KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
A MUST WIN GAME FOR THE FRONTNEACS
A WIN OVER OTTAWA KEEPS KINGSTON AHEAD OF HAMILTON IN THE BATTLE FOR HOME ICE
While on paper the 7th place Ottawa 67’s look
like a team that should be easy pickings for
the 4th place Kingston Frontenacs, looks can be
deceiving. In their 6 match-ups so far this season,
the 67’s have 4 wins to just 2 for the Frontenacs.
The 67’s roll into the Rogers K-Rock Centre
as a team desperate to win games and add point
to guarantee their spot in the playoffs. Sure, the
67’s sit in 7th place in a conference that sends
8 teams to the post-season, but they share that
7th spot with the Niagara IceDogs. And the North
Bay Battalions are sitting only 2 points back.
For the Frontenacs, wins aren’t going to help
they secure a spot in the post-season. They’re
virtually in, sitting in 4th place. But wins are just
as important for Kingston, who sit a single point
ahead of the Hamilton Bulldogs, and home ice
advantage in the playoffs.
The 67’s come into tonight’s game at Rogers
K-Rock Centre with only 2 wins in their past 10
games, with 7 regulation losses and 1 shootout
loss. In 59 games played this season, the 67’s
have 22 wins, 31 regulation losses, 5 overtime
losses, and 1 shootout loss.
The Frontenacs, with 11 points in their last
10 games, are coming off the loss to the 67’s
on Wednesday looking to take advantage of the
home-and-home weekend with the 67’s. After 60
games played this season, the Frontenacs have
28 wins, 23 regulation losses, 5 overtime losses,
and 4 shootout losses, good for 65 points.
SALUTE THE TROOPS PHOTO: Immediately after
tonight’s game, all members of the Canadian
Armed Forces, their families, and retirees, can
level concourse behind section 114 immediately
following the conclusion of the game. Rogers K-
Frontenacs This Week // CogecoTV
The keys to a win for the Kingston
Frontenacs tonight against the Ottawa
67’s will come down to how effective
they are on these key points in their game
plan.
1. SET THE TONE FOR THE BACK TO BACK The final
two meetings of the regular season between
these two long-time rivals happen on back
to back nights this Friday and Saturday. For
weekend winning both home games against
Niagara, as well as a huge game against
Hamilton. Confidence and momentum can
be huge in hockey and now that Kingston
seems to have both of those factors back in
their favour, it’s important that they don’t let
it get away. Stay strong, continue the good
habits, and keep the ball rolling on home ice.
3. LOCK DOWN A PLAYOFF SPOT KWith a win
over Ottawa tonight, Kingston would officially
lock up a playoff spot. They had a chance
on Wednesday in Oshawa but weren’t able
either of the two teams to be successful this
weekend they are going to have to win at least
one of the two games. The best way to ensure
that happens is to get the first one. If Kingston
sets the tone tonight on home ice, they can
carry that momentum with them on the road
tomorrow night to Ottawa. Hopefully they
have the motivation to get this one tonight
to get the back to back started off right and
that leads to consecutive wins against their
division rival.
2. KEEP THE BALL ROLLING After a couple tough
games against Western opponents recently,
Kingston’s home ice record had suffered
a little bit. They got right back on track last
to come away with a win. Now they have a
chance to do it on home ice in front of their
fans. Every hockey team sets goals at the
start of the season and one of those goals
is always to make the playoffs. With a solid
effort that results in a win tonight, they can
check that box off the list and celebrate with
their own fans at home. They would love to
lock up that spot as quickly as possible so
they can begin to focus solely on claiming
home ice advantage in round one.
ticket holder and is co-host and analyst on Frontenacs
MAKES AN IMPRESSION
14 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

y Doug Graham
Kingston Whig-Standard
Nathan Dunkley has had a season of learning and
adapting his game to the Ontario Hockey League.
Dunkley, the first pick of the Kingston Frontenacs in
last April’s Priority Selection, has turned it into a solid
rookie season.
Dunkley, who turns 17 on Sunday, is Kingston’s
fourth-highest scoring forward with 26 points in 49
games. Head coach Paul McFarland likes the way
Dunkley, a native of Campbellford, has progressed.
“He’s done a good job of getting better each month
of the season,” McFarland said.
“The challenge for Nathan is he’s got to play against
top-six forwards every night so he’s going to have to be
at his best to make a difference.”
Dunkley understands that it has been a process for
him throughout the grind of a 68-game OHL regular
season.
“I thought I’ve learned a lot so far this season. There’s
still obviously lots to learn as you grow in the league,”
said the five-foot-11, 185-pound forward.
“I always try to work my hardest (and) create chances
that way. Create some space for other guys getting in
on the forecheck.”
McFarland said consistency is the key for every
young player. They have to learn to prepare for games,
eat properly and get their rest leading up to a game.
“Nathan is getting better and better at preparing.
When he is prepared, he is ultra competitive and he’s
one of our better players,” McFarland said.
“Nathan’s biggest asset is his competitiveness.
When he is playing his best, he has the puck the whole
game because he wants it. When he is touching the
puck good things happen either for him making plays
or other guys are open because he is getting there first.”
Dunkley and McFarland both agree there is more to
come.
“He’s got to continue to be more and more consistent.
I think there’s a lot more there,” McFarland said.
“He’s 16 years old. There’s a lot of room to grow.”
Dunkley has five goals and 21 assists and his plusminus
figure -- he was a plus 1 in February’s dozen
games when he had seven points -- continues to improve.
Once Warren Foegele was moved in a trade,
Dunkley was one of the players to take over taking faceoffs.
Sam Harding and Ted Nichol, both right-hand draws,
are first and second in faceoffs while Dunkley, who is
a left-hand draw, is at 52.9 per cent success with 292
wins on the draw.
“I feel I am getting better and learning lots. It’s a good
start. I think I’ve got more to learn. Points will come as I
grow and learn more,” Dunkley said.
“We pride ourselves on playing good defensive hockey.
We don’t cheat the game. We try to play the game
(properly) and that’s been our success.”
The Frontenacs appear to be headed to being a team
that doesn’t score an average of three goals a game (under
184 goals for), ranking last in goals scored in the
Eastern Conference with 149 in 60 games.
However, the Frontenacs also rank No. 1 in the Eastern
Conference for fewest goals against with 178.
“There has been lots of tight hockey games, lots of
low-scoring games. That’s kind of our mentality. Win
with hard work and good team play,” Dunkley said.
The Frontenacs go into Wednesday’s game in Oshawa
against the Generals with a one-point advantage
over the Hamilton Bulldogs for fourth place in the Eastern
Conference.
“The last nine games will be a grind but we’re battling
for home-ice advantage. We’ve got lots to work for
and we’re prepared,” Dunkley said.
The Frontenacs have won two straight and McFarland,
in particular, likes the way his team played in Sunday’s
3-1 win over Hamilton.
“We’ve got to bring that preparation we had Sunday
to each and every game. Finishing the game, we looked
like a team that wanted to win the game,” McFarland
said.
“The number of block shots we had, the number of
50/50 pucks we came up with. Just the nature of being
able to play four lines, six (defencemen). Everyone
contributed,” he said.
“(Liam) Murray goes off for the 10-minute misconduct.
Other guys stepped up that had to play a little
more down the stretch. That’s just great to see.”
