Immigration Procedures<br />
While at KPMG in Kenya, you are likely to be assigned work in any one or more of the countries in<br />
the East African region; Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. In this section we will explore the<br />
different visas and permits you will need to work in these countries. We will also take a brief look<br />
at their different business cultures and work environments.<br />
Individuals working in Kenya require a special<br />
pass for assignments not exceeding 3 months<br />
or a work permit for long term assignments.<br />
Application for a special pass takes 1-3<br />
months. It is valid for 3 months and can be<br />
extended for a further 3 months.<br />

A work permit takes 3-5 months to process<br />
and is valid for 2 years.<br />
After receiving the Work permit/Special<br />
pass:<br />
Step 1: The Administration department applies<br />
for an alien card( this is the unique identity for<br />
any foreigner working in Kenya and contains a<br />
unique identification number) the alien card<br />
allows one to apply for a PIN(Personal<br />
Identification Number) for Pay As You Earn<br />
(PAYE) purposes.<br />
The Alien card requires about two-three<br />
months for processing.<br />
Step 2: Once Alien card is received the<br />
passport is stamped with the work permit re<br />
entry pass-This allows one to get in and out of<br />
the country without paying entry charges at the<br />
airport.<br />
Step 3: The firm applies for a Personal<br />
Identification Number (PIN) after receiving the<br />
Alien card. The PIN is like a Social Security card<br />
and is the unique number used for all PAYE and<br />
tax returns in Kenya.<br />
The PIN card is received after 2 days of<br />
application.<br />
NB: An individual’s pay can only be processed<br />
through the payroll once they have a valid PIN<br />
(Personal Identification Number) Without a PIN,<br />
the firm withholds PAYE and pays 70% of the<br />
salary.<br />
Rwanda<br />
<br />
A work permit is required to work in Rwanda<br />
and the application process takes one week.<br />
Uganda<br />
A special pass is issued for short stays up to 6<br />
months. It takes one week to process<br />
<br />
For work engagements longer than 6 months,<br />
individuals require a work permit which takes<br />
1 to 2 months to process. This permit is valid<br />
for 3 years.
