Immigration Procedures
While at KPMG in Kenya, you are likely to be assigned work in any one or more of the countries in
the East African region; Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. In this section we will explore the
different visas and permits you will need to work in these countries. We will also take a brief look
at their different business cultures and work environments.
Individuals working in Kenya require a special
pass for assignments not exceeding 3 months
or a work permit for long term assignments.
Application for a special pass takes 1-3
months. It is valid for 3 months and can be
extended for a further 3 months.

A work permit takes 3-5 months to process
and is valid for 2 years.
After receiving the Work permit/Special
pass:
Step 1: The Administration department applies
for an alien card( this is the unique identity for
any foreigner working in Kenya and contains a
unique identification number) the alien card
allows one to apply for a PIN(Personal
Identification Number) for Pay As You Earn
(PAYE) purposes.
The Alien card requires about two-three
months for processing.
Step 2: Once Alien card is received the
passport is stamped with the work permit re
entry pass-This allows one to get in and out of
the country without paying entry charges at the
airport.
Step 3: The firm applies for a Personal
Identification Number (PIN) after receiving the
Alien card. The PIN is like a Social Security card
and is the unique number used for all PAYE and
tax returns in Kenya.
The PIN card is received after 2 days of
application.
NB: An individual’s pay can only be processed
through the payroll once they have a valid PIN
(Personal Identification Number) Without a PIN,
the firm withholds PAYE and pays 70% of the
salary.
Rwanda

A work permit is required to work in Rwanda
and the application process takes one week.
Uganda
A special pass is issued for short stays up to 6
months. It takes one week to process

For work engagements longer than 6 months,
individuals require a work permit which takes
1 to 2 months to process. This permit is valid
for 3 years.
