Kilbarchan Brownies
Kilbarchan Brownies had great fun organising a Bring and Buy sale in aid
of Yorkhill Children’s Charity.
Publicity posters were designed and put up in shops and notice boards,
much baking was produced, cupboards were tidied and decisions made
about which toys and books to be donated. On the night, the girls enjoyed
being in charge of the various stalls and everyone was delighted to raise
the tremendous sum of £480.
Thanks to everyone who helped make the event so successful. The picture
Newly-Elected Youth Parliament
Inverclyde Schools Building in
Civic Trust Awards 2015
Inverclyde’s unique Community Campus has received a ‘commendation’ in
an international architectural awards scheme. The Port Glasgow Community
Campus was one of 91 projects from across the world lined up to receive an
Award or Commendation in the 2015 Civic Trust Awards.
The Inverclyde building was included alongside a prestigious hotel in China;
a Russian airport and a school in Australia in the awards which included
only six projects from Scotland.
The Port Glasgow Community Campus is home to three schools – Port
Glasgow High School, St Stephen’s High School and Craigmarloch
School.
It’s one of only six building projects from Scotland on the prestigious winners
and commendations list which includes a community school in Australia;
the Waldorf Astoria building in Beijing, China and thePulkovo International
Airport in Russia.
Inverclyde Council Leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe, who opened the
community campus, said: “This is a prestigious awards ceremony and
the Community Campus has picked up a Commendation against some
incredible competition in the UK and across the world. The Community
Campus building is unique in Inverclyde and across the country. It is both
ambitious in its scale and in its delivery. All involved in delivering this project
deserve our praise and congratulations. The commendation from the Civic
Trust Awards is a fitting tribute to that hard work.”
Kevin Cooper, Director of architects Archial NORR, said: “Archial NORR is
delighted to have received a Civic Trust Commendation for this important
community project. This accolade is very rewarding for the whole team as
the building is undoubtedly a great example of a genuine collective effort for
an excellent client. We sincerely hope the users of the project continue to
enjoy it as much as we enjoyed designing it, and for many years to come”.
The awards combines the 2015 Civic Trust Awards, Pro-Tem Awards and
AABC Conservation Awards, which features 91 projects from a wide range
of national and international entries.
The 56th Annual Civic Trust Awards Ceremony took place at Shakespeare’s
Globe Theatre in London.
Hundreds of newly-elected Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament got
a warm welcome when they arrived in Renfrewshire for their first National
Sitting of the new term.
Almost 200 delegates from across Scotland came to the Sitting held at Park
Mains High School in Erskine.
And MSYPs received a warm welcome by Council Leader Mark Macmillan
ahead of their weekend long parliamentary session, who took the opportunity
to talk about the Youth Parliament’s 2015 campaign, POVERTY: See It
Change It.
Cllr Macmillan
said: “The Youth
Parliament is key to
giving young people
a voice to speak
out on things that
matter to them and
that enthusiasm
was prevalent at
the Sitting. Almost
6,500 young
people voted in
Renfrewshire in the
SYP elections, the second highest number of votes cast in a Scottish local
authority area. Young people are more engaged in the democratic process
than ever before and this is fantastic news.
“Tackling Poverty is one of the council’s top priorities and it is welcome
that this is the Scottish Youth Parliament’s campaign for 2015. Supporting
young people out of poverty was the main reason the Renfrewshire Tackling
Poverty Commission – the first of its kind in Scotland – was initiated by the
council. Our £6m tackling poverty fund will invest in a far-reaching package
of new interventions and will expand successful and proven approaches, as
we work to make sure tackling poverty is central to everything we do.”
During the two day intensive Sitting, the Leader got the chance to catchup
with Renfrewshire’s MSYPs - Emma Eck, Osama Nadeem, Mark Dougan,
Eilidh Harkness and Carrie McIntyre – to talk about the poverty campaign.
Mark Macmillan added: “Renfrewshire’s MSYPs are already working hard
on taking forward the poverty campaign and I look forward to working with
them to shine a light in every corner of youth poverty.”
The poverty campaign is seeking to raise awareness among young people
about poverty, combat poverty stigma and work with decision makers to
uphold the UK-wide commitment to tackle child poverty by 2020.
