Education Educate, Nurture, Flourish Hear about the innovative and unique approaches to learning that are being undertaken at Brookes Cambridge Brookes Cambridge is an independent day, and boarding school, that accepts boys and girls from three to 13 years old. They not only provide their students with the tools that give them confidence and a mindset to take on new challenges, but also encourage them to be open-minded, aware of cultural differences, and creative and innovative about how they approach world issues. A UNIQUE APPROACH Brookes Cambridge is a pioneering school that places the child at the heart of all they do. Through their unique ethos, which starts in their ISI “Outstanding”-rated, Montessori-accredited nursery, they inspire a love of learning through creativity and imagination. The combination of small class sizes and innovative teachers provides the catalyst for students to flourish and unlock their natural talents. During lessons they not only use imaginative activities to spark children’s inspiration but also explore links between different disciplines to develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. These connections are developed and enhanced through bespoke learning programmes that break down the artificial barriers that can exist between individual subjects. Providing the fertile soil to allow children’s potential to take root is key, as Head of School, Carole Beedham explains. “From my experiences in teaching in the UK and around the world I have learned that the most successful schools are ones that create the conditions where children will flourish and give their best. Every child is a unique individual and it is our responsibility to give them a wide range of opportunities and experiences so they can find their own successful path in life.” Each programme is multidimensional; not only do they use a kaleidoscope of subjects to bring learning to life, they venture beyond the classroom, be it excursions, performances, leading assemblies or meeting keynote speakers. Internationalism is part of their DNA and informs all subjects across their curriculum. It’s a principle that provides children with a broader understanding of today’s world. This global awareness is nurtured not only through teaching but also their family of schools that span the continents. THEIR FAMILY Brookes Cambridge is a founding member of the Brookes Education Group, which was born out of the inspiration of a small group of experienced, international educators who are passionate about sharing their vision for global education. The Brookes family currently boasts five schools located in some of the top-ranked countries for education and opportunity, which are Canada, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. In 2018, Brookes will open in Moscow, Russia and in Bangalore, India. THEIR PARTNERSHIPS Community plays an important part of school life and it is their mission to identify new and innovative opportunities to foster support and development. “To this end, we are proud of our partnership with the Fitzwilliam Museum, in which we have invested in key parts of their outreach and education work. The partnership enables the development of workshops for 11-13 year olds, innovative family trails and the ever popular ‘Fitz Kits’ that provide a selection of activities that children enjoy transporting around the galleries,” adds Carole. Education intrigues pupils. It’s an association that underlines our commitment to creativity and innovation; a statement underlined by Carole. “This partnership inspires our teachers as well as our children. To work with such an important and respected institution underlines our commitment to both the community and also to the development of a truly innovative and groundbreaking curriculum,” she says. THE CAMPUS Brookes Cambridge is set in eight acres framed by the undulating, lush Suffolk countryside. 30 minutes drive from Cambridge and five miles west of Bury St Edmunds, they provide a safe and enriching environment for children to study and play. “To open our campus to families in Cambridge, we operate a high-quality bus service from Babraham Park & Ride that provides a safe and pleasant journey to the school. Bus routes from Saffron Walden are also expected to launch in time for September,” adds Carole. THE FUTURE They have embarked on an ambitious redevelopment plan that will see their campus truly deliver 21st century schooling to all students. By September, they will unveil a £2.5 million, state-ofthe-art boarding and classroom facility that will boast modern, highly equipped art, science and computing labs as well as five-star lodging for full-time, weekly and flexi-boarders. By 2020, Brookes Cambridge will be a true ‘through school’, that will offer a complete learning experience from three to 18 years old. Children will be able to study for the IGCSE before embarking on the International Baccalaureate, a globally recognised qualification that better prepares students for life beyond the school gates. However, their ambition does not stop there, as Brookes Education Group UK Director David Rose explains: “We want to see Brookes Cambridge recognised as one of the best schools in Eastern England and for our students to benefit from the global connections that are open to them.” BOARDING Gryphon House has been designed and built to exceptional standard with all rooms boasting a full complement of modern furnishings and fittings as well as separate en-suite shower and toilet facilities. Quiet places for study along with academic support give residential students room to thrive, and social spaces and weekend excursions encourage exploration of culture and community life.
