This self-drive tour will have you spend your overnight stays in Paradors; luxury hotels<br />
located in refurbished historic buildings and castles.<br />
Day 1, Madrid – Salamanca: Arrive at the airport and pick up your AVIS pre-reserved<br />
car. Then head towards medieval Avila to admire the walls, said to be among the best<br />
preserved in all of Europe. Then on to Salamanca, for check-in at your hotel, Castillo del<br />
Buen Amor which dates back to 1227.<br />
Day 2, Salamanca – Leon: Drive north passing Zamora and Benavente to Leon. Your<br />
accommodations are in the unique Parador set in the 16th century San Marcos Monastery.<br />
It’s your base to visit Astorga, or Ponterrada’s fantastic templar castle. (B)<br />
Day 3, Leon – Valladolid – Burgos: Drive to the very heart of Spanish history. Start<br />
through Castile, stopping at Tordesillas’ Convent of Santa Clara and Medina del Campo’s<br />
Castillo de la Mota. Then to your castle-hotel in Burgos: the Señorio de Olmillos. (B)<br />
Day 4, Burgos – Rioja Wine Area – Olite: Travel through Rioja wine territory with a stop<br />
in Laguardia to visit to the polychromed Church of our Lady. Make sure to stop at one of<br />
the many wineries for a tour and tasting. Arrive at the Parador of Olite, a converted<br />
castle. (B)<br />
Day 5, Olite – Alcañiz: Drive through Zaragoza, with a stop to see its basilica complex.<br />
Then head for your destination today, the Parador de Alcañiz in a 12th century castle. (B)<br />
Day 6, Alcañiz – Alarcón: Motor through some of the most beautiful locations of Spain;<br />
Albarracin, former capital of a Moorish kingdom. Or visit the Mora de Rubielos, one of<br />
the most attractive towns in Teruel, before arriving at the Parador de Alarcón for a<br />
2-night stay. (2B)<br />
Day 7, Alarcón: Breakfast and then tour Alarcón – or visit what is probably the best<br />
preserved castle in Spain: The Castillo de Belmonte, an hour’s drive west of Alarcon. (B)<br />
Day 8, Alarcón – Madrid: Return to Madrid and drop your car at the airport. (B)<br />
Hotels (or similar): Salamanca: Castillo del Buen Amor, Leon: Parador de León,<br />
Burgos: Señorio de Olmillos, Olite: Parador de Olite, Alcañiz: Parador de Alcañiz,<br />
Alarcón: Parador de Alarcón.<br />
