CBC records its best finish ever in state high school rugby tournament

The CBC Cadets rugby team ended the
2017 season with its highest finish in the
program’s history. CBC placed third in
the recent state tournament in Jefferson
City, finishing 2-1.
“Third-place is the highest ranking
CBC has ever had and we will just build
on it next year,” CBC coach Mike Nabholz
said.
The Cadets ended with a 6-1 record
in the regular season. At the Ruggerfest
Tournament, CBC repeated as meet
champions by winning all four games.
Nabholz said he believed in his squad
and thought they could win at state.
“We felt like we were state contenders
from the start,” Nabholz said. “We just
came up a little short against the Junior
Blues in a 24-17 loss in the second game
of the tournament that put us in the thirdplace
game. Our young men were very
confident going into the tournament, and
it never wavered.”
CBC opened against Winnetonka and
rallied to score a 21-17 victory. For Nabholz,
the comeback victory showed just
how much heart his club has.
“Winnetonka came out strong with their
big guys upfront and had
a 17-0 lead at halftime,”
Nabholz said. “CBC got
fired up and realized they
were getting tired, so we
were able to move around
a lot better the second half
and came back to win.”
“The biggest difference
was CBC’s conditioning,”
he added. “You could tell
we were wearing them
down and there was nothing
they could do.”
Senior Diego Haro, who
attends Parkway South,
caught Nabholz’ eye with
his play in that game.
Haro got the offense fired up and ready
to take on the second half.
The Game 2 loss to the Junior Blues,
which left the Cadets playing for third
overall, was a tough one.
“We knew they were going to be a
tough team, but we felt like if we could
play our game, we would be victorious,”
Nabholz said. “We went back and forth
on the first tries, but we found ourselves
down 17-10 at halftime.
“In the second half, each team was just

as tough as the first half and scored one
try each. We were marching down the
field with no time remaining to try to tie
the match, but it didn’t go our way.”
CBC was not going to fold after the
loss, Nabholz said. To close out the tournament,
they played the Liberty Jays of
Kansas City.
“I pulled the seniors away from everyone
and reminded them that this was
their last game of their high school
career,” Nabholz said. “I also told them I
was so proud of them, and, no matter the
outcome of the game, they were incredible
young men that had endured three
incredible battles over the state tournament
weekend.”
Nabholz knew his Cadets would
respond to the challenge, and the Cadets
scored a dominating 42-19 victory.
“I feel like our boys wanted to make a
statement to themselves after the loss to
