Tsavo National Park
National parks and Reserves
Over the years Kenya has become almost
synonymous with the word ‘Safari’. It is
impossible to imagine visiting the country without
going on a game drive and observing wild animals
in their natural habitats. There is no better way to
do this than by visiting one or
all of Kenya’s National Parks and reserves. There
are so many beautiful game parks and reserves in
Kenya that visiting all of them can take years. To
start off one could start with the following beautiful
options.
Maasai Mara National
Reserve
Comprising 4% of the country’s total area, Tsavo is
Kenya’s largest National park and is divided into
Tsavo East and Tsavo West. It encompass rivers,
waterfalls, savannah, volcanic hills, a massive lavarock
plateau, and an impressive diversity of
wildlife. Tsavo East is famous for large elephant
herd sightings, include the Yatta Plateau, the
world’s longest lava flow, Mudanda Rock, and the
Lugard Falls, which spill into rapids and crocodilefilled
pools. Highlights
of Tsavo West are Mzima Springs, a series of
natural springs with large populations of hippos
and crocodiles, Chaimu Crater, a great spot for
spotting birds of prey, Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary and
its beautiful scenery.
Nairobi National Park
One of the world’s most magnificent game
reserves, Maasai Mara is the Northern extension of
the Serengeti and forms a wildlife corridor between
the Kenya and Tanzania. It is named
for the indigenous people, the Maasai, who have
lived in the area for centuries. This park is known
for the Great Migration where thousands of
wildebeest, zebra and Thomson gazelle cross to
and from the Serengeti from July through to
October. It is also home to large crocodile, hippo,
lion, and cheetah and leopard populations.
Visitors are sure to enjoy a great Safari in the
Maasai Mara.
Just a 10 minute drive from the Nairobi City
Centre, Nairobi National Park is likely the most
convenient National park to visit for a day. With
only a fence separating the park’s wildlife from the
metropolis, Nairobi’s skyscrapers can be seen
from the park. Despite its proximity to
the city and the relative small size of the park,
Nairobi National Park is home to a large and varied
wildlife population. Migrating wildebeest and zebra
gather in the park during the dry season, and it is
one of Kenya’s most successful rhinoceros
sanctuaries. The Nairobi National Park is also home
to The Safari Walk and The animal Orphanage.
