By no two-way stretch of the imagination should he be allowed to feel that the mission can be accomplished, understand. But don't come right out and say that if you could get him out of this it would be the most sensational thing that's happened since Dr. Dafoe held up a hand instead of a finger to Mr. Dionne. You've got to time yourself, first by letting him know that it's improbable, then unlikely, then impossible. Finally like unscrewing the inscrutable. Mix in a little Pei, se, personna non grata and ipso facto if he seems intelligent. IT'S THE PRINCIPLE We haven't discussed the little matter of the fee. We aren't going to let you down easy. A generous sample can be obtained by listening to a group of traffic cases being tried anywhere. How often does the judge turn to the officer and tell him he made a mistake? "The man wasn't speeding, officer. He says so himself." "You must be colorblind, officer. I don't believe the light was red." Then the little fairy prince tapped her on the shoulder and said, "Shall we dance?" SELDOM WRONG Why is the defendant found guilty? Frankly, because he should be. That's a shocking and arbitrary answer, but true. There are exceptional cases where the traffic cop is wrong, there will be and continue to be illegal tickets issued, but we can't soak up your valuable time discussing rare instances. Let's stick to the general. The misdemeanor has been witnessed, not only by an eyewitness, but a trained eyewitness who is fulfilling the duty of a public servant. When your client says to you, "The judge won't take my word, he'll take the police officer's word," he has indeed said a mouthful. We come now to that expressive connotation, the "speed trap."
