State of the Art - Artist’s Book
Foreword
All art is influenced by what has gone before and is constantly pushing the boundaries in both technical advancement and
in taste. Today’s art is no exception. We have experienced the “shock of the new” where artists sought to astound us by
breaking down the barriers of convention and of what was deemed acceptable. Artists such as Goya and David who sought
to discard the old type of subject matter through to J.M.W. Turner, who in his quest to surpass the sublime painting of
Claude Lorrain, developed a unique style which in his later days became quite abstract. On through the looser styles of the
Impressionists who wanted to paint what they saw with their own eyes and not through the eyes of others, the influence
of Japanese and Chinese art, Artists such as Braque, Picasso and Mondrian saw us through the periods of Expressionism,
Cubism and so on to the abstract. We then saw the differing approaches of Jackson Pollack and Andy Warhol, Pop art, Op
Art, Dadaism, Conceptualism etc. through to the spawning of the Young British Artists who are noted for shock tactics, and
include Damien Hirst with his animals in formaldehyde, Tracey Emin, famous for her unmade bed, and Chris Ofili for his use
of elephant dung.
So what of art today?
If we look primarily at two dimensional work, we can see that these influences have percolated down and artists have taken
from them whatever it is to which each responds. Many artists seek, not to challenge, but to learn from their predecessors;
picking up the reins and forging ahead in their chosen direction whilst applying their own interpretation developed through
their own reactions to the stimulus which drives them to create. Of course, there are still those who seek to ram boundaries
but there have always been those who prefer to build upon the foundation and validity of the various art movements of the
past. The result is a treasure trove of different styles and techniques, not all of which seek to break new ground, but rather
to consolidate, and stand on the shoulders of what has gone before in order to reach a higher level.
In these days of electronic communications, where we are bombarded with imagery of a fleeting and constantly changing
nature, it is refreshing to be confronted with something which we can take time to enjoy, to observe in different lights, to
savour the texture, the colour, the atmosphere, the technique, the talent and to attempt to understand what lies behind
the creation confronting us.
Art is a means of expression, yet it is unfortunate that many viewers don’t know how to look at original works; they are so
used to seeing “clean” reproductions or “enhanced” imagery that they no longer know how to read or appreciate an original.
Some images, of course, do not reproduce well and this may well be the intention of the artist, thus inviting the viewer to
seek out art which can be viewed “in the flesh”, which, after all, is that from which we can derive the most pleasure. So go,
seek out the artists whose work you’ve only seen in reproduction and experience the real thrill of seeing!
Prologue
There are those who argue that contemporary art emerged after the 2nd world war in order to distance itself from the
modern art movement.
Without wishing to cause controversy with art historians, it is my belief that contemporary art comes from the beginnings
of the culture of colour and design from the very first marks made in caves to the marks made today on modern canvasses.
The styles, schools and movements found in contemporary art are like an experimental language from pre-history to the
present day and are evidenced in all artistic expression.
What defines contemporary art in itself, regardless of the materials used, is the commotion within each artist, their awareness
and their technical skill.
There are certain periods when art has been more in focus than others, depending on the prevailing social, political and
religious factors.
There may have been a kind of clash between contemporary art and modern art but both are connected, because it is true
that art has only one direction - creativity!
Is there creativity in every art movement?
All movements are creative, radical or even disturbing, be they hyper-realism, urban, digital or naïve.
Even though the drawing and perspective found in contemporary naïve art might be considered clumsy, it can still be said to
result in a beauty outside of recognised artistic standards.
Could it be that this imbalance between the drawing and perspective is related to another kind of imbalanced art, that of
“art brut”?
Dubuffet, a scholar of this genre, defends this umbilical connection and, after having made a study of this vanguard in the
context of its contemporary relationship with modernity, I agree.
The origins, objectivity and development of contemporary art and its styles, are in the hands of the artist to take what they
want and to do with it what they will.
In artistic terms, I maintain that, no matter the kind of artistic expression, contemporary always relates to the current era,
hour, day and year.
Subjectivity exists, as with all concepts and I accept that that is how it is. It is the artist who is principally responsible for the
origins of a culture that is contemporary – like art!
Through his work and his personal expression an artist reveals his state of mind.
This work, once it is exhibited is subjected to a multitude of interpretations.
It cannot be considered as a work of art, only as an artistic expression.
Artistic expressions cannot be catalogued in the history of art, but they have their own niche.
When a painter paints a flower, a piece of fruit or an object, he is interested in the beauty of what he is painting.
If this doesn’t happen, the painter expresses himself in a vacuum, negating the beauty of the drawing, the colour and the
technique.
Art is a work in progress, in constant evolution, from the most classical to the most daring artistic expression.
In these chaotic times, when I look at new artworks, I find that I am driven to remain mute, to take my time to just look in
silence, before I try to reach a conclusion.
A work out of context is dead; the true artist loves what is current because it exists in context, with or without reference to
modernism, and therefore must always be contemporary.
Note from the publisher
To give new artists, alongside established ones, an opportunity to show their art in a book like this, was the great challenge
we set ourselves. Selecting contemporary artists based on their most recent artwork is never an easy task. The curator´s goal
in presenting a wide range of contemporary artists and their work was made a little easier by drawing on Galeria Aberta’s
extensive experience of promoting art and artists; a mission which it has undertaken for the past thirteen years.
Of course our own ideas, aesthetics and tastes can influence our decisions. Nevertheless, we believe that we’ve struck the
right balance and have succeeded in showcasing a wide variation in terms of origins, styles and careers. From Naïve Art to
Modern Art, the selected works demonstrate a recognisable high quality and innovation. The end result is a most eclectic
art book.
Represented in the “State of the Art - Artist’s Book”, are 97 artists from 23 countries, demonstrating that there are no
boundaries where art is concerned.
I want to thank Angelo Vaz, Bela Xavier, Dulcídio Coelho, Paulo Tércio, Paulo Themudo, Margarida Serra and MariAn Simpson
for their team work and commitment to the project.
Acácio Cainete
Acácio Cainete is an artist who has explored many paths, many techniques and many themes but all of them have strong ties with surrealism.
Indeed, it is his creative work (surrealism and fantastic art) for which Acácio Cainete is notable, especially in his broad yet balanced palette of bright
and vivid colors. The artist, himself, says that the inspiration for his creativity and originality comes from his dreams, his nightmares, his subconscious,
the supernatural and the irrational. It is not only his use of colour, but also the combination of different textures such as paper, fabric and sand which
help to anchor his work in the present day.
Acácio Cainete paints with a freedom born from not being burdened by any external pressure or influence, either personal or commercial. He paints
and draws solely for his own pleasure, liberated in the knowledge that he is accountable only to himself. He embraces and expands his ideas, creating
surrealist paintings and objects with assurance and strong emotional impact.
He considers that he is “not a slave to time but rather savours each moment”
Drawing or painting is, for him, a sense of peace and harmony of the mind, “it’s like cutting loose the ties of professional and social pressures imposed
on us over the years.”
Alcida Maria
Suddenly, we find ourselves in an enchanted kingdom suffused with explosions of colour,
where magic elves deliver beams of light creating an astonishing universe affording
delicateness and glimpses of creativity.
Alcida’s art exposes the existence of an inner self that eschews routine. It fluctuates
between the abstract (particularly in moments of unrest) and a contemporary, figurative
style indicative of tranquillity and peace. The mix of the composition (inspired by sentiment
Anunciação Gomes
Ever since childhood, Anunciação
has been fascinated by colour,
light and shade, but it wasn’t
until she was nearly fifty, that she
started her journey into the world
of art. Having experimented with
different painting techniques,
she found that it was watercolour
which harmonized best with her
own particular sensitivities and
sensibilities.
Finding inspiration in her
everyday surroundings, together
with memories of her childhood,
Anunciação conveys her images
to the paper with a delicacy and
a mildness, characteristic of her
My artistic vision
The artwork depends on containing the title of many characters, faces and crowded events that need attention… It tells the story of the man in his
different expressions. Therefore, I can see that all humans, no matter where they come from, are the same in one point and that is expressing and
Bela Maleth
Bela Maleth was born in
1957 in Bekescsaba, Hungary.
Bela’s artistic talent revealed
itself early in his life. Since
childhood he showed interest
in art and writing poems. Over
Beth Sales
Brazil
Beth surrender to the flow of images, the essence that goes
beyond that is in transit, which escapes. The city of Dønna is her
actual refuge, but being in Salvador, her art has the same force
and freedom. Almost as an automatic feature, objects, animals,
people are juxtaposed inside a fictitious spatial structure,
disillusion, with strange and contradictory scales in size, causing
us a strangeness instigating. Cats, birds, houses, fish and
landscapes have the same degree of power in the lyrical work
of Beth, rejecting any qualification hierarchy.
Territories of memory, of immediate affection, personal
experience and collective experience are places of power of
imagination to this painter who participates with a long and
immense profligacy of all senses for a reunion with poetry.
Cecilia Flaten
Cecilia Flaten.... Magic Landscapes inspired in the Norwegian Mithology and in Patagonia´s Lands. In the search of a more tangible art, Cecilia Flaten
regards painting as her current great love. At the beginning of her relationship with the medium Flaten worked in an innocent and playful way, which
is demonstrated in her naïve works. In such works she experiments with techniques and colors that allude directly to her Scandinavian ancestors.
Entering into a more mature stage, Flaten began working with oil till know, during 20 years, a medium that provides her with the stability and desired
pattern of expression - allowing her to represent properly the legends, myths and the dreams that nest in her mind and in her blood. Her work is
a great meditation on natural elements. Blending the fluidic atmosphere of the sky with the blended appearance of the horizont: she captures the
interaction of light and the absorption inside landscapes. It is a magical and poetic work.
Dulcídio
Portugal
Dulcídio has a meticulous way of painting. He chooses bright colours which are neither glaring nor unpleasant to the eye. He knows how to arrange
Edmundo Cruz
Portugal
The work of Edmundo Cruz has a distinctive style and appearance. He is one of the most important names in Portuguese contemporary figurative
painting. Whilst he produces magnificent work in watercolour, it is for his oil painting that he is most renowned. His works are the result of a detailed
compositional process and, through his unique brushwork, he captures and recreates such a sublime atmosphere, that the viewer is transported to
another world. With a perfect knowledge of the art of composition, and his mastery of colour and light, Edmundo Cruz is, undoubtedly, deserving of
the recognition afforded by his immense talent, of which we are so proud!
Eduardo Motcceli
Eduardo Motcceli, a self-taught artist from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, paints in the impressionist style and his work is featured in the on-line catalogue
of Julio Louzada. Over a period of 20 years he has received more than 30 awards for his work and he has taught painting for more than 10 years
encouraging those who wish to join this fabulous world of art. His paintings, which cover a vast array of subjects including seascapes, landscapes,
townscapes, still life and abstract, demonstrate a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. Motcceli’s work displays a certain rigor, a tension, a balancing
act between strength, simplicity, the past and the present. His surfaces are roughly textured, scratched and scraped and sculpted with a palette knife
using a limited range of earth colours such as ochres, umbers, and siennas, plus blue.
Elena Bissinger
Romania
Elena Bissinger, (née Oros) artist and poet and the eldest of 5 girls, was born on January 2nd 1964, in Beius, Bihor, Romania. Her father, a painter by
profession, nurtured her budding artistic talents and was her first mentor in the fine arts. Elena has painted since she was in middle school, and went
on to graduate from the Francis Hubik Oradea Art School and Faculty of Visual Arts Oradea. She had her first art exhibition in 1997 and, since then,
has continued to exhibit both at home and
abroad. Elena’s style and use of colour have
elicited reactions defining her work as being
full of optimism. Her energetic employment
of the palette knife is used to create tangible,
impressionistic flower paintings. In her
abstract work she uses sweeping strokes to
create images full of vitality thus exposing
her inner passions and thirst for life. Elena
was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2008
which served to intensify her love of life and
her desire to express that passion through her
art and poetry. The challenges she has faced
as a painter conspire to give her more power,
dignity, and strength of character.
Irina Corduban
UK
Art is not a career choice, it is a life choice
I have always enjoyed Art from an early age. I can remember spending
most of my childhood just drawing and being inspired to make and
design anything and everything! This love of Art has stayed with me
and developed and grown and, now, I cannot imagine wanting to do
anything else. I have always wanted to work as an art teacher because it
has always felt like the right direction for me to take.
I have a Master degree in Art and a degree in teaching and I had
been studying traditional fresco on wet plaster that gave me a great
opportunity to work on mural scale. Mural art work had a big influence
on my creations at that time and even though I now use different
mediums I still paint on a large scale but now using canvasses, almost a
wall size. My style is very academic because I love details but into large
scale and also I enjoy to paint on color canvass and the most on black
canvass by painting only on the light side and trying to engage the viewer
to recreate on his mind the rest of the painting.
I run my own art tuition classes at Harrow Art Centre, Hatch End, for
adults, and I also have a small group for private tuition. On my art tuition
I encourage my learners to discover traditional painting and drawing, as
proportions, mix up colors and learn different techniques (watercolor,
acrylic, pastel, oil, mix media, engraving and silk painting).
For those of us that choose art, it is not a career or a hobby, but a passion,
a way of life. There is no right or wrong in art and it can be translated a
million different ways. We all see the world differently, and when I take a
moment to look around me, my mind starts to buzz with ideas about my
material surroundings.
“If you ever want to know what a creative person’s mind feels like,
imagine a browser with 2,857 tabs open. All . The. Time.” (a quote
reflecting my mind graciously posted on Facebook). By Irina Corduban
I have been painting over 35 years
and know of no better way to
express ones inner self than the
wonderful world of art. I am a strong
advocate of black and white acrylic,
used as an underpainting. Acrylic
and oil paintings as well benifit from
this technique. It helps shape, and
tone down, and give substance to
your creations. Also I noticed it gave
strength to the paint application.
Once tried I was hooked and rarely
work without it. All of my work is
João Bello
João Bello is a self-taught artist born in 1978 in the town of Benedita, in the municipality of Alcobaça,
Portugal, where he currently resides. At 9 years old he began to draw using pencil and charcoal, progressing,
at the age of 12, to painting in oil, watercolor and acrylic and it was at this tender age that he began to
exhibit his works. It was clear that João had developed a predilection for painting! When he was 19 he
progressed into abstract painting - experimenting with different techniques and styles. Today, however, he
identifies himself mainly with realism. His paintings depict realistic characters set in a contemporary and
aspirational world transmitting strong and vibrant sensations.
José Travassos
Portugal
Life is a wonderful journey whilst seen as a process of ceaseless apprenticeship and rediscovery. José Travassos never ceases to amaze us. He believes
that life is beautiful, attractive, and in constant mutation. José Travassos’ personal aesthetic and technique are quite remarkable. His treatment of
light and shadow shows great skill. The harmony of colours, layered one on top of the other, offer special greatness to the beautiful landscapes.
The visual result is both transcendent and wonderful. The artist expresses a wide range of feelings and emotions, and leads the viewer to embark
on a very special journey through magic, vulnerable atmospheres, which lie far beyond the boundaries of the first glimpse. José Travassos took
great interest in the natural surrounding and became passionately involved with it. The artist’s work is mainly focused on lit landscapes particular
enhancement to the majestic sea and the unique Azorean skies worthy of contemplation. The realism and the evident attention to detail, however,
do not overshadow the artist’s skillful composition, designed to make the paintings emotionally and aesthetically satisfying.
Kim Juchul
South Korea
“Eiffel Tower and the Seine River Landscape”
38 x 45.5cm - oil on canvas - 2012
Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated,
“A life in harmony with Nature, the
love of nature and of virtue, will purge
the eyes to understand her text.”
Contemporary artist Juchul Kim draws
inspiration from this philosophy in his
unique compositions which explore
and celebrate nature across the world.
Mr. Kim is fascinated with the theories
of the Impressionists and the Post
Impressionists and their determination
to study and capture the effects of light
on the natural environment through
expressive brush strokes.
With symphonic precision, he translates
familiar scenes onto his canvas with a
unique perspective, orchestrated by
the delicacy of his brush strokes and
the kaleidoscopic hues of his palette.
His sudden bursts of pure, brilliant color
with splendid differences of touch and
tone exemplify his natural originality and
closeness with nature. Mr. Kim achieves
strong contrasts of light and shade.
With an insatiable curiosity for color, Mr. Kim’s paintings communicate
emotion as he uses color as a tool for linking the viewer with the sublime
experience of being in the landscape. As a colorist, he is a virtuoso in using
the full range of his palette to create powerful fragments of dynamic tones
alongside vibrantly orchestrated planes which immediately demand the
viewer’s attention. Excelling at depicting the environment around him, it
is not the tangible qualities that are highlighted in his paintings, but the
soft memories of specific locals across the world.
Lance MG
Lance started with photography in 2010, by one day going out with a camera he got as a gift from his husband, Peter. It was small but effective, and
although it did not have a lot of “bell’s and whistles”, it certainly produced amazing photos. Finding his style was challenging, trying all different types
of subjects, angles, lighting, etc. Over the next 3 years, he became more focused and passionate about photography, which he eventually found a
style that works. He enjoys taking a day with his camera in hand and walking around town, snapping hundreds of pictures, looking for that perfect
Painting had always been an art form that I’d been passionate
Mariana Oros was born in Beius, Romania. She studied painting at Art College and has
participated in various group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Mariana’s
artworks can be found in private collections around the world, she has appeared on TV and
the international art assembly held in the Art Gallery LIKUM in Brcko, Bosnia- Herzegovina.
Mariana’s maxim is not to forget her roots: as an artist she seeks to realise a rhythm, evolved
over time, to reveal and express an elusive perception, a reminiscence, an abstract sense of
something which took hold in her childhood and which drives her on.
Mickael Caruge
Mickael Caruge is a painter from the French island of Martinique. He works in
acrylics, producing portraits founded in realism with the aim of challenging the
concept of boundaries within the context of racial identity. The “social body” is
the subject for his work which focuses on the displacement of black people. His
the heading of “Caribbean Boundaries”and features canvases on a set of themes
which present a sociological anchoring peculiar to the Caribbean. He uses graphic
elements and codes to focus on plural human identity and offers a closer look at
Nicolau Campos
Should be highlighted the seriousness that it has, one by one, each piece from his
collection, without worrying about the style or technical side, without jeopardizing
the latency of life that originates around it, each character shows the element
establishing itself, cold, almost insensitive to what happens, such as wanting to
mark the indestructible and the proximity to the ever-lasting.
It will not be an exaggeration to comment that Nicolau Campos looks for immortality
in the figure, and that through it, the immortality of the being, therefore the sordid
utilization of what is represented, the simplicity of space and it’s wholeness and his
Patricia Molina
Mexican Visual Artist born in 1959. Patricia is currently involved in giving
new life to an ancient Turkish technique known as Ebru, more commonly
known as paper marbling. This method, whilst having its origin in
ancient times, offers tremendous potential for the contemporary artist,
be it figurative or abstract, to produce unique monoprints. It presents
enormous scope not least in the array of palettes available, which range
from subtle to intensely vibrant. Patricia Molina is refining the process;
manipulating the density of the oil as it’s floated on the water and
proudly demonstrating the endless ability of the technique to produce
lyrical narrative painting. Patricia believes that it facilitates boundless
Paulo Tercio
UK
Contemporary artist Paulo Tercio studied both at the Slade School of Fine Arts and Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. Like Frida Kahlo and Tracey
Emin his compelling creations are visual representations translated from his personal world. His paintings featured here are mesmerising, awe
inspiring disclosures.
A fecund Imagination is surely at the heart of the alluring force of his work. A citizen of the universe whose “stirring art” create bridges between past
and present, soul development and refinement of the mind.
Fashion Designer Arkadius quoted: “Real art is the one which stirs strong emotions in you. It always gives you space for your own interpretation of
the world portrayed by the artist. Paulo Tercio’s work is very memorable, poetic although also full of pain at times. His use of lighting is uniquely
mysterious and thought provoking.”
Paulo Themudo
Portugal
To fully appreciate the work of Paulo Themudo you have to unlock his
innermost secret chambers, for his paintings are poetic works of colour
carrying messages for us all of pain, joy, passion and love. He cannot
contemplate life without painting and he complements his painting with his
writing. Using his intuition, he paints with an inquiring academic freedom
which probes and explores various techniques leading to the creation of
sincere works, - spontaneous and impulsive.
Like his native town of Matosinhos, (Portugal) which is steeped in fishing
traditions, Paulo too, has surpassed the draw of traditionalism. With an
unconventional discipline, he creates for us an abstract dimension and, by
using design, colour and movement, he liberates our imagination.
His ghostly figures awaken in us a riot of emotions that lead us to a new
vision of humanity. The bright hues set against the darker or duller shades,
illustrate a discerning confidence. His works are explosive, yet maintain a
serene symphony of inner balance. His art goes beyond the imagination of
the ordinary man, at times managing to surprise even himself, thus it would
be a mistake and premature to try to classify the work of Paulo.
To apply a Freudian analysis, it is only the future than can tell us much about
Ryan Demaree
USA
As a Surrealist painter I have always found it
key within my work to search for that which lies
beyond the immediate world, that is, to search
for meaning in the events of the everyday and
to portray them through my eyes as an artist.
For me that is what calls me to be a surrealist
painter, the dire urge and instinct to search for
meaning in a chaotic world and to convey it
through symbolic gestures in the form of paint.
At the end of the day, the world is a set and man
is an ape.
Semini Kwsta
Semini Kwsta - Visual Artist
The artist Semini Kwsta manages to redefine impressionism and
expressionism, whilst flirting with Fauvism. The movement and liveliness
of her work, created with vibrant colour and positive and expressive
brushwork, evoke the essence, without trying to imitate it, of the great
figurative painting which dominated the end of the nineteenth and the
beginning of the twentieth centuries.
The originality of Semini’s work lies in her refusal to succumb to
novelty. Her work has no foundation in the fads of postmodernity or
in contemporary quirks which have often reduced the artist to mere
promoter or performer, subservient to the work itself.
The surface of each of Semini’s pictures is so heavily sculpted that it may
be compared to a roughly hewn stone wall or a glutinous mass. Despite
this, the final effect is one of fluidity, imparted both by the gestural
quality of the brushstrokes and by the visual lightness generated by the
manipulation of colour.
Iran
My love for art is so great that I would do anything to be successful at
it. I spend many days and nights throwing myself into the struggle to
reach its pinnacle. I am consumed by it. I see art, especially drawing and
painting, as a medium through which I can speak. I believe that my body
was created to give voice via my art; that the sensations inside me can be
released only by crying out through my work.
Sônia Castro was born on July 11, 1955 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
Sônia also graduated in Business Administration and Law, going on to
Wedad Alnasser, is an artist from Jordan, who, after completing her master’s degree in law in 2006, was inspired to take up art, a decision which
was to become her salvation. Starting with self-portraits she explored the battleground of her personal experiences of alienation. From these she
progressed into combining her own inward perspective with that of the wider political view (Exile). Now, exile and the dramatic changes that comes
The working of stone, or any other noble, natural
