Chapter Seven
Gunner had pretty much had a child on the carpet when he
found the email with the EVP. So I was only mildly surprised when,
on Thursday morning, he called me into the den and announced that
he had found the song that matched the notes.
“How long have you been working on this?” I teased. “You
need to go out and get a date.”
“Ew,” he responded. “Just listen.” Then he pressed play and
the harmonica in the beginning of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” floated
from the speakers. As soon as the three notes had finished, he
switched over to the recording of the whistle and played that for me.
“Holy balls,” I exclaimed. The kid was right — the tune
matched perfectly. “Seriously, Gunner, how did you find this?”
He shrugged. “I knew it sounded familiar. So I just went
through iTunes and listened to a lot of well-known songs. I was
hoping that it wouldn’t be some obscure thing that would take me
years to locate.”
“Apparently not. I’m really impressed, dude. This is
awesome!” I wrapped my arms around his neck in a rather violent
sisterly hug. Trouble got up from his place under the desk and started
to bark at me to stop hurting his buddy.
After that, I had no choice but to text Tucker. I had been
trying to avoid thinking about him for the past few days (although it
hadn’t really been working; my brain found a link to him from
almost everything that I looked at). The warm, happy, electric
feeling had subsided considerably since I hadn’t seen him. But when
I looked through my phone for his name, I felt my heart stirring a
little again.
I sent him a text saying that Gunner had found the song that
matched the EVP, and he called me back almost immediately.
“What’s the song? I’ll listen to it right now.”
“’Piano Man’ by Billy Joel,” I replied.
“I’ll call you right back. I need my phone to get to my
music.”
