A Brief History of Our Department (1937-2017)<br />
80 years ago, the Government Trade School was<br />
established to provide technical education to<br />
youngsters in Hong Kong. About 20 of these youngsters<br />
received education in Automobile Engineering. The<br />
Government Trade School has since been transformed<br />
into the Hong Kong Technical College, the Hong Kong<br />
Polytechnic and it is now known as The Hong Kong<br />
Polytechnic University.<br />
The unit which provided education to the twenty-odd<br />
youngsters in 1937 has also gone through different<br />
stages of transformation, having the identities of<br />
Graduating class in 1953<br />
Department of Automobile Engineering, Department<br />
of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mechanical/Production Engineering, Department of Mechanical,<br />
Production and Marine Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Marine Engineering and is now The Department<br />
of Mechanical Engineering.<br />
The Department has grown substantially over the years. It now has a total student population of 1,000, with more than<br />
300 students graduating each year.<br />
2017 is the year of our 80th Anniversary. We are taking this opportunity to present a brief history of our Department.<br />
