Brookfield Gala Day
39 39
Saturday 22 August
After four years of torrential rain on our usual May date, Brookfield’s Gala Day
will be taking place on Saturday 22 August this year, so fingers crossed for a
sunny day! However, we will be there, rain or shine! If dry, you will find us in the
field and if wet, in and around the hall.
There will be a range of stalls offering a combination of old favourites and new
ideas with some fun games for all ages. We are also reintroducing the ever
popular dog show, Crazy Crufts, with prizes to be won in various categories,
including Brookfield’s smiliest dog.
There will be two competitions taking place. The Garden in a Plate competition
will be judged in the following three categories: to 0-5 years, 6-12 years and 12
years and over (yes, adults too!), so get planning folks as our judge is looking
expecting a diverse range of gardens.
We are also holding a competition for the best hand drawn or painted picture
to represent Gala Day. This competition encompasses all ages, so bring along
your entry on the day to be judged by members of the Brookfield Art Club.
Last, but by no means least, the tea room will be open in the hall from 2.30pm
and will be offering the usual array of delicious, scones, pancakes and cakes
to tempt you. So please come along, make this a day for friends, family and
neighbours. It’s all for an excellent cause, to raise funds to maintain our lovely
village hall and open spaces.
PS - we would be very grateful if villagers would bedeck their hedges and gardens
so that we can make this a truly festive occasion. There is no need to pre register
for competitions, but further details on these and other Gala Day activities can
be found on our various social networking sites Facebook: Brookfield Village,
Twitter @Brookfieldvpa and our website www.brookfieldvillage.org.
Fairtrade support in
Renfrewshire villages & towns
Local people are being urged to join their nearest Fairtrade community group to
promote Fairtrade in Renfrewshire’s towns and villages. Councillor Jim Sharkey,
Chair of the Renfrewshire Fairtrade Steering Group, gave the call for more
members at the AGM meeting on 1 July. He also praised community groups,
schools and local champions of Fairtrade for their continuous support to the
social movement. During Fairtrade Fortnight, Renfrewshire came together for
the Fairtrade Bake off and Guatemalan Fairtrade coffee and honey farmer
Ismael Diaz Rivas visited schools and communities.
Gryffe High School and Bridge of Weir Primary both won Fairtrade
trophies for their outstanding efforts this year. Lochwinnoch
also hosted the annual Big Banana Walk and Fair Trade Safari
Suppers while Bishopton hosted pop-up cafes and family
treasure hunts with Fairtrade prizes on offer. Rainbow Turtle
organised One World Week event at the Piazza in October and
supported Bridge of Weir and Houston Fairtrade Group with
their own One World Week event in November.
Councillor Jim Sharkey said: “Fairtrade has grown from
strength to strength in Renfrewshire and a key part of that is
the support from the local community. We are lucky to have
some very dedicated people in our Fairtrade community groups but there is
always room for many more. I would urge anyone that is passionate about
Fairtrade to join their local group. Even if you can only spare a few hours each
week, there is always something you can do to support the movement.” To get
in touch with your local Fairtrade group, email fairtrade@renfrewshire.gov.uk or
