Complementing what we already do with medical services seemed to be a good thing.” Little London Medical Clinic is in a vintage house on a lane at the Waikato River end of London St, in the same unique enclave where it began under Tim Rogers nearly 106 years ago. Dr Rogers developed a reputation for altruism, looking after many needy Hamilton families. He practised for about 60 years and was joined by his two sons, Anthony and Denis, both of them general practitioners. For a long time, the Rogers family didn’t charge for consultations and their income was derived solely from Government subsidies. The Rogers brothers were influential in local and national politics. Denis was mayor of Hamilton from 1959-1968, and Anthony was the Labour MP for Hamilton East from 1972- 1975. They were also stalwart lobbyists for the establishment of Waikato University. Dr Winn came to work with the Rogers’ brothers in 1985, later joined by his wife, Dr Vant, and Dr Topping, and the trio eventually owned the practice after Anthony retired in 1991, aged 78. In an interview with the Waikato Times when he stepped down, Anthony noted the close links he had developed with his patients. He said with the increase in group medical practices the personal relationship between doctor and patient was being lost in many instances. “The Rogers family left a great legacy,” says Dr Topping. She continues to use Denis Rogers’ desk in her consulting room, and she and Dr Winn still care for a cluster of people from the Rogers’ era. One-on-one contact with their patients remains the bedrock of their service and Dr Winn and Dr Topping say this style of practice gives them flexibility to discount costs to some, and to truly get to know the families they deal with. The clinic was recently rated seventh out of 86 practices in the Midlands Health Network’s annual quality assurance results, and it was the top scorer in Hamilton. No immediate changes at Little London are envisaged, and Dr Winn and Dr Topping welcome the new ownership. It provides a strong succession plan for them, and they’re likely to be joined by some new doctors and patients. Says Dr Winn: “Being part of an organisation with various community involvements is very exciting.” Peacocke’s development grows Hamilton City Council has found a way to accommodate 160 more houses into the first stage of its Peacocke’s development.
