members this year so far (long may it
carry on).
Just a reminder to always check your
tyres, not just on your towing vehicle
but also on your trailer as tyres do have
a habit of letting you down as they get
older. Please check the date on the
tyre as it is recommended that they are
changed after 5 years. Please remember
that they can also perish in changing
climate conditions. Finally do check that
all lights are all working.
News from the Chair
So winter’s gone, onto what we all love
doing – Camping.
Having had the Easter Rally at Melton
Mowbray it’s great to have seen and met
so many members both new and old.
There are so many old units out there
and it goes to show how good and how
long they can survive when they are
looked after.
As I have always said it is great to meet
members that have returned back to this
friendly club and be able to reminisce
about all the fun times that we have had
– there were so many. It was also good
news to hear that we have had 14 new
We want to see you throughout 2017
and into 2018 at as many rallies you can
attend.
Please remember it is your club so if you
can take on a job role or a vacant post
on the committee to allow us older ones
to step down and to get some young
enthusiasm to join us old dinosaurs it
would be really good.
It’s always good to have a new site to
attend so if you know of one and want
to have a go at marshalling get in touch
with a committee member who will help
and guide you.
That’s it for me as I am stepping down
and we need you to come and take over.
Paul Kemp
Most of you will be aware that one of our members -
Matthew Kitching - sadly lost his fight with cancer and
passed away on Thursday 6th April at 10:00pm. Matthew
was a much-loved and well-respected member of the
Conway Owners Club and will be sorely missed.
We wish his wife Alison, Tom and Isobel and all others of
Matthew’s family the Club’s sincerest condolences at this
saddest of times.
From the Secretary
Well the weather is getting warmer
and we’ve had our first trip out. It
is good to see a few rallies on the list and
of course there is room for many more.
Unfortunately due to a C~ck up and
change on a River Cruising companies
due to the first closing down we will miss
the AGM completely this year…..but we’ll
be at many of the other rallies.
It`s been good to see a few new members
joining the Club but please still keep
recruiting more as we are well down
on the membership of previous years.
However, it is surprising how many old
Conways there are about and our phone
rings regularly for advice…..it`s a shame
they are pleased by our helpfulness but
then fail to send back a membership
form. I also get lots of enquiries about
shipping Conway Units abroad, mostly to
Europe but as far away as Australia and
New Zealand. Some rules are different
for each Country but everyone requires a
Certificate from ALKO to show they have
a good chassis.
Just an important word on subscriptions,
we have a number of members who haven’t
paid their new renewal subscription of
£25……it’s not £20 anymore. Do check
your Standing Order with your bank. If
you don’t pay the extra £5 you won’t be
able to come on Rallies.
Have a great Summer and hope to see
you on a Rally.
Treasurers Report
new Conway season has now started
A and our first rally upcoming at
Sysonby Acres for the Easter weekend.
Hopefully everyone will be checking their
units in readiness for the new season.
Looking back to the year 2016, we had a
successful year financially being able to
accrue a surplus for the first time since I
took over as club treasurer. This was due
to a decrease in committee expenses
having one less meeting but in most part,
our Site Secretary Henry being able to
negotiate good deals on pitch fees for our
rallies. I hope you all agree that the pitch
fees charged were good value. We would
hope that the club be able to continue to
accrue a surplus each year but there is no
certainty that this will happen. Let’s
keep our fingers crossed! As usual, our
end-of-year accounts will be presented
to the AGM at The Lawns in May.
My thanks go to Stephen Doyle who
kindly offered his services to scrutinise
the accounts.
Unfortunately, there are still a large
proportion of the membership who
have not amended their bank mandates
to show the current rate of £25. Can I
please ask that you check your mandates
and change where necessary. We
currently have a two-tier membership
and it is not fair on those who pay the
full rate who are subsidising those who
still pay the £20. This situation will be
discussed again at the AGM with possible
sanctions for those who do not change
their mandates.
www.conwayowners.org.uk

We are getting off to a good start for the year; we have had fourteen new members
join so far and let’s hope the trend continues!
I will finish off by saying I hope this year will be as good as the last both financially,
increasing membership and lots of fun at the rallies!
Happy Camping
Allan Kynes
News from the Site Secretary
It seems very strange to be sitting here
having just come back from the Easter
Rally to realise that this will be the last
report that I write as Site Secretary as I
am definitely stepping down at this AGM.
I have been on and off the committee now
for nearly 20 years and as the Chairman
has said in his pitch its time for fresh
blood to replace us old dinosaurs.
There have been good and bad times
but overall I have enjoyed my time on the
committee. I have seen many changes
over the time but as I said before this
dinosaur needs to stand aside to allow a
new dragon to take over. Whoever takes
on the job I am willing to give them as
much help and support as possible.
But enough about what I am doing and
onto rallies. At the Easter rally we were
fully booked and it was great to see
that nearly half of the units were canvas.
Unfortunately the same cannot be said for
Cotswold View where only 3 units booked
but the site have been accommodating so
those who booked can go. One question
– why did we get so few wanting to
attend? Is it cost, distance, site etc. It is
really important to the club to know why
one rally has 20 attendees and the next 3.
It would really be appreciated if you could
email me with the reason that you did not
book as this will help with booking rallies
for next year.
The remaining rallies for the season, apart
from the AGM, are at this moment not very
well supported and it would undoubtedly
help whoever takes over if bookings can
be got in as early as possible. I am now
turning my thoughts to 2018 and starting
to get into place the main rallies but the
committee does need to know where you
would like to camp in the future and also
how we can get more members to run a
rally.
All that remains is for me personally to
say a big thank you to everyone who has
marshalled a rally and also to those who
have attended rallies and made my task
interesting.
Again thanks to the support from Pennine
Outdoor Leisure we had a small stand at
fellow club members I am accustomed to
checking on the driving regulations for
each country we are passing through. I
On a personal level
we missed the Easter
have been away on an
extended visit to the
USA (for 5 weeks – its
great being retired!)
where Anneka our
married in Las Vegas in front of the 40
friends and relatives who had made the
long journey over there – what a week
Contours
Midlands
News
The Easter rally at Melton Mowbray was
very well attended but on reflection
Easter is always a popular choice for
&
Br
most members getting out with their
units. Over the years we have been to
many different locations for Easter, and
for Melton this was our second time. And
because of its popularity we have
pencilled in a booking for next year with
Easter Sunday falling on April Fool’s Day.
Some might say that’s a bit too early but
again if you look back at the weather we
have had recently early April was warmer
then what we had during this Easter. On
the whole it was dry but there was a
7
biting cold wind blowing. Any way that’s
enough about the weather.
It was a pleasure as always to provide
some entertainment during the rally
which puts a smile on everyone’s face
and some a few bob in their pockets by
playing my crazy bingo.
Many thanks for all who attended the rally
I do hope to see you and many others
again soon at the AGM and Riddings
Wood
Oh, I almost forgot, Paul Kemp and my
quiz theme at the AGM on the Monday
evening theme is America. So please
dress appropriately, it will be a name
game quiz with a prize to the best
Chris Packington
The End of an Era -
Contours last paper edition
Over the past few years the
membership has been gradually
decreasing whilst at the same time the
cost of producing a magazine and the
postage has been increasing. During
this time the club’s finances have been
dwindling and the committee have held
numerous discussions on how to ensure
the financial future of the club. We have
been paying out around £400 for each
issue of the magazine and for a small club
with now only around 120 members this
is a huge millstone.
It was therefore decided at the 2016 AGM
that the membership would be asked on
their views about the magazine going
digital and an overwhelming majority
backed the committee’s suggestion that
this be done. It was agreed that because
of advertising we would not be able to
convert until the end of all the advertising
contracts which meant that we would
need to continue until this edition.
There are now only 1 or 2 members who
do not have access to computers of one
sort or another so in this very electronic
age this is the time for change. Of
course we will continue to provide those
members who do not have access with
paper copies but these will be printed
from the online version.
So now our thoughts must turn to how
we go about the digital version – it will still
be called Contours and will be published
in the members’ area of the website. At
this stage we are still researching which
software will be the best to use in order
to make the magazine interesting and
also to enable it to be put together easily.
Of course whether it is paper or digital,
articles will still be needed so you can rest
assured that we will be chasing as before.
All we ask now is that you bear with us
whilst we get everything sorted.
Contours
Sysonby Acres
13th - 17th April
We arrived on Thursday afternoon
to find that many members were
already set up, and so, given the option
of where we’d like to pitch we opted
for probably the more challenging one
directly behind a tree, because, you know,
why make it easy for ourselves? All I can
say is thank goodness for motor movers!
Many of the Club came to say hello as we
set up, which is the usual way of things
and several hot drinks were offered. When
we very first joined, this was one of the
reasons why we enjoyed camping with
the Club so much, everyone is so friendly
and if you need any help pitching up there
is always a steady supply of experienced
helpers at hand, and if you’re very lucky
they’ll even put your awning up for you!
Sysonby Acres has a lovely warm hall
9
available for the Club’s use so we didn’t
have to ferry our own chairs to and fro
for the evening frivolities, just our drinks
and nibbles. Thursday night saw us enjoy
a simple get together and social evening,
where it was lovely to catch up with old
friends and to meet some new people in a
lovely relaxed atmosphere.
Friday dawned and we opted to go out
exploring for the day and (having stocked
up on food and drink first) where we
found Melton Mowbray Country Park
nestled in what felt like the middle of a
housing estate. However, once parked
you couldn’t tell; we had a walk through
a wood and down to the lakes, and there
are several play areas and a small café
making it a very pleasant visit.
Friday night was Packington style
Bingo…you really have to be there to
appreciate the quirkiness of these nights
masterminded by Chris and co-hosted by
Paul. We played traditional bingo, where
Roy won the line, followed by stand-up
golf ball bingo (when your number is
called you throw your ball back into the
bucket and sit down, last man standing
wins) and finally playing card bingo
(similar format) with random spot prizes
and a cash prize for the winner. All great
fun and enjoyed by everyone, young or
old.
www.conwayowners.org.uk

Some new members really got into the
spirit of things and had had t-shirts
printed to commemorate their trip out in
their Conway Tardis.
Members only Facebook page, if you’re
not already in the group search for
Members of the Conway Owners Club
and ask to join.
On Saturday we were joined by our Son
and his girlfriend and as it was such a nice
day we went back to the Country Park
and walked around the lake, however the
typical British weather managed to catch
us in a short downpour just yards from
our car…marvellous. During the course
of Saturday I was asked to give some
snails a makeover by Chris in readiness
for their appearance on Sunday at the
Race night.
That night we had a quiz with a
difference….well, it certainly was different.
Much hilarity and confusion ensued,
much to our delight, as things didn’t go
quite according to plan. Some of the
newer members seemed very confused,
but I’m sure they enjoyed the evening all
the same, we certainly did.
On Sunday morning the Club held an
Easter Egg Hunt for the Children, and
afterwards we all headed to the Sysonby
Knoll Hotel and Restaurant, just a short
walk from the campsite, where we all
enjoyed a lovely three course meal
together. Of course when you reach
a certain age and suffer from full belly
syndrome this means that an afternoon
nap is inevitable…and very welcome it
was too.
That night Chris and Paul, with the help
of others, ran a race night. There was
the Children’s steeplechase, followed
by the Filly handicap and finally the
Stallion Steeplechase. The fence was
then dismantled and the children were
asked to find five snails…some were
slightly concerned that they may have
to handle live snails until our Race Snails
were found lurking in a store cupboard.
Once set up several snail races were held
with a great deal of noise and laughter.
as well as the Treasure hunt and winners
of the Big Easter quiz were announced.
Dave and Val Woodcock organised a
tombola stall and asked everyone to
supply an item to be included; we are
clearly a very generous bunch as the
table was heaving. The tombola raised
just shy of £70 which was split 50/50
between the Club and as a donation in
Memory of Matthew Kitching. Some of
you may know that Matthew had passed
away after a very brief fight with liver
cancer on the 6th April. His wife Alison
and I sing together as the Conway sisters
along with Mitch and others in a little
group we affectionally call The Con-
Artists. This year we will be joined by
our good friends Rhys and Amy for the
Disco night at the AGM.
Alison would like me to thank you all
for the donation in Matthew’s memory
and to thank all those who have sent
messages of love and support at what
has been a traumatic time for the family,
we really do appreciate all your kind
words.
We are hosting a meet at Lickpenny
Caravan Park near Matlock from the 20th
– 30th July, you are very welcome to join
us (just mention my name when booking
direct with the site before 3rd July). Full
Rally Report
Sysonby Acres
13th - 17th April
Our First Rally
As Kate and I had been looking at
spending time together exploring areas
of the UK, we were constantly drawn
back to the ‘good old Conway’ and
bought a Pathfinder from Pennine in
September 2016.
Kate suggested we take part in a rally,
which didn’t meet with the most positive
response from yours truly; nevertheless I
Sysonby Acres is our first rally and whilst
we had spent two nights in Accrington
(to check it out prior to a long return run
to Scotland) this gave us a chance to get
a true feel for out-door living. We also
knew a wealth of experience ‘on-site’
would be on-hand should we need any
help or guidance.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the
Sysonby Acres rally: from the warm
reception and welcome cuppa from
Jim to the evening activities bringing
everyone together.
We appreciate these events don’t
happen without a lot of behind the
scenes work and effort but rely on
supporters donating their own time to
make it a success. We hope very much
to meet you all again for the September
rally in Derbyshire.
by trees and shrubs scattered with wild meadow flowers to encourage wild life.
The plans for the meeting are slowly coming together so here are some things you
Let’s all make the effort and dress up for this show - there will be prizes for the
best costumes
• Paul and Chris are holding one of their special evenings on the Monday. It has an
American theme so what will they be wearing this time? They would much appreciate
it if the audience dressed as Americans
• Bob Kelsey will be entertaining us with a Country Night on the Wednesday evening
he would be delighted if members would dress appropriately
• The site has a new freshly stocked fishing lake
• They have a dedicated 0.5 mile dog walk.
• There is a Car Boot Sale nearby 3x a week.
• We have lots of activities running right through the week
The site is a short stroll to a couple of local tea rooms, farm shop, pub restaurant,
garden centres and many other things. Under 10 miles away from the site are 3 local
bustling market towns – Spalding, Kings Lynn and Wisbech and the Wash National
Nature Reserve. Just further afield is Peterborough, Sandringham and the seaside
resort of Hunstanton.
Driving In Europe.
What Do We Need To Know?
There’s plenty we need to know, when
driving and towing in the UK, and
hence The Definitive Guide To Towing
In The UK, however, there is even more
legislation involved with driving in
Europe, and this can change over time,
and from country to country.
• Full, current UK driving licence
* A copy of your Check Code that
replaced the paper counterpart driving
licence (If you have a post 1972 photo ID
licence)
• An International Driving Permit (if
applicable)
• Passport
• Original vehicle V5 log book
• Confirmation of motor insurance
(Insurance certificate) **
• Travel insurance documentation
• Passport
• Visa (if applicable)
These days, it isn’t just a case of shoving
on a GB sticker and hoping for the best.
Matters such as speed limits, permitted
alcohol intake, lighting requirements and
equipment levels will all have a bearing,
and must all be complied with, regardless
of what country we are touring.
However, before looking at individual
countries, we need to bear in mind
some key items of advice which will
be universal, regardless of the country
being visited.
General Advice For Driving & Travelling
In Europe
As with most things in life, it is our own
responsibility to make sure we comply
with the local laws of any country we
may visit. This is particularly important
when hiring a vehicle, as many hire
companies do not always equip their
vehicles with the requisite levels of
equipment. Nothing ruins a holiday like
a disagreement with the police, or the
confiscation of a vehicle. One of the key
laws we need to comply with is taking
the correct legal paperwork with us.
Regardless of which European country
we intend to visit, we will need to ensure
we take the following;
Note that the paper counterpart driving
licence has now been abolished , with
effect from 8 June 2015. The advice of
the DVLA is to destroy yours if you have
one but keep your photocard driving
licence.
* Note there are different rules
in Northern Ireland where the paper
counterpart is still needed.
For England, Scotland and Wales the
paper counterpart driving licence has
been replaced by an online service and
when the driver chooses to share the
information organisations will be able
to see completely accurate information
direct from DVLA’s records.
It’s very easy to view and share your
driving record. Just go to GOV.UK and
search for ‘view driving licence’. You can
view your information electronically and
generate a check code which you can
then share with people who need to see
your details (such as an employer or car
hire company). If you want to, you can
also download and print a summary.
* More information on all the changes
can be found on GOV.UK – search for ‘no
more counterpart’.
** Usually a good idea to check that
your insurance policy covers you for
foreign travel. Some companies require
notification, prior to any foreign travel, in
order to validate cover.
mind, when visiting Europe (whether
you are driving or not) is the need to
carry a European Health Insurance
Card (EHIC).
The AA produce a really useful
downloadable Summary Of Compulsory
Equipment, which covers the key items,
for each country.
These are free from the Post Office, and
entitle us to free (or, at least, reduced
cost) health care, in most European
countries.
Just bear in mind, though, that the
When travelling, anywhere, in the EU,
you will also need to display a valid GB
sticker (unless, of course, you already
have a GB Euro symbol on your number
plate). Failure to display one incurs an on
the spot fine.
With respect to drinking and driving, the
rules vary from country to country, but, if
in doubt, the simple rule is; if you’ve had
a drink, don’t drive.
Some of the penalties are extremely
punitive in some countries, and it simply
isn’t worth the risk.
Another issue common to many EU
countries is the need to carry reflective
jackets. These jackets must comply with
EU Standard BS EN 471, 1994, class 1 or
2. It is recommended that at least two
be carried, but, ideally, one for each
occupant of the vehicle. Check carefully
the requirements for the countries you
are passing through it may include
reflective warning triangles to place in
the road if you have broken down and
even, as in France, to carry your own
breathalyser kits.
In respect of towing, as opposed to
just driving, it is important to ensure
compliance with any laws appertaining
to the towing of trailers or caravans in
the EU. Current Europe wide law states
that; if your car was registered before 1
August 1998, then you are able to use a
tow bar that has been tested to BS AU
114b. Any cars that are newer than that
must meet the EU 94/20 directive.
By law, in any EU country, you need to
have an audible or visual indication that
your towing lights are working
One other thing worth bearing in
Contours
19
treatment may not be as comprehensive
as it is in the UK, in all countries, and it
doesn’t cover the cost of returning to
the UK, which is why we need to arrange
adequate travel insurance, prior to
setting out on our journey.
Remember. Wherever you are travelling
in the EU, there is one common
emergency number; 112.
In addition to these general European
guidelines there will be specific
requirements and laws for each EC
country. The AA have produced a series
of excellent guides to each country.
In addition to the AA, the Gov.UK web
site also has a comprehensive area
dedicated to Travel Abroad, covering
everything, from applying for an EHIC
mentioned above, to what to do if you
are a victim of crime abroad, or, even,
get arrested yourself.
Finally, one of the most basic pieces of
advice, is also one of the ones that most
people driving abroad fall foul of; DON’T
FORGET TO DRIVE ON THE RIGHT.
Sounds obvious, but, apparently, it isn’t!
“BEANO” - 10 June 2001 - 3 March 2017
Beano entered our lives during the August bank holiday weekend in 2001. He is
what turned out to be an expensive non bike ride in the Peak District.
We had been making enquires about having a dog. On this particular day in August
2001, we had taken some time off work to ride the Tissington Trail. Just as the bikes
were loaded onto the car, the postman arrived with information of breeders that had
got pups for sale.
We headed off towards the Peak District, and in true form of the British weather it was
raining when we arrived. What shall we do with ourselves?
Some bright spark in the car said shall we go to look at some dogs? A few phone calls
later, and we have tracked some pups down in Scunthorpe.
We headed over to Scunthorpe, and were introduced to “Trentdale Tally” Money
changed hands, and “Trentdale Tally” came home with us. Arriving back home with a
dog, and the bikes hadn’t even been taken off the car.
“Trentdale Tally” was soon renamed “Beano” after the comic. (Lyn had, had a Border
Terrier when she was younger. His name was Dandy).
“Beano” first went camping in the summer of 2005 when we purchased our Conway
Corniche. After several outings on our own we joined the Conway Owners Club.
“Beano” attended his first rally at the AGM at York in 2006. Lyn, Beano, and myself
enjoyed the rally, and as they say the rest is history.
“Beano” attended most rallies with us, but occasionally we would attend without him,
and were always asked “where is Beano?”
Most people who met “Beano” will have their own memories of his cheerful, and loving
character.
Contours
20
Unfortunately his life took a turn for the
worse in October 2015 when he suffered
a stroke. His mobility was a problem, but
he still enjoyed the camping life.
After a short illness during February 2017
took a toll on his life, and he passed away
peacefully on the 3rd March 2017.
RIP “Beano”
Gone but will never be forgotten
Further pictures of Beano will be placed in the Members’ Area on the website
bank account, inform Treasurer of what has been paid in.
Inform members by an appropriate method (email/letter/telephone) that their
booking has been received and that they have a place reserved for the rallies booked.
other duties which may from time to time be agreed by the Committee.
Promotions Officer
The post entails liaising with various organisations outside the club, as well as
committee work. Computer literacy skills are essential. In brief the post includes:-
Committee matters – attend three committee meetings a year and the AGM.
When required arrange for a marquee for the AGM.
Liaise between the committee and the producer of the magazine to ensure it is produced
on time and includes all the necessary reports and the correct advertisements. The
timing of the magazine before the AGM is particularly important.
Members Insurance.
Liaise with Pennine Outdoor Leisure and the Pennine Owners Club.
NEC Shows. When space can be found for the club at the show arrange for the club
to be represented and ensure that promotional material is made available.
Arrange for the production of and upkeep of the club website – this could be carried
out by another person or organisation.
Regional Co-ordinators
The Regional Co-ordinator is responsible for the co-ordination of activities in their
defined area ensuring that rallies/gatherings do not clash. They will also work with the
adjacent co-ordinator to ensure there is no unwarranted overlap between areas. They
should liaise with the Site Secretary regarding rallies in their area. They are expected
to promote the view from the field of members at committee meetings. Their role is to
ensure the activities of the Club in their area are carried out to the current Club Rules
and to carry out any other duties that are passed by the committee associated with
the position. Storage of the regional party tent and arrangement of its movement
between rallies may also be necessary. The co-ordinator should therefore have
sufficient time and skills for this position and be able to attend three Committee
meetings a year to represent the area concerned.
Do think seriously about coming on the Committee we need people to come forward/
be nominated. We need a Committee to run the club, sort out the rallies and discuss
our survival and the future. Apart from the AGM we only meet a couple of times
during the year and all expenses are paid. We do need to fill these vacant positions.
Please ask any current or past Committee member if you have questions about the
vacancies.
Minutes of the 2016
Annual General Meeting
Held at the Lower Lacon Caravan Park, Soulton Road, Wem, Shropshire.
SY4 5RP on Sunday May 29th 2016 at 4.00pm
1.Chair’s address and welcome
Paul Kemp, the Chairman of the Club, warmly welcomed everyone to the 2016 and
said he was pleased to see the many people gathered and especially those who had
not been to an AGM for a while. He thanked those who helped arrange the AGM and
especially the marshals who had been doing a splendid job getting people settled.
2. Apologies for absence.
These were received from Dave and Val Woodcock, Dale Parker, Deb and Tony
Campbell and Pete and Lyn Garlick.
3. Minutes of the 2015 AGM
Acceptance of the minutes and their accuracy was proposed by John Rothery and
seconded by Paul Griffiths and unanimously accepted by those attending
4. Matters Arising.
None specific that were not on the Agenda
5. Treasurers Report
Allan Kynes presented his written report. He started by thanking Alan Wismann for
volunteering his time to scrutinise the club’s annual accounts. He said the balance
sheet as of 31st December 2015 shows that we have assets amounting to £4,752.62
from all bank accounts and petty cash. This is a fall of £324.97 from the previous year
2014.
Site fees income for all rallies and the AGM (after deduction of refunds) amounted to
£8,264.90 as opposed to £10,034 for the year 2014 – a drop of £1,7691.10. Advertising
was up and he thanked Tony Burrett for this. He said even though smaller numbers
attended rallies throughout 2015, the club managed to make a profit from rallies
of £775.55 as against a profit of £195.33 for 2014. This was due to the negotiating
skills of our Site Secretary Henry Richbell. The finances of the club are in decline
and will continue to do so as membership is falling, income is decreasing and costs
are gradually rising, all leading to a position where, if we don’t act, to the eventual
collapsing of the club. He put that into context: The Annual membership fees go
towards the management of the club and other expenses. If we peel away all other
income from our annual income (2015) and look how the club fared, he said we can
see the large management deficit we are accruing year-on-year: Although the deficit
is smaller than that of 2014, the trend is still the same in that the club is losing money
year-on-year.
He reminded members that an increase in fees to £25 a year had been agreed
unanimously without dissent at the 2015 AGM with an effective date of January 1st
2016 but despite that some members were still paying the lower rate.
6. Secretary’s Report.
Steve Miller first informed the meeting that Marion Templeton had very kindly agreed
to be the Club’s Membership Secretary and would in future be responsible for keeping
the membership database up to date and deal with all membership issues including
reminders and renewals. Steve said he was grateful for this offer to take on the task
and it would mean that he could more promptly deal with telephone enquiries and
other matter of the Secretary’s Post.
Steve’s main concern was the falling in membership numbers which could in time
challenge the club’s viability. There were a few members paying at an old rate of £15
but they had not responded to any reminders and did not receive copies of Contours.
This is also happening with many members this year not increasing their standing
orders from £20 to £25 and they will be chased up. Steve said that of course the bill
for magazines had dropped but the unit cost per issue was much higher. There was a
long discussion on the Magazine and its viability for the future and perhaps the use of
an e-magazine instead could be considered. This was agreed and this needed to be
discussed at length at the next committee meeting.
Steve also talked about the use of Facebook as a way of attracting new members to
the Club. He stated that we had now nearly 500 Facebook members drawn by the
ease of posing and answering questions and also showing the fun they have with the
club or just with the club at rallies. Not everyone is a fan of Facebook but building on
its popularity it could replace the Forum on the Club site. The Forum is for a number of
reasons unavailable at times, particularly in the evening. The Forum, Steve suggested,
could be a separate Facebook Page just for fully paid Members. The AGM agreed
that this should be discussed by the Committee at its next meeting. The annals of the
current Forum would be available to all members.
7. Site Secretary’s Report
Henry Richbell spoke to his written report. He said he was disappointed with the
numbers of people attending rallies and also in the members of rallies taking place.
The Committee had discussed the problem of rallies he said that in future years the
Regional Co-ordinators will assist in identifying sites for rallies and look for the Rally
Marshalls, This would be primarily in the North and South Regions. He suggested that
Camping and Caravanning Club Sites were difficult for the Club as minimal numbers
are required and often the club could not make these numbers or the price of the
pitches increased to a high price due to diminished attendees. The Committee had
discussed other alternative type of rallies such as used by C&CC and Caravan Club
but they often do not appeal to all. There was a long discussion on this and members
were fully engaged to give suggestions for the Committee to look at.
8. Election of Committee Officers - the Secretary informed the meeting that
there had been no persons proposed for the vacancies.
a) Site Secretary - no persons volunteered for the Post. Henry Richbell agreed to
continue but for one year only
b)Treasurer. Steven Doyle offered his services for the post with Allan Kynes assisting
him in taking over the post. Proposed by Paul Masters and seconded by Kath Prince.
c) Southern Co-ordinator – Dawn Masters volunteered to cover this but would not be
able to attend Committee meetings.
9. Items for Discussion
i) Mrs Doyle the meeting informed that the Barmouth Rally was cancelled due to lack
of interest.
ii) Use of Solar Power was discussed for future rallies where non electric
iii) Plea from many for better advertising of rallies and publicised asap
iv) Melton Mowbray Rally in Spring 2017
v) Wish for Committee to look at future of Contours as a hard copy and use of emag.
vi) AK mentioned need for a unilateral password and username in the future
The meeting finished at 5.45
