Rebel the rabbit
Rebel paid his first visit to our local vets this
week. Hannah, the veterinary nurse,
reminded us what Rebel should be
eating. He should be eating lots of
hay because it has lots of nutrients.
“Rebel was nibbling a carrot at
the vets. He was super calm
when we were waiting
in reception,” said
Angus.
A big thank you to
Cath (Kilbarchan
Veterinary
practice) for
agreeing to
sponsor Rebel.
“He was quite
scared when
he was getting
checked over and
we got to hear his
heart beat and it was really fast!” Said Skye.
“It was awesome because I’ve never been to the vets before. Hannah was
nice and she checked Rebel to make sure he was healthy and happy,” said
Logan.
We got his worming medication and shown how to administer it. He was
very wriggly.
St Fillan’s Primary School
This has been a busy term for all at St Fillan’s. Our Fairtrade Singing Group
took part in the Bridge of Weir ‘One World Day’, Celebration in the British
Legion Hall on Saturday 31 October. They performed their song to their
families and other visitors who attended this event. They also performed to
everyone at school during our assembly time. Well done to all our brilliant
singers and to Mrs J McKay who leads our Fair Trade committee and who
prepared the pupils for their participation in this celebration.
Our next Fairtrade Coffee morning takes place on Friday 4 December
at 10am. All Welcome.
Our P6 and 7 pupils were involved in the Road Race event and enjoyed
building up their stamina to allow them to run for prolonged periods of
time.
This month has seen the school invite family and friends to attend various
open days. Feedback has been excellent. P3 shared their knowledge of
the ancient Egyptians and looked splendid in their authentic headdresses.
P4 have been studying the Vikings and one parent commented that much
effort had gone into making the boats and that the quiz was a lot of fun!
The Scottish Wars of Independence has been the topic for P5, with William
Wallace and Robert the Bruce being popular historical figures with the
children. P5 visited Bannockburn this month where pupils were involved in
a 3D battle reenactment, which Finn described as ‘epic’.
P6 regaled parents with details of Mary Queen of Scots and children in P7
have been telling parents of WWII and the Holocaust in the form of a mini
concert. P7b have been reading ‘Hana’s suitcase’ which is a non-fictional
story of a girl executed in Auschwitz. Euan commented that he has found
this particularly interesting and thought provoking and he shares hopes that
Hana’s story will continue to tell children all over the world the terrible history
of the concentration camps. Highlights of the presentation to parents were
songs of the era, poems written by pupils and the performance of a piece
for piano, violin and xylophone which was specially composed by Primary
7 teacher Mr Graham Duffy.
On their usual good form the girl and boy teams who participated in the
road relay races have done well, with Jess proudly stating that the P7 girls’
team took first place. Well done to all participants!
Finally, we are very proud of four senior pupils who recently gave a
presentation on dyslexia to the whole school at assembly. They spoke with
great confidence about some of the difficulties they have experienced in
learning to read. They explained how individual brains work in different
ways and highlighted some of the many famous people with dyslexia who
have achieved great things. They also talked about their own achievements
and how dyslexia has made them even more determined to succeed and
finished by asking everyone to show understanding towards people who
might find learning to read, write and spell challenging.
St Columba Toddler &
Playgroup
Heart Start Training took place last week for all our P7 children. This was
a full morning’s work where children learned how to deal with various
emergency incidents such as choking, heart attacks and resuscitation.
Our whole school will be taking part in health related activities later on this
month.
Everyone attended the cinema as part of National Film Week, we saw The
Book of Life’. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the pupils and staff are
now looking forward to our next whole school event in December when we
will be attending the Arts Centre for the panto ‘Sleeping Beauty’.
A special mention must go to Anna in Primary 5 who had her long hair cut
off for charity. She donated her hair to the ‘Little Princesses’ charity who
make wigs for little girls who, for various reasons, have lost their hair.
I wonder what this young man will
be when he grows up? Maybe an
engineer or a mathematician? He is
certainly concentrating hard today
on his measuring and pouring
skills and having a wonderful time
doing it. The water play is great fun
at Playgroup and an opportunity
to pour and slosh water, catch
fish and admire the various sea
creatures at the bottom of the pond. Combined with the sand tray, sponge
painting and the very popular shaving foam, these are great opportunities
for tactile play which you might not want to do in the house, but which
greatly enrich the children’s vocabulary and awareness of their senses. And
sometimes it’s just good fun to get messy! Please remember we are open
any time to visitors so please pop in for a look on a Monday, Tuesday or
Thursday morning in the lower hall of St Columba Church, Kilmacolm. For
more information, contact Emma at emma@kehoes.com.
Our Baby & Toddler group runs on Wednesday mornings from 10am to
11.30am, for children aged 0 to 3 years. For more information contact Beth
