25 ways to enjoy the season
As the weather gets warmer and school is let out for the summer, families
are starting to plan upcoming vacations. Summer is finally here, and
with a multitude of fun events waiting to be explored, it is time to enjoy
what the southwest suburbs have to offer. Since now is the time to get out
and soak up the sun, what follows is a list of the Top 25 events happening
in the area this summer.
1. Woofstock
and Pet Parade
All animals are welcome
for the parade at 1
p.m. on Saturday, May
20 at the Main Park Picnic
Grove, 10925 W. La
Porte Road, Mokena. Parade
prizes will be awarded
to the top winners for:
Best Dressed, Most Exotic,
Most Original, Smallest
Pet and Largest Pet.
Registration begins at 1
p.m. with the 1/4 mile fun
walk along the Main Park
wooded trail beginning
at 1:30 p.m. Costumes
are optional. Beginning
at 2 p.m. there will be
canine contests for: Best
Trick, Most Obedient,
Ultimate Frisbee Catch
and Hot Dog Relay. All
dogs must be on a leash

Tinley Park: Memorial
Day Ceremony
The Veterans Commission
is to host the 2016
Memorial Day Ceremony

Observance
Orland Park’s Memorial

and a presentation of colors
honors veterans. For

29. The ceremony is to
begin at 10 a.m. at St.

proceed to Pioneer Cemetery
and conclude at St.
John’s Cemetery. Following
the procession, the
VFW, located at 19852
Wolf Road, Mokena, is to
host a gathering with hot
dogs and refreshments,
plus entertainment by

Theatre beginning
at noon.
Frankfort: Memorial Day
Ceremony
Frankfort is to honor
veterans during its Memorial
Day Ceremony at
10-11 a.m. Monday, May
29, at Breidert Green
Park between Kansas and
Oak streets. There will
also be a performance
by the Hickory Creek
Middle School Tiger
Band. In case of rain, the
event will be held indoors
at the Founders Community
Center, 140 Oak

New Lenox: Memorial
Day Remembrance
New Lenox is to honor
veterans with the American
Legion Post 1977 and
New Lenox VFW Post
9545 at 11 a.m. on Monday,
May 29. The public
is encouraged to come
and reflect on those who

3. Summertime Stride
5K Run/Walk
The Summertime
Stride is to feature many
runners and walkers during
the annual event,

children ages 10 and
younger can participate
in the children’s beginning
at approximately
9:15 a.m. Distances and
heats for the children’s
dashes are to vary by
age. All participants in
the children’s dashes will
receive a ribbon/prize.
Preregister by 5 p.m. on
Thursday, June 1, to receive
$5 off the normal
registration fee. Day-of
registration costs $25
and runs from 7:30-8:25
a.m. in the Willowview
Park parking lot. The
participation fee is $5 for
the children’s dashes. To

4. Kid’s Fishing Derby
Rain or shine, the New
Lenox Park District is
to host a fishing derby
at 8:30 a.m. Saturday,
June 3 in Hibernia Park,
1664 Eagle Circle, New
Lenox. Children will
fish for plenty of prizes.
Winners are to be determined
in three different
age categories, from ages
2-6, 7-11 and 12-16. Bait
will also be available onsite
for purchase, as well
as food and drinks from
the concession stand. The
derby begins at 9:30 a.m.,
and winners will be announced
at 11 a.m. Bringing
bathing suits to enjoy
the park’s splash pad is
encouraged. Registration
ends Wednesday, May

Orland Park: Taste of
Orland Park
The annual Taste of Orland
Park is to take place
at Friday, Aug. 4 through
Sunday, Aug. 6, at the
Village Center, 14700
Ravinia Ave. The threeday
festival typically
features food from favorite
local restaurants, free
activities for all to enjoy
and live music. For more
