Events aplenty this summer
at Frankfort Public Library
Summer at the library is non-stop
fun. The theme this year is “Build a
Better World.” There will be more than
50 children’s program, including new
labs on science, technology, engineering,
art and math (STEAM).
Adults can build a better world on
Saturday, June 10 at our first bi-annual
electronics recycling event and volunteer
fair. Bring your outdated or broken
electronics to our event for free; certified
disposal with A M Greentek and
stop in to discuss volunteer opportunities
with representatives from more
than 20 local service organizations.
All ages are encouraged to engage
their brains to build a better world by
reading! Summer reading programs
begin Monday, June 5. Register online
at www.frankfortlibrary.org. Reading
can: fight Alzheimer’s, expand your
learning, improve your mood, give
yourself therapy, enhance your memory,
help you be more attractive, boost
your analytical thinking, expand your
vocabulary, encourage your writing,
teach you to empathize and be a leader.
Lincoln-Way Youth Strings offer two-week
summer camp of musical fun, learning
Calling all young string
players: Follow that school
orchestra experience by joining
the Lincoln-Way Youth
Strings Summer Camp.
The camp – which will be
held from June 19-29 at Lincoln-Way
East High School
– is two weeks of musical
fun.
Every year, LWYS offers a
summer strings camp at East,
culminating in an outdoor
summer concert in Frankfort.
The camp serves all current
violin, viola, cello and string
bass students with at least six
months playing experience
or advanced middle school
students who wish to audition
for the ILMEA District
Junior High Festival.
The LWYS orchestra program
is continuing a nearly
two-decade tradition, with
four orchestras and over 110
young string musicians from
the southwest suburbs coming
together to learn and create
music.
Every fall, new beginning
students can join, as
well. Students receive large
group and small group instruction
and put on fabulous
concerts. The young
musicians display their talents
at the Winter Concert,
Strings Extravaganza Concert
– which features string
musicians in elementary
school all the way through
high school – The ArtWorks!
Festival at Lincoln-Way East
High School, the LWE High
School Symphony Orchestra
Concert and the annual
LWYS Spring Concert.
Guest artists are brought
in to perform with the students.
To note, private teachers
run clinics throughout
the year, and students continue
to learn technique and
literature that will prepare
them for any high school
symphony orchestra. The
top-level Chamber Orchestra
performs at multiple community
events each year, including
village events, high
school events and weddings.
Each year, students enjoy
the winter break and end of
the year parties, participate
in Solo and Ensemble Contest
and audition for the Illinois
Music Educators Association
District Festival. Fall
registration for the 2017-18
season will be Saturday,
September 9 at Lincoln-Way
East High School.
