Celebrate festivals
Create your work place the best place for
cultural and regional harmony. Celebrate festival
of each team member in the manner in which
he celebrates it at home. Enjoy the depth and
diversity of India.
Enthuse people with your smile
You will use lesser facial muscles and create a highly
relaxed and enthused environment. What you give
to people will be passed on to others too.
Learn together
Drop your pretensions. You are not semi-God.
You have your limitations. Be willing to work on
them. Be active and ready to learn new things
from people around you. This will make them
grow in confidence and capability.
2
E
Extend yourself
Walk the extra mile when you do something
for people. Your intentions and actions will
always be watched. Whatever you sow, so
shall you reap.
B
Babies day out
Children are babies to their parents irrespective
of their age. Welcome the babies at work place.
Greet them and treat them. Send them their
pictures taken in the office. Don’t forget a frame
too.
R Reward with Bollywood and Hollywood breaks
Gift them movie tickets for self and family for good
performance or special personal occasions. Join
them, if possible. Add the pop-corn allowance too.
A Annual team pictures
Watch with fun the receding hairlines, the
glowing greys, the maturing skins etc. as the
time passes by. This annual feature can have a
great archive value too.
T
Thank you meets for families
Bring them together to say “Thank you”, share
flowers or some token gift for all the family time
they give surrender whenever the team member is
required to spend more than the needed time at
work place during any particular period. They will
respect you more for the care. They will also
understand the constraints.
I
Invite the team home
Your relationship will grow stronger at your own
place. Keep aside your designation. Be like them.
Serve them yourself. Involve your family. Keep
the fare simple. Visit them too, with your
family…
O Organize your own ‘laughter club’
All big cities now have some. Organize your own
club. Meet every day in the morning, afternoon or
evening. Ease out your tension with a loud burst of
laughter discharge. Laughter is a great infection to
spread for rejuvenation.
N Neutralize negativity
S
People have baggage-from-the-past, they get
upset for things intended or untended…The
gloom needs to be removed. Be on the look out.
Trash it sooner with your empathy and
influence.
Set up a budget for gifting happiness and
extending CELEBRATIONS
Give a nominal budget to your people to spend on
complimenting each other. Let them buy token gifts
or cards to convey their appreciation to others for
the good work done. Lead the way. Enjoy the
happiness coming your way. Find reasons to
celebrate.
The year you were born marks only your entry into the world. Other
years where you prove your worth, they are the ones worth celebrating.
Nothing
Serious…
#20 November 1, 2013
Dale Carnegie may turn in his grave today. The
trainers and motivators are going to shout. The
training managers may slam their doors on me. Let
them. You, the readers, won’t be able to deny that
creating, sustaining and nurturing negativity is a
matter of great scholarly initiative/intervention. Ask
anyone alone. Their wisdom may surpass my
amateurish paper scribbling.
The real anchor of negativity could be the brilliant
Boss. He is the champion of thriving on chaos. His
pursuit of self wow and his ever evolving circle of
innovation may push Tom Peters to hide behind his
covers. Forget about teaching the elephants to
dance. People in the organisation can do their tango
or break dance with even a single spark of
negativity. Organisational fireworks shine brighter
day in and day out. I some times wonder why
Diwali is celebrated only once in a year.
How often have you come across a newspaper with
only good, neat and clean news, views and stories?
Never. People like reading and complaining about
law and order problems, dirty politics etc. How
many movies have you seen without violence and
other socially forbidden ingredients? Hardly any.
Those who venture get bombed before the release.
OK, how many TV serials have you seen with clean
simple messages – direct as well as indirect. The
sponsors don’t pay money for them.

CELEBRATE NEGATIVITY
#20 November 1, 2013
News about negative events sell. Films about negative ingredients
celebrate jubilees and win awards. The public at large glue every day
to their TV with their mouth open while their hand waits with the
morsel. The negative scenes are so engrossing. Negativity is the top
form of entertainment. A great time pass for the masses. A profession
for the classes. Ask politicians in the corporate and national jungle.
Feeling inspired! Keep doing what you normally do. Some where
some time you may reflect it too. If you wish to upgrade your skills,
cross check whether you are doing what others do. Match up.
6
• Try to control/influence the decisions of the people under and
around you. Never seek inputs from them. You know better than
them. You are the big brother. Its your prerogative to watch them,
catch them and snatch the initiative out of them. It won’t look
brutal. Tuskers in India lose their ivory and life together. No one
bothers. You are only taking the shine of pride away from people.
They will live to sing the poems of your negativity.
• Work hours, pay benefits, assignment of overtime hours,
compensation and incentives, dress codes, office facilities, job
requirements, working conditions etc. offer numerous
opportunities for you to throw the spanner in the wheels. Every
day will provide you great opportunities to make the presence of
your power felt. This will benefit your people too. They will start
talking to each other more. Their interactivity will improve. Their
network will get better. Negativity grows in geometric progression
when the large groups start championing it.
• Transparency and consistency are dangerous for your
idiosyncrasies. How can everyone be the same? God never made
them. Why should you treat them all the same? You have the
right to reward the merit as per your yardsticks of evaluation. If
you treat people as adults, they will become more and more
assertive. Bad for you. Use aggression to push them into
submission. Let them understand that they need to please you to
get their rewards. This much of transparency should be OK.

CELEBRATE NEGATIVITY
#20 November 1, 2013
• Communication has its major problems in the
organisation. Don’t do it enough. Give people the
mushroom treatment. Keep them in the dark and feed
them sh#@. Managing by creating crisis is your
prerogative. Coping with and working inspite of
confusion is their duty. Don’t come in the way of their
duty.
• People want growth. They expect training. Give them.
Train the trainable. This will conserve resources. You
also owe good training holidays to your closest team
mates. Who will look after them if you do not? Groom
them thoroughly on following the leadership
programmes. Don’t worry about the have-nots. India is
full of them. They have no entity.
• Make a lot of noise about mission, vision, values and
goals. It’s a fashion these days. Be trendy. Make big
posters and display them in the work areas. I am not
asking you to believe in them. People like slogans,
phrases, charismatic jargons etc. to make a better
cocktail with negativity. Let them feel happy and
content. We all know the reality. Our lips do sing,
“Saare jahan se achcha hindustan hamara…”.
7
Negative people by default bring in a lot of positive
influence. They make a majority pass their time well. They
go back and talk to their families. They meet in the parties
and talk what happens in their offices. They bring smiles
on the faces of consultants, trainers and authors. Dr. Eric
Berne would not have written “Games people play” out of
thin air. You should know why Thomas Harris kept shouting
“I am OK, You are OK”. Excuse me Mr. Carnegie. The
inspirational words written in grave yards “Do one good
act a day” are passe’. “Trigger new negativity every hour”
is the new mantra of 24/7 any time any where no matter
work culture. Lets be positively negative.

MONKEY SALVATION FOR A FISH
“What on earth are you doing?”
said I to the monkey when I saw
him Hit a fish from the water and
place it on a tree.
“I am saving it from drowning’,” was
the reply.
The sun that gives sight to the eagle
blinds the owl.
THE LITTLE FISH
“Excuse me,” said an ocean fish, “You are older than I
so can you tell me where to find this thing they call the
Ocean?”
“The Ocean,” said the older fish, “is the thing you are
in now,”
“Oh, this? But this is water. What I’m seeking is the
Ocean,” said the disappointed fish as he swam away to
search elsewhere.
He came to the Master in sanyasi robes. And he spoke
sanyasi language: “For years I have been seeking God. I
have sought Him everywhere that He is said to be - on
mountain peaks, the vastness of the desert, and the
silence of the cloister and the dwellings of the poor.”
“Have you found him?” the Master asked. “No. I have
not. Have you?”
What could the Master say? The evening sun was
sending shafts of golden light into the room. Hundreds
of sparrows were twittering on a banyan tree. In the
distance one could hear the sound of highway traffic. A
mosquito droned a warning that it was going to
strike... And yet this man could sit there and say he had
not found Him.
After a while he left, disappointed, to search
elsewhere.
Stop searching, little fish. There isn’t anything to look
for. All you have to do is look.
“People of our time are losing the power of celebration. Instead of
celebrating we seek to be amused or entertained. Celebration is an
active state, an act of expressing reverence or appreciation. To be
entertained is a passive state--it is to receive pleasure afforded by
an amusing act or a spectacle.... Celebration is a confrontation,
giving attention to the transcendent meaning of one's actions.
“I prefer just being with people I like.
That's my way of celebrating.”
― Michael Jackson, Moonwalk
“I've told my children that when I die, to release balloons in the
sky to celebrate that I graduated. For me, death is a graduation.”
― Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
“If you can’t celebrate your success, appreciate your failure. Since
life is all about celebration and appreciation.”
