WELCOME TO DOVERCOURT’S FALL <strong>2017</strong> PROGRAMS!<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation Association (DRA) is a not-for-profit charitable organization with the mission of<br />

building a healthy, active and engaged community through recreation. While we are part of the City of<br />

Ottawa’s recreation system, DRA is empowered to choose what programs it runs to meet the community’s<br />

needs, and how those programs are delivered. Our motto is “a community working for the community,<br />

une communauté qui travaille pour la communauté”. Staff, volunteers, clients, local community groups and<br />

SWIM LESSONS<br />

Why take swimming lessons<br />

at <strong>Dovercourt</strong>? <strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s<br />

highly-skilled instructors are<br />

able to teach children proper<br />

technique efficiently and<br />

effectively, in accordance<br />

with the high standards of the<br />

Lifesaving Society. Our end-ofsession<br />

Survival Day is unique<br />

to <strong>Dovercourt</strong> and is a fun yet<br />

powerful way to teach children<br />

skills that could save their lives<br />

in real-life scenarios. Our staff<br />

undergoes extensive training<br />

and regular updates on safety,<br />

rescue situations, changes to<br />

current standards, as well as<br />

techniques for teaching. Many<br />

of our senior aquatics staff<br />

are instructor and lifeguard<br />

trainers and are a valuable<br />

resource for our aquatics team.<br />

Our leisure pool is designed to<br />

teach swimming, with unique<br />

features like warmer water, a<br />

beach entry, rope swing and<br />

shallow & deep water pods.<br />

THE SWIM FOR LIFE®<br />

PROGRAM<br />

Basic swimming ability is a<br />

requirement of any meaningful<br />

attempt to eliminate drowning<br />

in Canada. Swim for Life®<br />

is a comprehensive swim<br />

instruction program that<br />

focuses on the acquisition and<br />

development of fundamental<br />

swim strokes and skills for<br />

learners of all ages and<br />

abilities. Learning Swim to<br />

Survive® skills and achieving<br />

the Lifesaving Society’s Swim<br />

to Survive® Standard are key<br />

foundations of the Swim for<br />

Life® <strong>Program</strong>.<br />

LIFESAVING PARENT & TOTS<br />

A rewarding experience for<br />

adults with infants or toddlers.<br />

These levels introduce the joys<br />

of water activity while stressing<br />

parental responsibility in, on<br />

and around the water. Parent<br />

participation required, but just<br />

one “water loving” parent is<br />

permitted in the pool due to<br />

our limited pool space. Class<br />

length: 30 minutes.<br />

12 months old and under (able<br />

to hold head up) with parent or<br />

PRESCHOOL A TRANSITION<br />

Your child is “almost” ready<br />

participate on their own and<br />

PRESCHOOL CLASSES<br />

All Preschool classes are<br />

unparented and for 3-5 year<br />

old children.<br />

PRESCHOOL A<br />

Prerequisites: For kids 3-5<br />

years old just starting out on<br />

their own, with little or no<br />

experience but comfortable in<br />

a class without mom or dad.<br />

PRESCHOOL B<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can<br />

comfortably move and float<br />

with aid and put their faces in<br />

the water with eyes open and<br />

exhale in a relaxed manner.<br />

PRESCHOOL C<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can<br />

float on front and back in PFD<br />

without assistance; swim 5m<br />

on front and back any way with<br />

an aid; and exhale under water<br />

3 times without pause.<br />

PRESCHOOL D<br />

Prerequisites: Participants<br />

can float and move in deep<br />

water with assistance; breathe<br />

rhythmically 5 times; flutter<br />

kick while gliding on front and<br />

back 5m; recover objects from<br />

the bottom.<br />

PRESCHOOL E<br />

Prerequisites: Participants<br />

are comfortable jumping into<br />

deep water unassisted; front<br />

and back float in deep water<br />

unassisted; kick on front and<br />

back for 7m each; 5m of<br />

continuous front crawl with aid.<br />

SCHOOL AGE SWIM LESSONS<br />

SWIMMER 1 - BEGINNER<br />

Just starting out with little<br />

or no swimming experience.<br />

Lessons will focus on floats<br />

and glides, flutter kick, shallow<br />

and deep-water comfort,<br />

movement through water, safe<br />

entries and PFDs.<br />

SWIMMER 1 - ADVANCED<br />

Prerequisites: Have attempted<br />

Swimmer 1 before and/or are<br />

comfortable submerging their<br />

face with eyes open. Class will<br />

focus on unassisted glides and<br />

kicking drills.<br />

SWIMMER 2<br />

Prerequisites: Jump into chest<br />

deep water; open eyes and<br />

exhale under water; front/back<br />

float unassisted; flutter kick on<br />

workouts and 300m timed<br />

swims.<br />

respond to increasing complex<br />

Drop the kids off with us for an exciting evening for<br />

them and a night out for you. We’ll start the night off<br />

with programmed water activities and a swim in the pool<br />

between 6:30-7:30pm. Next we move to the program<br />

room for a healthy snack and a wide range of quieter<br />

activities designed to wind down the night and get ready<br />

for bed. Drop off is between 6:00-6:30pm, and pick up is<br />
