s Pop-Up Pie
Shop’ at Cambridge Chop House in January this year,
their sister restaurant St John’s Chop House will be
serving two special pies for British Pie Week this year!
Andrew Skipper, Head Chef at Cambridge Chop House
has given us his recipe for a delicious beef pie
you can make at home!
Makes 4-6 individual pies
FOR THE FILLING:
• A little vegetable oil
• 500g diced beef
• 1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
• 3 sticks of celery, finely chopped
• 1 carrot, finely chopped
• 1 tin of chopped tomatoes
• Salt and pepper
• 1 pint of beef stock
FOR THE PASTRY:
• 250g unsalted butter, cold & diced
• 500g plain flour
• Pinch of salt
• Water enough to bind
• 1 medium egg
TO MAKE THE FILLING:
Heat the vegetable oil in a thick
based pan and caramelise the
beef until golden brown on
all sides. Add the chopped
onions, celery, carrot and
tomatoes. Season with salt
and pepper, add the stock
and cook on a low heat with
a lid on for 90 minutes or
until the meat is tender.
Remove from the heat and
set aside to cool.
Cambridge, CB2 1SJ
www.cambscuisine.com
TO MAKE THE PASTRY:
Rub together the butter
and flour with the salt until
it resembles breadcrumbs.
Bind together with a little cold
water until you have a dough,
being careful not to overwork.
Leave the pastry to rest for 30
minutes in the fridge, wrapped
in cling film to stop it drying out.
Pre-heat the oven to 180°C / 160°C
(fan) /Gas Mark 4. Roll out the pastry
to a thickness of 0.5cm, then place the pie
dish upside down on the pastry and cut out
the lids. Shape the rest of the pastry into the
mould by hand to a thickness of 0.5 cm. Fill with
the pie mix and top with the lids. Crimp the pastry
edges together around the rim and trim off any excess
using a small knife.Brush the lid with the egg wash using a
pastry brush.Bake in the pre-heated oven for 30 minutes or until
the pastry is golden brown. Serve hot with mash & gravy or liquor.
National Butchers’ Week
13th - 19th March
POWTERS
Powters is one of many butchers who will be celebrating National
Butchers’ Week with tastings, promotions and other events to
promote the benefits of using a good butchers shop.
With the so called ‘food revolution’ well underway, shoppers
are far more choosey about what meat they cook with, where
it comes from and most importantly - the quality of it. People
are looking for exciting and original products which offer tasty
modern twists. The growing popularity of restaurant and fast food
eating has made consumers aware of many alternative ways of
preparing and cooking meats – but they don’t necessarily want
the inconvenience, neither can they spare the time to create
these at home. This is where an artisan butcher comes in. They
have detailed knowledge and source their meats locally to give
assurance as to where the meat comes from and how it was
raised.
At Powters some of the most popular meat products are ‘kitchen
ready’ which means that we have trimmed and prepared them,
adding other ingredients so that all that remains is to place them
in the oven or grill. These include world-inspired flavours which
add a twist to traditional cuts.
With summer just around the corner BBQ favourites include
pork satay, lamb kebabs and burgers but sausages have always
been the biggest attraction for Powters customers.
The best-selling Newmarket Sausage we have now been making
for an incredible five generations, since 1881!
We’ve branched out now and have many tasty alternatives. Our
Chilli Pig is a mild chilli flavoured sausage, ‘Scrumpy pig’ is made
with cider and sage herbs, Tipsy Pig is a really rather good pork
and ale sausage and our Skinny Pig low fat sausage weighs in at
under 3% fat and only half a Slimming World Syn!
ELVEDEN COURTYARD BUTCHERY
“From the beginning, our in-house butchery has always been
one of the attractions of visiting our Food Hall. Our butchers
have striven to maintain an interesting choice of cuts of the best
home-reared, and local meat presented in a most appetising
display. In addition, the provenance we offer particularly of
our own estate wild venison is second to none. Game when
in season, rabbits, goat and even squirrel have all graced our
butchery counter over the years. One or two of these having
been the source of some inspiring and entertaining customer
conversations regarding recipes!
Always popular of course, our range of homemade sausages
seems to get bigger all the time thanks to one of the butchery
team who simply loves making them! The choice of homemade
burgers is pretty good to.
At Christmas (a little early perhaps) but still good to know, we
can offer you free range Norfolk Bronze and black turkeys,
geese, ducks and chickens all of which can become one amazing
multi-stuffed bird if that is your wish. So whether your seeking
one of our chicken breasts in a mouthwatering sauce or an entire
venison fillet, one of our butchers will be on hand 7 days a week
to help.”
Fancy cooking up a
courtesy of
Phil Skinner, chef at
The Northgate… At Home!
INGREDIENTS:
• 100g of pork loin per person
• 1 shoulder of pork
• 2 litres of good quality beek stock
• 500g mirepiox (carrot, celery, onion
and leek roughly cut)
• 75g tomato puree
• 1 bottle of red wine
• 1 baby pear peeled, cooked seeds
removed
• 1 spring onion
• 200g of cooked potato
• 50ml of double cream
• 50g butter
• 1 spring cabbage leaf
• Pork skin
The Northgate
Northgate Street, Bury St Edmunds
IP33 1HP. Tel: 01284 339604
www.thenorthgate.com
METHOD:
• Trim all the sinew from the loin and pan fry in a hot pan until all sides are coloured.
Place in the oven for 3-4 minutes, then allow to rest. Reheat under the grill before
serving.
• Fry the pork shoulder in a heavy bottomed pan until brown on each side. Remove the
shoulder and add the mirepoix to the pan. Cook this until all of the veg has browned.
Add the tomato purée and red wine, then reduce this until nothing is left. Add the
shoulder back to the pan and pour over the stock.
• Cover and place this in the oven for 5 hours at 140°C until the meat is fully cooked
and falls apart easily. Take the meat out and pick though to remove all fat and sinew,
then roll this. Pass the liquor and use this to heat the shoulder back up and as a jus for
the dish.
• The baby pears once cooked and de-seeded, cut in half and caramelise them in a
hot pan with some sugar. Blanch the spring onion in salted water and colour in some
foaming butter. Simply blanch the spring cabbage leaf.
• For the pomme purée, heat the cream and butter in a pan and reduce it slightly. Add
the dry cooked potato. Mix this and season.
• For the pig skin in the restaurant, we cut this finely in strips and place in between two
trays in the oven for about 20 minutes at 180°C.
Tuddenham Mill
Tuddenham Mill’s Sous Chef,
Stuart Drake, talks to us about
seasonal produce and their
upcoming spring menus
Article by Samantha Nice
Head Chef, Lee Bye and his Sous Chef, Stuart Drake, really know
their stuff when it comes to sourcing the very best ingredients
throughout the year and it is their main starting point when they’re
conjuring up new dishes for the menu.
“We spend a lot of our time in the kitchen testing and trialling
different flavours to see what works well together. Our main point
of inspiration is to see what is in season and how we can create
something delicious using it,” Stuart explains. “Picking one seasonal
ingredient is a fantastic starting point and it usually snowballs from
there!” he continues. “We start with something as little as garlic
or asparagus and then add different
“I really like this
time of year as
flavours.”
flavours and textures. It doesn’t have
to be the main ingredient like meat
or fish as this is something we can
add later.”
Tuddenham Mill’s menu changes
every 2-3 weeks to reflect the
changing seasons as well as
accommodating to the change in
weather. “We don’t completely
change the whole menu. Some weeks
it is a matter of tweaking certain
dishes to bring a new dimension. We also consult our suppliers and
see if they have anything new to offer. Lee and I spend a lot of time
in the kitchen tasting and trying different things and working out
ways we can add a new spin to certain ingredients,” Stuart says.
So what is in season for March and April and what can we expect
from your spring menus?
March and April have lots to offer when it comes to seasonal
produce. “I really like this time of year as we can start to experiment
with some really fantastic flavours. March and April are great for
wild garlic, East Anglian oysters, rhubarb, lamb and asparagus just
to name a few,” he adds. “We source our lamb from Nedging farm
here in Suffolk as it is grass-fed. This makes a huge difference to
the flavour. We tend to roast in the pan and then finish it off over
the fire. This will be on our Sunday roast menu throughout March
and April and we’re looking forward to using it on our Easter Sunday
menu too. We actually pick wild garlic ourselves from Brandon
forest as it offers a delicate but strong flavour. It works really well in
our wild garlic and English pea soup.”
Asparagus is another favourite flavour in the Mill’s kitchen.
“Asparagus season only lasts around 3 weeks so we really try to
make the most of it. Tilbrook’s asparagus is by far the best and
it’s right on our doorstep. We phone in the morning and let them
know how much we need and they cut it fresh for us!” he tells us.
Tilbrook’s have been growing asparagus in Tuddenham since before
the war and they have a rather prestigious patch. So much so that
they are in demand across the country. “When asparagus comes,
spring really is here!” Stuart adds. Be sure to look out for this across
their menus throughout April!
Rhubarb is another favourite for Lee and Stuart. They use Yorkshire
forced rhubarb which is actually grown by candlelight. (Yes, we
were a little confused too!) “It’s grown in complete darkness and
harvested by candlelight which stops them turning green and being
too tough,” Stuart explains. “They’re famed for their striking red
colouring and flavour. They add a pop of colour to any dish and we
usually make a compote with it. It’s great for a dessert but we also
use it with duck which works perfectly together,” he adds.
If you love locally-sourced, seasonal produce which is cooked to
perfection, be sure to check out their changing menu online as we
head into the coming spring months!
lemon juice and half the zest. Add a spoonful of mixture to
each case, place a chunk of marzipan in the centre, then top
each evenly with the rest of the mixture. Bake in the oven
for 15–20 minutes, until risen and golden, then allow to cool
on a wire rack.
3. Sprinkle a little icing sugar on the work surface and roll
out the remaining marzipan. Using a small cookie cutter
(about 6cm) cut out 12 circles, saving the leftover marzipan.
Serves 12
Prep 20 mins
Cook 20 mins + cooling
4. To decorate the cupcakes, take off the paper cases. Brush
on a little apricot jam then place on the circles of marzipan.
Shape the leftover marzipan into 12 balls, then place one in
the centre of each cupcake, using some jam to help secure
if necessary. Place them on a baking tray and pop under a
hot grill for 1 minute until the marzipan is lightly browned.

Easter
Easter Feast
From hot cross donuts and other sweet treats,
to how to cook the perfect Easter Sunday
lunch, we speak to the people in the know
when it comes to delicious treats this Easter
Hot Cross Donuts are top of the menu at George’s Bakery for
Easter this year! They have all of the spice and fruit of a normal
hot cross bun but are deep fried instead of toasted and rolled
in spiced sugar and filled with apricot jam. A traditional Easter
favourite at George’s stall, they were one of his first creations
when he started markets in spring 2015. They will be available
from 25th March - 15th April with limited supply, so be sure to
be at the market early!
Other Easter bakes will include Ely Sloe Gin with cherry and
chocolate simnel cake, the gooey Crème Egg brownies and
seasonal quiches will include lamb, pea and mint quiche and
asparagus, pea, broad bean and ricotta quiche.
Hot Cross Donuts
More notable bakes to look for include cronuts in salted caramel,
chocolate hazelnut and other seasonal flavours, plus George’s
most popular cakes: the towering salted caramel layer cake,
maple syrup and bacon cake and the indulgent chocolate cookie
dough cake.
George’s stall will be at Ely and St.Ives Farmers Markets as well
as Cambridge market every Sunday.
Chocolat Chocolat
“We love Easter, and so do our customers” says Isabelle Chappell
Chocolatier and owner of Cambridge’s very own Chocolat
Chocolat, on St Andrews’s Street, Cambridge.
Although it’s a small shop inside you will find an enormous
range of chocolate to suit all tastes and budgets from pocket
money treats to hampers perfect for sharing. This Easter will be
no different and Isabelle is planning to offer one of the widest
ranges of Easter treats in Cambridgeshire.
“We will be making our own Easter eggs plaques again this year
because our customers loved them so much, some of them have
already popped in to the shop and ordered theirs already” said
Isabelle, explaining that the plaques are handmade from luxury
chocolate and can be customised with your favourite toppings or
can even have a hand written message piped in chocolate.
There will also be a wide range of Easter eggs all made with the
finest Belgian chocolate, starting from under a £1, there will be a
tasty Easter gift to suit all.
Isabelle is determined to look after every customer and for
the last few years she has stocked a range of Easter treats
suitable for those with dietary needs and unable to share normal
chocolate eggs. Chocolat Chocolat will be stocking a wide range
of specialist Easter treats: sugar free, dairy free, gluten free and
nut free perfect for those who need to avoid specific ingredients,
but still love the taste of luxury chocolate.
The shop will also be running chocolate courses over the Easter
weekend, when budding chocolatiers will be able to learn how to
make handmade truffles spending over two hours learning from
an expert just easy it is to make luxury chocolates at home.
At Chocolat Chocolat Easter comes in all shapes and sizes, but
one thing is sure: it will be full of chocolatey fun.
Easter Sunday Roast
Roast leg
of lamb
Serves 8
INGREDIENTS:
• 1lb of sausage meat
• 150g of chopped
chestnuts
• 1 table spoon of red
onion jam
• 1 teaspoon of whole
grain mustard
• 75g of dried cranberries
• 100g breadcrumbs
• 1 small onion
• 30g fresh sage
METHOD:
1
• Crush the garlic in a pestle and mortar.
Add a good pinch of the sea salt and ground
black pepper, the thyme springs and chopped
rosemary. Grind together in the pestle and
mortar to make a paste.
• Using the tip of a knife, spike the leg of lamb
about 15 times covering the surface area.
With the tip of a knife or piping bag with a
large nozzle ease the garlic paste into each cut
and message gently to encourage the paste to
penetrate the meat.
• Preheat the oven to 200°C /180°C (fan) /gas
mark 6.
• Mix together the olive oil and soy sauce with
Easter
Lamb/Beef – If it’s lamb you’re after, give our roast leg of
lamb recipe below a try. Otherwise when it comes to beef,
go for striploin and be sure to rub the exterior 12-24 hours in
advance with salt and chopped rosemary before roasting.
2
Roast Potatoes – You can play around with flavours but
ultimately there’s nowhere to hide if you haven’t followed
the golden rules. Choose a floury potato; parboil for 7-10
minutes; drain and let cool for 10 minutes; rough them up by
shaking in a colander; pre-heat your fat (we like beef dripping for
a beef roast or goose fat for other meats.)
3
Yorkshires – There are lots of myths about the Yorkshire
pudding but we’ve got it down to a simple equation: warm
batter rested at room temperature overnight + hot pan = the
perfect Yorkshire pudding. It also helps to choose a recipe
that uses a mixture of milk and water (instead of just milk) for
maximum rise and crispness.
4
Carrots – The humble carrot can be boiled, roasted,
or mashed but for something extra special and more
colourful, try using heritage carrots. Once boiled, finish them off
in a pan with a squeeze of orange juice, a knob of butter and a
sprig of thyme. Reduce whilst stirring until you have a gorgeous
buttery glaze.
5
St John’s Chop House
21-24 Northampton Street, Cambridge, CB3 0AD
Tel: 01223 353110, www.cambscuisine.com
Sanyi Kiliti, Executive Head Chef at St John’s Chop House
tells us how to take your Easter roast to the next level…
Gravy – It’s time consuming but a proper stock is a musthave
for making cracking gravy. Pick a day when you’re at
home all day and let it simmer away on the stove for five hours or
so. Later freeze in it batches or even in an ice cube tray for easy
use in Sunday gravies for weeks to come.
some salt and pepper.
• Rub the leg of lamb with the oil mixture. Leave
for 10 minutes to absorb the oily mix.
• Chop the carrot from top to bottom into thick
slices and slice the onions in half.
• Place the vegetables into a roasting tin and lay
the leg of lamb on top. Cover with foil and cook
in the oven for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes
cooking time remove the foil.
Roast for a further 50-60 minutes for medium
lamb, basting occasionally.
• Leave the leg of lamb to rest for 20-30
minutes, covered in foil to keep it warm.
• Enjoy!
LOOK OUT
Keep your eyes peeled for our line up of must-see films,
Article by Josh Tait
up-and-coming musicians and the next big thing...
DOCTOR STRANGE
Director: Scott Derrickson
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams
Release Date: 6th March
In the mould of Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant Man, Doctor
Strange is one of Marvel’s more off-beat characters to get the big
screen treatment. Benedict Cumberbatch plays arrogant surgeon
Stephen Strange, who reaches a crossroads in his life after seriously
injuring his prized hands, leaving his career in tatters. An education
in the mystic arts follows, and with it some mind bending Inception
style visuals that are far more innovative than anything previously
glimpsed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
WONDER WOMEN
Directors: Patty Jenkins
Stars: Gal Gadot, Robin Wright, Chris Pine
Release Date: June 2017
Just in time for Summer Blockbuster season comes the latest
attempt to kickstart DC’s Cinematic Universe. It’s fair to say that
their joint efforts with Warner Bros. to compete with Marvel’s
cinematic success have not been a resounding success so far,
and their endeavors reached rock bottom with last year’s poorly
received Batman Vs Superman. Gal Gadot made her debut as the
immortal Amazon warrior (princess) in that film, but far from being
tainted by association, hopes are high for a character whose comic
book counterpart has been revitalized in recent years. Wonder
Woman director Patty Jenkins is a relative newcomer to the world
of big budget blockbusters, but her work on the US crime drama
‘The Killing’ suggests a darker take on a character that is often not
taken seriously enough.
CD: Grandaddy
LAST PLACE
After a six year
absence, Grandaddy’s
return has been a
gradual one - a gig here
and a festival headline
slot there - culminating
in this year’s first album
since 2006’s Just Like
the Fambly Cat. The
enigmatic five piece
have always positioned
themselves slightly left
of the mainstream,
which thankfully means
that their wistful,
distinctive blend of
anthemic, experimental
rock has always had a
timeless quality that has
set them apart from
their more conventional
peers. New tracks
Way We Wont and
Evermore are not a
departure from their
signature sound, but
their idiosyncracies
– Way We Wont’s
wobbly synth riff, or
frontman Jason Lyttle’s
understated vocals –
make sure that there
will always be a place
for Grandaddy.
Giulio welcome Kenzo for women
“French luxury fashion house, Kenzo was the concept of
fashion student, Kenzo Takada. The Japanese designer
travelled to Paris in the early sixties to inspire the world of
fashion with his take on luxury clothing.
His foray into women’s fashion saw him take inspiration
from his Asian heritage and the prominent European
fashion houses and created his first boutique ‘Jungle Jap’ in
Paris during the seventies.
Kenzo grew into one of the most sought after brands in
fashion going on to produce men’s fashion, perfumes, and at
the turn of the century, housewares. After retiring, Takada
passed the torch and the brand currently has Humberto
Leon and Carol Lim as creative directors. The American duo’s
leadership has seen the brand stride into its place as a luxury
contemporary brand and a must have in your wardrobe.
In store at King Street and online (www.giuliofashion.com)
Yes I know... we’ve not even had a chance to don our spring/summer garments yet but the
runways have already determined what we should be adhering to this autumn/winter.
When it comes to colour it appears anything goes. From rich
earthy colour palettes to bright colour blocks. Fuchsia pink will
carry us right through to next year as seen by the likes of Versus
Versace and others. Christopher Kane opted for a much more
muted pink palette as did Anya Hindmarch. Antonio Berdardi
went for a heavily navy infused look, whilst David Koma favoured
khaki. It appears mustard yellow is set to be the colour of the
season thanks to the likes of Calvin Klein. Other colour palettes
include rich blues and purples and oxblood red.
For inspiration when it comes to prints and patterns, think vintage
wallpapers, wild flowers, embroidery, patchwork and other clashing
favourites. Things we didn’t think went together now do thanks
to mismatching at JW Anderson and Mary Katrantzou. Florals
are sticking around for yet another season but in vast variation.
Christopher Kane brought pale pink brocade florals whilst Preen
by Thornton Bregazzi mixed electrified florals and vintage prints.
As expected we will see a slight adaptation of this year’s SS17
trends as we move into the colder months. Ruffles won’t be going
anywhere and neither will velvet. Both dominated the runways of
Erdem, Antonio Berdardi and others.
Asymmetry will also stay prominent as we look towards uneven
hemlines and skewed skirts and dresses from David Koma,
Christopher Kane and others. Pleats and flute sleeves will also
continue to dominate, as will drop hems. A heavy emphasis
on shoulder detailing is still a must, as we see an abundance of
puffiness at Temperley London. We loved their adorable bib
necklines and tie collars. Talking of adorable, we loved Molly
Goddard’s pretty dresses and renowned knits. We also saw the
return of the classic Noughties leggings and ballet pumps combo.
Talking of comebacks, remember wearing hotpant shorts over
your tights? Yes, Alexander Wang has
rekindled this romance. We also saw Ryan
Lo collaborate with Hello Kitty to give
a playful new print to their drop-waist
dresses.
When it comes to outerwear, it’s all about
making an entrance. Opt for the oversized,
patterned piece and let that do the talking.
Patterned coats were seen across the
board from Paul Costelloe and Peter
Pilotto. From loud jacquard prints at Mary
Katrantzou to more muted pastel florals,
they are a must for everyone’s winter
wardrobe. If you’re not fancying the garish
prints, go oversized and pick those with a
fur collar trim. Capes and wraps will remain
so be sure to keep them at the front of
your wardrobe. Roksanda showcased
oversized shearling coats in abundance and
Preen by Thornton Bregazzi also favoured
the boyish fitting quilted shrugs.
Oscar de la Renta brought a new twist to
jazzing up our favourite LBD as it’s now
all about the embellished footwear. Ditch
your statement necklaces and draped
earrings as it’s time to let your feet do the
talking.
Much-loved British label Mulberry brought
yet another stunning show which was
full of wallpaper prints, pleated dresses,
checked suits, floral capes, cord skirts,
fairisle knits and embroidery. Bag-wise,
it was all about their cross-body ‘hat box’
style bags.
Topshop Unique offered yet another
uplifting show of colour. They returned
back to their British roots with their new
campaign girl Lily Jean Harvey. Lily has
taken over from our American Instagram
crush, Taylor Hill. The show was jampacked
with slogan tees, stripes and
tracksuits.
STEP INSIDE
We catch up with Laura
Gahan, beauty therapist
at Bury St Edmunds’
SK Clinic + Spa to hear
about their extensive
range of treatments and
her go-to products and
favourite brands
Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT
SK CLINIC + SPA AND WHAT TREATMENTS
ARE YOU TRAINED IN?
A: I joined SK Clinic + Spa in June 2016
after moving from Ireland. I studied for
three years in the South of Ireland which
enables me to carry out a wide variety
of treatments including waxing, facials,
massage and reflexology. Over the seven
and half years I have been in the industry, I
have gained a great insight into the beauty
world from working in salons and spas in
both Ireland and New York and from my
ongoing training. I have recently been
trained in IPL which I am really excited
about starting in March.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TREATMENT TO
DO FOR YOUR CLIENTS?
A: I enjoy doing all treatments, but if I had to
pick a favourite it would have to be facials.
Pevonia facials are very relaxing treatments
and achieve amazing results. This is
something I have always loved about the
brand. I have seen clients leave astonished
with their instant results and most return
for follow up treatments.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR MOST POPULAR
TREATMENT?
A: At SK Clinic + Spa we do a lot of
maintenance treatments like waxing. One
of our most popular being intimate waxing
such as Hollywood and Brazilian. We are
also very lucky to be one of the only spas/
salons in the area to offer male intimate
waxing which has become increasing
popular over the last few years.
Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW TREATMENTS?
A: Pevonia strive to constantly keep up to
date with their treatments, products and
packaging and this means clients are getting
the best treatments and products. This also
keeps it very interesting for us as therapists.
The most recent treatments to the list are
LipRenew Plump & De-Age Treatment,
and the Wellness Fusion. LipRenew Plump
& De-Age treatment has an instant effect
increasing lip volume, visibly smoothing the
lip contour and reducing lines and wrinkles
with the client achieving fuller, sexier lips.
The Wellness Fusion treatment is the
ultimate head to toe relaxing treatment and
includes a full-body polish and 30-minute
massage. It’s the perfect treatment for this
time of the year to relax and unwind. The
body polish rejuvenates the skin and the
massage helps to unwind and de-stress.
Q: WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ONE DESSERT
ISLAND PRODUCT AND WHY?
A: This is a very tricky question but I
would have to pick the Soothing Propolis
Concentrate. It is the one product I
always go back to as I suffer with hormonal
breakouts around my chin. It’s made by
bees and is desensitising, decongesting, an
antiseptic and antibacterial. It also works
great on minor burns.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MAKE UP
BRAND AND WHY?
A: My favourite make up brand is
bareMinerals. It’s fantastic as it’s based on
only natural ingredients found in the earth.
When working in a spa it can be quite warm
at times, and I find the bareMinerals make
up lets my skin breathe as it is very calming
and non-irritating on the skin which ensures
I don’t get breakouts. I also find it lasts all
day and coverage can be built up to suit
your needs. It has a wide range of colours
and I particularly like their lip gloss. My
favourite lip gloss colour at the moment is
most definitely Party Starter.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SKIN CARE
BRAND AND WHY?
A: Pevonia, I have worked with the brand in
a previous Spa and was very excited to be
working with it again at SK. I love Pevonia’s
products to work with and for my own skin.
All of pevonias natural products are
designed to meet the needs of specific skin
types and conditions.
Q: WHAT WOULD BE YOUR BEST SKINCARE
ADVICE?
A: My number one skincare advice for
everyone would be to wear a Sun Protection
Factor (SPF). By simply applying an SPF,
you are protecting your skin from harmful
rays from our depleting ozone layer, skin
cancer, brown age spots and preventing the
development of wrinkled, premature
ageing skin.
There are two types of SPF - one chemical
and the other mechanical. Pevonia opts for
the mechanical product as it is far more
effective in its ability to protect the skin
and does not cause sensitivity as a chemical
SPF could.
Debugging The CrossFit
Myths
CrossFit is a training methodology
that incorporates a variety of
weightlifting, gymnastics, bodyweight
movements and cardiovascular
exercise in a challenging and fun
approach to fitness.
We focus on what our bodies are able
to do, and the changes in our body
and mind set are a by-product of this
hard work. We are more than just a
gym; we are a community of likeminded
individuals and families that
all enjoy living a healthy and active
lifestyle.
When we are contacted by
prospective clients, the questions
they have are often the same. We
thought it was about time we put
some of the myths straight
Fitness
Paul & Ellie, owners at Eye’s T800 CrossFit box debug some of
the myths surrounding the fitness programme
“DO I HAVE TO BE REALLY FIT TO
START? I DON’T WANT TO HOLD
EVERYONE UP.”
This is by far the biggest concern and
the short answer is no. Every workout
is appropriately scaled to suit every
level of fitness, mobility and strength
for each individual. All sessions
are carefully planned to allow all
participants to perform to the
best of their ability. Our members
range from 16 to late 60s, and all
participate in the same class.
“IF I LIFT WEIGHTS WILL I GET BULKY?”
Although lifting weights is included
in the sessions it is only part of
what we do. We do not focus on
body building; we focus on building
strength and learning the skills of
olympic weightlifting. Doing CrossFit
regularly will give you a more athletic
and toned physique.
“I’VE HEARD IT IS QUITE INTENSE, WILL
I GET INJURED?”
You will be taught how to move well
and lift weights properly, focusing on
form over load, the latter will come in
time. All of our classes are instructed
by professional and experienced
coaches that are focused on
technique and the way you move.
You only add weight to a movement
if you are performing it really well
and if you are happy to do so. This is
something your regular gym would
not offer.
“WHY IS THE MONTHLY
MEMBERSHIP MORE EXPENSIVE THAN
MY LOCAL GYM?”
You have to look at what you are
getting for your money. Every class
is like attending a group personal
training session where you are
watched, coached, encouraged. If
you break down the cost per session
that you attend it is incredibly good
value for money.
If you are bored of your current exercise
routine, and fancy a change, give CrossFit
a go. Head over to www.crossfit.com and
search on their affiliate map to find your
nearest box. You won’t regret it!
patients. We popped into their
Cambridge-based Progress clinic to test out
their new AlterG anti-gravity treadmills and
find out a little more from Lauren Bradshaw,
their specialist physiotherapist.
WHAT IS THE ALTERG ANTI-GRAVITY
TREADMILL AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
It’s designed specifically for aiding physical
rehabilitation and removes the usual strain
caused by the body’s own weight on the
lower limbs. It is able to select between 20%
and 100% of your body weight whilst you are
running. It’s precise unweighting technology
allows users to push their training and
rehabilitation further than ever before. These
Spire Sprints Ahead
Hear about Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital’s
innovative AlterG
anti-gravity treadmills
treadmills are able to strengthen users in a
way that couldn’t be achieved on the road, in
the gym or even in water.
WHO ARE THEY AIMED AT AND WHY MIGHT
PATIENTS USE THEM?
These treadmills are aimed at all levels
of fitness - from top-level athletes and
orthopaedic and neurological patients to
seniors and even those who are looking to
lose weight.
For rehabilitation patients with lower limb
injuries the AlterG treadmills are great.
They’re also really beneficial to neurological
patients who have conditions which mean
they require extra assistance with mobility
and strength. Not only this, they’re ideal
for runners who are looking to boost their
cardiovascular fitness without the impact
that running unfortunately has on our joints.
By reducing pressure on the body and joints,
it enables rehabilitation users to quicker
return to sport following an injury.
HOW DOES A SESSION ON AN ALTERG ANTI-
GRAVITY TREADMILL WORK?
Each session allows you to exercise at a
chosen percentage of your bodyweight. The
anti-gravity condition is reached by filling
the treadmill’s pressure-controlled chamber
with air which lifts the user up and reduces
any weight-bearing pain. Sessions may
be booked as part of your physiotherapy
appointment or as a stand-alone session.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE?
As a regular road runner I wasn’t quite sure
what to expect, but after being zipped in and
letting the machine gauge my bodyweight,
Lauren was able to adjust the treadmill
allowing me to run at different percentages
of my bodyweight. When it was dropped
to just 20% it felt as though I was running
in space and had virtually no impact at all.
My muscles were still running at 12km per
hour but without the usual pounding on my
knees and other joints. I can certainly see
the benefit for those with injuries who are
looking to regain mobility.
Health
Journey
Into Yoga
Charlie Wall, of Cambridge Bootcamps,
tells us about her new love for yoga
Cambridge Bootcamps
Tel: 07545 284928
www.cambridgebootcamps.co.uk
Rewind 6 months and I was working full-time running my
Cambridge Bootcamp sessions; doing 1-2-1 personal training;
1-2-1 coaching sessions and running online mindset groups. Whilst
doing this, I was also training myself, using kettlebells, strength
training and doing HIIT sprint training. I was basically going
at 100mph almost everyday. Following some sad news in my
personal life at the end of last year, my training took a backseat.
I didn’t have time to work, or see my clients or train myself.
Since my father’s death in October
“I had no idea
when I started
the yoga
challenge just
how much I
would enjoy it.”
2016, I started to raise money
for Headway Cambridgeshire in
his memory. I decided I needed
something to aim for so signed up
to do the Cambridge Half Marathon
this month. I am not a huge fan of
long distance running but along with
some supportive friends, I was on
target to run it in a good time. I felt
proud that the money being raised
was going to a worthy cause and that I was back training. I was
really enjoying the positive impact on my mental health too.
All was well until I was rushed to hospital with extreme back pain.
The doctors discovered that my small intestine had twisted and I
needed an emergency operation to try to save the bowel. To cut
a very long story short, when I saw the doctor post-op he told me
that luckily they had saved my small intestine, but that they had
found the ovaries ‘stuck’ to some pelvic scar tissue, and I had a fair
amount of ‘rusty looking fluid’. I had three holes in my stomach
and was told not to train. The doctor told me it wasn’t stress or
running, I was simply unlucky. My world had officially crashed.
After being house bound for the best part of two weeks, I
happened to stumble across a 31-day yoga challenge on YouTube.
I promised myself at least 10 minutes a day just basic stretching to
get me moving again. I knew I was sinking in my mood and needed
to take control. As a PT I knew what I should and shouldn’t be
doing, so I adapted routines to suit. What I hadn’t considered was
just how much it would improve my mental wellbeing and sense of
control.
I had no idea when I started the yoga challenge just how much I
would enjoy it, how much I needed the space, time and element
of self-care, or how many mental benefits it would give me.
Yoga has helped me to open up. It’s helped me breathe, meditate,
focus and be patient. It’s helped me to be kind to myself and
given me time to think. I’ve learnt about mindfulness, meditation
and about taking care of myself. I’ve learnt to practise gratitude,
compassion and most importantly, I’ve learnt that I will not give
up. “Turn your face toward the sun and the shadows will fall behind
you.” - Maori Proverb.
I am now doing yoga daily at home and I try to go to one class
per week if I can. I hope to start running again soon, but I feel my
body was telling me to slow down. I am going to embrace that for
now and just see where it takes me.
BIFOLD VS SLIDING...
...Kloeber tell us which are best when it comes to fitting doors in your home
The trend for opening up your
home to the outside and making a
seamless flow from the living area
to the garden is one that is here
to stay. Innovations in the style
of doors available over the last 10
years have made this possible with
high performance bifold and sliding
doors becoming the norm.
One of the most frequently asked
questions by Kloeber’s potential
customers is - “Should I choose bifold or
sliding doors? Which is better?”
The short answer to that question is that
both are equally desirable in a property,
but the choice is entirely personal
according to Kloeber.
“We try to advise the ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ of
each choice to ensure that everyone has
explored all the available options. Our
bifolding and sliding doors come in a range
of materials and colours and really add the
wow factor to your property. We bespoke
make all our doors to order using the best
quality profiles, ironmongery and glass,”
Matt Higgs, Sales Director and co-owner
of Kloeber tells us.
Kloeber’s bifold doors come in a choice of
thermally broken aluminium or three types
of engineered timber – pine, meranti or
oak. Their sliding doors come in a choice
of aluminium or composite (aluminium
outside and timber inside).
To enable yourself to make the right
choice it’s important to consider how
you’re going to use the room as well as the
external space beyond the doors.
HERE ARE SOME THINGS KLOEBER THINK YOU SHOULD
BE CONSIDERING:
1
Is there another exit door near the bifolds/sliders or
will this be a main point of entry and exit to the garden?
A bifold with one master door leaf that can be used
independently may be more suitable for a frequently used door.
2
How wide is the aperture?
If it’s smaller you may want to be able to open up the
whole space with bifolds. Bifold doors offer a 90%
opening when folded back. If you have a larger opening, say 5
metres or more, you may only need to open up part of the space
therefore a slider may be more suitable. If the doors are going
to be shut most of the time do you need the functionality of
a folding door? Would you rather have the bigger expanses of
glass that a sliding door could provide giving you an unbroken
view of your environment?
3
Always consider your floor finishes. A level threshold
with similar flooring inside and outside really creates
a cohesive single space, especially when you open
the whole space up with a bifold. Creating that seamless look
between the inside and outside can transform your home and
how you use it.
“The bifold vs slider question is a frequent one for us but we’re
pretty good at delving further and asking the right questions to
get our customers thinking about what’s right for their needs.
Of course there is no right or wrong answer here, just what
suits your taste, the way and frequency in which you will use the
doors and what’s right for the style and layout of the property,”
Matt continues.
The best way to make an informed choice is to view the doors
first hand and to see how they operate and look. It’s important
to explore all of your options when making such a large purchase
so it’s worth taking a look at Kloeber’s extensive showroom in
Huntingdon.
Don’t forget, there is a full range of complementary products in
addition to bifold and sliding doors including French and single
doors, windows, fixed glazing, roof lights and contemporary
and traditional entrance doors on display. Kloeber are a onestop
shop for the self-builder and home improver and their
experienced team are very happy to talk through all the options
with you.
Koti & Co’s tips on how
to create a cosy Nordic
interior style
A refined, colour palette is key.
Stick to greys, white and beiges
as your base colours. Add some
accessories in muted colours, and
use only one or two bolder colours
as highlights. Try dark forest green
or a stormy blue for example.
Introducing Koti & Co
Meet Kat
and Nic, the
founders of Koti
& Co. They love
bringing high quality,
lesser known homewares
to your attention. They never sell anything
they wouldn’t absolutely love to have in
their own homes back in cosy St Neots,
Cambridgeshire.
They are also trained product designers,
who graduated from university and set
up their design consultancy in 2014.
Since then, they have worked with very
prestigious brands designing homewares,
kitchen gadgets and laundry products.
Kat and Nic decided to add an extra
branch to their business this year with
an online shop selling their homewares,
wall art, stationery and jewellery. The
collections are curated (and vetted)
by themselves focusing on style and
functionality. You can feel confident
knowing that the products you buy are
of impeccable quality and therefore
longevity. Koti & Co’s collections are
edited and refined in ways other lifestyle
stores aren’t. It is apparent that the
founders have an excellent relationship
with their suppliers. Each brand has an
individual design story, and an attention to
detail on their products that Kat and Nic
have an eye for spotting. Kat and Nic don’t
really speak in ‘designer language’ as it’s
not really what they’re about. This is why
on each product page there is a personal
review from one of them which includes
really useful information, so that you can
understand how a product feels, or how big
it looks for example.
Koti is actually a Finnish word, meaning
home. Kat and Nic enjoy Scandinavian
design and so aimed to create the perfect
mix of contemporary design whilst adding
an accessible everyday comfort element
to the overall aesthetic. As a result, their
products can be placed in a multitude of
interior styles whilst effortlessly and subtly
exuding quality and style.
Mix up your materials! Incorporate
natural materials into your
scheme; hardwoods, brass, glass,
silicone and stone all have an
honesty to them, and provide a
medley of textual elements.
Focus interest. Rather than using
overbearing wallpaper, which
can sometimes be a little too
permanent, use your accessories
to focus your interior style.
Everyday luxury. Invest in the
products you use everyday, a well
designed product is more fulfilling
to use and own.
Form follows function.
Don’t substitute a product’s
functionality just because it looks
good! There are products out
there that do both.
Feel at home. Add in plenty of
home comforts - a soft rug or fur
throw, and a small lamp or some
candles to softly light the room.
New homes in Suffolk
combining modern,
rural living within close
proximity of popular towns
and cities
Rachel Goodman of Fleur Developments talks to Adrian Peel
about Lady Fishers Field in Risby, an elegant collection of just 14
three, four and five-bedroom homes built by Fleur Developments
and on the market with Jackson-Stops & Staff.
Located close to Risby’s Norman church and pretty green, this
striking new development is set in the heart of the picturesque
Suffolk village - a village which enjoys easy access to a wide range
of shops and activities and is also well-served by schools.
Traditional in design, the 14 houses gently reflect the rural nature
of the parish, while contemporary interiors are packed with modern
and stylish ideas. Only five miles from Bury St Edmunds and a
30-minute drive from Cambridge, each house in the scheme is
beautiful in its own way and set back behind a paved driveway.
The homes are generously
“Location is
of paramount
importance
when selecting
a new site and
Risby certainly
met our criteria.”
proportioned and include a large
single or double garage. Exquisitely
crafted throughout, they are
built to maximise light and space,
encompassing traditional styles and
local materials. All this is designed to
enrich this quintessential corner of
Suffolk.
Rachel Goodman, Marketing
Manager at Norfolk-based Fleur
Developments, spoke to Velvet
about this exciting new project, something of a first for the
company. “We do most of our developments in North Norfolk,”
she explained. “This is our first foray into Suffolk and so this is a
landmark site for us.”
“Location is of paramount importance when selecting a new
site and Risby certainly met our criteria, offering a rural idyll
within close proximity to Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge.”
Rachel continued:
“As for the homes
themselves, Fleur’s
strapline is ‘Lovingly
Made Luxury’ and we
make every effort to
live up to that. Our
homes are designed
to complement
and enrich their
surroundings and we
spend huge amounts
of time on the details.
“We include traditional
styles and local materials and the Lady Fishers Field homes are
a lovely mix of brick, render, weatherboard and generous barge
boards and deep timber fascias. We also specified that the roofs
must be steeply pitched and used clay pantiles (we never use
concrete) to ensure the homes echoed the period homes in the
surrounding area.
“For the setting itself, we make every effort to landscape the
development so it captures the village feel, with abundant green
spaces, specimen trees and lots of spring bulbs.” Commenting
on the interiors, Rachel said: “Inside, our homes are well-crafted
throughout, but what really sets us apart from other regional
developers is the way we choose to maximise space and light.
“Risby homes are full of light, with bi-fold or French doors always
part of the spec – plus we love the luxury of space. We incorporate
82
Property
Article by Adrian Peel
wide hallways and landings, spacious openplan
kitchen/dining areas and a snug/study
for that extra reception room.”
Rachel added: “While some of our threebedroom
homes would be made into four
by other developers, we choose to include
the luxury of both a walk-in dressing room
and an en suite in the master bedroom. In
the kitchen/dining room, we always include
a sizeable island in the kitchen area, as we
consider this the hub of the household and
so try to imagine how best to make family
life work and make provision for that.”
What else makes a Fleur home unique?
“I think it is the attention to detail with
the design of the homes,” replied Rachel.
“Juliet, our Design Director, is very handson
when it comes to deciding what she
thinks is suitable. She takes great pains to
make sure that everything exudes quality
and is in keeping with the area.”
“They’re lovely spaces to be in,” said Rachel,
“and not a thing slips through without being
really considered. They’re as good a quality
as we can make them.”
The Risby homes will be completed
from June 17 and will be rolling out until
February, 2018. Although the show home
was only launched two weeks ago, four of
the 14 available homes are already under
offer. Asked whether there will be more
Fleur developments to come in Suffolk,
Rachel concluded: “While Risby is our first
development in Suffolk, we are definitely
looking at other sites in the area and hope
to do many more in the years to come.”
Landscaping
The Other
Branch of
The Business
We catch up with Simon Luckings, Operations Manager at S P Landscapes
to hear more about the commercial side of their business and their recent projects
S P Landscapes & Tree Contractors was founded back in 1998
by their existing Managing Director, Steve Pammenter. Nearly
20 years on, there are over 30 full time members of staff in their
Red Lodge based depot which operates across 3 main divisions;
tree services, grounds maintenance services and highway
services. Whilst the team at S P Landscapes work heavily on
domestic projects, the commercial sector also brings in a lot of
work. “As well as undertaking tree works and landscaping works
to private domestic properties, which is a large proportion of our
business, we also undertake a lot of work for District and County
Councils and the Highways,” Simon tells us. “These jobs tend
to be larger vegetation clearance jobs as opposed to working
on a single tree in someone’s garden,” he continues. “Our work
for Councils include managing their tree stock to ensure that
they do not pose a hazard to the public. This work will include
the removal of dead branches, lifting of low branches that may
impede pathways or roadways, and the removal of dead, diseased
or unsafe trees,” Simon adds. “Our work for the Highways
includes the removal of hazardous trees that pose a threat to
road users, cutting back of vegetation to ensure signs are visible
and large scale vegetation clearance for new junctions or road
widening projects.” And it doesn’t stop there! In addition to tree
cutting and removals, S P Landscapes also undertake a lot of
tree planting. This involves anything from replacing a single tree
to much larger scale planting of plots on the side of the highway.
“We have recently completed a tree planting job on the M11
Northbound carriageway near Fiddlers Hamlet in Epping, which
was required to provide screening of the motorway from nearby
houses,” Simon adds. Other recent planting projects include
Interiors
Article by Max Spenser-Morris,
award-winning designer at Design
Republic in Bury St Edmunds
Design Inspiration Can
Come From The Smallest Detail
The two rooms of the home that are the most personal are the
kitchen and the bathroom. Injecting a sense of character and
personality into these spaces is therefore important, in order to
create a sense of homeliness and to make them truly your own.
Very often seen as the hub of the home, the kitchen is where
family life takes centre stage and where entertaining friends
begins, whilst the bathroom is a private space of sanctuary
and relaxation. Both rooms from a design point of view lend
themselves to experimentation and breaking from the norm in
order to create something unique.
When planning a new kitchen or bathroom it is vital to consider
how you envisage the space will be used, what are the most
important elements and what works in the existing space and what
doesn’t? In the kitchen, practical elements such as layout and
storage need to be decided at an early stage in the design process,
in order to ensure the room works aesthetically too. Similarly, in
the bathroom, it is important to think about who will be using the
space and how frequently – is it the main family bathroom or a
master en-suite or guest bathroom used on the odd occasion?
Once these practicalities have been established, I really like to
explore shapes, textures and colours in order to create your
dream kitchen and bathroom within the boundaries set by you.
This design outlook is something we actively encourage at Design
Republic. It might be that we take the design inspiration for your
space from a favourite piece of artwork or artefact, or it could be
a piece of fabric or a favourite colour accent. Or it could simply
just come from a conversation about how your family lives and
operates. After all, if children are doing homework in the kitchen
then this needs to be accommodated and if you love to entertain
the last thing you want is for your sparkling conversation to be
drowned out by the drone of an extractor hood or to have to
reach too far for the next bottle of wine!
Of course, a new kitchen or bathroom is a big investment and
the design of the space needs to be tangible. Just as buying a
new car requires a test drive in order to get a feel of how it drives,
deciding on a new bathroom or kitchen is a similar process where
visiting a showroom enables you to see the products ‘in the flesh’.
As experienced designers this is something we feel very strongly
about, which is why new customers are always assured of a warm
welcome at Design Republic.
INSPIRATION
IN ACTION
After Jon and Clare moved into their
new home in Cambridge, they wanted
to maximise the space available without
extending. They brought in Max from
Design Republic to help.
The home was a new build c.2000 and
was a typical new-build with old Trade-Hut
kitchen and utility room. The layout left
no room for a breakfast table or enough
tall units. There was also a separate dining
room which Jon and Clare felt was not
something they would use very often.
Max began by opening the whole space
to bring the dining area into the kitchen
space. Max says: “The dining room suited
the open-plan layout and would be used
every day. With a couple of steel supports,
this would be very easy to achieve.”
After
The clients wanted the new kitchen to
retain a slightly country feel but not at a
premium cost, so Max used painted shaker
lay-on doors and end panels. The worktops
were a Polar White Quartz. The white
tones were offset by the warmth of the
oak flooring. For what would be created,
Jon and Clare were happy to lose the
separate utility room as long as they had
space to hide the washing machine and
tumble dryer. Max created some tall units
where the utility room was and stacked
them behind matching furniture which also
included larder storage.
The medium height units work really well
within the design. It offers a great ‘cooking
centre’ with multifunction oven, compact
oven with microwave, integrated coffee
machine and pull-out larder.
“We are over the moon with the design.
The layout works so much better for us
on a daily basis and we never thought we
would be able to get so much into this
space when we bought it. Looking back,
getting Max in to help was the best thing
to do rather than trying to do it ourselves.”
IN A NUTSHELL
The new Honda Civic has been completely
re-designed and re-engineered in a
quest for technical excellence. The
final result is a car which has a unique
personality and sporty soul as well as being
exciting to drive, refined, comfortable
and sophisticated. Made in Swindon, it’s
British-built and is already proving to be a
popular choice with pre-orders performing
strongly.
DRIVE & PERFORMANCE
It offers an engaging driving experience
with ergonomic yet sporty driving position
and a new dual pinion steering system
which gives greater feedback and control.
In order to have the power and economy
to match its looks, Honda have developed
two innovative turbocharged petrol
engines. Both the 182ps 1.5 i-VTEC and
129ps 1.0 i-VTEC come with the choice
of a 6-speed manual or CVT automatic
and feature Honda’s unique Earth Dreams
Technology which offers the perfect
balance of performance and efficiency.
parking brake, the Civic's got it covered.
The CONNECT infotainment system
helps keep you in touch with one central
touch-screen display which seamlessly
integrates with your smartphone allowing
you to get directions, play music, make
calls and send and receive messages.
SAFETY FIRST
With a whole host of safety technologies,
the Civic has in-built Honda SENSING
which includes features such as intelligent
adaptive cruise control, traffic sign
recognition and lane keeping assist. Along
with their agile handling assist system, this
provides more predictable road behaviour
and superior ride comfort.
AT A GLANCE
• Top speed 136 mph
• 0-62 mph 8.2 seconds
• Official fuel economy 48.7 mpg
space, the interior is quite something. Its
supportive and contoured seats mean
you’re surrounded by comfort and quality
making every journey a comfortable one.
The interior technology is also something
to note. From its new clever 7” Honda
The Volvo
V90
Written by Phil Huff
Volvo claims that its cars are made by Sweden, not in Sweden.
It’s a subtle difference, but one that the company is proud of,
meaning that its luxuriously appointed behemoths can cope with
anything the British climate might throw at it without breaking a
sweat.
I wanted to put that to the test, but if I’m going to test things
thoroughly I might as well aim for ‘extreme’ and see what happens.
Which is how I found myself in the middle of a lake in two tonnes
of Sweden’s finest metalwork.
Fortunately the lake, situated just a few kilometres from the
remote ski resort of Åre, was frozen. Or at least that’s what the
Volvo guys promised me, but given the creaks, cracks and moans
coming from the icy surface, I was less than convinced. The
temperatures had been unusually warm before my arrival, too,
although it was a reassuringly cold -12C by the time I’d found my
way to the Copperhill Mountain Lodge for the night.
The drive there showed off the talents of the V90 Cross Country
nicely. Raised by 65mm over the standard V90 estate, its softer
suspension makes the ride even better than usual.
Yes, there’s a little more bodyroll in corners, but it’s by no means
intrusive and doesn’t affect how much confidence you can place
in the car. That said, I was on special studded tyres that, on the
clear stretches of tarmac, actually hindered roadholding slightly
while making a lot more noise. Once I’d turned off the main roads
and was on the way to Åre, the roads turned to sheet ice, where
the studs came into their own.
I confidently navigated my way using the Sensus infotainment
system that’s built into this and the bigger XC90 SUV. It’s a
masterpiece of design: everything you need is displayed on a
HUD in front of you, while less important information is placed on
the large touchscreen in the centre console. Seldom used options
are hidden just a swipe of the finger away, leaving it safe to use on
the road.
The same goes for the rest of the interior. It’s as good as it
gets, oozing minimalist Swedish style while being easy to use,
spacious, comfortable and quiet. How the engineers have
achieved this is a mystery, but they’re absolutely nailing it in
Gothenburg right now.
96
Velvet Magazine | March 2017

Motoring
The car itself feels nailed to the ground,
thanks to an all-wheel drive system that
splits power intelligently between the four
wheels. Under normal circumstances, all
the power goes to the front wheels, but
once things get sketchy, it sends some
to the rear wheels to balance things up.
Unlike most systems, it’s also engineered
to remain neutrally balanced
when on the limit of adhesion, which
makes it a more predictable car to handle
under extreme conditions.
Ah yes, those extreme conditions.
Creeping onto a frozen lake is an
unnerving experience, but once I’d been
given a thorough safety briefing (“don’t
hit any other cars!”) and gone through
an exhaustive training session (“there are
some cones, go round them”), I was let
loose on the 50cm thick ice sheet.
For the purposes of genuine consumer
journalism, I left the computer aids
switched on, which means there’s traction
control, stability control, automatic allwheel
drive and emergency autonomous
braking. The surprising result is that it
was possible to drive reasonably sensibly
around the lake, the car stepping and
braking individual wheels once it had
decided that things were getting too
enthusiastic. Point proven – the car is
inherently safe.
Switch everything off and it’s a different
beast, the tail end of the car swinging
to angles even beyond 90 degrees, yet
remaining controllable, which is impressive
considering the 5m long pendulum it
becomes. Yes, to get the most out of it you
need to know what’s going on with weight
transfer, steering angles, grip coefficients
and such like, but any loon could go
out and have a huge amount of fun at
Sweden’s natural test track.
It might not quite represent a slippy road
in the suburbs of Cambridge, but it’s
reassuring to know that the car will look
after you every bit as well there as it would
in Åre.
Motoring
The VW Golf has, since its launch in 1974, offered
a range of practical and sporting variants. Originally
intended to take over from the VW Beetle, the Golf
offered a thoroughly modern take on being a car for all.
So much so that by 2012, VW had built over 29 million
Golfs. Figures like that speak volumes but in addition, the
Golf has also won many awards over the years including
European car of the year, not once but twice!
In 1976 VW launched the Mark 1 Golf GTi, a car which
has come to define the term ‘hot hatch’ fast, refined
and above all, fun to drive. The GTi recipe was a game
changer in the motoring industry and is still at the
forefront of performance and affordable cars for many
drivers.
The original GTi set a new standard for road holding,
reliability and all-round drivability, few cars in its class
could compete.
So why reflect on the long unbroken history of the VW
Golf? If you are looking to buy a used car and you are
tempted by a Golf, it is reassuring to know that what lies
behind your car is 40 years of constant development by
German engineers who started with an excellent product
in the first place. They are a well sorted design. History
may count for something, the Golf is a car which has a
sound pedigree, it comes in many forms, three doors,
five doors, convertibles, sports GTisoffering safe and
reliable motoring to suit most budgets.
At Newmarket Motor Company we have sold hundreds
of Golfs over many years and we continue to supply
them as they never seem to lose their essential appeal.
Perhaps one of the enduring aspects of the Golf is
that it appeals to men and women and to young and
mature drivers alike. The appeal of the Golf concept has
universal appeal and not just in the UK but across the
globe though it has been known by different names, in
the USA for example as the Rabbit!
There is so much to recommend these cars for everyday
use, but ultimately you need to drive one to understand
why the Golf concept, like the VW Beetle before it
has survived and remained at the forefront of modern
motoring.
We always have a range of VW Golfs in stock so feel
free to come and take a look. If we don’t have the
particular one you’re after we will find it if it’s out there.
Your purchase will be a friendly experience, smooth and
supported by our sales and customer service team. If you
wish to use finance we can sort it out with no fuss
