EDITORIAL Kid stuff; energetic opportunity; thanks, Wisconsin; extrusion extravaganza What, still here? Didn’t listen to me? Well, since you decided to stay, I’ll share some good news about kids’ views on plastics, and whet your appetite for a few of the articles inside this issue of your magazine. Like you in your company, I’m tremendously proud of what we produce, and thought we hit quite a high note last month with our special Focus on Medical Innovation issue, but this month’s articles are right up there. Good news on the emerging generation front: In late January I spent a morning helping at my local elementary school, where a group of fourth-graders spent two days working their way through Kuno’s Cool Plastics Box, an interactive educational program developed and funded by PlasticsEurope, a trade group representing plastics suppliers. The boxes, which elementary schools can order, are intended to help create interest among school-age boys and girls in chemistry and plastics. The kids learn the definitions of “hydrophilic” and “hydrophobic” as well as the names of common plastics, bury a biodegradable film to see what happens, and a good bit more. It’s a busy two days, which is why the school welcomes parents’ help. I quizzed the kids, “What do you think of when you hear the word ‘plastics’?” Ask a group of adults and many, maybe most, raise issues such as trash, landfills, “dangers lurking in plastics,” and the lot. Someone will mention Mr. Robinson. I was pretty sure the kids would not have heard of bisphenol A or phthalates, and would have hit the floor if any of them mentioned Anne Bancroft, but I was dead certain they would mention trash. (Full disclosure: I was genuinely looking forward to playing schoolmarm. “People cause litter, not materials.”) plasticstoday.com/mpw A word of advice: skip this editorial and jump straight to the outstanding articles featured in this issue. But no chance: The kids mentioned Lego, Playmobil, toys in general, even packaging—things made of plastic they encounter daily. Almost spoiling for a fight, I prompted, “What about litter?” but they weren’t taking the bait. None associated plastics directly with litter; all cited only positive impressions. Sure, there is always more the industry can do on the PR front, but these smart young people recognize a good thing when they see it. • • • The amount of solar energy that falls on the planet in one hour is enough to generate sufficient power for every person on earth for one year. It’s an attention-getting fact. There remain complex issues that need to be resolved before the rays hitting the ground provide the power flowing out of your sockets, but there is no denying the huge potential the solar power industry holds. Plastics processors will play a major part in how quickly, and how successfully, solar power takes a greater role in our lives. Tony Deligio’s article on p. 28 offers a good look at an industry about to shift into very high gear, especially in North America. • • • Our thanks go out to Xten Industries in Kenosha, WI.
