(4) Third sounding of the drum<br />

The Master of Ceremony calls “gǔ<br />

sān yán” (“May the drum sound for<br />

the third time”). Strike the drum and<br />

bell as before, but the frame of the<br />

drum, the drum centre and the bell<br />

are struck three times at the start and<br />

finish. The musicians and ceremonial<br />

attendants prepare to take their<br />

posts.<br />

(5) Ceremonial attendants attend to their<br />

respective duties<br />

The Master of Ceremony calls “zhí shì<br />

zhě gè sī qí shì” (“May the ceremonial<br />

attendants attend to their respective<br />

duties”). Based on the pace of<br />

the ceremonial attendants, the drum<br />

sounds four times and then pauses.<br />

All ceremonial attendants follow the<br />

drumbeat in bringing the left foot<br />

together, standing upright, then they<br />

stoop to bow and stand up straight.<br />
