Expatriatess with kids also appreciate easy access
to some international schools (especially the
German School of Nairobi) and Gertrude’s
Children’s Hospital.
Muthaiga and Gigiri are about 12 km from ABC
place where KPMG offices are located.
Runda and Ridgeways
If you prefer self-contained neighborhoods,
perhaps with a quasi-rural flair, you should
give Runda or Ridgeways a try. The former
includes the Runda Estate, Kenya’s largest gated
community, with top-notch security and a very
active residents’ association.
iii) Budget
Considering a budget before beginning your
search will allow you to better narrow it
down. Prices tend to vary greatly and not
having a specific price point in mind could
lead to confusion.
You may want a yard for your pets, a private
area or more rooms for family and friends.
Decide how much room you need in order
to effectively narrow down your options and
come up with a specific budget.
Ridgeways, on the other hand, is situated mostly
within the Karura Forest. Former home of Kenya’s
colonial elite, it now houses wealthy Kenyan
residents and well-paid diplomatic staff. Now as
then, its main attraction is the luxurious Windsor
Golf Club.
Runda and Ridgeways are about 18 km from ABC
place where KPMG offices are located.
Things to consider
i) Security
When looking for a place to stay it is important
to look for a place which provides ample
security for its residents. A gated community
or apartment building may provide better
security than a single house.
Ensure that the neighbourhood is guarded by a
reputable security company. The
Administration department is able to provide
more information on this.
ii) Location
Ensure that you do not live in a very isolated
location. It is important to be close to
amenities like shopping centres and
restaurants. Traffic in Nairobi is a prevalent
problem for commuters therefore proximity to
the office is also key. A few residential
locations to consider around ABC place, where
KPMG offices are located, are Lavington,
Westlands, Riverside, Mountain View and
Loresho Estates.
iv) Amenities
Water and electricity are important considerations
to have when choosing where to live
in Kenya. Some areas may be prone to power
cuts and water shortages. Check that the location
you move to has back up water tanks and
backup generators to ensure you do not miss
out on these important amenities.
v) Availability of transport
Ensure the place is easily accessible with
both public and private means of transport
House keeping services
For expatriates, it is recommended that they use a
reliable bureau to assist in recruiting reliable
nannies and housekeepers. Upon request, the
Administration department at KPMG can provide
you with contact details of reputable bureaus that
can provide suitable candidates for you to interview.
