Full steam ahead at St. Mary
Catholic School in Mokena
St. Mary Catholic School
in Mokena provides a nurturing
environment where faith,
education, and moral values
are promoted and reinforced.
In order to further this mission,
the school will be undergoing
a renovation this summer
to create a new three-year- old
preschool classroom and contemporary
STEAM (science,
technology, engineering, art,
mathematics) classroom.
STEAM is a unique approach
to enhance student learning and
understanding of how all things
relate to each other, in school
and in life. It emphasizes the integration
of the arts and offers
more creativity to students in
the learning process. STEAM
allows educators to become
more of a facilitator, while students
are given greater choice
and learning becomes about the
process instead of the product.
“We are blessed to be able
to build this new classroom
that will allow for the integration
of the arts with science,
technology, engineering, and
mathematics,” states Beth Cunningham,
Principal, St. Mary
Catholic School. “We believe
that by integrating our fine arts
program into our existing science,
technology, engineering
and mathematics (STEM) curriculum,
we will create an even
stronger learning environment
for our students.”
St. Mary’s teachers always
strive to engage students while
making learning fun! With the
addition of the STEAM room,
St. Mary students will begin using
TAB (Teaching for Artistic
Behavior) art theory, working in
centers where they may choose
to create the art that excites
