Tips and tricks for shopping in Nairobi:
1. Keep some money in MPesa. It is important to
ensure that you do not carry large amounts of
money around. MPesa is the mobile innovation
that most Kenyans use to save money and make
payments. While many shops (especially open
air markets) do not
accept VISA payments, vendors are more than
willing to accept mobile money.
2. Negotiate. Be sure to negotiate whenever
possible. More often than not vendors will
expect you to negotiate and thus will quote a
price higher than the actual value of the item. It
is a skill that you will need to perfect so make
sure you practice.
3. Stay safe. Make sure you do not go anywhere
you do not feel safe and that you do not
stay out too late. Do no keep large amounts of
money on you especially in an open air
market.
4. Have fun. Enjoy the experience of shopping in
Kenya. It is a truly unique experience.
