Random Acts of Kindness program approved in St. Peters

There now is a way to recognize people
responsible for random acts of kindness in
St. Peters.
City residents and individuals who own
a business in the city are now eligible for
a program designed to recognize those for
“going above and beyond with demonstrations
of acts of kindness in our community,”
according to eligibility requirements
developed by the city.
The city’s “Random Acts of Kindness”
program will recognize individuals quarterly
with award certificates, signed by
the mayor, which will be presented at a
regularly scheduled Board of Aldermen
meeting.
Those details, including eligibility
requirements, were released in April.
The nomination forms are available at
city hall, 1 St. Peters Centre Blvd. or by
sending an email to volunteer@stpetersmo.net.
The application also is online at
the city’s website at www.stpetersmo.net
under the “I want to” heading at the top of
the first page.
The form asks for specific examples of
what the nominee did to demonstrate kindness
to benefit the community or individuals
outside of the nominee’s own family.

Nominations will be accepted on an
ongoing basis but must be submitted at least
30 days before the presentation date for
consideration that quarter. The nominations
will be reviewed by a committee of city staff
appointed by the city administrator, which
will forward their recommendations to the
board. The honorees also will be featured in
city publications.
Alderman Judy Bateman [Ward 2] presented
the idea for the awards program to
other board members at a work session on
Feb. 23. Bateman told aldermen that there
are individuals in the community who are
doing things for others, sometimes for
years, without recognition.
Her idea is to keep politics and government
out of the selection by not opening
the program to people who are government
employees or whose profession involves
working with residents.
“It’s our residents recognizing other residents
that are under the radar, so to speak,”
Bateman said.
City officials said the program not only
recognizes people that make the city a
better place to live but may motivate residents
to see the good happening in their
St. Peters City Hall
community.
Aldermen said they liked the idea and
gave it voice approval in February.
No bill is expected to be drafted to put
any recognition program in place. However,
Alderman Jerry Hollingsworth [Ward
2] said that Bateman needed to sit down
with city officials to figure out the program’s
details, including how it would be
structured, how people would be selected
and how they would be recognized.
Since then, Bateman and city staff have
determined those details and suggested
that plaques or photos of honorees might
be hung in a special place at city hall.
To be eligible, nominees must be city
residents or own a business in St. Peters.
Groups are also eligible. There is no age
limit.
The mayor and aldermen, as well as their
immediate families, are not eligible to
make nominations or receive awards. Also
not eligible for an award are people who
have specific jobs or volunteer duties [that
involve service to the community], matters
of controversy, ideological or religious
issues and issues that are contrary to city
policies.
