State of the Art - Artist’s Book Vol.II
| 7

Foreword
Welcome to volume II of State of the Art, Artist’s Book. You might question was there really a need to release another
volume so soon after the publication of the first one in 2013? Clearly yes, the demand exists both from the artist seeking
representation and wider exposure, and for the public, whose thirst to uncover the work of the wealth of artists from
around the world, remains unsated. This book also satisfies the need of the artist to be seen alongside his contemporaries
and to explore their work, so it is indeed, an artist’s book!
Here we have a volume which dips into a huge ocean of artistic talent and has succeeded in landing a catch of precious and
rare pearls of the art world.
The artists represented here are concerned with the visual message, they don’t rely on wordy descriptions or concepts,
instead they rely on portraying their idea and message through the use of paint as has been the case from the time of the
first cave paintings. A code, developed over the ages through education, instinct, culture and the subconscious, equips us
with the knowledge to decipher these pictures. The artist is content for the viewer to interpret the work without recourse
to knowing the innermost feelings or intentions present in the artist’s mind at the time of its execution. Often the image will
mean different things to different people and this is a reflection of life where we all see things from our own viewpoint: the
story can have more than 2 sides. We shouldn’t try to classify or categorize too strictly as this will inhibit the appreciation of
what the eye beholds. This is not to say that we should suspend our intellectual process, rather we should allow it to expand
to include that which is beyond verbal description in the way that we accept feelings which defy explanation. Who of us can
say why they prefer blue to red and who is qualified to say that they are right or wrong?
Without being in the presence of the artist we are challenged to enter the painting in an effort to comprehend the meaning
behind it. This takes time so, whilst it may be considered important that the artwork is forceful enough to make us want to
stop and look more closely, we can often overlook something which is deserving of closer scrutiny and, once we start to pick
at it, we can unravel the most marvellous of representations.
Prologue
Fine Art is a form of communication encompassing vision, touch and sound.
It is communicated in many forms demonstrated through using different techniques developed over time since those first
expressed in the caves of our ancestors.
This 2nd Edition of State of the Art | International Artist’s Book, edited by the Galeria Aberta / Art Vip Gallery, shows us a
global collection of contemporary works of art which combine to offer a profound knowledge of existing artistic heritage,
each artist serving society at the behest of beauty, culture, customs and tradition.
The promotion of artists by art critics, exhibitions, social networks, or through any other medium, is important for their (re)
cognition as artists and as a forum for the reception of their artworks.
Galeria Aberta, through staging exhibitions, producing books and other initiatives, provides this service, ensuring that the
work is presented at a level of quality capable of creating a social impact within the art world.
This book is not a dictionary, but a compilation of artists interested in promoting their work with a trusted organization
which is interested in protecting the needs of the artist.
There are many artists for who art, as well as being their profession, is a way of life: they live and breathe their art and,
through study and talent, strive to achieve recognition and success.
This publication is essentially a global group exhibition revealing itself to a world-wide audience sensitive to the aesthetic
qualities shown here in a multitude of formats. A group of diverse, self-motivated artists all communicating through common
elements, namely – colour and design.
One may question whether this book is a suitable form of communication for marketing artistic achievement, but these days
all forms of communication are valid and Galeria Aberta is a principled organization with the best interests of the artist being
its primary objective.
The artists featured in this publication should be considered as artists from the upper echelons of the world of fine art.
State of the Art | International Artist’s Book Vol. II, edited by the Galeria Aberta / Art Vip Gallery, continues with the same
strong personality of the first volume with a team that identifies and maintains the visible face of ART!
Note from the publisher
Once again new artists, alongside established ones, have the opportunity to show their art in the State of the Art - Artist’s
Alexandra Costa Gomes
Portugal
Trained as an engineer, his professional life was developed in the area of State financing and in the sector of international economic relations. The
passion for painting was constantly present in a particularly absorbing professional life and it assumed a key place after 2000 thanks to systematic
training at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes.
His plastic work reveals great sensibility to the Earth and the landscape. There is an understanding that culture is affirmed and that an ongoing and
fruitful dialogue takes place between roots and the present. If culture is associated with sowing the seed in the Earth, art is, in its essence, the cult
of the understanding of nature and humanity. He has participated in numerous collective exhibitions and has recently had individual exhibitions at
the Centro Nacional de Cultura and in the Gallery of the Casino Estoril.
Portugal
Ana Paula Bruno Palhas was born on 3rd March 1961, in the small city of
Grândola in Portgual’s Alentejo region.
She has always been fascinated by the arts especially by painting.
After some years of self-tuition she attended the Alencores Painting
satisfies her ambitions and which she loves most.
Ana enjoys the privilege of living in a region close to both the beauty of
Antonieta Martinho
Portugal
Antonieta Martinho was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She graduated
in medicine from the University of Lisbon in 1974. Antonieta has always shared her
life with art and has a special affinity with painting. She started to learn how to paint
in 2006 and is currently improving her knowledge of the techniques of oil painting
at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon. Her artistic output begins with the
exploration and deconstruction of selected images: she manipulates the various
forms as they emerge, transforming them into new, abstracted metaphors. At
times, some of these allegorical images impress on the imagination an expression,
an atmosphere and an intensity where the symbolism creates a language which
Bryan Stacy
USA
My legal name is Bryan Stacy (AKA:
LEAF) and I have been making art
for as long as I can remember. After
battling the rough world of street-life
and underground graffiti culture for
many years (and loving it), I eventually
got serious when I met my late mentor
and learned to hone my craft. I now
practice many types of art out of my
Tattoo Parlor/Art Factory (Anvil & Ink)
in Wilmington NC, and travel as much
as I can to paint murals, tattoo, and
meet other artists. Go big, stay up,
and stay inspired by the world around
you, enjoy the leaves as they change
Germany
Christine M. Vorwerk
Christine M. Vorwerk is a German artist, whose work consists of drawings,
abstract paintings, and photography.
The common topic of the images belonging to the cycle “EQUINOX” is that
state in nature when, twice a year, day and night are of equal length all
over the earth, marking the beginning of spring and autumn. It is a state in
which all dynamic powers of nature appear balanced and stable, referring
to mental and emotional balance: equanimity.
Thus, for example, the ram’s horn in EQUINOX II alludes to the beginning
of spring, called first point of Aries. At the same time the influence of past
seasons is still present, represented by autumn’s pears and the winter
bleakness of the stones.
Claudio Cassuto
United Kingdom
There is doubtless a word in Italian for the mood that pervades Claudio’s work.
As long as it’s seen to be fun, then he is happy. So let’s just say “Commedia
dell’Arte”. Whatever inspiration he discovered was gleaned from found and stored
objects, which suddenly came to life when restored and recycled. In Napoleon’s
Famous Words illustrated here, old wooden printing blocks in the colours of
the French flag suddenly become reality. The mirror effect allows the viewer
to read it backwords.! Nature’s Bounty shows reconsctructed flowers made
using both miniature clothes’ pegs, paper shredding and a piece of tree bark.
Double Vision is a mirrored effect composition using partly glass bricks. Recently
Claudio came second out of over 1.500 artists in the EAC Art Awards with this
composition “Napoleon’s Words”. The award ceremony took place at the House of
Lords in London. This artwork attracted great attention and some comments can be
seen below: “This is an extraordinary piece of contemporary artwork. The subject
is very unique, with fabulous creativity. I hope that many people like myself get to
appreciate his talent and geniality.” Sara de la Torre
“Technically hard to construct, it is very well made, poetic and dynamic, vibrant
colours it entertains and delights... a sculpture, it’s a youthful, happy piece! Great
Claudio! Whitechapel gallery maybe?” Imogen Milward
Dulcídio
Portugal
Dulcídio defines Art as communication, dreams, emotions, protest, aestheticism, and the ultimate human realization. “The good things in life are
made with art”. The need to communicate and personal fulfilment are what drive him to create. Dulcídio is essentially driven by his emotional
responses but, more importantly, he finds his personal balance when creating a painting. Dulcídio exposes his inner sensitivities for the viewer
to analyse and understand, welcoming their responses and evaluation. Should the viewer fail to react then he experiences a disturbing sense of
disappointment.
Much of Dulcídio works are thought provoking,
laced with social comment; crying out to be
regarded as a serious alert to the problems
faced by today’s society. In other works we
see his fascination with light and surrealism
often realised through his depictures of
creatures from the sea. As a keen scuba diver,
Dulcídio has often immersed himself in the
surreal world of these alien-like forms and his
fascination with them is plain.
Pulsating life forms propel through the
blackness and we can almost feel the
movement as they resonate on the canvas.
Seen within a dark space, light penetrates the
darkness both from the outside and from the
life forms themselves which glow with an inner,
energetic luminosity. Each organism radiates
its own light and illuminates the shadowy
world in which it thrives.
This darkness is not threatening; it is more akin
to a comforting cocoon nurturing its progeny.
The joy of the beauty of the subject matter felt
by Dulcídio is evident, transmitting freedom
and abandonment to the elements which give
them life.
Other images are more thought provoking,
juxtaposing unfamiliar elements which become
unified within an eerily lit, serene environment
often reminiscent of the work of Dali or Max
Ernst but transmitting tranquility rather than
disquiet.
Dulcídio is the founder, manager and president
of the Galeria Aberta - Artists Association. He
is represented in several collections in Portugal,
Spain and Denmark.
Ed Ribeiro
Brazil
Today, Ed Ribeiro is renowned for his unusual art of allowing paint to drip and flow
to help create images which reflect elements taken from both African culture
and the ancient Orixás, deities from the Yoruba religion which signify energy and
nature. When contemplating the work of this artist, we are able to feel the energy
and strength that Ed Ribeiro delicately and passionately conveys to each canvas.
Defined through positive energies and an inner force, each work of art is
evaluating and analysing her past work. She subscribes
to the view that creative work is a process of failing
repeatedly until you find the answer.
For Irina, creativity is the individual expression of
one’s needs, desires and existence. The world, in all
its beauty, generates ideas and the observation of
its magnificence inspires her to take risks in order to
further her creativity.
Irina deems that the power of inspiration can
concentrate the mind enough to make one immune
to internal and external pressures. She believes that
one can harness energy from duress and, coupled
with desire and ability, channel this potential into
creativeness. As an artist she is informed by, and
experiments with, emotions and sensations which give
rise to her creative depictions.
Irina’s artistic path has been heavily influenced by her
religious upbringing. She finds parallels in traditional,
religious paintings of penance, torture, pain and
punishment endured for the sake of one’s beliefs, to
the struggles experienced in creating one’s art.
She also finds stimulation and inspiration in the
contradictions in her mind. Images taken from many
sources such as her childhood, her dreams, days and
nights, good and evil are all exposed through her art like
the reflections in a shop window merging the outside
with the inside. The real world is combined with the
invented world leading us to question the deceptions
so prevalent within the environment in which we live.
Isaura Xavier
Portugal
Isaura Xavier was born in Porto, Portugal, on March
the 12th 1947. Despite her love of art and a great
desire to make a career of it, she followed advice
from her family and her English teacher and took
a degree in German Philology at Lisbon University.
However, after she was married and whilst she was
teaching English to 10 year olds, she attended art
school and began to realize her longed for dream
of painting. Her first exhibition was in Ermesinde,
near Porto in 1986. Since then, she has had 20
solo exhibitions and has also participated in
several collective ones throughout Portugal and,
in 2010, took part in one in Denmark. Art for her
is steeped in the values of her childhood and her
deep feelings for her country’s history, traditions
and landscape. Isaura believes that art is the most
engaging way of meeting God and his creations; it
is the fundamental project of her life to use art to
help others discover the beauty in the world.
Jan Jensen
The mainstream of modern art reflects our busy
schedules - continually on the move. The ability
to keep pace with this fast-moving current means
adopting a competitive edge - it’s about being
in front. In the international world of art the
constant flow of images is immense. Artists who
continue to express themselves through painting
find themselves frustrated as they furiously try
to accumulate broad, expressionist marks on
kilometres of canvas. Jan doesn’t bother. He starts
where the others left off. For Jan, time is not a thief,
but an expansive source allowing him to practise
his perceptive craftsmanship. His pictures are not
modern - they are timeless!
Jorge Vilaça’s relationship with
art began at an early age in
Santo Tirso in Portugal’s north
continues to develop through
the constant interchange
Juchul Kim
South Korea
A few years ago, Juchul Kim became fascinated with bridges and began to wonder about their function. She started to see the bridge in terms of its
history, its cultural exchanges and as a means of communication.
In the October of 2011, Juchul Kim spent time in Europe and New York and it was during these visits that she observed many more bridges. She saw
them immersed in the landscape, directing the focus of her work and linking all the essential elements. When she paints bridges, she is reminded of
Simon and Garfunkel`s song, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Now, sensing the arduous journey of life in the 21 century passing below a bridge, she
is inspired to try to paint a picture of it.
Lúcia Lupenny
To write about this artist is no easy task. Lúcia Lupenny Rodrigues, considers
herself to be an eclectic artist who has been gracing us with an honest
interpretation of art that has found a way to facilitate the meaning of
that which does not translate.
This artist is able to compose and create images which reflect what goes
on behind the scenes. She loves the smell of the paint and she sees
the colours as givers of life and energy. They bestow on her the gift of
silence, a friend that never betrays. It is the silence that Lúcia creates in
her work that makes her a creator of dreams.
images somewhere between reality and fantasy. Her whimsical landscapes of a sweet, summer
afternoon are created with colourful, contrasting hues, and her powers of observation, together
with her strong personality, provide the link between colour and imagination.
Manuel Alexandrino
Portugal
Unable to indulge his zeal for art during his active professional life, Manuel
Alexandrino was not about to deny his passion in later life and so, having taken a
painting course at Lisbon’s Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes (National Society of
Fine Art), he has decided to concentrate on the qualities of the colour and texture
of paint on canvas. It may be due to his late start and the sheer pleasure he takes in
creating art that accounts for the great diversity of his work.
His participation in the “State of the Art - Artist’s Book” has generated contacts in
London, Rome, Palermo and Florence.
Manuel was born in Sabugal, Portugal and wishes to dedicate this page to his
Maria Claudino
Drawing is the language of all arts... for Maria Claudino it’s her main tool.
Her pictures have an intellectual education which is unusual nowadays. The author grows the models which she then transcribes to the canvas from
Mother Nature herself. To interpretate nature the author has a concept of Art, perfected by her mind, a principle which had inspired the theory of
ideas of Plato and Aristotle, where it was believed that God had created the world and its objects and beings from archetypes or perfect shapes.
Maria Claudino feels herself a co-creator of nature and so her still life acquires the features of the original creation, drawing her inspiration from
Nature’s own pieces of Art.
On her still life, colours run around the reds even on the darker and rusty colours. Her works areas authentic and realistic as a photograph but the
author is able to catch more than the photographic lens itself. This ability of using her colours and drawings to search the purity of her still life is
Maria Claudino’s unmatched skill.
After 13 years of working in the media industry as an archivist, something happened
Painting had always been an art form that I’d been passionate about and, in 1999,
in a defining moment, I rediscovered this same art. In the throes of a catastrophe, I
decided to experiment…
The first painting was created, and then it took off…
Awaken! Discover! Attempt! …without any technical support, I’ve created numerous
Marvel
Netherlands
MARVEL, artistic name of Marianne Velzeboer, was born in Beemster, Holland, in 1951.
ART has been a leading drive in her life. She got private education in music, playing the concert organ and
piano. Moreover she developed an interest in ancient and heraldic writing, in which she started studies: Art
of Calligraphy as well as History of Script.
She became a licensed calligraphist, who extended her skills over many years, taking part in international
seminars organized by the world’s prominent professionals.
Eventually she became a master herself and started to teach people –next to music- also in this field of art, in
private as well as in public places, something she did for about 30 years.
In the course of time she found herself being inhibited in what she wanted most: working freely in art. New
ways -after beginning a new life in Portugal and some years of contemplation on how she wanted to go
on- opened up to her: as a result of her passion for calligraphy, and especially the world of illustration and
colour that is indivisibly related to it, she started to paint. She entered group exhibitions, as well as organized
individual ones in several countries. Her work is represented now in private and corporate collections. This
year a major work has been rewarded with a gold medal.
“Up against the Wind”
impressionistic self-portrait - 2008
Quoting MARVEL: ‘Painting is like enjoying or making music. I very often paint on music, led by its rhythm,
getting inspired at the mood it is provoking. I like to adapt to the vibrations of the ambient, to the movements
of the sun and the moon or the seasons.
Music, poetry, calligraphy, painting, it is all connected, all in one.’
Meliza was Born in Gondomar in Portugal in September 1946. Her
interest in art and design began in the 1970s with textile painting and
she also attended oil painting and watercolour classes in a private school
in Lisbon. Later on, in the 1990s, the development of her painting was
largely influenced by African art, mostly due to her experiences in Africa
where she lived.
Meliza put her art aside for many years, but, having retired in early 2013,
she has once again picked up her brushes and is now, using a different
Miguel Relego
Miguel Relego makes an appealing connection between painting and jazz, for although
painting is an ancient culture and jazz much more recent, it’s a subject that is frequently
portrayed.Using either black and white or strong, warm colours, Miguel turns the pleasure
of jazz music into a visual delight. Improvisation is one of the key elements which define
jazz, something which this painter also enjoys, albeit through controlled drawing and
brush strokes. The atmosphere that Miguel Relego lends to this theme is like that which
jazz gives to the listener. It’s almost as though we can hear the notes played by the jazz
musicians working as stevedores in the old ports of New Orleans.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Nicolau Campos looks to capture immortality in the figure and, by virtue of this portrayal, the immortality
of the being. Through this pursuit, he seeks to expose the base exploitation of what is represented. The simplicity of space, the direct approach and
paula_b_pereira@hotmail.com
I would say my paintings are inspired in many different cultures and my
influences are first and foremost everything I see, feel and experience
traveling, but I have always enjoyed studying the particular work of
Picasso, Klimt, Matisse, Warhol and other great Masters. In an approach
to interpreting reality, my compositions combine the eternal theme of
human figure and portraiture reconstructed with an artistic touch of
colors, lines, patterns, textures.
I like that my artistic works had the very obvious impact of inciting
people’s curiosity about the implicit narrative and immediately had
people conjuring up a mental image of something. But if I’ve made
a picture and that’s how I wanted it to be - hopefully it can speak for
itself and whatever it says to the viewer - it’s the right message because
there isn’t a wrong and a right message. I want that each person takes
something a little different from the same picture and I’m happy with
that.
Paulo Tercio
The art of Paulo Tercio expresses eternal truths and objects beyond himself. Thus to say the outcome is not only fascinating but also nothing short
of masterpieces. Tercio was born into a devout catholic family and partly draws on his troubled past for inspiration. His latest state of the art triptych
seen below comprising of Prince JB, Cousins Love Triangle and The Hyena Aunt further illustrates this disturbing period in his life. The Virgin and Child
painting seen on the next page is on permanent display at The Lady Chapel, St Andrew’s Fulham in London, UK. This exceptional achievement makes
him the first ever Portuguese artist to have a permanent display of a Virgin and Child painting in an English church.
Fashion Designer Arkadius recently quoted : Paulo’s work is outstanding, very mysterious, powerful, different, not influenced by any art trends of the
moment. The true and original language of the artist himself! Love it!
Paulo Themudo
Paulo Themudo is a sensitive artist and man of culture. Everything within
him is intuitive, balanced and courteous. Paulo is able, without straying
from the technical excellence and elegant, aesthetic experience of his
work, to focus intensely on the message he wants to deliver. He is an
artist who treads his own path, fully aware of the purpose of proclaiming
and affirming, being and expressing, experiencing and fulfilling that
which he really feels.
This artist, notwithstanding some affiliation with abstract expressionism,
doesn’t seek to mimic or follow the art of others, but rather, through the
exploration of his memories, he is able to show us a whole new universe
peculiar to him.
To talk about the public Paulo Themudo, is to speak of a creator aware of
the winds of change, never ceasing to surprise us by bringing innovation
to a world weary of marking time on a road seemingly without refuge.
We could never deny this painter and poet the uniqueness of his creative
effort. It could be argued, in a sloppy review of his work, that the very
nature of his individualism, allied with his character, is an encumbrance
to his objectiveness. However, a proper assessment of the painting of
Paulo Themudo, shows us that he is able to present to us the reality
of the present-day, without judgment and without compulsive and
exaggerated fears and expectations.
Throughout all his artistic outpourings, in both writing and painting, Paulo
Themudo transmits a message of revolution, alerting the viewer to a
tired and outdated existence that desperately needs to be deconstructed
and rebuilt based on revised expectations.
Pedro Charters d’Azevedo
Portugal
Pedro Charters d’Azevedo knows what he wants to achieve with this
theme using it in a sensitive, intelligent and balanced way to realise his
aim of instilling in us the appreciation of the peculiar things around us –
waste! Starting with this initial aim, the artist developed a way to create
awareness of the senses; sight, hearing and touch. Subsequently, he
has moved away from this principle in order to expound his boundaries
by forsaking drawing from the observation of form, light and shadow.
Instead, by developing various forms and sources of illumination,
shade, texture and movement, he encourages the viewer to look inside
himself to reflect and to build upon his artistic knowledge.
Rui Nery Monteiro
Portugal
Born in Praia da Aguda, near Porto in 1958, Rui Nery Monteiro moved to Lisbon that
same year.
At a very young age, he showed great aptitude for abstract dimensional visualisation
that later allowed him to develop his artistic skills.
In 1992, he studied with the painter Carmina Samuel, who taught him the basics of
drawing and painting. He attended her classes, building up his private collection that
he shared only with family and friends.
In 1995, he attended painting and drawing classes at the “Belas-Artes” faculty of
Lisbon, where he studied until 1998. He had the great opportunity to work with Gil
Teixeira Lopes, Manuel Botelho and other famous artists.
Even after participating in some group shows, he saw his paintings neither as a
mature statement nor as a rare emotional intelligence. His work has been unseen
publically for the last 20 years.
In his own artistic point of view, he doesn’t follow trends, fads or recognised
standards. His work isn’t made to please the eye or to embellish spaces, but is a
medium to let him express his freedom and inner thoughts.
Ruth Stirnimann
Ruth Stirnimann is an internationally renowned
artist born in Switzerland and now living and
painting in Kaikoura, New Zealand. She works
in two juxtaposing styles, each complementing
the other like yin and yang; informal abstract
paintings and geometric works. She loves to go
beyond the known, making intangible energies
tangible. She has exhibited in many cities around
the globe. Ruth’s geometric works are expressions
of the creative, harmonious vibration underlying
all life forms. She approaches her informal abstract
works with openness, following the mysterious,
creative force that flows through her. The many
layers of each painting produce a great depth and
profound harmony.
Sara Vieira
Portugal
Sara Vieira was born on May 18 th 1975, in Lisbon, Portugal. She describes herself as a young artist whose figurative work reveals an abstract universe
with a human soul. Her art has a distinctive approach with a defined personal style.
About the artist and her work, the painter and curator Jorge Rodrigues wrote: “Through her art the artist seeks her raison d’être and the visibility
of the invisible. Sara Vieira, in her artistic expression, doesn’t limit herself to brushstrokes, to gesture or to collage. All this is not enough, for it is
frequently in the words, or captions, that the story is completed as if it were a film. It is in these cinematic scenes that pop influences are evident.
The dreamy quality, the eroticism and the lyrical naivety are often sensually provocative. There are elements from the film imagery of Bergman and
Resnais, together with more painterly influences from Andy Warhol and Lichtenstein, which are noticeable in the work of this artist. This is just the
beginning; it will not end here, for the artistic world of Sara Vieira is all encompassing.”
Sarvin Haghighi
Born in Iran 1979 in the midst of the Iranian revolution, Sarvin Haghighi
experienced both great joys and harsh challenges from an early age. The
privilege and independence of her early childhood quickly gave way to
war and oppression. To fulfill the human need for self-expression, Sarvin
took to art as a young girl.
While working at her easel Sarvin captures cherished childhood
memories, honors the timeless traditions of her people, and comments
on the social, political, and cultural dimensions of women’s experiences
in contemporary Middle Eastern society.
As an adult, Sarvin has become a global citizen, leaving Tehran for Dubai
and eventually Chicago. While passion for her Persian roots provides
continual inspiration for the young artist, it is her cross-cultural exposure
that provides universal subtext to her work. From her beginning as a
single censored voice, Sarvin Haghighi’s art now amplifies the powerful
voices of many the world over who long for peace and freedom.
Human in today’s world has needs to
survive and tries to meet his needs in any
possible ways. However, if this human is
a child who needs to be held and loved
that will be a whole different matter. A
child is not capable of providing what he
needs and there should be a family to
protect and nurture him. Nevertheless,
there are children deprived from this
privilege and due to family member(s)
mental disease, addiction or poverty
these innocent children are subject to
harassment.
These little angels might occasionally be
bitten or burned by their own parents
or step parents. Children who were
brought to this world despite their will,
defenseless and vulnerable instead of
Sônia Castro
Brazil
Sônia Castro was born on July 11, 1955
in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. From an early
age she had aspirations to be an artist
and, at the age of 16, Sônia produced her
first painting, entitled “Country house
of Salvador” and participated in her first
group exhibition in the Panorama Gallery.
Her vocation, however, lay in healthcare
and she became a physiotherapist working
in a public hospital. Her familiarity with
the human form became a natural
reference for her figurative art work. Sônia
also graduated in Business Administration
and Law, going on to practise the latter.
She studied too, at the Panorama School
of Arts taking part in workshops under
Professor Euller and Waldo Robatto at
the Faculty of Fine Arts in the Federal
Maria Ernestina Bastos (Tinoh) was born in Maputo, Mozambique, in 1962. As
a victim of the process of the decolonization of Mozambique, Tinoh moved to
Portugal at the age of 14 but, even then, she knew that her African roots would
stay in her body, mind, spirit and artistic expression, forever! Since her childhood,
Tinoh has experimented with the visual arts, impressing family and friends with
her works using Styrofoam.
Her art, initially influenced by the creations of such impressionist masters as
Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh and Cézanne, has progressed to the use of an explosion
of colour and texture in order to create original pieces. Movement and liveliness
perfectly describe her paintings.
VIFER
To look at the art of VIFER, is like looking at a stage bursting with colour. His
formats and themes are multifaceted but the design and colour are always
balanced, as is the geometry throughout the various subjects that he
presents to us. I am sure that we are in the presence of a painter with an
artistic make-up that defines itself through the unusual personality of one
who is self-taught. His experience in Angola was so strong that the hot
colours remained forever etched in his psyche. To try to pigeonhole VIFER
into a particular style is wrong. Art should not come with any preconceptions
and VIFER believes in this adage, eschewing any kind of comment, for he has
nothing to lose having the creativity that many crave.
