Praise where it’s due
It’s time to give yourselves a pat on the back
because, in the main, you’re doing a pretty
fine job - much better than in previous years if
the numbers are anything to go by..
We’re all familiar with the term ‘cowboy’ tradesman. It’s a
fact of business life that there will always be someone
ready to undercut you and, probably, do a bad job of the
work once they get the contract. If the world was perfect, Matt
Allwright and the Watchdog team would not be looking for Rogue
Traders because everyone would be giving every job 100% and
charging fair rates. It is because we live in the real world that we
have services like Checkatrade, Ratedpeople and Trustatrader
and it is again because we live in the real world that even these
types of schemes have their exploiters (as our friends at
Watchdog will tell you).
In the security industry there have been a number of third
party schemes initiated to improve the playing field and unseat
the cowboys. From manned guarding to security installers,
whether it is your body, your brain or your technical expertise
that’s in demand there is a certification or accreditation scheme
just for you.
For security installers the main two third party accreditations
come from NSI and SSAIB, both well-established and well
respected. It was at the recent NSI Installer Summit that a few
numbers thrown around made me realise that our industry
should actually be rather proud of itself and, perhaps, while the
cowboys will always be there maybe they are mostly firing
business blanks in the face of raised standards and innovative
new technology these days.
According to speaker Ken Meanwell, Police CPI, the level of
false alarm callouts has dropped by 90% in the last ten years
with an 11% reduction in last year alone. That’s an awesome
statistic that should result in a massive pat on the back for
installers, manufacturers and the emergency services who have
all contributed to this result. And if that wasn’t enough for you,
Richard Jenkins of NSI reported that because today’s installers
are committed to raising standards, the number of customer
complaints received by the NSI has gone down by 50% in just two
years. That is very worthy of note.
A few years ago we ran an article asking whether third party
accreditation is a worthwhile pursuit when so often the bottom
line is the deciding factor for contracts. The aforementioned stats
prove that the hard work being put in behind the scenes by all the
professional parties in raising standards is certainly worthwhile
and if you doubt the importance of accreditation check out the
opinions of your peers on page 44. Well done!
Aico recently hosted an educational visit to
its Centre of Excellence for students of Dudley
College studying Performing Engineering
Operations (PEO) Foundation Level 1.
Eleven students, aged 16-18, accompanied
by two lecturers from the College, were given
a tour around Aico’s newly extended Centre of
Excellence in Oswestry, Shropshire, taking
advantage of the training facilities.
“As these students are not yet in the trade,
the purpose of this visit and what they get out
of it is the importance of smoke alarms and
an exposure to the construction of smoke
alarms” comments David Daley, Electrical
Lecturer, Dudley College. “The visit also
widens their electrical knowledge base and,
as their careers progress they may even be
installing Aico products. All the students
have completed positive reports in their
journals and have actually retained a lot of
the information passed on to them.”
Installer fits system for vehicle
tracking across entire fleet
Neil Berrisford, Operations Director and Ben
Richards, Extinguisher Technician, Tecserv UK
Tecserv UK has installed an all-in-one vehicle
tracking solution from BigChange across its
entire fleet of vans.
Headquartered in Underwood, Nottingham
the company designs, installs and maintains
commercial fire and intruder alarms, CCTV and
access control systems. Tecserv UK chose the
JourneyWatch system from BigChange which
combines real-time tracking of vans, separation
of business and private mileage and an
integrated driver mobile app that manages
timesheets, expenses and gives its technicians
feedback after each journey to encourage safe
and responsible driver behaviour.
Contact centre agents at Tecserv’s
monitoring centre in Nottingham liaise with
customers to respond to urgent reactive service
requests as well as to manage the ongoing
installation and routine servicing of alarm and
CCTV hardware. With a team of field based
service engineers covering the UK, maintaining
complete visibility of the entire operation can
be a challenge.
The JourneyWatch system from BigChange
gives all call-centre agents and planners
instant visibility of the live location and
progress of all company technicians. Integrated
customer relationship management (CRM)
means that all customer sites are saved in the
system, so that rather than just seeing the
name of a street, operators can instantly
understand which contact each engineer is
visiting.
When responding to urgent reactive work,
the system identifies available engineers in
order of proximity together with information
about their skills, qualifications and the type of
vehicle and tools that they have available. This
has enabled Tecserv UK to enhance response
times ensuring that the ideal resource attends
every job. This is supported by a variety of
proactive alerts that enable efficient
management of the operation. These include
automatic emails and text messages to drivers
and management when vehicles travel on toll
roads or enter the London congestion charging
zone, ensuring fees are paid and fines not
incurred.
Alerts also highlight when vehicles have
been stopped at a location for an excessive
period of time.
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to Stephen Leigh,
Sales Director of Argus
Fire & Security Ltd. Argus
have been providing the latest in fire
alarms and burglar alarm technology for
industrial, commercial and domestic customers for
over 30 years.
Your company ethos is to supply the highest level of burglar alarm
protection and in recent years you have doubled your monitored base.
What has been the driving factor for this?
A major factor has been the continued investment in our company and staff,
leading to more prestigious contract opportunities and a high customer
retention rate. Our customers are generally very loyal and frequently
recommend our business and the services we offer to others.
Digital Communicators provide a lucrative revenue stream for many
installers. What prompted your decision to stop supplying them?
Argus stopped offering this service around three years ago after trialling the
then new DigiAir Product, deciding that single path radio products offered
much greater flexibility and reliability. Products such as DigiAir offer very
versatile attributes that improve the level of security over the old Digi Com
service, which could be very vulnerable to attack as it was not polled regularly
enough and in some instances not at all. We are currently on a campaign to
change-out our legacy base of Digi’s to single path wireless. We have also
found that when including the telephone call cost of a Digi Com service that
polled twice daily, the overall cost of a DigiAir to the customer can often be
lower. Surprising as it may seem, many customers choose to upgrade to
Grade 2 dual path signalling at this stage due to the very small additional
cost, and benefits of Dual path.
You have told me Argus operates a best practice policy of only quoting
specifications based on risk. How do you maintain this approach with
growing competitive pressure in the market?
As an NSI approved installer we carry out risk assessments for all new
installations, this ensures that our bespoke professional quotations are fit for
purpose and meet all necessary requirements for our customer’s needs. Not
all companies provide this service, and we believe this gives us a professional
advantage against some other Installers who do not.
You mention that risk assessments aid your decision on system
design, how do you see system designs changing in the coming years.
Risk assessments are crucial to designing the appropriate system, I see many
manufacturers offering system apps and mobile device notification solutions.
Although progressive and arguably convenient, these systems will never
replace the need for high security police response systems. The biggest
concern I see in the coming years is non accredited companies selling
inadequate systems, which is not good for the consumer or the industry.
How do you see Home Automation and the Internet of Things (IoT)
impacting your business over the next 5 years?
We believe that Home Automation and App based security including the
cloud, should be complementary to - rather than in place of - high security
police response alarm systems. When used appropriately IoT provides
additional benefits to high security systems and greater flexibility and
functionality for the lesser secure systems. There will be more customer
demand for App based systems, but in the main we believe these will replace
conventional audible only and speech dialler systems. We strongly believe in
the benefits of IoT, especially Apps for CCTV, and feel this is a growing area
that will benefit us all.
YOU SAID IT!
“CSL are certainly out in front when it comes to secure wireless innovation.
Another bullet-proof solution to flakey insecure CCTV Broadband sites.”
Specification, lens control
and information sheets
NOTE: This PSI Product Test
was carried out by an
independent third party,
not editorial staff. The
manufacturer had no input in
the review or the final result
The camera
provides a TVI
compatible HD
output along with an
SD output and has
motorised lens
functions. Three high
intensity infrared
LEDs are mounted on
each side of the lens
to provide long range
scene illumination. A stiff
plastic strip is bonded to the
inside of the clear bowl to
prevent light from the LEDs
leaking internally into the lens.
The camera has an ingress
protection rating of IP68 and is
stated as ‘Vandal proof’ but no IK
impact code rating is given.
Getting started
The documentation is quite limited with the
camera’s details provided on multiple sheets with
the setup instructions in a small 18-page guide
entitled EX-SDI (Extended Serial Digital Interface).
This is quite misleading as the camera does not
appear to support the SDI system, just the more
common TVI (Transport Video Interface) for High
Definition images. The Serage website did not at
the time of testing provide any additional or
updated details and also referred to SDI while
promoting TVI standard cameras.
Connection is straightforward as the camera’s
composite cable is provided with a Yellow BNC
connector for the SD (Standard Definition)
analogue output, a Black BNC for the HD analogue
output and a 2-pole connector for the 12/24-volt
supply input.
At power-up the camera displays its initial
settings for approximately 8 seconds at the bottom
of the screen on both the SD and HD outputs. The
lens goes through a brief calibration routine and
auto-focusses on the scene.
Operation
All camera functions are accessed by way of a
miniature joystick switch mounted on the
connection PCB in the dome’s chassis. Initially
this joystick provides lens function control but if
held down for a couple of seconds invokes the
OSD menu structure. A two-pole connector next
to the joystick can be used with the supplied
phono connector lead to access the video feed
from the camera for set-up purposes.
Installation is likely to be straightforward but
care will need to be taken to ensure that the
very small Allen screw in the side of the bayonet
style mounting base is secured to lock the dome
in place. The clear bowl must be carefully
rotated to ensure the IR screening is correctly
aligned with the lens.
The inclusion of the separate SD output lead
means that for applications such as entrance
monitoring, this feed can be used to drive a
local monitor while the HD-TVI signal is fed back
to the control room recorder.
Three axis sensor module adjustment means
that it can be wall or ceiling mounted.
Menu Options
There are 11 menu options in total; the first two
cover lens control features such as auto-focus
configuration and exposure control. Six further
options cover all image parameters including
white balance, backlight compensation control,
day / night switching with threshold levels and
digital noise management. Two options cover
operating modes for CCTV format setting and
the final option is for serial control baud rate
and camera address (0 to 255).
Performance
The camera performs well and with its factory
settings switched from colour to mono at
around 10 lux scene illumination, returning to
colour when the level reached just over 20 lux.
In colour mode, reasonable colour imagery was
maintained well below 1 lux, albeit with
significant AGC noise although this is limited
effectively by the DNR (Dynamic Noise
Reduction) function. There was some noticeable
de-saturation of colours when operating below
30 lux. Menu options can be used to
significantly modify the performance however to
suit the requirement, so Sens Up can be
implemented if there is likely to be limited
movement in low-light scenes.
Some “hunting” of the day / night function
was noticed when a bright object was
introduced into a low light level scene but this
settled down quite quickly after a re-focus cycle
and would be improved by carefully setting the
switching threshold levels to suit the exact
scene being observed.
While the lens was stated to have a 2.8 to 12mm
TEST
7.5 out of 10
(continued from p12)
range, no figures for field of view
were provided. In testing the
horizontal field of view was observed
to be approximately 84° at wide
angle and 32° when fully zoomed in.
This would suggest a 3:1 rather than
over 4:1 ratio or 2.8 to 8.5mm
perhaps.
The internal shrouding of the camera
is very limited so it is possible to clearly see
the lens motor casings and their multicoloured
wiring when viewed from beneath
the dome. This helps identify the camera’s
direction of view and potentially exposes
vulnerabilities in its construction.
The supplied information is quite limited and
the lack of any additional support information
online is a concern. Menu options such as Burst
Frequency and Gain are available with ranges from
0 to 255 and 0 to 128 respectively but are stated as
B/W features rather than colour sub-carrier
features and their purpose is not explained.
16 privacy zones are provided for but the
settings for these were illogical and appeared to
depend on un-masking areas rather than setting
them, the limited instructions did not help in
this regard.
Serial commands for infrared and lens control
are supported using Pelco D protocol when used
with a compatible control system as there is no
RS485 connector in the dome.
An aluminium plate is mounted behind the LEDs
to help dissipate heat. When the LEDs are running,
this was found to have a mean temperature of 55°C
with a 25°C ambient. The area around the LEDs was
found to be just over 60°C. The main camera
components ran relatively cool at around 38 to
40°C.
Night time performance showed good contrast
images from the infrared source and subjects were
illuminated up to the stated 70 metres with the
Smart IR setting suitably adjusted. While stated as
‘Perfect Anti-Reflection’ there was some evidence
of reflections impacting the lens but with careful
adjustment of the clear bowl position this could be
minimised.
Conclusion
A very capable camera but somewhat let down by
its documentation that could do with improved
translation and an expansion of details. The range
of image settings should allow the camera to suit a
wide variety of applications.
Ethos 4485 Laser Distance Meter
calibration required prior to use and the buttons
on the front of the unit are clear enough to be
able to guess what they will do without looking
through the instruction manual.
What’s in the box?
4485 device
Instruction manual
Lanyard
Carry pouch
Batteries
All in all this is a very
simple unit which
would be an ideal
choice for anyone
looking to replace a
tape measure/wheel
9 out of 10
There cannot be a toolbox in the country that
does not contain at least one tape measure
and while these are staples of the
tradesman’s kit they can be a bit of a pain when
quoting for jobs that require multiple
measurements being taken at a time. Thankfully
there is an alternative for those who have ever
had a tape snap back on them or had trouble
getting the tape edge to stay in place. The
alternative is the laser distance meter, a tool that
uses a timed laser pulse to measure the distance
involved and there are plenty on the market to
choose from depending on your requirements.
The unit under review here is the Ethos 4485
Laser Distance Meter available in the UK from
electrical wholesaler CEF, or City Electrical Factors
as you may know them.
Getting started
Quite often when it comes to new technology
replacing an established solution there is an
element of complication involved however the
4485 needs nothing more than the two supplied
batteries being inserted and the lanyard being
attached before it is ready to go. There is no
Performance
With the batteries inserted and the lanyard
attached the meter was put to the test. The unit is
switched on using the MEAS button and the
desired unit of measurement is chosen with UNIT.
The choices are metric or imperial in six different
formats and the only other decision to make is
whether you want the measurement to be taken
from the front or back of the unit (described as
the reference point in the manual).
By holding the unit level, utilising the small
spirit level on the side, then pressing MEAS the
reading is taken and shown on the screen, which
can be backlit if required. This reading can then
be stored (internal capacity is 99 recordings) or
used as the first in a series of measurement to
reach a total figure. There is no way to download
readings to another device/media from the unit or
its internal storage.
Other features on the unit are area and volume
measurement, continuous measurement and a
very handy Pythagoras mode for taking
measurements on occasions when the line of
sight is blocked, perhaps by pallets etc. This does
involve the taking of a number of readings, but
the unit does all of the calculations required. The
device also has a thread on the reverse so that it
can be attached to a tripod/stand should the
need arise.
Conclusion
The 4485 can measure distances up to 60m
which, as there is no magnified view finder, could
be tricky for outdoor use in daylight, but not too
much of a problem if there is a clear line of sight
and the unit can be held still using the
aforementioned tripod.
There are a number of products on the market
that use a laser to measure distances from a host
of manufacturers, however not all of these boast
the same features as this little IP54 rated unit
packs in, a point worth noting for those checking
the specs of potential purchases.
All in all this is a very simple unit which would
be an ideal choice for anyone looking to replace a
tape measure/wheel for something with better
handling and speed of reading - even if it does
feature a button that says CLEAR OFF.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss
new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day
activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our
attention so here we take a look at some of the products we
think you won’t want to miss this month.
PTZ for city surveillance with
40x optical zoom
The outdoor, vandal-proof, Full-HD, PTZ camera
WV-X6531N from Panasonic comes equipped with
a 40x optical zoom, intelligent zoom stabiliser and
intelligent analytics for vehicle incident detection.
In addition, cost reducing technologies, including
a combination of H.265 and smart coding
technology, use smart algorithms to reduce the
bandwidth of security footage.
According to the company this means that the
cameras can reduce the data storage requirement
by around 70% for moving scenes and up to 90%
for static scenes, beyond the last generation of
Panasonic outdoor PTZ cameras.
In addition, built-in electrical dehumidification
and ClearSight coating increase the operational
availability of outdoor cameras in wet weather.
The coated surface resists water stains and dust
accumulation, reducing the need for
maintenance and improving the
usability and clarity of security footage.
Enhanced password control for recording device
installation security
The Videcon and Concept Pro team has announced the arrival of Sequrinet
password protection on the range of professional recording devices. From the
beginning of April, installers will have the option of Enhanced Password Control,
this will prohibit the use of ‘1234’ and other easily infiltrated passwords and only
allow the use of passwords that feature a combination of numbers, lower case
letters, upper case letters and symbols that are over five characters long.
Enhanced Password Control will also remove the use of drop down user name
profiles. Upon selection, the EPC will remove any backdoor user capability and will
disable P2P and DDNS options by default.
The company says that it understands that certain
installations will not require such a high level of security;
therefore, EPC is purely optional. Compatibility with
organisations requiring a stringent level of password protection is essential and it is this compatibility that improves
the market suitability of the system for use in government, public space and banks.
INTERVIEW
An emphasis on training
Formerly known as Defence Security Systems, PSI visited Securenett
Security Systems the newly rebranded business at its Cradley Heath
premises to meet the team
ore than £1m has gone into the whole
MPrime House site in the last two years
with the refurbishment of the Training
Academy, a former billiard table factory, costing
over £100,000.
The Training Academy is part of the
Securenett portfolio and falls under the remit of
Operations Compliance Director Karl Northall
and Technical Manager Ray Flanagan. Inside the
training area there are modular units that allow
swift changes from different intruder and fire
panels plus a large area for presentations. The
facility also gives Ray a place to break apart and
study new kit from suppliers prior to
recommending it and "passporting" it through.
We caught up with Karl a few months after the
name change and the opening of the new
Training Academy.
When was the switch over from Defence
Security to Securenett?
On January 1st we rebranded for a fresh start
with a big emphasis on training because Ray
and myself have a real passion for educating the
industry. Our thinking is that if we can get
people to come here as a 'blank canvas' then we
can help develop apprentices through the ranks
and throughout their career. We have a great
facility in the Training Academy ready to train
people on any kind of panel, CCTV, access
system, fire.
Is the idea to train Securenett staff
only?
We will certainly train internal people as we
have a policy of developing from within and we
want to have everyone up to a specific level both
field- and office-based as this pays dividends for
our customers. Moving forward we will get in
touch with Job Centres, schools and colleges to
get people in from those routes.
Eventually we want to go down the route of
promoting the Training Academy to any
midlands-based installer so that they can come
here for training. As a member of the ECA we will
hope to attract other members and installers so
that they come here and train on equipment
from our supply partners. Also we want our
partners to use the Training Academy for any
meetings or presentations; for example we
recently hosted a session with Avigilon when
they had a UK sales meeting in the Training
Academy. We think this would be of real benefit
to partners and if they want to bring other
people in as well that is ideal.
Do your supply partners also provide the
kit for training?
Yes they do and some of it is brand new too. At
the Avigilon meeting recently they launched a
few new incentives and products and it was
good for us to meet the teams from across the
country and discuss new technology and trends
with them.
How are you pitching the differing
requirements of the training?
We need to cover, as a basic, PD6662 for
intruder and hold-up alarm system installation
as we have a large domestic portfolio and a
number of commercial customers in the centre
of the UK. We want our people to have a good
knowledge base from the operations and
telesales side of things so that they will be able
to answer customers' questions relatively easily.
The training of the engineers goes much more
Karl Northall
“Our thinking is that if
we can get people to
come here as a 'blank
canvas' then we can help
develop apprentices
through the ranks and
throughout their career”
INTERVIEW
(continued from previous page)
“When you talk to the majority of the industry these
days about security and fire service and install
engineers, most people will tell you that there is a
shortage of quality engineers so the only step you
can take is to develop new recruits”
in-depth and that is under the control of Ray
along with James Haigh who is the Combined
Services Delivery Manager, running all of the
engineers in the field. James is particularly keen
to get all of his team as highly skilled as
possible. In the last six months, for example, we
have put all of the engineers through the NSI BS
5839 course for designing a basic fire detection
and alarm system. We want to offer use the
facility for running courses where companies are
looking for a midlands venue.
What about older technology such as
analogue - will you look at that?
There is still very much a market for analogue
security systems so we are actively looking to
get service contracts for those systems for when
they come to be replaced and so we can bring
people up to speed with new technology. This
might be through any of our partners, be it
Avigilon or DVS for Hikvision which allows us to
cater for all types of surveillance systems and
applications.
Are the people you train up from scratch
going to be the first choice for jobs at
Securenett?
It depends what we are looking for at the time.
Obviously like any business we need a good mix
of personnel, some highly skilled and also new
blood. When you talk to the majority of the
industry these days about security and fire
service and install engineers, most people will
tell you that there is a shortage of quality
engineers so the only step you can take is to
develop new recruits. It's like the
apprenticeships we all remember from the past;
taking someone on to learn the basics and
incorporating college work and field based
training. Having our own training academy will
give us a real advantage.
Can you really teach an old dog new
tricks?
The industry today is prescriptive, where we all
have to stay within NSI and EN guidelines and
you have to adapt to the changing commercial
and economic landscapes. The people who don't
adapt really do not have a future. Technology is
moving at such a fast rate, which is really
exciting, and the capabilities of some of the
systems we see from partners is amazing, but if
you just carry on doing things the same way you
always have, with no awareness of what the new
generation cameras and panels can do, then you
won't last too long in business. We've got great
support from partners to ensure that we can get
our own people up to a level where we want
them and we're also in a position to help other
companies achieve the same results, so that
we've all got a bright future.
PREMIER AWARDS 2017
NOW IT’S TIME TO VOTE!
Over the last two months we asked PSi
readers to tell us which products were
worthy of recognition as the best that the
industry has to offer. Features, benefits, ease of
installation and best service are all factors in the
reasons why the following entries were
sequrinet
NOW FEATURING
Enhanced Password Control
Pa55w0rd!
ADMIN
1234
Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available
on the market today.
Installers will have the option of Enhanced Password Control (EPC). This will prohibit the use of ‘1234’ and other
easily infiltrated passwords and only allow the use of passwords upon selection, the EPC will remove any
backdoor user capability and will disable P2P and DDNS options by default.
Videcon understand that certain installations will not require such a high level of security; therefore, EPC is purely
optional. Compatibility to organisations requiring a stringent level of password protection is essential and it is this
compatibility that undoubtedly makes the Concept Pro recording devices the most secure in the market
suitable for use in government, public space and banks to name but a few.
Enhanced Password Control, easy interoperability and the potential for use in a varying array of situations
ensure that Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available on the market today.
Secure Eurpean Servers & P2P
P2P networking makes it simple for installers to configure mobile viewing of the Concept Pro
Recorders on smartphones and tablets. Installers simply activate mobile viewing by
scanning the QR code on the unit into the Concept Pro app (available for Android and iOS
devices free of charge) connecting through the server straight to the NVR.
ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE
• Tell us a little about your career to date
I spent the majority of my career with Honeywell,
which I initially joined in 2000. Working extensively
within distribution with ADI, a Honeywell company, I
eventually rose to the position of Europe & Africa
Sales Leader at Honeywell Security – a position I held
for over three years.
My career has provided me with a great deal of
insight into the supply chain and the specific needs
of end users, consultants and systems integrators.
It’s this experience that has given me an excellent
level of commercial awareness and understanding,
and I’m looking forward to using these attributes at
Milestone Systems.
• What do you see as Milestone Systems’
strengths in the UK and Ireland?
We are enablers. The foundation of our video
management software is open platform technology.
This enables our partners to design perfect solutions
that are both highly adaptable and futureproof. At the
same time Milestone’s platform approach enables
market leading performance and brings down the cost
of the total solution through substantial savings on
hardware.
The other enabling component is the Milestone
community. We are constantly working to help our
partners to design better and more secure video
business and security solutions.
These concepts are proven in more than 150,000
installations worldwide. Our technology helps make
the world see threats, challenges, opportunities or
efficiencies.
With an objective to improve organisational
processes, our XProtect, Milestone Husky high
performance NVRs & Access Control integrations are
compatible with more than 6,000 encoders, IP
cameras and digital video recorders (DVRs) from
almost 150 different suppliers and we are
continuously working to increase our compatibility
with new devices.
• What will be your focus as UK and Ireland
Country Manager over the next 2-5 years?
Although we have an enviable reputation for technical
excellence, I’m on board to increase our presence and
visibility by building a team that can fully support our
valued partners. My career has provided me with a
great deal of insight into the supply chain and the
specific needs of end users, consultants and systems
integrators, and I’m looking forward to using these
attributes at Milestone Systems.
By working closely with our partners, we can assist
them with maximising the benefits of our technology.
We want to help systems integrators develop new
revenue streams and add value to their customers’
investments in hardware and VMS. This offers an
opportunity to differentiate themselves from their
competitors and forge better and stronger
relationships with existing customers.
• Where are Milestone’s biggest opportunities
for growth in the UK?
Although it is still incredibly important to us, our key
challenge is to achieve a broader footprint in other
areas beyond traditional security. That’s why we are
spreading our messages about our open platform VMS
to IT, marketing and finance departments in a variety
of vertical sectors.
By strengthening Milestone Systems’ product value
propositions, we will spearhead adoption of our
technology and implement strategic initiatives that
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Looking to the future
Neil Killick is Milestone Systems’ newly appointed Country
Manager for the UK and Ireland and he assesses the state of
the security industry, his company’s plans for the years ahead
- and why an open platform and vibrant partner community
are vital for being on top of market needs.
guarantee internal and external scalability. This will
provide better value to our community of partners
through improved account management and project
support, and we will utilise all areas of the value chain
to gain greater visibility throughout the UK and Ireland.
This objective includes utilising VMS for
applications such as access control. VMS can help to
control external threats, while authorised personnel
can even be granted or denied access to certain areas
at different times, making it not only good for security
but also, in some environments such as hospitals, for
health and safety. Let’s not forget theft either, where it
is possible to pinpoint exactly who was in specific
areas of the building and at what time.
• How do you expect Video Management
Systems and security systems to change over
the next few years?
VMS is a rapidly growing market and demanding new
networked video applications require seamless
throughput, which includes not only live monitoring of
video, but also recording of video for later review - as
well as live analytics for monitoring doors, areas and
any other location of interest.
Although the technology is constantly changing,
the one constant is networked video (IP), which is why
security is now a key focus area of IT departments.
Furthermore, other departments are now using VMS,
such as marketing, which is utilising it to analyse
purchasing behaviour and, in the case of retail,
optimise store design and layout. As a result, it is more
important than ever to offer a true open platform.
You certainly can’t stand still in this industry, so it
is vital for systems integrators to stay up to date and
partner with a vendor that can assist on the journey of
constant change.
• What can visitors to the Milestone Systems
stand at IFSEC International 2017 expect to
PSI PREMIER AWARDS
The PSI Premier Awards Dinner
This year’s Awards Dinner will follow the annual
PSI Golf Day being held at the Luton Hoo Hotel,
Golf & Spa in Bedfordshire. Guest speaker for
the event will be former footballer Ray Parlour.
Ray Parlour spent 14
years at Highbury.
He made 468
appearances in all,
winning two FA Cups, the
League Cup, three league
titles and two FA Cups
(scoring against Chelsea
in 2002). He also played
in the Champions League
and earned 10 caps for
England.
Dubbed the 'Romford
Pele,' Ray broke into
George Graham's Arsenal
side and quickly built a
reputation as an
industrious player,
improving match by match. When Arsene Wenger arrived he
flourished. With his footballing brain, skill and tackling ability he
gave the midfield a quality balance - playing alongside the likes of
Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp.
Ray left on a high note shortly after Wenger's 'Invincibles' had
completed an unbeaten title campaign. He signed for
Middlesbrough, then Hull City, before moving swiftly into the
media. A natural communicator and storyteller, he hosts a show on
talkSPORT as well as contributing to other outlets both at home
and abroad.
Ray is a genuine and immensely likeable man, with a treasure
PANEL
The risk assessment risks
How can installers ensure that the
risk assessments they carry out
are appropriate and will lead to
the optimum system being
installed for the application? What
should those approaching new
contracts or taking over existing
sites keep in mind?
At the NSI Summit in March, Graeme Dow of
Safeguard Security Consultants gave a
presentation on the Hatton Garden heist
and called into question the efficacy of the risk
assessment that had been carried out by the
installer for that job. While this case itself bears
no reflection on the performance of the nation’s
installers it does raise the question of how do
you know when a risk assessment is adequate?
The PSI Panel is in session...
Simon Banks - CSL
There have been many recent
examples of risk assessments
going wrong. Fires raging
through Victorian Piers and
smouldering stately homes
attract media attention as
losses run to tens of millions.
Climate change has kept Insurance companies
distracted for the last 15 years as flooding takes
the top spot from fire and theft. Burglary tends
to drip feed but values are still huge when
totted up and occasionally the odd robbery
sensation like the Hatton Garden heist steals
the show. Climate aside, the Installer invariably
takes the blame, carries the cost and in the
most extreme cases, stops trading. Installers
have a duty to ensure the grade matches the
risk and although Insurance companies may not
specify as prolifically today, they will not pay out
(or negotiate the claim down) if they believe the
Installer has compromised on the risk profile.
Competitive price pressure can encourage
shortcuts but it's rarely negligence on the
security surveyor’s part.
As an industry we all have a responsibility to
move the sector to best practice first. This starts
when innovation replaces outdated technology,
notably for the lower end of the market where
40 year old electronic products need to keep
pace with criminal behaviour and tech
progression. Professionally monitored systems
need to be constantly on the front foot, ensuring
www.psimagazine.co.uk
that EN Grade 4 systems once again become the
default prescription for higher risk sites. It
shouldn't take a hard sell to provide premises
with the very best security. And, whilst doing the
right thing, security companies will enjoy a
significant value boost and increase the
robustness of their business model with solid
income streams.
Tim Cocks - Evolution
With an estimated 5 million
cameras in the UK (many of
them redundant, ineffective
and end of life) it is critical
that CCTV and other security
systems are regularly
maintained and upgraded to
remain relevant and effective, and to benefit
from the enormous technical advances seen in
the last 10 years. When you think of cars, even
the best maintained vehicles are regularly
replaced for a reason, to meet new regulations
or benefit from advances in technology. Perhaps
security systems are not so different?
Security system owners, who want to keep
their system relevant and effective, should set
up a maintenance contract with a reputable (NSI
Gold) company. They should determine periodic
upgrade plans in collaboration with that
company such that systems are replaced before
they become non-effective, non-compliant and
out-of-date, or leave your site exposed. In doing
so they can ensure optimum system
performance at all times.
Based on Evolution’s experience of taking
over or starting to work on multi-site security
(continued over)
“Burglary tends to
drip feed but values
are still huge when
totted up and
occasionally the odd
robbery sensation like
the Hatton Garden
heist steals the show”
PANEL
“The site survey
should be followed up
with site maintenance
quotations and defect
reports to identify the
critical elements that
need attention”
40
(from previous page)
systems maintenance contracts, we know the
importance of carrying out a thorough risk
assessment and site survey from the outset,
taking into account the necessary regulatory
and contractual framework. The site survey
should be followed up with site maintenance
quotations and defect reports to identify the
critical elements that need attention (i.e. for
systems that may already be installed), taking
into account the system type, size, age and
condition.
We know that most organisations have
complex surveillance needs which are largely
beyond the capabilities of many older systems,
which aren’t equipped to deal with the security
threats of today. Once the planned maintenance
regime is underway, systems will need to be
reviewed against the operational requirements
and current regulatory standards and
guidelines. The subsequent upgrade proposals
will focus on bringing benefits from new
technological innovations, making the
installation more effective whilst also making
systems easier to use. Any upgrade plans have
to be pragmatic, however, making maximum use
of existing infrastructure where possible to
control costs.
Steve Martin - FSA
Ensuring that a security risk
assessment is fit for purpose
depends on how
comprehensive the
information gathering has
been executed during the
survey and design stage. The
all important questions and answers associated
with ‘why, when, how?’ shouldn’t be lost due to
the method of communication and if these
elements are reviewed with an expert - face to
face contact would be the preferred method.
When it comes to the survey be open
minded. Often the mistake is approaching it
solely on the basis of an intruder alarm survey
without any consideration of integrating other
technologies. Presented with a large property
with a long drive - rather than having a blanket
Grade 3 system likely specified by the insurer,
this situation would surly benefit from having a
door entry system on the gates, a small amount
of CCTV and a Grade 2 system offering a
deterrent, an acceptable level of protection, and
would assist in securing a prosecution.
Be completely open and honest when
proposing your scheme to your client and
ensure they are clear it is based on information
made available during the initial survey. In
addition, encourage them to consult with other
interested parties such as insurers, landlords,
building control, crime prevention officers etc.,
and then feedback any views to ensure the final
scheme is met with broad approval.
Beware of any ‘it’s too expensive’ claim from
the client, as inevitably many will later claim
‘well you’re the expert’ if the watered down
system is not later met with approval. Make
sure the onus sits with the client through
written communication and referring back to
your initial scheme as the appropriate one for
the building.
It’s worth noting that absolutely anyone that
enters a building could gain some inside
knowledge of where security components are
positioned and could covertly pass this onto
scrupulous criminals – so bear this in mind
when making your risk assessment.
Gerard Cooper -
Allcooper and Gerard
Cooper Security
Consulting
As they say ‘knowledge is
power’ and gaining knowledge
is key to creating effective
systems. Nowadays, we see a
more consultative approach to security which
reaps rewards and avoids errors but, as we
know, only an experienced individual knows the
right questions to ask. So ensuring the right
person asks the right questions is what can
make the difference. A few tips therefore:
1) Choose the right team: When you know the
brief ensure you send the right people to
discuss the project with the client.
2) Have a checklist: Create a checklist so a
proper risk assessment process can be
followed.
Note: A risk can be identified as an
opportunity for an intruder to make a gain
www.psimagazine.co.uk

unlawfully. Risks can be procedural, staff
related, derived from poor physical security,
poor electronic security or a poor security
culture.
3) Take time (don’t rush): A correct risk
assessment will identify the dangers to
individuals, properties, buildings, business
interruption and loss of valuables.
4) Dig deeper: Once the installer has
understood the usual threats, then dig deeper.
Often we find this uncovers other big concerns.
5) Insurance needs: The client may also have
be an insurance request for added following an
intrusion, change in policy, or insurers risk has
changed.
6) Maximise your own market knowledge: It
is vitally important to maintain your knowledge
ensure you now the market standards, products
and systems available when asking questions of
a customer. The more you know the more you
can talk through risks in specific areas.
An installer has a duty to keep up to date
with and to maintain his continual professional
development.
And most importantly:
7) Make life difficult for an intruder: Once the
risks to our client have been identified, it is our
job is to design a security system that makes
life as difficult as possible for an intruder!
Stephen D Green -
Gourdiehill
Associates
The trite, simplistic answer is
that one must ensure that the
solution proposed matches
the needs. However, nobody
sets out to design a system
knowingly to fail. Security professionals believe
genuinely that they can meet the operational
requirements in every instance, but anecdotal
evidence suggests otherwise. Why is this?
The key is that those same professionals,
with a modicum of humility, need to accept that
they are not experts in other people’s business.
They do not hold all the answers, and cannot
know what they do not know. It is essential that
the design of any security solution is based on a
thorough understanding of the operational
environment, the business and social processes
taking place there and the challenges being
faced. This requires a collaborative, team-based
approach to client engagement. Only then can a
logical methodology be applied through which
critical assets and threats may be identified and
characterised correctly, and the resultant risks
quantified and prioritised to allocate resources
to best effect.
Whether designing the security response for
new or existing facilities, or for technical or
www.psimagazine.co.uk
manned solutions, a failure to understand enduser
processes and to engage in a thorough,
multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder risk
assessment process is the easiest way to ensure
that the solution will disappoint. For this reason,
I am a great fan of the five-step Security
Vulnerability Assessment process, first
developed by the petrochemical industry but
equally applicable in any theatre of operation.
The second easiest way to fail is to try to
design a solution without accurate data upon
which to base decisions. Without measuring the
situation before implementing a new design, it
is impossible to say with any certainty that the
resultant changes have been cost-effective. In
these days of austerity, security must
demonstrate fiscal responsibility as does any
other corporate department or public entity.
Joel Babb - Farsight
Security Services
We, as security professionals,
hold a responsibility to ask
questions to ultimately gain
the trust of our customers. We
need to ensure we are
deploying solutions that are
right for each client’s unique needs.
Security professionals must be self-critical
and ask: is this installation offering a solution or
is it a box ticking exercise? If it is the former
installers can be confident they are meeting
their customer’s needs. It is likely they will have
consulted everything: risk; value; benefit;
technological fit; environmental factors;
budgets; management, and much more.
A scattergun approach must be avoided.
There’s not a one-size fits all in security but it
can be tempting to recommend a system that
requires a high quantity of equipment offering a
high margin. Is that really a well thought out
and consultative approach, that offers the
customer a valuable solution and good service?
There is nothing wrong with asking potential
customers: “what is the value of the goods
behind that closed door?” Without the answer,
it’s impossible to provide the right solution to
protect a site – and the belongings that might
be behind said door.
Every new opportunity is an opportunity for
our combined industries to shine in our ability
to create robust, technically amazing solutions.
We have the technology: dark fighter
cameras; cutting-edge analytics; world class
PIRs; amazingly strong low voltage magnetic
locks, and the loudest sirens in the world. Put
together right, and considering from the very
start the customer’s needs, there is no reason at
all why we can’t deter or even catch a crook in
the act of theft, trespass or vandalism.
Security professionals
requirements in every
instance, but
anecdotal evidence
PANEL
“It’s always a good
idea to understand
that the existing kit
may not actually meet
the user’s
expectations so it is
important they fully
understand the
limitations of their
system prior to you
taking on someone
else’s mistake”
(from previous page)
It costs a fortune to generate one new
customer, compared to retaining an existing
one. Why would we waste the money, or why
would they? A robust solution will mean
customer satisfaction, which in turn means
customer loyalty.
David Davies - DVS
We should always carry out
risk assessments that engage
with the end user, they are
critical to providing the correct
system type along with any
packages that need to support
the system. In order to achieve
this, it is vital that you engage directly with the
user to ask them their requirements, how their
business works, operating environments,
lighting and site conditions to fully understand
what solution they require. Once you have
gathered this information, it is often useful to
summarise and repeat back your understanding
of what they have set out to remove any
misunderstandings and both parties have the
same expectations of the system requirements.
My approach for both new contracts and
taking over existing sites would be the same,
being an intruder system, CCTV, access control
or a combination of all providing a complete
solution. The solution needs to work for the
user.
The customer may benefit from additional
services that may include remote monitored
intruder and CCTV so that any alarm activation
can be then backed up with live / event CCTV
footage which enables the ARC to further this
with police action. It may be that using audio
deterrent on the site would be enough to
prevent further action with a local key holding
company also attending to ensure the premises
is still secure and safe.
It’s always a good idea to understand that
the existing kit may not actually meet the user’s
expectations so it is important they fully
understand the limitations of their system prior
to you taking on someone else’s mistake.
Graeme Dow -
Safeguard Security
Consultants
There are several lessons to
be learnt from the Hatton
Garden burglary during Easter
2015 - it does not seem like
two years ago.
The gang of ten reportedly spent around
three years planning the heist. To be successful
they needed to check the front door access, rear
gate access, lobby access, lift shaft access, lift
motor operation, the details of the intruder
alarm system including the siting of all relevant
detectors, the siting of the control panel, how to
neutralise self-activating sounders, the siting of
the CCTV cameras and recorder, the type of
remote signalling, the thickness and type of
construction of the vault wall, the type of drill
(Hilti DD350)needed to breach this wall, and
how to operate it – it has to be bolted to the
wall and water lubricated. They also needed to
know where to steal one as buying one
themselves might well give them away at some
point.
Against that an intruder alarm company
would have done its own risk survey. How long
would that take? Not nearly long enough based
on the system I examined. There were serious
flaws and the intruders were clearly aware of
them and exploited them. As this was a
takeover did the new maintainer rely on the
system being fit for purpose without doing his
own risk assessment? Was this acceptable
bearing in mind the time the system had been
installed?
And equally importantly did either company
think hard about the analysis of experienced
intruders at BS EN 50131 Grade 3 level. Should
this have been a Grade 4 even – it was after all
safe deposit vault with high value/low
volume/weight jewellery and gold. And the
signalling? Was anything less than Grade 4
going to be acceptable? From all I saw in my two
day post loss investigation inside the vault was
that the ingenuity of the intruders was vastly
under-estimated. Intruders were way ahead of
the game. As a forensic expert witness burglary
investigator for over 20 years I have rarely seen
any that did not show signs of insider
knowledge. Unless installers realise how
thorough and resourceful intruders are – and
install systems to take that into account –
intruders will take advantage.
On a happier note, the gang (minus “Basil”)
were caught fairly quickly, but that was due
solely to excellent police detective work. Also, I
only get to investigate the successful
intrusions, so in no way is this intended as a
criticism of alarm installers generally. Rather it
is intended as an insight on the real task facing
the industry today.
“Unless installers realise how
thorough and resourceful intruders
that into account – intruders will
PROMOTION
One panel suits all!
he brand-new panel from Pyronix combines
Tall the best features of the Enforcer 32WE
and Enforcer HomeControl+ panels. The
Enforcer V10 changes the game, with the same
simple and much-loved programming menus
and the same superior range of Pyronix
peripherals. The Enforcer V10 is the only choice
to make.
PSI caught up with Laurence Kenny,
Marketing Manager at Pyronix to find out more
about the new panel.
What’s new with the V10?
There are a number of features that the new
panel brings for the installer and end user.
These include:
Wi-Fi as standard - When you purchase a
brand-new Enforcer V10 control panel (software
version 10 and above), it comes supplied with a
DIGI-WIFI module for free as standard (all other
communication options, including PSTN (DIGI-
1200) are sold separately).
“Having Wi-Fi means you can immediately
benefit from PyronixCloud and HomeControl+
connectivity, which helps you save money, retain
customers, generate recurring revenue streams,
deliver quick and easy upsell advantages and
increase your efficiency and profitability,”
explains Laurence.
Communication is key - Instead of having to
choose from either the Enforcer 32WE or the
Enforcer HomeControl+ panels, now you only
need to pick the Enforcer V10.
“Rather than having to choose the panel
based on the communication capability, the new
panel can be fitted with any communication
option,” says Laurence. “If users change their
minds, or the network signalling or internet
capability of an area changes, you can simply
switch the Enforcer V10 to another
communication method and it’s ready to go! It
even updates its own programming menu to
suit.”
Voice commands on demand - Purchase the
Enforcer Voice communicator and with the
Enforcer V10, voice messages can be sent and
received from the control panel to and from a
landline or mobile telephone number. This is
ideal for users who don’t own smart phones or
simply prefer clear and straightforward voice
commands over apps or text messaging.
Faster - Utilising IP and all the fantastic benefits
it provides also includes much faster connection
speeds for UDL remote maintenance with the
new Enforcer V10.
Easiest ARC connection - “If you opt to
purchase the DigiAir Connected WiFi module
from CSL DualCom, you can also benefit from
providing the easiest connection to the local
Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) for the security
system, for dependable key holding services,”
reveals Laurence.
Simple ordering - “Simplifying and improving
the installation capabilities and upsell
opportunities of the Enforcer control panel
wasn’t enough, we have also
simplified the ordering too!”
reveals Laurence. “As the
Enforcer V10 is the only panel
you need to buy, we’ve
also streamlined the
kits you have to
remember. The same
great security, function
and usability, with less
confusion over which
kit is ideal for the
installation.”
The easiest choice
you'll ever have to
make, the Enforcer
V10...
“Rather than having
to choose the panel
based on the
communication
capability, the new
panel can be fitted
with any
communication
option”
Why make changes to IP and Wi-Fi?
“In the digital world PSTN is becoming an outdated method of communication,
where smart devices, IP and applications are king,” says Laurence Kenny. “Most
industries moved to IP communications long ago and as technology develops,
there is more and more emphasis towards smart apps and push notifications,
particularly as telecommunication companies around the world move further
away from legacy services such as PSTN connections… the home phone will
soon be a thing of the past.
“PSTN and traditional phone lines continue to develop issues since the move
to digital, while IP communications and push notifications with smart
apps go from strength to strength. The Enforcer V10 recognises this
and delivers a completely future-proof solution.”
Improving access control at UK
Asda sites
CBES has installed IP access control systems
from ACT at Asda stores and distribution centres
across the UK. The roll-out has already covered
500 sites all of which are networked to Asda’s
corporate headquarters in Leeds utilising ACTpro
4000 two-door controllers which can extend to
16 doors via ACTpro door stations.
The Asda sites are using ACT’s software
platform, ACTpro Enterprise, which distinguishes
between different user types such as installer,
security guard or system administrator so as to
factor out accidental system changes and
minimise maintenance. ACTpro Enterprise gives
users a familiar web-browser experience using
hyperlinks, ‘backwards’ and ‘forwards’ buttons
and search functionality.
Typically, an Asda staff member might present
their MIFARE contactless smart card to a reader
in order to access a secure area of the site. The
ACT software then grants or denies access
according to the user’s privileges which can be
defined according to seniority, job profile, time of
day and day of the week.
Asda managers are benefiting from
integration of access control with CCTV and
intercoms through use of the Sky-Walker
Integration Platform from Belgian developer
Entelec which manages disparate data types to
provide a PSIM system. At a large site such as a
distribution centre, a staff member seeking an
access privilege outside their user profile in
terms of location or time of day might identify
themselves through intercom and receive
instructions. Similarly, the Entelec software can
trigger CCTV recording in an unusual situation.
Rob Cox of CBES, said: “The main benefits for
Asda are central monitoring from headquarters
and integration of access control with CCTV and
any other IP-enabled building management
system in use at the stores. Crucially, the ACT
software has allowed uniformity by being able to
function with Asda’s existing smart cards. This has
produced both financial and time savings in terms
of the intrinsic value of the cards themselves and
the avoidance of any re-keying of data.”
New fire safety system for
Specsavers facility
Kentec gas extinguishing fire safety panels are
playing an important role helping protecting
Specsavers’ new £12 million West Midland
manufacturing and distribution centre.
The fire safety system, designed and installed by
Leader Systems comprises Kentec K11031 M2 Sigma
XT automatic three-zone extinguishant control
panels with Apollo conventional Series 65 devices
plus conventional sounder/beacons and bells from
Klaxon Signals.
The new Specsavers’ facility at Kidderminster,
Worcestershire will combine the company’s existing
operations in the area, and will allow the company
to double capacity with room to grow in the future.
As part of the firm’s existing Kidderminster
operations, Specsavers’ International Glazing
Services business glazes customers’ frames with
prescription lenses for stores in Northern European
countries. The Lens Online business stocks and
distributes lenses and contact lenses to stores in
the UK and Ireland.
Kentec’s Sigma XT features three detection zones
as standard, where any zone or any combination of
zones can be configured to release the extinguishant
gas and allows delay in first stage sounder and
detection to be configured, with an instant release
facility by using the manual release option.
Uxbridge College passes its
security test
An integrated access control and CCTV solution is
playing a key role in managing the safety and
security of students, staff and visitors to Uxbridge
College across both of its campuses in Uxbridge
and Hayes.
The challenge presented to Evolution was in
servicing, maintaining and upgrading a system
that protects the 4,000 students and 600 staff,
while taking into account the College’s ongoing
growth ambitions and constantly changing
infrastructure.
Evolution is now supporting an IP-based
system with card access, turnstiles and proximity
readers to control the movement of card holders
New fire system protects
high-tech workplace
A Star Wars themed cinema, a library that has a
secret passage in the bookcase, Rolling Stones
themed bathrooms and TVs and Apple iPads in
every room are just some of the features of
money.co.uk’s new headquarters. Located in a
10,000ft² Grade II listed Victorian castle on the
Bathurst Estate in Cirencester, the building
provides a unique workplace setting and the
interior, designed by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.
APE Fire & Security was asked by the main
contractor for the project, Interaction, to design,
specify, install and commission a fire detection
across the two sites, as well as a network of CCTV
cameras to monitor those seeking unauthorised
access and provide a further layer of security.
Michael Mcdonagh, Head of Security at
Uxbridge College, says that students are each
issued with their own photo ID pass: “Should a
student forget their pass, we can immediately
issue a replacement,” he explains. “However, in
maintaining full control, the student’s ‘forgotten’
or ‘lost’ pass is automatically de-activated. Each
card also has the shelf life of a student’s course
length – so it automatically expires when they
finish for the year. Should a user attempt to gain
access with a de-activated card, we are
immediately notified.”
Each of the passes provided is tailored to take
into account a student’s studies and lifestyle. It
can control, therefore, which ‘zones’ that student
can enter, identify whether or not a student has a
pre-paid car parking permit, and even enable
access to extra-curricular activities such as sport
or drama.
In total, there are more than 120 controlledentry
doors and 80 CCTV cameras, which control
room operators can use to pinpoint and track
unauthorised access.
Both campuses are integrated under the single
system, which also includes an intruder detection
solution. Alarms can be set/un-set remotely, and
operators are alerted to the status of each panel
to ensure there are no gaps in security.
“False alarms are virtually a thing of the past,”
adds Michael.
system that could protect offer staff and visitors.
The Notifier by Honeywell Pearl networkable
fire detection control panel is linked with Opal
photoelectric smoke detectors. In the kitchen
areas, SMART3 detectors are used, which
utilise optical smoke sensing in conjunction
with heat sensors, infrared flame sensing
technology and alarm algorithms to offer a fast
response to flaming fires while providing
unwanted alarm immunity.
Via cause and effect programming, APE Fire &
Security was able to integrate the Pearl control
panel with the existing intruder and access
control system.
Peter Leonard Director at APE Fire & Security
said: “For a building like this it is vital to maintain
its fire safety and intrusion integrity, and that
means making sure that doors and access points
are closed when they should be. Now, if doors are
propped open, certain areas are alerted through
the fire detection sounders using an alternative
tone, which is programmed through the Pearl
panel. Occupants can then take action.”
Joe Francis, Head of SEO at money.co.uk,
concludes, “While it’s the style and décor of
the castle that catches the eye, we also value
the technology that is in place to protect us.
By using Notifier’s products, APE Fire &
Security has complemented the aesthetics of
the building.”
RNLI utilising network cameras
for live streaming of high risk
areas
Porthcawl’s RNLI station aims to improve
education and safety around the water with the
implementation of surveillance technology from
Swansea-based PC1 and Axis Communications.
With high tourism levels and fast-shifting tides,
the installation at Porthcawl pier provides an
online live stream of conditions. This ensures
visitors are prepared for the conditions they will
face, minimising the necessity of lifeboat
launches and significantly reducing overall costs.
By further educating the public and reducing
the number of visitors during dangerous periods,
the total cost of installation would be covered
through the prevention of only two launches –
ensuring the safety of both the crew and public.
The camera points directly at one of Porthcawl’s
highest risk areas – the pier. During storms and
rough weather conditions, visitors are in danger
of being swept out to sea by tides reaching up to
7 knots (8mph). The installation of the AXIS
Q1775-E Fixed Network Camera, combined with a
weather installation, ensures Porthcawl RNLI can
access weather metrics, tide activity, conditions
monitoring and more.
Ian Stroud, retired Deputy Launch Authority at
Porthcawl RNLI, states, “One of the most
significant tasks a lifeboat station must
undertake is observing sea conditions to make
judgements on the equipment lifeboat operators
will need. We wanted a view of the pier as it is
such an important landmark. This is viewable by
members of the public, who can alert the lifeboat
station if they see someone in distress.”
Speaking on the installation, Graham Thomas,
IT & Online Project Manager at PC1, states, “We
installed a weather station and connected the
installation to YouTube, allowing the public and
lifeboat staff to view real-time images and
accurate weather reports – including tide times.
The station will soon receive a superfast fibre
connection, allowing for a further upgrade of the
system to take full advantage of the camera’s HD
capabilities. We can then look at running an
additional camera; one looking at the pier and
another focusing on the coastal defence where
waves crash up to 300 feet in the air.”
STORAGE
Storing surveillance
n our digital age, the amount of data created
Ion a daily basis is growing at an alarming
rate. In the security market as we generate
increasing amounts of data from increasingly
higher resolution cameras the overall volume of
data and the secured storage of it is one of the
most important aspects of an installation.
Knowledge is power and the accumulation of
data from surveillance cameras today is not only
being used for security purposes; it’s not just a
case of keeping stored information for potential
scanning in the event of an incident. Cameras of
the 21st century are used for marketing and
business improvement as well.
The other aspect of modern life is that not
only does information need to be saved secured
but also stored for longer periods, which uses
up valuable space on a drive or in the cloud.
So where are we today with data storage in
the security industry and what are the options?
Drives for surveillance
According to IHS Markit, anticipated growth of
4K-compliant and high-resolution network
cameras over the next few years is driving
higher demand for surveillance-class storage to
support systems featuring these technologies.
Whatever the reasons for growth in the amount
of data being stored there are a number of
points that installers need to consider in
deciding on the most suitable solution for the
application.
In the case of surveillance information, the
main players in the drives market have spent
some time explaining how the use of standard
PC drives was causing problems for those
operating surveillance systems and, and a
result, installers should be looking towards
utilising drives designed for video data storage.
These, essentially, are more suited to the
read/write process of a video storage
installation than a drive aimed at being fitted
into a PC.
Surveillance drives are also designed to deal
with the growing use of analytics in the sector,
both for security management and business
information solutions.
In terms of the amount of data being
generated both WD and Seagate, the two main
players in the surveillance drive market both
offer a range of drives depending on the needs
of the installation, be it a corner shop or a smart
city. Both companies manufacture drives with
capacities up to a massive 10TB of storage,
essential for our always-on lifestyles.
Do we really need drives with such high
capacities? Writing a blog for Seagate last year
John Paulsen wrote: “Based on historical
camera shipments and the predicted lifespans
of these devices, it’s estimated approximately
210,000,000 video surveillance cameras are
A company’s data
brand and personnel
as the most important
factors of business
success. Here we
drives designed for
Relying on traditional
desktop drives for
video recording
surveillance is not
good enough as they
are not built to
withstand constant
data writing
52
(continued from previous page)
currently deployed in digital systems worldwide.
Let’s assume each of these cameras operates at
industry-standard resolution, quality and framerate
settings, recording 14 days’ worth of data.
Even at these typical settings, over 18.4 billion
gigabytes (GB) of storage is needed to support
the world’s surveillance cameras for a mere twoweek
recording period. The number of hard
drives needed to provide such storage capacity
would stretch across China twice if laid end-toend.”
So it certainly looks like we need more
space!
Looking at the data
It is critical the system makes it possible to
understand and translate data once it is created
and stored securely. Data analysis will not only
help in the shorter term with business efficiency
and operations, it will help companies stay
ahead of their competitors and make better
business decisions for the future. Due to this
reliability on the data the storage medium
chosen must be one that will not struggle to
cope with the processes involved. The latest
Seagate drives, Skyhawk, boast that it can
handle three times the workload of a desktop
drive, essential when recording up to 64
cameras while WD Purple units feature AllFrame
technology which reduces video interruptions,
especially in higher video stream count
environments where additional data is being
captured at an exponential rate.
As previously mentioned, the correct type of
drives store video data and allows that
information to be accessed for a variety of
purposes not only security. These tasks can
include understanding people’s movements
around a shop - where they look first, where
they spend the most time browsing, and the
busiest times of the day and week. As a result
better business decisions can be made - like the
best place to position strategically important
stock or items on promotion, or where security
team members should be placed to monitor any
vulnerable or theft-prone areas of the shop
floor.
This all sounds great, however, to ensure
companies have the right kit and tools in place
for video surveillance, it is essential they think
about the challenges it will bring in terms of
storage. Storage should be one of the first
things that businesses consider - especially as
more and more companies will want to analyse
data over longer periods of time.
Relying on traditional desktop drives for
video recording surveillance is not good enough
as they are not built to withstand the constant
data writing involved with capturing multiple
streams of high definition video. The rigours of
today’s video surveillance require true 24x7
operations, 365 days a year, and therefore
surveillance systems need drives that can
handle that level of workload effectively.
It has also become increasingly common for
data to be held in the Cloud and for these
remote servers to be used to allow customers to
access their CCTV footage via the platform while
on their travels. Some NVR solutions now offer
remote monitoring solutions via the use of
dedicated apps in addition to Cloud storage for
back-up.
However the data from cameras is stored and
accessed, the value of data is increasing as
quickly as the need to store it for longer, so
choosing the correct drive for the job is vital.
Relying on a standard PC drive in a surveillance
system might be cheaper option at install but
could be an expensive mistake. Furthermore,
given that the leading surveillance drives
consume less power and are backed by threeyear
warranties and in the case of Skyhawk units,
a data recovery service plan, it’s a no-brainer.
A company’s data ranks alongside its brand
and personnel as the most important factors of
business success, so why would anyone cut
corners when it comes to securing that vital
information?
IFSEC 2017
More than an exhibition!
Taking place in June, IFSEC International gives visitors
hands-on access to over 10,000 security solutions, product
demonstrations, and networking with over 27,000 security
professionals. There’s more to the event than exhibition
stands as we find out in the first part of our preview
According to the
figures from 2016,
48% of those who
attended the event
classed themselves as
end users with 52%
being made up of the
traditional IFSEC trade
overing every aspect of security, from
Caccess control and video surveillance to
smart buildings, cyber, border control and
so much more, visiting IFSEC International is
described by the organisers as the perfect way
to keep up to date, protect your business and
enhance your career in the security industry.
According to the figures from 2016, 48% of
those who attended the event classed
themselves as end users with 52% being made
up of the traditional IFSEC trade audience and
37% of visitors were from overseas. As a result
of this audience the event has evolved to reflect
emerging market trends and also to provide
more than simply a place to walk around
exhibition stands.
This year, for example, there will be four
seminar streams, each with a different
together raising standards
Meet the installer – Q&A
Every month we talk to an NSI Gold accredited installer about life in the business. This month we take
a look back at a selection of answers from previous editions concerning the value of accreditation
Mick James – MJ Security
Systems
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
you?
It is absolutely essential. When we started
M J Security Systems in 1985 becoming an
NSCIA (now NSI) approved installer was
our number one priority and crucial to our
long term business plan and objectives for
the market we wished to target. Insurance companies are
normally insistent upon it for commercial properties. It provides
our clients with the assurance that our installations adhere to
stringent industry standards. This is obviously necessary for the
commercial installations but for the domestic clients, who maybe
get confused with various quotations, this can be a clear
differentation and reassurance that they will not be abandoned
should the company cease to exist or trade.
Gerard Cooper – Allcooper
Is third party accreditation
beneficial to you?
Yes, accreditation is very important
to us and to our industry. Good
quality accreditations provides the
customer with an assurance that
the installer is being monitored.
The body can also act as a
mediator in a dispute. The
customer and the installer need to
have faith in that governing body.
We choose carefully who we want
to be associated with and it’s important for the accreditation
body to work hard for us too. The accreditation organisations
have a responsibility to act and be visible to protect the security
installer and the customer alike.
Mark Lee – Lifeline Alarm
Systems
Is third party accreditation
beneficial to you?
Essential! We were the first
company based on the Isle of
Wight to have both NSI Gold for
Security and Fire. Naturally fire
and security products are a grudge
purchase, but at long last we are
starting to see good quality
specifications requesting third
party accreditation. Admittedly these are mainly on the larger
installations, but at least it is happening. The bun fight is still at
the lower end of the market though up to £1000.00 or so. Why
should a customer have an ISO 9001 accredited company, with a
14001 environmental policy and 18001 Health & Safety policy? We
as installers have to slow the customer down and explain why.
David Collins – NG Bailey
Is third party accreditation beneficial
to you?
Absolutely critical. Until 2012, NG Bailey
subcontracted security installations,
while at the same time delivering
prestigious, highly complex IT
infrastructure projects. With the
proliferation of IP security solutions and
based on the quality of our IT services,
we and our customers saw the benefit of
NG Bailey as a single supplier for both IT and security.
Achieving NSI NACOSS Gold gave us the credibility to do just
that, plus it gives peace of mind and purchasing confidence to
existing customers as well as potential new ones.
John D’Aprano – DS Systems
Is third party accreditation
beneficial to you?
Yes, DS Systems has a variety of
accreditations ranging from
Safecontractor to SSAIB approval to
ISO: 9001 certification. This ensures
that we are up to date with current
health and safety and are constantly
monitoring our processes to ensure
that they are efficient. SSAIB in
particular, provides the customer
with confidence that we are able to
design, install and maintain security systems to recognised
standards.
Kenneth Kay – Fidelity
Integrated Systems
Is third party accreditation
beneficial to you?
We are very proud to have
achieved the highest
accreditations in our field with
accreditation bodies for security
and fire systems, including the
National Security Inspectorate,
BAFE and FIA. These enable us to
provide insurance accepted
certification and are a
requirement for a lot of the work
we tender for, especially schools and universities.
Achieving accreditation is a significant investment of our time
and money, but it confirms to clients that our team consistently
strive to achieve the highest standards and practices and
demonstrates our long-term commitment to the industry.
