See the photo along with this article for more information on the colonel. How ABOUT THIS? There is a muchly controversial Assembly Bill proposed, to be added to the Penal Code AB No. 3842. It briefly states that every erson who possesses a fire arm capable of being concealed must, within 72 hours after he acquires the weapon, or if he possesses a weapon on the effective date of this section, register the fact of such possession with the Chief of Police of his city. Failure to comply with this section is a misdemeanor. Did I say controversial? Think of the gun collectors' plight. Well, you take it from there. Randy McDermott was back on the lines, after a four-year layoff, with a kit full of new guns, gadgets and 'scopes. Randy ran into a lot of tuff competition and a lot of hard luck for his first day out but he sez it was a lot of fun and is sure glad he is back at the game again. I see that Fred Plough, taken right out from the City College Criminology class, is taking a job over in the Mann County Sheriff's office under our old friend Sheriff Dave Menary. Dave hasn't been with us since he took over the sheriff's job in Mann. Guess he has been too busy to do much shooting. As I walk along the lines during the .45 matches I notice that quite a few of the shooters are using .45 revolvers now instead of the automatic. Wonder wot hoppen and why. Maybe it's a good thing to look into some day. Several inquiries have been made of me about the rumor that the new freeway is going right smack thru the Oakland Pistol Club range. Relax, boys and gals, it's just a rumor as the freeway will go thru the west end of the zoo which is about threequarters of a mile away from the pistol range. April - May, 195 POLICE AND PEACE OFFICERS' JOURNAL Page 21 1957 INDOOR PISTOL CHAMPS By J. Ross DUNNIGAN Took a flying trip to the 1957 NRA Indoor Pistol Championship matches held last month at the U. S. Naval Base range in San Bruno. This was one of the thirty such matches held all over the United States during the month of March to determine the champs of the teams and individuals. There was just the one match held in California. Some 85 shooters from all over the state showed up for the matches in San Bruno where the marines have a very fine 23 firing point range for the .22 gun only. The matches at San Bruno were sponsored by the Mainliner Rifle-Pistol Club (the United Airlines) under the secretaryship of John Low—and a swell Job the Mainliners turned out. Ray Felton, from the Oakland Club, acted as referee. This match, or these matches, are for the US indoor .22 caliber championships, both teams and individuals and are shot under NRA rules. The matches are the slow timed and rapid strings of 20 shots, one short national plus the aggregate of matches 1, 2, 3 and 4. For good measure they threw in an extra match for the NRA building Fund made up of the aggregate of matches 2 and 3. Colonel Leon Rouge, SF Presidio, won the high aggregate match and the building fund aggregate match. Scores received too late for publication. And speaking along those lines I might add that there is no need to worry about the freeway going thru the middle of the shooting range as it will be down at the west end of the zoo which end is some mile or so away from the shooting area.
