SHOWSTOPPER
MEET MARILYN: The biggest plane at last weekend’s airshow was this Douglas DC-3 Dakota. First built in 1944 for use in the US Air Force, she then served the Royal Air Force, the SA Air Force and the
Department of Transport as a civilian aircraft before going to the Democratic Republic of Congo. She was named Marilyn in 2007 and in 2011 sold to a private owner. She still does regular freight runs
LONGAMO GUMEDE
Police probe
student death
BHONGO JACOB
HITTLESEA police are
investigating a case of
Wmurder after a second-year
Walter Sisulu University student,
Longamo Gumede, was stabbed to
death in extension two in Sada on
Fr i d ay.
Gumede, 21, who was originally
from Mzimkhulu in KwaZulu-Natal,
was allegedly approached by two
men at about 8pm and stabbed to
death, police spokeswoman
Captain Namhla Mdleleni
confirmed this week.
Police are investigating a case of
murder but no arrests have been
made.
Mdleleni said the motive for the
killing was not known.
Gumede’s friend Innocent
Ngcambelo said he was stabbed
while walking with his girlfriend.
“He was going to town from the
township. When this happened, he
was being mugged and he told his
girlfriend to run. She came and told
us what had happened and we
rushed there.”
He said when they arrived on the
scene, Gumede was still alive.
“The ambulance came later and
the paramedics treated him
outside. I asked them to put him

inside the ambulance because it
was very cold and they told me to
keep quiet because they knew what
they were doing.”
He said Gumede was a dedicated
student who was studying towards
a Bachelor of Education degree.
WSU spokeswoman Yonela
Tukwayo confirmed the incident,
saying the student was stabbed
outside the campus.
“We received a report from our
student affairs section that the
incident happened outside the
university. We do not investigate
things that happen outside campus
because the student was not under
our care at the time of the
incident.”
A memorial service for Gumede
was held yesterday.
In a separate incident, police
arrested a 23-year-old man on a
charge of murder in Komani over
the weekend.
Mdleleni said, “It is alleged that
the victim, 21, was with the suspect
on their way home from a tavern
when they had a quarrel. The victim
was stabbed to death.”
The suspect appeared in the
Komani Magistrate’s Court on
Monday and was remanded in
custody to allow for a bail
Watchers recover system
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
THE despair of a Komani church
which found itself without a
sound system last week, was
short-lived due to the assistance
of the Isolomzi Neighbourhood
T h u r s d ay.
Church member Mfundo
Mdleleni said, “We open the
church every day during the
week, but on Thursday we
noticed the equipment was not
there. The thieves managed to
break in through a door.”
The missing mixer and
amplifier were found by the
Watch members on Saturday
and information was received
from a member of the public.
The police took three suspects
– men aged between 18 and 23
– into custody.
Thief demands return of his loot
A MAN who allegedly stole a tyre from an
Avanza in the Komani CBD tried to
demand the tyre back from Red Guard
response officers last week.
Operations manager Willie Reynecke
said response officers had seen the man
pushing the tyre. He allegedly ran away
when he saw the response officers, but
returned shortly afterwards, demanding
the return of the tyre. He was handed over
to the police.
The owner of a Komani shop was
assisted after he was robbed of his cell
phone and money. The response officers
accompanied him to the police station to
open a case.
Mapaila lambasts corrupt MPs
ZOLILE MENZELWA and
SIVE GOSA
PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has to help the
ANC and resign and so help to save the
party and assist the party’s alliance
partners, SACP and Cosatu, SACP second
deputy secretary-general Solly Mapaila
said at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports
Complex on Sunday.
Mapaila was addressing the Elijah
Barayi Memorial Lecture. Barayi was a
deputy president of the National Union of
Mineworkers in 1982 and the first Cosatu
president in 1985.
Mapaila, a known Zuma critic, said
Barayi would wave a finger in the air to
make a point when he spoke of
wrongdoing.
“Today Barayi would wave that finger
and tell Zuma to resign. Any revolution
that takes itself seriously, addresses
poverty and inequality. Any government
that cannot deal with these two challenges
cannot live long,” he said to applause.
Mapaila said the current economic
system was not favouring poor people.
“The ANC is not a Zuma or a Gupta
par t y,” he said to cheers and loud
applause.
He said the aim of the ANC was not to
make individuals rich, but to get people
out of poverty, adding Barayi was a
selfless intellectual who had wanted to
serve the people. Selflessness had to be
restored in the ANC.
Mapaila said Barayi and Deputy
President Cyril Ramaphosa had changed
the face of unionism when they led unions.
Capitalists were stealing government
money and capitalism and corruption had
to be destroyed.
“Some people want the Guptas to run
this country. There are ministers who are
controlled by them,” he said to applause.

Fellow church member
Boocker Gusha said it would be
good for government to invest in
rehabilitating such people.
“We need to get to the root
cause of the problem. Isolomzi
is there to prevent crime, but we
need to go deeper because if
they do not get out of this type
of mindset, they will continue
committing criminal acts.”
Resident Dolly Caleni said the
neighbourhood watchers were
doing a great job by keeping an
eye on what was happening
around the community.
“If something is stolen, they
are the first to come to assist
the victim, that is why I
appreciate their work.”
Police spokeswoman Captain
Namhla Mdleleni confirmed the
recovery of the stolen items by
community members. A case of
housebreaking is under
STRAIGHT TALK: At the Elijah Barayi
lecture, the SACP’s Solly Mapaila said
the time for corrupt leaders was
over
Present were Barayi’s granddaughter
Lizeka Barayi Sitosha, social development
MEC Nancy Sihlwayi and ANC regional
chairwoman and CHDM mayor Kholiswa
V i m b ay o .
“The rot in the ANC is embarrassing and
there is chaos because of Zuma. Why
should the movement kill itself because of
one man?”
He said the acceptance of corruption
would destroy the country. ANC members
must build strong structures that would
hold its leadership accountable. The
alliance was not working correctly as Zuma
no longer respected alliance partners.
“We want ANC officials we can trust. We
told Zuma not to fire [former finance
minister Pravin] Gordhan and [his deputy
Mcebisi] Jonas. We do not want
government to become an ATM for
individuals. Do not be afraid to talk about
Zuma.”
The event was organised by the alliance
partners in the region, Cosatu regional
chairman Mongameli Mancam said.

NUM man opts
for Ramaphosa
SIVENATHI GOSA and
ZOLILE MENZELWA
THE Guptas had destroyed the mission and
vision of the ANC and people had to take a
stand to resurrect the party they know and
love.
So said National Union of Mineworkers’
(NUM) health and safety secretary Eric
Gcilitshana, who also called on President
Jacob Zuma to step down, in his message
at former Cosatu president Elijah Barayi’s
memorial lecture at Thobi Kula Indoor
Sports Complex.
Gcilitshana called on people to follow in
Barayi and Chris Hani’s footsteps to
promote a better South Africa.
“Let us strengthen the unity of the ANC,
Cosatu, NUM and SACP. We must make
sure we fight and unite against corruption
as we do not want to speak about this
leadership in the past tense in the near
future, but in the present.”
He said the country must remove itself
from the “Gupta dictatorship” by first
removing “the president of the ruling party”.
He said Cyril Ramaphosa was ready to be
the next president of the country and he
was capable and trustworthy.
“Some people may be against him,
saying he is a capitalist, but we believe
South Africa can progress under his
leadership.”
CHDM mayor Kholiswa Vimbayo said the
region was willing to work with the union to
ensure the political state of the country did
not worsen.
“We need to come up with solutions.”
A man who was allegedly seen stealing
iron bars from a local business was
apprehended last Thursday and handed
over to the Mlungisi police.
CHDM tells hawkers to make other plans
BHONGO JACOB
HAWKERS selling meat and corn in the
Komani CBD have been given seven days to
vacate the area where they are working or to
find alternative options to prepare their food.
This stern warning came from Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM) officials who went on
another public health campaign in the town last
T h u r s d ay.
The Rep reported (“CHDM seizes meat in CBD”,
March 17) that raw meat prepared and sold on the
streets of Komani was confiscated from hawkers
by inspectors who indicated that the necessary
hygiene was not being applied in terms of storing
and preparing the meat.
This week, the inspectors spoke to hawkers who
were making fires in town to prepare their meat.
An official, who did not want to be named, said
people who made fires to prepare food for sale,
were on the increase in Komani.
“People cannot just come to town and start
making fires. We are asking them nicely to
extinguish their fires and we will come back in
seven days’ time to check on what they have done.
Some of these small businesses are next to petrol
pumps at garages and it is dangerous to have a
fire in those areas, even if it is small fire.”
He said the municipality would take “fur ther
action” against hawkers who chose not to comply,
but would not elaborate on what the action would
be.
A hawker, who identified himself only as “Sasa”,
said selling lamb livers was his only livelihood.
“I have been working in this area for some time. I
can move to another place if they want me to stop
working next to the garage, but I know someone
will come and occupy this spot if I leave.”
Hawker Nosibulelo Dyantyi said the CHDM
officials needed to assist them to find better ways
of continuing with their businesses.
“We are not fighting against the laws of the
government, but they will never confiscate my
food. This is my business.”
She said the hawkers made fires in a braai
stand and used gas stoves to prepare food.
“How do they think I will sell my corn? My
customers want it cooked. I have been working
from this area for three years and no one has ever
told me anything about the fire being a danger.”
The mother of six said her family would suffer if
she had to move.
“Besides my own children, I also support two of
my sisters’ children and my husband is
unemployed, so I have no other means to create
an income. The municipality must come up with
solutions. They must stop looking down on
hawkers because they think they are educated and
have fancy jobs in their offices.”
CHDM spokesman Thobeka Mqamelo said the
district authority was doing routine inspections of
food premises as required by law.
“One of the awareness campaigns identified
dangerous practices such as the widespread
making of fires in public places by hawkers.”
She said this posed a danger to the
environment, especially during windy periods.
“While the district supports all business
initiatives, including those undertaken by
emerging businesses, we encourage that all
practices should be conducted within the
parameters of the law.”
EFF MP calls for service answers
ZOLILE MENZELWA
EFF MP Zolile Xalisa has
castigated the Enoch Mgijima
Local Municipality (EMLM) for
allowing the people of Unathi
Mkefa in Ezibeleni to live in the
dark and without water while, he
said, crime spiralled out of
cont rol.
In a letter from Xalisa, who is
originally from Ezibeleni, he said
he had taken up related concerns
with EMLM executive mayor
Lindiwe Gunuza Nkwentsha and
technical services portfolio head
Sibusiso Mvana, but to no avail.
He accused Mvana of ignoring
his calls about electricity outages
in Unathi Mkefa which were
leading to water outages as the
pumps required power to operate.
“There was a power outage
from June 15 and after I raised
concern about the matter, power
was restored on June 18. There
was another outage on June 20.
This is not an isolated incident as
this has been happening since I
can remember,” Xalisa said.
He said the situation showed
the municipality had created a
state of emergency and was
forcing the community of Unathi
Mkefa to relieve themselves in
the bushes.
“We lose our electrical
appliances with the outages, the
food we work hard to buy and
store in our refrigerators becomes
rotten, and crime thrives.”
Xalisa said students who
wanted to study at night suffered
as there was no electricity.
“EMLM seems not to care and
is rather indifferent about the
difficulty felt by our people.”
Xalisa said there were more
outages than power in the area.
“I cannot help but wonder what
happens in the planning stages in
those municipal offices, who
plans what and how they plan it.”
It would be difficult to attract
investors from out of town when
basic services such as water and
electricity could not be provided.
He said the “sheer
incompetence of the people put in
power” was proving to be a
challenge.
“We will not leave our town
because of your lack of planning
and your incapacity. The
community must stand up against
this and demand answers.”
EMLM communications
manager Fundile Feketshane had
not responded to questions
e-mailed to him on Tuesday at the
time of going to print.
Protest put
on back
bur ner
BHONGO JACOB
THE service delivery
protest in Dordrecht has
been put on hold to
allow the municipality
to respond.
The Rep reported
(“Sanco leads delivery
p r ot e st s ”, June 16) that
tyres were set alight in
the CBD as residents
gathered for a service
delivery protest outside
the Emalahleni
municipality offices last
week.
South African
National Civic
Organisation (Sanco)
Dordrecht chairman
Luyanda Saleni said this
week they had decided
to put the protest on
hold following a
meeting with Dordrecht
mayor Nomveliso
Nyukwana on Tuesday.
Sanco is protesting
the alleged abuse of
power, including claims
that employment was
based on political
connections, at the
municipality. Last week,
residents packed the
municipal offices,
demanding answers.
“The mayor finally
came to listen to our
grievances. We briefed
her about our problems,
which have been
growing and not
attended to since last
year. We also discussed
the issue of nepotism in
the municipality.”
He said they had
given the municipality
two weeks to respond
to the allegations.
“We understand that
these are still
allegations and the
mayor said she would
meet the executive
committee and table
our issues so we will
wait for that report. We
will get feedback by the
second week of July.”
He said ongoing
power outages had
angered residents of
Tyoksville township.
“We have asked the
mayor to regard the
electricity issue as a
matter of urgency.
Students are finding it
hard to study and the
crime level is going up.”
Municipal spokesman
Luthando Nqumkana
said the municipality
had developed a data
base for unemployed
people for employment
in short-term projects.
“When there are
vacancies on the
municipalit y
organogram we
advertise those
positions in the
newspapers, on our
noticeboard and other
public places for
internal staff as well as
members of the public.”
A total of 2000
houses in Tyoksville
were being renovated,
with the area under
const ruction.
“We assist to remove
the meter boxes when
the house is due for
rectification. What we
have identified is that
there are illegal
connections.
Unfortunately we have
to deal with that. In
most cases we had
already engaged with
the house owners and
listened to their plea,
but there is nothing
much we can do except
to apply the law.”
He said refuse was
collected once a week
in all areas.
ON THE COURT: Tarkastad was a hive of activity on Youth Day, with various netball and soccer
teams from surrounding areas descending on the town to play matches. Activities were arranged
by Tarkastad Youth United in Development, which kicked off as early as Tuesday, as well as the
DA, who held netball matches at Tarka High School
they did not like the area which will
SCHOOLS in Sterkstroom and Molteno are
making music, courtesy of the investment of
time and skill by the Field Band Foundation
(FBF).
The FBF is a non-profit organisation
established a decade ago to bring the global
performance band concept to disadvantaged
areas of South Africa and develop an
indigenous variant of this performance type.
Programme officer Thabo Mapholo said
their mission was to improve the quality of life
of disadvantaged youngsters and give them
an opportunity for a better future.
“Through music and movement, members
take part in positive, joyful and affirming
activities that teach them life skills and
develop their imagination, team spirit and
self-discipline.”
The main purpose is to develop positive life
skills in young people, using the mediums of
music and dance.
“In Sterkstroom, we are working with
The Rep reported (“Rural school
short of classrooms”, February 17)
that Mzamomhle was experiencing a
shortage of classrooms after two
temporary structures caught alight
during the Easter holidays. As a
result, some of the pupils have had
to attend classes in the open air.
Zoya said apart from the poor
conditions at Mzamomhle, pupils
from Phakamani would have to wake
up in the early hours to travel to
Hekeni village.
“The kids have to wake up at 4am
because the transport leaves at 6am.
We are concerned with the pass rate
if things continue unchanged. Our
Usenathi Primary School and in Molteno,
Nceba Primary School,” Mapholo said.
“Through FBF activities, young people are
taught life skills that will affect their lives as
they grow up – like commitment,
competitiveness, teamwork, discipline and
timekeeping. The advantages of heightened
self-esteem and associated self-confidence
are instilled.”
The foundation has 48 field bands, each
usually consisting of 137 members, aged
seven to 21 years, in all provinces. Band
membership is free and last year membership
was more than 6 500.
“Interaction between children from different
racial, linguistic and cultural groups happens
through regional and national competitions
and also through advanced training
workshops,” Mapholo said.
The foundation is funded through South
African corporate support, taxpayers (the
Department of Arts and Culture) and
international support from partners in Europe
and the US.
school always had a good pass rate
and now we fear that it will drop.”
Meanwhile, Phakamani High
School had been left unused for most
of the year.
Zoya said the building was
attracting unwanted elements to the
village. “That is a newly built school.
It is beautiful with a face brick facade
and now it is becoming a place for
people to smoke at while our children
are studying in a mud school.”
He said parents wanted the pupils
back at Phakamani when schools
re-open next term.
School governing body (SGB)
member Vulelo Ncitha said they were
engaging with the department.
“It would be better to have the
children back. Most parents want it
because everyone is worried about
the results the children will produce
at the end of the year with all these
challenges.”
Education department district
director Nkosinathi Godlo said a
meeting with the SGB was held on
Tu e s d ay.
“There is a shortage of teachers
and the school numbers are low. We
intend to combine three schools in
the area. We are negotiating because
we need schools to be combined to
make up one viable school.”
Growing field band movement adds harmony
EDITORIAL
OPINION
Find solutions
for the sake
of empathy
HE Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM)
recently took to the
Tstreets of Komani to
warn hawkers about the
dangers of cooking on the
streets and of not applying
the necessary hygienic
measures when dealing with
raw meat for sale.
The problem is manifold.
The CHDM has a
responsibility to ensure legal
and safe trade while also
promoting job creation and
the entrepreneurial spirit.
The hawkers are just trying
to survive and to support their
families while making do with
the bare minimum of
resources. They’re doing what
they know – cooking – and
regulation of such a practice
may sound like a threatening
proposition to their livelihood.
The CBD needs to be clean
and orderly in order for the
local authorities to promote
growth. Finally, the dangers of
fires in the CBD and the real
threat of selling raw meat in
unhygienic conditions to
members of the public could
be hazardous to public health
and safety.
So, what do we do? There
has to be options which will
work for everyone involved.
The creation of a central
market where foodstuffs can
be sold and which will be
monitored by health
authorities may just be the
start of something bigger.
What about finding a
central location where the
necessary resources are
supplied, such as power and
water at a cost to the tenants
of hawking stalls, thereby
creating a “food village” fo r
shoppers and town visitors.
If provincial or national
funding can be sourced, such
a village could grow to
include handmade goods from
the area – from clothing to
jewellery – and eventually the
inclusion of local
entertainment acts to form a
tourism hub which could
boost the profile of Komani
greatly. It may seem like a
pipe dream for now, but if we
could make it happen,
consider the benefits: a more
orderly CBD, a chance to
prosper for the hawkers in a
safer and more secure setting
and an opportunity for CHDM
to contribute positively to the
economy while promoting a
major driver thereof –
tourism.
What’s in a name?
CONTRARY to what many might
think about social networks, I find
them informative and sometimes
come across interesting topics.
On Tuesday I saw a piece by
Tsepo Moerane, who is active in
the tourism sector. He posted,
”The town name has been changed
and gazetted, but nothing is
happening on the ground
regarding implementation.”
I looked out for the signs that
indeed the town was no longer
Queenstown, but Komani.
IN
TOUCH
... with Phumelele P Hlati
Apart from this newspaper and
the weather report on eTV, where
else is the name change
implemented? I am sure whoever
drives around town is confused
as everywhere you look
Queenstown is still used. When
you come into town it says,
“Welcome to Queenstown”.
Then the official
correspondence of the Enoch
Mgijima Municipality, which is
supposed to do the name change:
when I first tried to find its
website, I searched in vain. It was
only when I typed “Lukhanji
Municipalit y” that I got anywhere.
When will they wake up? Why
did they bother going through the
change if it was simply left in the
government gazette and not
implemented? It is as if the name
change never happened. Which
name must residents write as our
addresses? Komani or
Queenstown? If I use Komani will
my letters arrive or get lost?
If a traveler looks up the
weather forecast prior to coming
to our town, what does he look
for? I saw a job advert for the
Enoch Mgijima Municipal
Manager post, closing January
20, 2017. Guess what, the
address was Queenstown.
I am told this issue never
came up in a council meeting
since the amalgamation, so in
effect to this newly elected
council this is a non-issue.
Maybe I am being unfair to the
municipality. These are the same
people who closed down the
busiest section of the busiest
street in the whole town, Victoria
Road, from June 25 last year to
today to do paving, and the
“repair of damaged services”.
This job, as per their notice was
to start on June 25 last year and
end on March 31 this year. This is
the same municipality which has
failed to fix robots in many parts
of the town and has failed to fix
the plethora of potholes all over
town. Basically, the town is falling
apart, yet we expect them to
implement the name change?
I guess their attitude is: What’s
in a name? Pathetic!
YOUR VOICE
... vox pops on the street
with chairwoman of the Rise Young Women’s
Club in Komani – Siyamthanda Ndlela Maposa
Question: What motivates you to
chase your dreams?
Answer: I like seeing all the
successful young black women in
South Africa, women who are
making things happen for
themselves.
Q: What is the one thing without
which you cannot leave home?
A: My phone. It is everything to
me.
Q: Do you think the youth is lazy
or misunderstood and why?
A: The youth of South Africa are
very lazy. We expect everything to
be brought to us on a silver platter.
We are given opportunities, which
other people never had, but we are
taking them for granted. We have
access to free education, but most
of the youth do not make use of it.
They do not want to be
ent repreneurs. With all the great
opportunities we have, most of the
youth are supposed to be at school
or at work, but it is the opposite.
There is a high rate of involvement
in crime and drug abuse.
Q: What are you listening to?
A: I am currently listening to
Zonke Dikana’s track called
Ngomso. That track keeps me
going.
Q: What do you like about
Ko m a n i ?
A: Komani is a lovely, small,
quiet town compared to my home
town, Mthatha. As small as it is,
it’s easy for people to be
recognised.
Komani does not have a high
crime rate, I can do anything
freely. I like the beauty of the town,
and the mountains surrounding
it. Every morning, I wake up
and look at these beautiful
mountains.
Q: What is the biggest problem
for South Africa currently?
A: The killing of women and
children is the biggest problem we
are facing. Without women and
children, this country is nothing.
Children are the leaders of
t o m o r r o w.
Q: Do you think SA is ready for a
young president, and why?
A: Yes, with all the problems we
are facing we need someone young
with a fresh mind to lead us. Old
people are now failing in the
leadership positions, their minds
are tired.
Q: What is the one thing you do
every day?
A: I read novels before I go to
bed.
Q: With all the negativity in the
country, what do you think
needs to happen to make South
Africa a happy place?
A: We actually need to have a
new, young, honest and educated
president who can resolve all the
problems we are facing in the
countr y.
What do you think about ...
ON SUNDAY, members of the
SACP, NUM, Cosatu and the ANC
gathered at the memorial lecture
of Elijah Barayi. At the meeting,
the name of deputy president
Cyril Ramaphosa was raised as
the next president of the country.
Do you think he is a good
c a n d i d at e ?
Kwanda Ntsinde from Komani
No, he is pretty much like
Jacob Zuma – corrupt. I feel that
he looks down on people,
especially the poor black people.
He still needs to deal with what
happened in Marikana before he
JEFFREY LIWANA LWANDILE MBENGO NONKULULEKO SONDLO ZIMBINI HLUNGULU
becomes the next president.
Jeffrey Liwana from Bede
There is still the cloud of
Marikana that is lingering over
his head. I don’t think he is an
honest person, because it is
alleged that he promised money
to the miners affected by what
happened five years ago and yet
they are still waiting for payment
t o d ay.
Lwandile Mbengo from
E zibeleni
I believe he could be the
perfect candidate. He is a
people’s person – he goes out
and listens to people’s
frust rations.
Nonkululeko Sondlo from Sada
He is the right person for the
position because he is not as
scandalous as Jacob Zuma.
Zimbini Hlungulu from Top
To w n
He is the deputy president so I
think it makes sense for him to
be the next president and he has
a lot of experience. He does not
have scandals, and he will have a
positive impact on our economy.

Unite in the fight
against poverty
PAKAMISA Xashimba of
Komani writes: The
downward spiral of the
economy of South Africa is
rapidly leading to poverty,
destitution and
d e s p o n d e n c y.
The downgrading of our
country by world credit
rating agencies, the looting
of the state coffers by those
in power through corruption,
state capture, money
laundering, etc is the
obvious cause of this state
of affairs.
The time has come for
those who love their country
– in the ruling party, civil
society, labour movement
and opposition parties – to
fight this scourge.
I shudder to think what
will become of this country
before we go to elections in
2019. Those who take over
the government through the
ballot will absolutely receive
a battered economy and
skeletons to collect.
The Guptas and those
affiliated to them should be
exposed for what they are –
vultures of no fitting
description – and deported
to their country by the above
groups.
We need to identify these
plunderers, bring them to
book, arrest them and
convict them by courts of
law. The people of this
country are fortunate to have
a great Constitution. It
allows sufficient space to
fight malpractices in
government including the
protection of human rights
and advocacy of law. People
should guard against wolves
in sheep’s clothing when
electing candidates into
positions of power.
I can not foresee
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma,
the proposed presidential
candidate, making a clean
breast of the rot in
government due to her
association with the Zuma
family by blood.
Her family is deeply
implicated in state capture
and the Gupta patronage
and therefore she should be
advised to stay out of the
contest for the presidency.
We should avoid creating
family dynasties, as is the
case in most countries on
this continent.
We need somebody, who
will be able to take this
country forward and who will
stamp out the rot, including
the looting of state
resources. – Let te r
Nkwinti ignoring land claims
ZWELIBANGILE Modi of Ezibeleni
writes: After watching Minister
Gugile Nkwinti’s efforts to resolve
the outstanding land claims made
during 1998 to date – and those
from 2014 on – I found him to be
nothing but a stumbling block.
It would be a good thing for him
and beneficial for the land
claimants if he stepped down
v o l u n t a r i l y.
I found it quite eccentric for the
minister to care so little for the
plight of those who were forcefully
removed from places like
Middelburg, Cape, during 1968 to
1970 – and other areas. It’s almost
49 years ago. How does he go to
bed peacefully knowing these
victims are now on their
deathbeds? Many have passed on.
Why, if he cares, does he not set
a timeframe for the settlement of
these claims? In parliament, he and
his comrades debate back and forth
on this subject, hoping that the next
vote will be positive.
Let the minister explain in full
detail as to what his department is
doing on a daily basis to resolve
these outstanding claims? The time
is short and the people are running
out of patience.
The claim that the court had
ruled that no new claims should be
considered until the 1998 claim had
been finalised rings hollow. Why
are they still outstanding?
The only reasonable voices that
begin to emerge now are those who
call for occupation of the land.
Minister, watch that space.
THE REPRESENTATIVE 23 June 2017
ROUND&ABOUT
Magnificent event for flying machines
CHUX FOURIE AND
SONJA RAASCH
A
REALLY good crowd turned up for
the Queenstown Flying Club’s
Allister Miller centennial
celebrations marking the very first
landing of an aircraft here in 1917, when
Major Allister Miller and his mechanic,
Sergeant Way, came to Queenstown to
recruit trainee pilots to take part in
World War 1.
Proceedings started on a serious note
on Friday afternoon with the dedication
of a wall of remembrance at the airfield.
Alasdair McDonald was master of
ceremonies, the MOTHs played their
part, Mark Sahd gave a brief history of
aviation in these parts and Reg Morgan
conducted the actual dedication.
Three of Allister Miller’s
grandchildren, Allister and Mike Peter
and Anne Moorcroft, were present and
Allister gave a brief response after
which the Last Post and Reveille were
played, followed by an impressive low
flypast by three planes.
Included in the semi-circle formed by
the wall is an old crane, beautifully
restored, which was used during the
days of 47 Air School in World War II to
lift the engines out of aircraft for
servicing or repair. Since the ’40s it has
been standing in the open at the police
base until club members and friends
managed to get it sandblasted, restored
and painted and now it stands in a
place of honour.
There were some fascinating planes
on display, ranging from tiny
“mosquitoes” to the comparatively huge
Douglas DC-3 Dakota, which Google
describes as “universally recognised as
the greatest plane of its time”.
The aircraft used to be a passenger
aircraft of SAA and came to the show
from the Rand. Now about 70 years old,
there are still hundreds of them earning
their keep around the world, ferrying
passengers or cargo.
After all her years of military and
civilian service this one, now named
Marilyn, has been carrying freight
between O R Tambo and Gaborone for
the past 10 years.
The Beech 18 is another interesting
one. Built in 1959, the one here is the
only airworthy one left in Africa and
featured in the 2008 movie Amelia with
Richard Gere and Hilary Swank about
aviating pioneer Amelia Earhart, who
disappeared over the Pacific Ocean in
ON THE NOTICE BOARD
THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN: Here from Johannesburg to fly the Douglas DC-3
Dakota, Captain Flippie Vermeulen and Captain Lorrie Raath look back at their
passengers with a smile
Picture: CHARLOTTE VAN DER BERG
1937. The orange colour on the wings is
a relic of the movie.
The Dragon Rapide of the Historic
Wings Collection was built in 1944 and
attracted much attention, as it should
as there are only about 15 or 16 of them
still flying worldwide.
I could not help noticing the witch,
FLYING MACHINES: On view at the airshow were, from left, Historic
Wings Collection’s 1941 Tiger Moth (complete with witch), the rare 1959
Beech 18 with the orange paintwork on the wings that featured in the
film ‘Amelia’ and the Douglas DC-3 Dakota from Johannesburg that still
earns its keep as a cargo carrier
Picture: CHUX FOURIE
complete with broomstick and cat, on
the side of the 1941 Tiger Moth
belonging to the Historic Wings
Collection. I’m told the witch was quite
a status symbol, indicating that the pilot
had completed a certain portion of his
training in the old Rhodesian Air Force.
After the proceedings everyone
retired to the clubhouse where the Peter
brothers were presented with honorary
membership of the Queen’s College Old
Boys’ Association by national president
Bryan Kretschmer.
Hundreds of visitors poured in
through the gates of the airfield from
early on Saturday for a day unlike any
other in the history of the town.
Young and old alike had the unique
opportunity to view aircraft, from the
vintage to the new, and flips were also
on offer.
Regional aerobatics champion Walter
Goodrich also showed off his skills
during the day.
The windy weather did serve as a bit
of a deterrent and prevented some of
the aeroplanes from making it to the
Komani event – but there was still
much on offer for locals and people
from further afield to see and admire.
Several stalls offering everything from
food to handmade goods were
accommodated in the hangar as
families made use of the opportunity to
have fun at the event.
In addition, a number of vintage
tractors and vehicles as well as some
motorcycles could be viewed
throughout the day.
avoid clashes.
Komani stock theft on the increase
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
WHILE a local stock farmer is thrilled
with the recovery of his stolen sheep,
the Komani police have warned that
stock theft is on the increase in the
area.
Farmer Jikumthetho Kobese from
Madeira Park said he was overjoyed
after members of the Komani stock
theft unit recently recovered 30 stolen
sheep, found by Lieutenant-Colonel
Siphelo Jaggers, Warrant Officer
Thembinkosi Dlali and Constable
Thando Tabata.
Kobese, who keeps his stock in the
Mlungisi kraals, said he discovered
recently that the livestock was
missing. “When I checked the sheep
pen, I found only six of them and 30
missing. I woke up my shepherd who
was sleeping at the time and asked
him the whereabouts of the stock. He
said they were grazing nearby.”
Kobese said he left to search for
them, but to no avail.
“I then took my shepherd in my car
and dropped him off at the fields
nearby to start looking, and reported
the incident to the stock theft unit.”
He said the sheep were found while
being herded on a road in the district
at 9pm and that the perpetrators fled
the scene.
Kobese said, “I acquired the
livestock in February last year during
the drought and have had to invest a
lot of money feeding them for about
two years. Now someone wants to
take away my hard work and efforts.”
The first lambing season would be
in September while he was looking
forward to participating in the first
shearing season in October.
Police spokeswoman captain
Namhla Mdleleni said stock theft was
on the rise in the cluster.
“Reports come from different areas
such as Cacadu, Whittlesea and
Molteno. As a result, this month stock
theft police are conducting a
campaign in areas reporting stock
theft problems.”
Turning life and community around
Former inmate teaches karate to
kids, helps with projects in Mlungisi
BHONGO JACOB
AN EX-OFFENDER convicted and
sentenced for murder is using the
skills he acquired in prison to give
back to his community.
Xolani Ellias Magwayi, 47, grew
up in Port Elizabeth and like any
child, his father envisioned the
best for him.
“My dad did not want me to be
on the streets, I was always inside
the yard. He wanted me to be
active in sport and on weekends
he would take me to work with a
mechanic.''
After completing matric, he
joined the police where he worked
for seven years before leaving to
work as a private investigator, a
job which lasted until 1998.
Magwayi had always aspired to
be an entrepreneur in Komani.
“I came to Komani and built a
shack in Mlungisi. I bought stock
– just tea bags, sugar and other
small products.”
Within three years, he was
running two businesses and had
created employment for eight
people. “I had a business that
dealt with fibreglass material and
a fruit and vegetable shop. My
then-wife looked after the latter.”
Just as life was starting to
flourish with the birth of his son in
2001, Magwayi started to have
marital problems.
“Strange things started to
happen between me and my wife
and unfortunately one day this led
me to shoot her in anger.”
He was sentenced to 25 years in
prison in 2002. “The first few
months were hard as I thought
about the relationship I would
have with the people I had
disappointed. It was difficult to
have to share a cell with 72 men.”
Prison helped him with anger
management. “I also did and
taught karate because it helps to
build character.”
He developed an interest in
religious studies and formed
several music groups before being
released on parole in 2012.
“What made me happy was that
I went through the restorative
justice programmes which helped
to bring my in-laws to visit me so I
could ask for forgiveness.”
Today, the father of three is
involved in community projects
which include a neighbourhood
watch, teaching children karate
and sharing his skills with
community members.
“When I walked out [of prison], I
knew I wanted to contribute in a
positive way to my community. I
would like other people to learn
from my mistake. I am happy to
work with members of the
community and to see progress.”
He urged married couples to
avoid tension at home.
“If you disagree over something
it is better to leave it for a while
and talk about it again when you
are in a more positive mood. It is
very difficult if you have
committed a big sin, but God
carries us through.”
THIS weekend will be decidedly
chilly, but it will also be sunny
and clear so wrap up warmly.
This morning was due to get
off to a cold start of -4°C and the
KOMANI W E AT H E R
maximum will be only 12°C.
To m o r r o w ’s minimum will be
-2 with a very light breeze, rising
to 17°C.
On Sunday temperatures will
be slightly better, varying from
-1°C and going up to 19°C and
there will be a gentle breeze.
THE REPRESENTATIVE 23 June 2017
Cleaners call
for their UIF
payments
BHONGO JACOB
FORMER cleaners at Frontier
Hospital, contracted under
Sbomvana Cleaning Services, are
fighting a new battle – this time
for their Unemployment Insurance
Fund (UIF) benefits.
The Rep reported (“Dirty Frontier
raises concern”, April 14) that
Sbomvana cleaners started a sit-in
in September last year, raising
queries about alleged outstanding
wages and bonuses (“Pay us first”,
April 29).
Nurses took to cleaning the
hospital as cleaners embarked on
a sit-in which lasted eight months.
A group of workers told The Rep
this week that a new company,
Numerous Cleaning Services, had
been contracted to clean at the
hospital and that they were told
whoever had been employed
under Sbomvana, would not be
employed by the new cleaning
c o m p a n y.
A worker, who did not want to
be named, said all they wanted
now was their UIF benefits.
“It seems that no one really
cares about us. I have been
unemployed the whole year and I
have a child at Wits University. It
is getting harder to support my
family and I do not know how we
will get through this. We just want
our UIF money and to get on with
our lives.”
They accused the department of
health of unfair labour practices
and claimed the new company’s
workers had been paid two
months before they started work.
The case was pending at the
labour department.
Labour director Mike Ngqolowa
said they were still waiting for
Sbomvana director Milton Ncwabe
to send UIF documents.
“I called and told him about the
situation and he told us that those
workers were no longer his
employees.’’
He said Sbomvana had never
submitted declaration forms to the
department which made it difficult
to pay the workers.
“At the beginning of every
month, companies need to declare
how many employees they have.
The declaration comes with a
responsibility that they are going
to pay for the UIF. Sbomvana did
not register for UIF and that is why
they are struggling.’’
S b o m va n a ’s Ncwabe refused to
comment.
“Those people are dreaming,
they must be drunk. I have sent
the documents to the department
of labour in Kokstad and I do not
have to comment on this,” he said.
Health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo
denied that the new cleaning
company workers had been paid
in advance.
“The new service provider has
been awarded a six-month
contract following a procurement
process in line with the Public
Finance Management Act.”
TOGETHER WE CAN: Members of Komani churches protested the killing of women and children during a march in town last
week
Picture: ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
Marchers slam violence
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
MEMBERS of local churches
marched to the Komani police
station to protest the killing of
women and children last
T h u r s d ay.
Fezeka Mangele, from
Mlungisi’s JZS Ncevu United
Presbyterian Church, said the
initiative to host a march was
raised by the main church in
East London.
Mangele said, “We decided
not to do it as a single church
but to involve other churches
and community members. We
asked them to sign a petition
to show we are united
because what other provinces
are going through also affects
us. Enough is enough.”
While the community
members could see the effort
put in by the police, the public
was appealing for cooperation.
Presbyterian Church
secretary Mahlubandile
Sanqela said, “I am part of
this march because it bothers
me to see women and children
being victimised. Men need to
st o p raping women. It
disgraces us as men.
“A man’s role is as a
protector. Another issue that
needs to be addressed, is that
people must take on the
responsibility of looking after
themselves and not just
depend on the police.”
Enoch Mgijima executive
mayor Lindiwe Gunuza
Nkwentsha said, “The rate of
children and women being
attacked is increasing. We are
afraid even if our children are
at school. The Presbyterian
Churches in united
effort to call for end
of killings of women
and children
Church has taken a stand to
show that churches have a
role to play in the community.”
Nkwentsha said youths
were falling victim to drug
abuse and that in the past,
people used to pray for them,
but this seemed to have
changed.
“There is nothing we can do
without churches. It is where
people find comfort and are
consoled.”
Station commander Colonel
Sango Titi accepted the
petition and said it would be
handed to the South African
Police Services national office.
“I have hope the response
will be quick because these
killings are not wanted all
over South Africa and the
police also speak against
this.”
The police were grateful for
the march as it was a sign of
cooperation between the
police, churches and the
Komani community.
Medical explanation
for deformed sheep
ZOLILE MENZELWA
A PICTURE of a deformed lamb
born in Cacadu (Lady Frere) that
went viral on social media this
week is not a crossbreed
between a human being and a
sheep, the NSPCA and the
department of rural development
and agrarian reform (DRDAR)
confirmed on Wednesday.
Speculation was rife on social
media this week that the lamb
was the product of intercourse
between a human being and a
sheep.
NSPCA chief inspector Vonny
Strachan said this could be as a
result of the same sheep mating
over a long period of time with
no new genes brought in.
“This can lead to a ram having
sex with his daughters and
sisters and this leads to
deformities. It is impossible for a
human to reproduce when
having sex with an animal.”
Strachan said the cause of
this could also be a case of the
lamb being born before term.
She said the fact that there
were some who thought people
may be having sex with animals,
was cause for great concern.
“Bestiality is a serious
criminal offence and it should be
reported. It has been proven that
people who have sex with
animals are likely to rape women
and children – so people who
know of this should immediately
report it and police should take
it as a serious case,” St rachan
said.
DRDAR provincial chief
director of veterinary services Dr
Lubabalo Mrwebi said the lamb
was a stillborn sired by a sheep
RIFT VALLEY FEVER: The probable cause of a deformed lamb born
in Cacadu (formerly Lady Frere) has been medically explained by
two independent sources
Picture: SUPPLIED
and was infected by Rift Valley
fever at an early stage of its
g e st at i o n .
“It is not uncommon for
pregnant animals to be infected
by viruses early in their pregnancy.
Virus infections in the
early stages of pregnancy may
infect the foetus and lead to the
development of malformations.”
He said the resultant
circulation of the virus in the
blood found its way through the
maternal blood into the uterus
and the foetus, which was at a
critical stage of development.
The infected foetus failed to form
properly, leading to the
deformit y.
“It is worth noting that a
sheep has 28 pairs of
chromosomes, a goat has 30
pairs while humans have 23
pairs. These facts are important
in dispelling the myth that a
union of a sheep ovum and a
human sperm can lead to the
development of a viable life
fo r m . ”
The department’s veterinary
officials would conduct a
post-mortem on the deformed
lamb and its results would be
communicated to the public by
the department once complete.
“The lesson we are learning
from this experience is that
small stock farmers must keep
their animals protected against
diseases like Rift Valley fever
with the correct vaccine, which
is best given long before the
mating season so that by the
time the females get pregnant,
they are already protected
against this disease.”

Fake posts warning
THE Komani police have appealed to members of
the public to stop circulating false rumours on
social media.
Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni,
referring to the recent arrest of six suspects
following an armed robbery in Komani, said photos
of the suspects had started circulating on social
media soon after the arrests.
“Now people are starting to say the men have
been linked to abductions in the area – it’s simply
not true.”
Mdleleni said further false reports of attempted
or actual kidnappings were also doing the rounds
on social media but that police had no such cases
or any related information.
“We appeal to members of the public to refrain
from creating such false posts which result in
confusion, fear and uncertainty.”
THE REPRESENTATIVE 23 June 2017
Kit for sports teams
ZOLILE MENZELWA
THE Nana Development Agency
(Nada) made good on its word
when it delivered soccer and
netball kit, soccer boots and
sneakers for netball players from
Ezibeleni while the country
celebrated Youth Day on Friday.
Gwiliza Foundation, which is
part of Nada, bought kit after a
promise was made in March
during the Nada Sports Festival.
This was after one of the local
teams, the Shooting Stars U13
team, did not have kit.
The foundation also bought
tracksuits for the technical staff
of Nana 11, an Ezibeleni team
selected from teams in the area
which played the Chippa United
MultiChoice Diski Challenge side
last December.
The soccer kit was, however,
sponsored by the sport,
recreation, arts and culture
department to Nana 11. Speaking
during the handover at the
Ezibeleni Stadium, soccer zonal
chairman Sandile Mata said Luvo
Gwiliza and his wife, Dee, might
underestimate what they had
done but if they looked at the
smiles of the young people, they
would see its impact.
“You are not doing this for
yourselves but you saw children
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: One of the sponsors of Nada
Development Agency, Gwiliza Foundation, handed over medals
and donated kit and sneakers to the Shooting Stars U13 team on
Youth Day at the Ezibeleni Stadium Picture: ZOLILE MENZELWA
from poor backgrounds and God
touched your hearts to share the
little that you have.”
Gwiliza said what they were
doing was not charity but
community development by
giving the youth tools to develop
themselves.
“You have no business
drinking alcohol and doing
drugs. Focus on your studies and
playing sport. This will save you
from being dependent on people
as an adult.”
Shooting Stars coach Yolisa
Zaku said she was happy with
the donation.
Border rugby league in full swing
MAXWELL LEVINE
AFTER a week’s recess, the Border rugby leagues
are back in full swing.
Old Collegians will take on log leaders Black
Eagles in a top-of-the-table clash at the Thobi Kula
Indoor Sports Complex.
Eagles are currently unbeaten. They lead
second-placed Old Collegians by seven points. It’s
a must-win match for Collegians after having won
their last five matches. A win for OC will cut the
deficit and the race for promotion will be on.
OC must win and take all five points on offer
and prevent Eagles from taking any points.
In the Super League, Breakers travel to
Mdantsane to lock horns with Swallows. Swallows
are currently in fourth position and pushing hard
for a gold cup spot. Breakers have been blowing
hot and cold and have not yet won on the road.
Log leaders Old Selbornians face Buffs at home
while Winter Rose travel to a resurgent Police
side. It is the battle of the students as Fort Hare
Blues take on Walter Sisulu All Blacks in Alice.
Ocean Sweepers are in desperate need of all
five points when they host Cambridge in a
relegation battle. In the Premier League, Shining
Stars travel to King for a date with Brumbies.
Young Leopards host Ready Blues while it
should be an easy afternoon for Wallabies as they
host Evergreens. Ngculu Zebras tackle Bussy Boys
while Africans enjoy a bye.
Tough times for Shining Stars
MAXWELL LEVINE
WHEN it rains it pours for Shining
Stars, who find themselves in hot
water with the Border Rugby
Football Union misconduct
commit tee.
Shining Stars official Zane
Tsotetsi has been found guilty of
assaulting referee Sizwe Sodinga
during a match last month.
Stars were playing Old
Collegians in Komani, a match
they lost 23-10. The Mlungisi club
has been instructed to play their
remaining league fixtures away
from home as punishment, giving
their opponents an added
advantage. First of these matches
was two weeks ago against
Wallabies in Stutterheim, which
the team failed to attend.
According to the report by the
Border referee, Tsotetsi attacked
Sodinga after the final whistle and
struck him with a flat hand while
walking off the field.
Border Rugby director of rugby,
Dumisani Mhani, said Border
wanted to send out a strong
message against violent behaviour
aimed at match officials.
Stars have responded to the
allegations and findings by writing
to the union. They were invited to
a meeting which they failed to
attend. This could be detrimental
to Shining Stars, as they failed to
travel for two consecutive matches
and did not honour their fixture
against Africans on May 27.
Border rules state that if a team
fails to honour three league
fixtures, the team will be kicked
out of the league. Stars’ m at c h
against King Brumbies this
weekend is a “m u st ” t ravel,
bearing in mind the rule which will
come into play. It’s been a
downward spiral for the club after
starting the season brightly,
winning three matches in a row.
Stars are eighth on 11 points after
two points were deducted for
failing to fulfil fixture obligations.
Sodinga said this week that he
did not hit the referee and that he
did not attend a hearing as he had
not been notified. He was also not
notified of a guilty verdict, he said.
Road fatality stats raise alarm
HE annual road fatality statistics for
2016, published by the Road Traffic
TManagement Corporation (RTMC), are
a cause for concern and point to an urgent
need for combined interventions in road
safety in South Africa to curb the rising
numbers.
This is according to the Automobile
Association (AA) which was commenting
on data contained in the RTMC’s Road
Traffic Report Calendar for the period
January 1 to December 31 last year.
According to the figures, 14071 people
died on South African roads last year, a
9% increase on the 2015 figure of 12944.
More than 1120 more people died on the
roads in 2016 than in 2015, the highest
annual road death toll since 2007 when
14 920 people died on the roads. In 2006,
15 419 people died.
Human factors are indicated as the
biggest contributor, accounting for 77.5%
of contributing factors. Vehicle factors
(6%), and road and environmental factors
(16.5%), make up the balance of
contributing factors.
Among the human factors that lead to
crashes and deaths are jaywalking
pedestrians (38.8%), hit-and-run crashes
(18.5%), high speed (14.1%), overtaking in
the face of oncoming traffic (6.9%), drunk
driving or driving while on drugs (3.6%),
and driver fatigue (2.2%).
“These figures are alarming. These
numbers seem to indicate that awareness
campaigns and education initiatives are
not working well enough, driver attitudes
are getting worse, and that law
enforcement is not making the impact it
should,” the AA said.
The statistics show Gauteng and
KwaZulu-Natal have the highest
percentage of road deaths. In Gauteng,
2700 people died on the roads, and 2715
in KwaZulu-Natal. The Northern Cape (409
deaths), the Free State (992 deaths), and
North West (1084 deaths) had the lowest
death rates.
The AA said a wider approach to road
safety education is needed in schools,
teaching children from a young age to be
better road users. Law enforcement
initiatives should be supported in the
courts with traffic offenders being given
the harshest possible penalties.
In addition, the AA said, organisations
and agencies involved in road safety
initiatives needed to foster a closer
working relationship to make the
messaging about road safety uniform.
“There is ample evidence to suggest a
more coherent approach to road safety is
needed in South Africa, and we call for
immediate intervention from everyone
involved to make this happen.
“Taking drivers with illegal licences off
the road, and curbing the number of
unroadworthy vehicles is a good first step.”
ON A ROLL: Debbie Bradfield of the
Golf Bowling Club recently won the
Border ladies’ singles championship.
She has been invited to a Bowls SA
training camp at The Nest in the
Drakensberg next month as a result of
the talent identification programmes
at a zone camp she won last year in
Port Elizabeth. She was then invited
to the national camp in
Johannesburg, which she also won.
The results of the training camp at
The Nest could mean possible
selection to the gold squad which
feeds the Protea team

Sponsorships were raised with a
set of jerseys and shorts from DIY
Tombstones and shorts from Pick
sponsorships were also looking
promising, he said.
A donation of first aid sports
packages had been received from
supporters with the club grateful for
the support of the sponsors.
“The club constitution has been
updated and adjusted to comply
with those of its immediate senior
bodies – Border Rugby and the
Queenstown Rugby sub-union,” he
said.
“Performance on and off the field
has already laid the foundation for a
brand of rugby that is dynamic, new
and exciting,” he said.
Challenges being experienced
include a lack of training facilities,
transport of players and the impact
of joblessness on those wanting to
par ticipate.
The club was hoping to grow its
player base to ensure that it
reached the heights of success in
the future.
which involved the
department of sport,
recreation, arts and culture,
had rugby teams from six
schools from Mlungisi and
Ezibeleni facing off on Youth
Day on Friday.
Programme organiser Kaya
Malotana said the Louis Rex, Nonesi,
Lukhanji, St Theresa’s, Sixishe and
Howard Ben Mazwi schools enjoyed
the day.
Six U13 teams and four U12 teams
played, with each team comprising
20 players.
“Breakfast and lunch packs were
provided for all players and officials
and Queen’s College made available
the school buses to pick up and drop
off the children for the event.”
Malotana said the event aimed to
celebrate Youth Day through sport.
“We did not make it a tournament
format so there was not an eventual
winner and each team played once.
“We did not take scores in at the
end of the day because our
emphasis was on enjoyment and
celebration. This also encouraged
the teams to really play in the spirit
of sportsmanship and not with a
win-at-all-costs attitude.“
He said good talent was identified
during the day. The aim is to grow
the event to a three-day festival,
where the teams will play at least
three matches each. – Rep reporter
Hoërskool Hangklip
golf day a success
SEAN HEIDEMANN
THE Hoërskool Hangklip golf day
on Saturday had a field of 61
golfers taking to the greens to
battle for top honours.
The wind tested all the golfers
and at the end of the day,
Michelle Mitchell took the win
with a well-played 43 points,
closely followed by Wayne
Bennett on 41 points on a
count-out from Chicken Meyer,
also on 41 points.
The Hangklip organising
committee made sure that every
player got a prize which was a
really special touch.
Every effort was made to
ensure that the golfers were well
looked after, including a
boerewors roll at halfway, drinks
on the course and even a
lasagne supper before prize
giving.
The golfers have expressed
their appreciation to the school
for a great golf day.
Tonight is the Round Table
steak evening with their golf day
taking place tomorrow.
The golf draw is full but golfers
can phone in their names to the
club in case of any cancellations.
