So I (Katie Gilbert, Editor of VFM, mom,
wife and general busy body) decided earlier
this year as one of my New Year resolutions
to do more and try new experiences that
will challenge me personally! I have always
life superheroes. Challenge set... I want to

Pershore, Pebworth and Broadway.
After taking the plunge and completing an
online application, I was pleased I stuck to my
resolutions (which is very rare for me) and
promptly received my invitation to an aptitude
test in Worcester which I passed, which was a
pleasant surprise! I then headed to Redditch
Fire Station for the physical part of the
recruitment process.
Unfortunately I didn’t pass the physical part
of the challenge (this time)! But, it is
something I will remember for the rest of my
life as it was such an amazing experience! I
now know not only what I need to do to pass
but that I am braver, stronger and crazier
than I ever thought.
I am so pleased to have had the experience
and anyone that puts themselves forward
to the recruitment process. The one thing
that surprised me was the support I had
throughout my whole application, I was
worried I would be wasting the services time,
but until you try - how can you know for sure it
is what you want and can do? I cannot express
my application as well as Evesham Fire Station
who welcomed me into the station, detailing
and showed me full support throughout my
application process.

Family festival
organised by family
Local family woman, VW fan and
event organiser Natalie Clements
started a family festival Dubs in
the MIddle in Evesham in January
2014. Every year her shows grows,
bringing many visitors to the area
and raising lots of money for
charities along the way. Natalie
loves it so much this year's event she
will be getting married at the show.
We think Natalie from Evesham,
mom of 2 is pretty awesome, so we
asked her some questions to share
her good work with you.
How much have you raised and who
for? Over £9000 - Help For Heroes
(£1968) Helen and Douglas house
(£2400+ - stall and donation) Air
Ambulance (4000+) and around
£600 yet to be donated along with
whatever we generate this year.
Evesham Sea Cadets is nominated
charity this year.
Who inspires you? My Mum and Dad
life in general - they work hard and
have made me want to do the same,
they give so much to help others
and they made me who I am today.
My Grandad was a huge person in
my life until he sadly passed away
and was the reason I go into charity
work with doing The Poppy Appeal/
British Legion for years with him.
Natalie added “These shows are
more than just a hobby to me!
They are a way of life, a life that my
partner and children have supported
me on! I like to give back what I
can to the community as you never
know when you will need it, good
karma right?
“I have made so many friends
through the festivals and that’s why
we decided to hold our wedding
blessing at the show - we like to
think we have 3000+ guests and
everyone is entitled to a slice of cake
(its 4ft x 2.5ft of cake so plenty to go
around)”

always been my Mum. She has always
supported me through tricky times at
school and while moving to university,
when I studied to become a teacher.
Now I am a teacher, I hope to be
just as good as my Mum at teaching
young children.

watch the children I teach grow up.

•650g/1lb 7oz waxy potatoes,
peeled
•1 onion, sliced into wedges
•4-6 cloves garlic, unpeeled
•Shoulder of Badsey Butcher
•30ml/2 tbsp fresh thyme or
10ml/2tsp dried
•10ml/2 tsp olive oil
•salt and freshly ground black
pepper
•300ml/1/2pt dry white wine
or water
Method
Preheat your oven to 200oC/Fan
180oC/400oF/Gas Mark Squeeze
the juice from the Lemons. Cut the
potatoes into large chunks and place
in a large roasting tin with the onion
wedges, garlic and sliced lemon.
Pour over half the oil, lemon juice
and wine (or water).
Place the shoulder of lamb on top of
the vegetables, then drizzle over the
remaining oil, scatter over the thyme
lemon zest and plenty of seasoning
then rub this all into the skin.
Reduce the oven temperature to
170oC/Fan 150oC/ 325oF/Gas Mark 3
then bake the lamb for 1hr 20 mins.
Remove the foil, baste the meat with
the pan juices. Roast uncovered for a
further 1hr 30 mins until the potatoes
are golden and the lamb tender.s
