Nora Murrant, FCA, FCBV Visits to the Districts 38 CheckMark • Autumn 2009 Around the Districts Through tax clinics, career information activities, sponsorships and other communications programs and contacts, the Institute’s 23 District CA Associations play an important role in projecting our profession's local community profile. They are also the focus of local CA fellowship. Nora Murrant, FCA, FCBV, the Institute’s Executive Vice-President and COO, provides leadership for the District Associations system. Business, high school and university audience events, as well as member functions, have all been a traditional part of the Institute Chair’s visits to the Districts. Many important matters need to be shared and discussed with all members on a timely basis, including work taking place pursuant to the national strategic direction for the CA profession and ongoing changes to the Ontario legislative landscape. 2008-2010 Chair Gerry Mills is now in the second year of his term and will strive to visit each of the Districts at least once during his tenure. Our new President and CEO, Rod Barr, and other senior Institute volunteers and staff are augmenting Gerry’s visits around the province to ensure that we maintain a current interaction with members, students and other CA profession stakeholders. At this time, the following visits have been booked: December 9 Hamilton (UFE celebration reception) December 17 Ottawa (UFE celebration luncheon) January 20 Thunder Bay (Northwestern Ontario DA) February 11 Niagara May 12 Scarborough Please watch for a notice from your local DA for more information, and come out to meet Gerry, Rod and the other Institute representatives when they visit your community. Golfing for Charity To extend the reach of the annual CA Golf Day for Children’s Charities across the province, a number of DAs hold local charity golf events to complement the Torontobased Institute event. Below are highlights of a few of the 2009 events. The Essex-Kent CA Association raised $5,000 for the John McGivney Children’s Centre at its 8th Annual Charity Golf Tournament held on Thursday, May 28. A total of 63 golfers participated in the Texas scramble at Kingsville Golf and Country Club. The Hamilton District CA Association’s 2009 Children’s Charity CA Golf Day was another great success. The 2009 tournament was held on June 2 at Dundas Valley Golf & Country Club and raised an impressive $15,000 for the McMaster Children’s Hospital. The Hamilton DA is very proud to have raised $53,000 over the past six years for this deserving charity and would like to thank all of the sponsors and golfers who made this event possible.
