Congratulatory Message
Congratulations on the 80th Anniversary of the founding of the Department.
From those early days to the present, the Department has responded to the needs of
Hong Kong in educating and training young people in the mechanical, aviation and
marine fields.
I was involved in the formative years of the Department and the Polytechnic when there was
a great expansion of student members and courses. Links with industry were very strong
and major donations were received, particularly from leading shipowners. The Hong Kong
Polytechnic was the first tertiary institution in Hong Kong to establish links with China and
I led the China Liaison Office in arranging successful visits and collaboration agreements.
Research was growing and the combined momentum of all these developments led to
university status in 1994.
I am very pleased to note the great contribution of the Department to the continuing success
of the Hong Kong Polytechnic, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the staff, students
and alumni.
