Closing the loop, sustainable, good, right? You’d think so, but there’s a new hitch. The European Parliament is debating what could become a ban on antimony trioxide (ATO), a flame retardant commonly added to E/E products. Such a ban would nip the budding E/E recycling programs, which began because of a different piece of legislation, the EU’s WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Directive, which was developed to—you guessed it—encourage recycling of old TVs and other E/E gear. ATO dust is unhealthy, but when the material is locked within a plastic product, it’s doing its good deed by keeping flame retardance high. But now, with demand climbing and some prominent economies (China and India, for starters) rolling merrily along again, processors see little relief in their outlays for plastics. Monomer outages and runaway ethylene prices have been part of the problem recently for processors of polyethylene, noted Michael Greenberg, CEO of spot-trading platform The Plastics Exchange (TPE), in a recent posting for our daily e-newsletter, NewsFeed. In January alone, spot PE prices in the U.S. climbed $0.08/lb. Good news is that the monomer market is expected to ease considerably going forward. Polypropylene (PP) spot prices continued moving upward in January as well, and Resin prices got you down? There were few fresh PP offers shown to the market, and the resin that was made available was quickly sold. By running reactors at an American Chemistry Council (ACC) estimated rate of just 71.4% in December, PP producers were able to liquidate nearly a quarter billion lb from their collective inventories, leaving just 1.26 billion lb on hand at the end of last year. Greenberg said that was the lightest monthly inventory TPE has seen since it started keeping records. FIRST LOOK Names in the news New plant manager at injection molder Pereles Bros. Inc. (Milwaukee, WI) is Kent Kuecherer, who joined the firm in March 2007 in quality/continuous improvement. Kuecherer began his career in plastics in 1977 and has earned his pay at companies including Kaysun Corp., Dickten Masch, Gateway Plastics, and JW Speaker Corp. The ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics has named R. James Galipeau, general manager at Intertek PTL (Pittsfield, MA), as chairman for a two-year term. ASTM Committee D20 includes about 800 members responsible for close to 500 standards relating to plastics. Galipeau, a past president of the Society of Plastics Engineers, is also the U.S. delegate to the International Standards Organization (ISO) Technical Committee 61 on Plastics. Packaging processor InnoWare LLC (Menomenee Falls, WI) announced that its board chairman, Nicholas Clementi, has been named company CEO. Clementi takes over for Charles Woodward, who resigned as CEO and president. Milacron (Batavia, OH) recently announced that Gerold Schley is the new managing director of Ferromatik Milacron, its injection molding machinery manufacturing operation in Germany. Schley also continues to serve as VP for China and global sourcing at the company. He succeeds Guy Moilliet, who retired.
