PRAIRIEVIEW A “good” decision by Herman Schwenk Donald Trump, in my opinion, has finally come up with a decision that makes sense. I just can’t believe how gullible the whole world has become over this business of climate change. There are 194 countries that have signed on to the Paris Climate Change Agreement. We are informed that this agreement is necessary to save the world from catastrophic climate change. Really? As I have mentioned in previous columns there is evidence from world-renowned meteorological and geological research scientists that prove carbon is not a factor in climate change. When the environmentalists and their ilk are challenged to prove that carbon emissions are the cause of climate change, their only response is to accuse you of being a climate change denier. They will not debate these scientists. The fact is they can’t prove that C02 is the cause of climate change for the simple reason that it is not. “ If rich countries were financially unstable how would they then be able to assist the nations in the underdeveloped part of the world. While I agree with Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement, it appears to me that he is doing it for the wrong reason. During the Presidential campaign he said that climate change and the agreement was a hoax but now he is suggesting his reason is because it will cost the USA too much money. The only way I can see to put an end to this nonsense is to somehow inform the world that real science [not the fake science quoted by environmentalists, media and Hollywood celebrities] has proven that climate change is natural not man-made. I think Trump is missing an opportunity to inform the world of the real reason that the Paris agreement is a hoax and a fraud. If he were to come out and state in plain English what is really going on, I don’t think the media could avoid reporting Schwenk his reason for pulling out the agreement. Trump has said the purpose of the Paris climate agreement is to redistribute wealth to countries like China, India and other developing nations. When you stop and think about it, this idea of wealth redistribution is a flawed concept. What that would do is make countries in the developed world financially worse off. Many already are. If rich countries were financially unstable how would they then be able to assist the nations in the underdeveloped part of the world? The media and the left wing environmental movement are portraying China as being a strong supporter of this climate change nonsense. This is hypocrisy in the extreme. China is the most polluted nation in the world and the pollution is not C02, it is all that other stuff that is coming out of their power and industrial manufacturing plants. They are still building and adding new coal fired generating facilities every month with old technology. It would appear that China has no intention of decreasing their C02 emissions in the foreseeable future, it is just talk. What Trump is signaling is government subsidies for renewable energy projects are over. There is nothing wrong with renewable energy but it has to compete with other forms of energy. It seems the whole world is going ballistic over the trump decision. I think there are two issues going on. The rest of the world really does think the US should finance the majority of this foolishness and the rest of the world is now becoming concerned that people might start to see through this charade. Dear Editor, I know business owners who work twice as hard as their staff and take home less, and they really cannot afford a higher minimum wage. I also know business owners who could pay more, but don’t because they don’t have to. Their staff go to the food bank while they go on expensive holidays. (Indirectly, the food bank is subsidizing their holidays, right?) If we use a higher minimum wage, greedy business owners will be forced to shape up. But the small business owners who are barely scraping by might have to close. That’s a problem. A guaranteed livable income might be the better policy. The first question is: how will we pay for it? The answer to that is actually quite easy: tax richer people and big corporations at a higher rate than low- and middle-class workers, and small businesses. Progressive income tax -- and closing the tax loopholes that allow rich people and corporations to avoid paying their fair share -- is more than enough to pay for a guaranteed livable income for everybody who needs it. An advantage for people who need help is that, instead of having to run all over the place proving that they are disabled, or poor, or running from an abusive partner, they can go to a single window where all they have to do is prove their income. Less red tape, fewer government staff and fewer people falling between the cracks. It’s not true that a guaranteed livable income is a disincentive to work. First of all, the guaranteed livable income is not a lot of money. Second, most people enjoy working. Folks on assistance report that they would like to work, at least part time, in order to afford a few extras, but cannot because then they’d lose all their benefits. With our current system, we’re robbing businesses, particularly rural agricultural and food processing businesses, of valuable workers, and the dignity and hope even a part-time job can bring. Doing nothing is not an option: automation is going to destroy a third of all jobs over the next 10 years. We don’t have a policy framework that can handle the turmoil that this will cause. We have to start talking about this, and experimenting with a variety of solutions. Meanwhile, last week in the legislature, before debate could even begin, Wildrose and Progressive Conservative MLAs voted against first reading of Bill 17. That proposed law is far from groundbreaking, and does nothing to prepare for the automation of our future. It simply ensures things like workplace leave for parents looking after kids with long-term illness, leave for women suffering from domestic violence, and ensures that people with disabilities are paid no less than minimum wage. Hardly earth shattering. So I don’t know how we are going to reconfigure our legislative framework to prepare for a very challenging future, including massive job losses due to automation, when our conservative MLAs won’t even discuss basic labour laws that are commonplace all over the civilized world. They should play politics during elections, not when there is work to be done. E C A r e v i e w C o r o n a t i o n / S t e t t l e r , A b J u n e 8 ' 1 7 7 Brownfield, White Sands to get water line The Government of Alberta announced they will provide 90-10 grant funding to extend rural waterlines to Brownfield and to White Sands on Buffalo Lake Shirley McClellan Regional Water Services Commission (SMRWSC) which is administered by the County of Stettler. More than $131 million from the Water for Life and the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership grant programs will support 29 water infrastructure projects across the province. Approved for funding are a waterline to bring water to the Summer Village of White Sands for a Reservoir/ Truck Fill Station, and a regional waterline to bring water to the Hamlet of Brownfield for a Reservoir/Truck Fill Station. The Water for Life grant provides 90-10 funding, with the province paying 90 per cent of the project cost and SMRWSC covering 10 per cent of the project cost. Approved provincial funding for the two projects equals $3,642,390. “We are extremely thankful to be receiving this funding enabling us to now provide clean, safe drinking water to the Hamlet of Brownfield and to the Summer Village of White Sands,” said Pat Gorcak, Chairperson for SMRWSC. The SMRWSC consists of 14 municipalities including the counties of Stettler and Paintearth, Special Areas Board, the towns of Castor, Coronation, the villages of Bawlf, Big Valley, Consort, Donalda, Halkirk, Rosalind, Veteran and the summer villages of Rochon Sands and White Sands. Through the Government of Alberta’s Water for Life Strategy, the SMRWSC was first able to complete Phase 1 , a 142 km pipeline taking potable water to the communities of Halkirk, Castor, Veteran, Coronation and Consort as well as the Counties of Paintearth, Stettler and Special Areas 2, 3 and 4. Phase 2 took water from Stettler to Big Valley, and Phase 3 was a waterline from Stettler to Donalda - both were completed in 2014. Rosebush Lodge Economic taskforce needs input The Economic Opportunities Taskforce (Counties of Paintearth and Flagstaff, Villages of Forestburg and Halkirk, and the Towns of Coronation and Castor) have retained the consulting services of Urban Systems Ltd. to undertake a review and analysis of the social and economic impacts expected to accrue from the potential closures of the Battle River Generating Station and Paintearth Mine. The Opportunities and Impact Study will also include thoughts and recommendations for economic revitalization and transition. A series of town hall meetings and one-on-one interviews were held in Forestburg and Castor during the week of May 15 -18. There were many things learned from the over 80 participants at the town hall meeting and the 35 interviews. The Town Hall meetings and one on one sessions were open discussion and focusing on the following: • Identification/exploration of community/regional and family impacts re: closure(s); • Identification/confirmation of community/regional assets for moving forward; and • Investigation of economic opportunities and best fit. The next steps that the Economic Opportunities Taskforce will be undertaking will include more one-on-one interview and an online survey. The Opportunities and Impact Study is on schedule with the Final Report Presentation due in Sept. 2017. For any questions, please contact your respective municipality. Theft in Erskine On the morning of May 5, two males stole a Ford 350 truck from a residence in Erskine, Ab. It is believed these same males then broke into the Erskine Grill at approximately 4:54 a.m. The males stole beef jerky, sunglasses, frozen hamburgers and home-made pastries. The vehicle was last seen departing south on Highway 835 at Erskine and later recovered in Red Deer, Ab. If you recognize either suspect or have any information regarding this matter, please contact the Stettler RCMP Detachment or Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
