New wind
atlas a breeze
Map maximises
energy efforts
MATTHEW FIELD
The department of energy celebrated
the launch of the latest
high-resolution wind resource map
at the Wind Atlas for SA (Wasa)
seminar held at the East London
International Convention Centre last week.
The first wind atlas was put together in
Cape Town on March 13 2012. The new map
is the third iteration.
The event was attended by members of
the SA National Energy Development
Institute (Sanedi), the Royal Danish
Embassy, and and the United Nations
Development Programme.
Department of energy acting
director-general Ompi Aphane delivered the
keynote address.
Aphane said the wind resource map
allowed government to more effectively
maximise renewable energy generation.
“It would be difficult to plan thoroughly
for the increased uptake of wind energy if
one does not have certainty on wind
resource availability. Therefore, the need for
reliable, accurate and representative data
on wind is critical,” said Aphane.
Aphane went on to praise Wasa, calling it
“one of the most critical elements of South
Africa’s renewable energy efforts because
of the repository of knowledge about the
scale and location of our wind resources”.
Wasa is made up of the Centre for
Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR),
University of Cape Town (UCT), the SA
Weather Service (SAWS), Danish Technical
University (DTU), and Sanedi.
“These are independent public interest
organisations with no vested commercial
WINDS OF CHANGE: The latest iteration of Wasa will allow the government to more
effectively harness wind energy
Picture: FILE
interest in the local wind energy sector. The
research conducted and products delivered
are therefore not subject to any commercial
interests or pressures,” said Aphane.
According to Aphane, South Africa’s
renewable energy programme is well on
track thanks to the introduction of the
Renewable Energy Independent Power
Producer Procurement Programme
(REIPPPP) in 2011 which has resulted in the
procurement of 6.3GW of renewable energy
capacity, with 3.9GW currently online.
“The transparent and competitive bidding
nature of the REIPPPP has been the main
driving force behind the reduction in costs
of these renewable projects,” said Aphane.
Solar power generation has dropped by
almost 80% since 2011 while onshore wind
power has seen a 60% reduction in costs.
This has allowed renewable energy to
compete effectively with conventional
energy sources, such as coal.
MATTHEW FIELD
Laërskool Nahoon pupil Charlene
Erasmus, 7, is the lucky winner
of the Vincent Park Paints Easter
competition held between March
11 and April 1.
The competition was
organised by Vincent Park Centre
with the GO! & Express as the
sole media sponsor.
The competition required
children to submit designs for
Easter eggs with the winning
design being translated into a
3D egg by local graphic artist
Lynne Price.
In addition to seeing her
design brought to life, Erasmus
also won a R2,500 Vincent Park
gift card for herself and a R2,500
Vincent Park gift card for
Laërskool Nahoon.
“All of the entries were
uploaded onto the Vincent Park
Facebook page, where members
of the public were invited to vote
for their favourite.
“Charlene’s entry received
over 600 likes,” Vincent Park
centre manager Joseph Parsley
said.
Erasmus was incredibly
excited when she heard that she
had won.
“When I heard that I was the
winner, I could not believe it.
Thank you to everyone that voted
for me and helped my dream
come true,” Erasmus said.
“The design was my own idea.
I love different colours. I used my
Twisties to colour my egg. I also
think that my Easter egg looks
beautiful. My rabbit has long
ears because I think that the
Easter Bunny has long ears,” she
said.
“Painting this egg has been an
absolute joy. Meeting little
Charlene was the cherry on the
top. Her amazement and
disbelief that she had won made
my heart sing. She was really
blown away by her giant egg,”
Price said.

Nate’s Car
Sales makes
a difference
AMANDA NANO
Giving back and adding value to the
community are but a fraction of what
Nathanael Padayachee does in his spare
time.
Backed by his entire team at Nate's Car
Sales, the company has been an integral
part of the East London community for the
past 15 years.
The dealership provided a vehicle to local
pastor Pieter Booysens who is now en route
to Zimbabwe via Johannesburg where he
will meet up with other good Samaritans to
help those displaced by Cyclone Idai.
“This is special and a blessing as he's
doing something great by assisting those
displaced. We put in a full tank of fuel and
some clothes to take along as well,”
Padayachee said.
In addition to helping victims of the
cyclone, Nate's Car Sales is also running a
book drive which will come to a close at the
end of May. Together with ITEC Early
Education, they have managed to collect a
large number of books so far.
“We don't approach charities but rather
go out into the community and see what it is
they need. It has more meaning and affects
them in a positive manner,” Pa d aya c h e e
said.
Starting his business from his garage,
Padayachee has assisted the community in
his personal capacity, and now his staff has
followed his example.
“This has grown a lot, and we have
various ongoing drives. On May 1 we will be
starting with our winter drive and collecting
pre-loved clothes and blankets,” he said.
At the time of going to print, Booysens
was in Johannesburg and due to arrive in
Zimbabwe over the weekend.
Drop-offs for the book drive can be made
at 106 Main Road in Amalinda in East
London.
Restore Trust celebrates 10 years
SIVENATHI GOSA
The Restore Trust non-profit
organisation will be celebrating 10
years of helping the community on
May 18.
To mark the special occasion, they
will be hosting a music festival at the
Old Selbornian Club on the day with
Cape Town musician Matthew Mole
headlining.
“Our Breath of Life Place of Safety
operates with the objective of saving
babies by offering caring homes until
they are reunited or placed with their
forever families and to give women in
crisis pregnancies professional
Ret r a c t i o n
In last week's article “New project gives 'waste
a value'”, we incorrectly stated that recycled
plastic was used in bread bags. We apologise
and regret the error
suppor t,” Restore Trust director
Andrew Reilly.
“The fact that we have lovingly
cared for 140 babies and counselled
21,549 women in crisis pregnancies
to date is a major highlight for us.
“However, every time we hand over
a baby to their adoptive parents or
reunite them with their biological
families, as well as when a woman
decides against aborting and wants
to keep her baby, it’s a highlight.
“Also, when we see the pride in a
man or woman’s eyes after we have
provided them with a skill and they
are able to provide for themselves
and their families, it’s a highlight.
The fact that we as the Restore Trust
and are able to impact the lives of
the needy in Buffalo City is a
highlight. And obviously celebrating
our 10-year anniversary is definitely a
highlight,” Reilly said.
He said the main challenge they
face is keeping finances sustainable.
“We are very fortunate to live in a
city where its community and
businesses have a giving heart. We
have many organisations that are
doing good in our city and without
them the situation we face would be
much worse.
“The Restore Trust’s vision is to
expand to reach many more lives. We
“It is also our vision to own our
and by doing this, we will expanding
our services to the greater Buffalo
Marching
to wa r d s
winter chill
The march towards winter
continues this weekend with
cool temperatures and
some light rain predicted.
Things start off pleasant
on Thursday with the
maximum temperature
peaking at 21°C with light
cloud. Winds remain mostly
calm at just 14km/h from
the North-East.
Friday gets a bit warmer
and sees the temperature
climbing to 26°C.
T h u r s d ay ’s clouds are
nowhere to be seen but in
return, the wind begins to
pick up and will be blowing
through at 18km/h.
On Saturday, the
temperature plummets back
down to 20°C and the cloud
returns, foreshadowing rain.
The wind will be at its
strongest and is expected to
reach speeds of 29km/h,
this time coming in from the
South West.
Thankfully, the wind
quietens down somewhat
on Sunday to 18km/h and
brings some much needed
rain with it. Temperatures
remain chilly at 20°C.
Search for youth to own spazas
DOWN TO BUSINESS: Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa enterprise development manager Akhona
Sishuba addresses the youth of Gompo on Monday
Picture: SIVENATHI GOSA
SIVENATHI GOSA
The search for potential young business owners
across SA started at the Bizniz in a Box
programme held in East London, Mdantsane and
Gompo, as well as Zwelitsha, on Monday and
Tu e s d ay.
Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA)
enterprise development manager Akhona Sishuba
said the initiative was launched in 2015 by the
CCBSA Youth Entrepreneurship Programme.
“The programme is running in selected local
townships and villages where CCBSA, together
with their partners, run a competitive process
where young people compete for the chance to
operate and eventually own their own spaza shop.
“The programme involves the selection, training,
participation and eventual economic
independence of a cross-section of township youth
between the ages of 24 and 35,” said Sishuba.
In 2018, 380 youth participated with 46
becoming business owners, employing an
estimated 23 people within their communities.
The programme has attracted unemployed youth
who have matric but can’t further their studies, as
well as youth who are passionate about
community development.
A total of 50 business-minded entrepreneurs will
be selected to be part of the 2019 programme and
each got refurbished shipping containers from
which they will operate their businesses.
“The initial aim was to focus on Mdantsane and
Gompo, but BCM and the office of the premier
requested us to expand the programme to
Zwelitsha where unemployment is high.
Entrepreneurs can access a loan of up to R80,000
for operational costs,” said Sishuba.
She said successful applicants must reside in
the above-mentioned townships.
“We couldn’t do the whole of Mdantsane as it is
quite a big area. In the near future we are looking
to including other townships in East London.
“This programme is to absorb youth who are
innovative thinkers, young people who have a
passion for business and a vision to change the
economic landscape.”
The programme involves training, participation
and eventual economic independence.
“A report by The Euromonitor International
Africa Rising Megatrend revealed i n fo r m a l
convenience shops, known as spazas, contribute
an estimated R7bn to South Africa’s economy.
“The research highlights the need to recognise
the significant role played by spazas in the retail
chain and in communities,” Sishuba concluded.

Gone port fishing again
Anglers allowed in
designated area
MATTHEW FIELD
After prolonged discussion
with the Buffalo City of Salt
Water Anglers (BCASA),
Transnet National Ports
Authority (TNPA) finally
agreed to open a section of
the foreshore along West
Bank for public fishing from
M o n d ay.
Locals can fish in the
designated area between
6am and 6pm.
The GO! & Express
previously reported (Anglers
on mission to re-open
harbour, May 24 2018) that
BCASA had been pushing
TNPA for some time to allow
fishing in the area after it
was closed off to the public
in 2004.
BCASA chair Pe t e r
Greyvenstein said local
fishermen had been
pushing back against the
closure since the beginning.
“Other sporting codes
were allowed [at the
harbour] but we fishermen
were discriminated against.”
According to him, boating
and even fishing from boats
was not prohibited in the
same way fishing from the
shore was.
However, Greyvenstein
complimented TNPA for
being open to discussion.
“They [Port Authority]
always had an open door
policy for us,” he said.
“We’re grateful to the
BCMM [Buffalo City Metro
Municipality] and BCASA
for our constructive
engagements to date which
have enabled TNPA to ease
some of the restrictions on
fishing in the port without
compromising safety and
security of the port, port
users and operations,” said
East London port manager
Sharon Sijako.
“The re-opening of the
foreshore will initially run as
a three-month trial to
ensure all goes according to
plan and we’re calling on
the angling community to
be responsible in its use of
the site.”
Permits to fish at the
foreshore can be purchased
for R50 per person from
TNPA. BCASA will facilitate
the completion of indemnity
forms, assisted by Bilimoria
Fishing Tackle in Vincent.
TNPA will then issue the
permits through BCASA. CAST AWAY: The foreshore at West Bank was opened for public fishing recently by TNPA Picture: SUPPLIED

‘Nightflyer’ fails to live
up to promising hype
MATTHEW FIELD
N i g h t f l ye r s starts out so
promising.
Firstly, it’s based on a
novel by Game of Thrones
author George RR Martin,
so you know the
foundation is going to be
solid.
Secondly, the opening
scene is absolutely
gripping and does a great
job of making you want to
see this story through.
Unfortunately, the rest
of the series doesn’t really
live up to its own hype.
The story revolves
around the crew of the
titular spaceship
Nightflyer as they travel
deep into space to try and
make contact with a
mysterious alien life form.
However, things quickly
begin to unravel the
closer they get and soon
the crew has to battle not
just each other but their
“This will be a tool to motivate people in the
community about healthy lifestyles, as majority of
people are overweight and suffer some form of
chronic illnesses,” he said.
“The other purpose of the event is to showcase
the talent that Mdantsane has,” Rete said.
“I always believe that charity begins at home.
We should give back and support the people of
our community. The artists who will perform at the
event will depict the talent Mdantsane has, talent
that I believe should not only be supported by the
township but by the country,” he said.
Rete said the festival will be a platform for the
youth to showcase their different talents.
“We are trying to prevent the youth from getting
involved in criminal activities and alcohol
consumption.” The event will start at 10am and the
Easter is one of the more
jolly holidays on the public
calendar, second only to
Christmas (in my opinion)
when it comes to good
vibes.
If you think about it,
they're even got quite a bit
in common. Both are
celebrations of key moments
in Christianity (the
resurrection of Jesus Christ
and his birth, respectively),
both borrow heavily from
pre-historical pagan
traditions, and both focus on
the giving of free stuff to
other people.
It helps that Easter in SA
falls in that magical time of
the year where the
oppressive heat of summer
is on its way out but the
bitter chill of winter hasn’t
quite arrived yet.
There's lots of fun to be
had around Easter time
which means lots of ideal
photo opportunities too. So
why not take the chance to
take a few choice shots and
send them through to us? If
we get enough, we'll put
together a special Easter
collage in our April 25
Few as good as the ‘April dew’
Ah April! I am sure if we were to
conduct a poll to find out what
month was the most popular, surely
April would be at the top of the list.
After the past few energy-sapping
months when we all felt like fish out
of water, what a pleasure to bask in
the benign autumn weather we have
been blessed with these past few
weeks.
The next few months, as East
Londoners know, are the best of the
year with sunny days and virtually no
wind.
Those of us who find it difficult to
survive when the temperature
reaches the upper 30s might put
February right at the bottom.
Apart from Valentine’s Day
perhaps, sticky and humid February
I depart today from tranquil and
I just want to mention that I
noticed potholes were fixed in the
Bonza Bay Road. Thank goodness,
my complaint did not go unnoticed
for making the effort to make the
roads safe for all motorists.
Having said that, there is one
more thanks to the Spargs
SUPERSPAR in Beacon Bay.
It is the most incredible store
ever. I spent two months here and
whenever I visited the store, the
staff in every section were
incredibly helpful, friendly and
always went the extra mile.
That is so profound for a store as
huge as that. Everything under one
roof, excellent quality, totally an
amazing experience for me as I am
not a frequent visitor to East
London.
plastic-laden wind.
But April! Who can find fault with
April?
It is the month for poets and lovers
to walk tall. Suitable rhyming words
do not readily come to mind, but any
poet worth his salt should be able to
rattle off something about the “t ween
season of delight, of amber days and
cool scented nights.”
By April, most honest citizens have
paid off those terrifying bills which
follow in the wake of the festive
season. The children have been fully
equipped for the school year and
should be in robust health after long
doses of the sunshine vitamin.
In April, the sun rises at a rational
hour and sets early enough to limit
the evening gardening session.
Indeed for gardeners, April
provides the minimum of essential
duties. Weeds which have defied an
all-out assault through the spring
and summer begin to collapse and
wither of their own accord when the
crisper autumn breezes stir the
bronzing leaves.
There are fewer suicides and more
weddings in April than in any other
month.
This is the season for throwing out
the chest and tripping through the
dew!
So long as the calendar includes
an April, God is in his heaven and all
is right with the world.
Touching others’s lives positively
ROY HEWETT
Whether by design or
through our normal,
everyday interactions with
others, we all touch
peoples’ lives in one way
or another.
Very few of us do realise
the extent to which we
affect those around us and
we would do well to reflect
on how we are influenced
by our family, friends,
acquaintances and
experiences at all levels.
Family and friends teach
us social skills and develop
our confidence.
Acquaintances give us
opportunities to grow our
authenticity and integrity.
Lessons about ways of
interacting and showing
respect for the opinions,
strengths and weaknesses
of others grow us.
But often we don’t pay
enough attention to these
effects and influences, to
the detriment of
meaningful awareness and
informed reactions.
Significant points in this
regard are made in
Vishwas Chavan’s
Vishwasutras: Universal
Principles for
Living:
“Your success
is directly
proportional to
the number of
lives you have
touched for the
bet ter.”
See also Pat
Pat rick’s Awakening the
Dream Within:
“In life, we leave a
legacy to our children, we
leave our footprints
wherever we travel, and we
leave our fingerprints on
every heart we touch.”
With some reflection,
each of us should readily
be able to recall and
appreciate many of those
who have touched our lives
in positive and uplifting
way s .
While some of the
academic experiences in
classrooms certainly had a
role to play, it is life’s
lessons along the way that
often remain indelibly
imprinted in our psyches.
Even conflicts, fights and
seemingly unfair treatment
on occasion have played
their part in moulding us,
and their perpetrators have
also touched
our lives in
ways that only
become
apparent
upon reaching
maturity and
the wisdom of
the “golden
years”.
Many sports coaches
and mentors in the creative
and performing arts have
touched lives in
considerable and enduring
way s .
Skills have been
nurtured and honed,
healthy attitudes and
sportsmanship developed,
and the wonderful values
of support and teamwork
encouraged.
Those involved in
teaching in the broad
sense, are surely entitled
to derive a healthy sense
of worthwhile achievement.
This undeniable influence
is captured by Mastshona
Dhilway: “When you touch
minds, people are willing
to walk a dozen miles for
you; and when you touch
hearts, people are willing
to walk a thousand miles
for you; but when you
touch souls, people are
willing to walk a million
miles for you.”
Many lives are sublimely
touched by pets whose
devotion and loyalty that
know no bounds greatly
enhance the quality of life
of many humans.
Unfortunately, some fall
prey to brainwashing and
other forms of populist
deception during their life
paths, effectively reflecting
the dark side of touching
lives.
Fortunately for most of
us, when we reflect on how
our lives have been
touched, the focus is
usually on the positive and
uplifting experiences that
have helped to define us . .
. . . those that have led us
to value and live life to the
full.
This sense is depicted by
Ashley Smith: “Life is full of
beaut y.
Notice it. Notice the
bumble bee, the small
child, and the smiling
fa c e s .
Smell the rain, and feel
the wind. “Live your life to
the fullest potential, and
fight for your dreams.”
Wind Atlas
boosts green
planet ideal
If you look to
this week’s
front page,
you’ll see our
leading story
is the launch
of the third
iteration of
the Wind
Atlas for SA
(WASA), a
high-resolution map detailing the
movement of wind across the country.
As mentioned in the article, the atlas is
a major boon for the burgeoning
renewable energy sector in the country
and is sure to go a long way to helping
government invest more effectively in this
vital industry.
And invest they must, because – as I’ve
written plenty of times already and will
continue to do so plenty more times in
future – there are few things more
important right now than working towards
a dramatic curbing of our greenhouse
emissions.
Climate change is getting worse and,
as I’ve pointed already pointed out
previously (Change elite’s impact – n ot
climate, November 8 2018), we are mere
decades away from reaching a
catastrophic tipping point where the
feedback loop of man-made climate
change becomes unsustainable and
ultimately unstoppable.
There is still hope, however. In 2017,
Energy Watch Group – a global NPO
consisting of various scientists and
parliamentarians – conducted a study on
the feasibility of switching to a 100%
renewable energy sector.
Titled “Global Energy System Based on
100% Renewable Energy – Power Sector”,
the study found that “existing renewable
energy potential and technologies,
including storage, can generate sufficient
and secure power to cover the entire
global electricity demand by 2050”.
In other words, we don’t have to wait
for some miraculous intervention or
genius fix to save our planet. We have the
technology here and now to do what
needs to be done.
And yet if you listen to politicians home
and abroad, the opposite seems to be
true. Sure, there’s some minor investment
in renewable sources but with a few
exceptions (mostly in Europe), countries
are pushing hard for more of the same.
Here in SA, Eskom continues to invest
in coal power plants (and poor quality
coal at that) while ignoring the vast
opportunities the renewable sector has to
offer. In the US, you have Donald Trump
and his infamous belief in “clean coal”.
Even China, who has poured billions into
growing its renewable energy
infrastructure, is continuing to
commission new coal and diesel power
plants.
If renewable energy is capable of
meeting all our needs in its current state,
why then do governments continue to
promote the very energy sources that are
destroying our planet? One reason may
be cost. It is only recently that the price of
solar and wind power has dropped to a
level where it can compete with fossil fuel
and even then, it’s a pretty tight margin at
that. For a government such as ours
which is already cash-strapped, there
simply may not be enough money.
Lobbying could also be an issue. The
fossil fuel industry is one of the most
notorious when it comes to political
influence and is known to throw millions
at politicians in return for favours.
Wanting to save our planet may be all
well and good, but that long-term thinking
can be easy to ignore when the
short-term promise of piles of cash is put
in front of you.
Another reason may simply be
bureaucratic inertia. As many of our
readers can no doubt attest, the wheels of
government can move ridiculously slow
so trying to completely overhaul an entire
economic sector isn’t going to happen
overnight.
Despite all of that, however, we as
citizens should continue to press our
government to make the right choice and
invest in our future. We know now that it
is possible so now it’s time to put it into
action.

AMANDA NANO
The Senshinkan Dojo in
Southerwood, East London, hosts
the annual Eastern Cape
Kyokushinkan Karate
Tournament at Chiselhurst on
May 4.
Well over 100 fighters from as
far as the North West and the
Free State, along with those from
the Eastern Cape, will participate
in the tournament.
Categories include juniors,
young lions and seniors. The
senior’s category is divided into
weight classes, namely
under-65kg, under-75kg and
open division.
Senshinkan Dojo is owned by
Shihan Simphiwe Dlulane, who
has a fifth dan grading, and
sensei Dineo Dlulane, who has a
third dan grading.
Fitness, discipline and
confidence-boosting was how
dojo sempai Litha Mtalalisi
described the role of karate in
his life.
“I represented the dojo in
Russia in 2017 but it was quite
costly – I had to pay about
R33,000. However, the
experience was good though I
found it quite intimidating,” he
said. Mtalalisi also asserts that
the sport in SA is more of a
hobby, which may put one at a
disadvantage in the international
arena.
Mtalalisi said the tournament
was quite costly and assistance
would be most welcome.
“We have a quote of R24,000
for trophies and we’re also in
need of catering services to pull
off the tournament,” Mtalalisi
said. For those who can assist,
Hail the karting kid
SIVENATHI GOSA
At the tender age of six, Caleb
Odendaal has achieved what many
people who are far older than him
have failed to accomplish after being
crowned the 2018 Border Karting
champion.
Recently, Odendaal showed off his
skills by achieving the 50cc Bambino
class lap record at the East London
Grand Prix Circuit, in a time of
Caleb Odendaal is Border’s 2018 champ
46.996.
Caleb’s father, Laren, said he
realised his son was gifted at karting
the moment he did his first lap at the
age of five.
“The sport can be dangerous, but
Caleb is equipped with the necessary
skills, and I trust his ability,” he said.
The passionate Caleb is in a kart
almost every weekend – and
sometimes during the week – when
testing motors and doing set-ups in
the kart with his father.
“He is currently training for an
upcoming competition that will take
place this weekend in Port Elizabeth
ta the National Rotax Karting Circuit.
“I believe this sport offers a lot to
children as they need to be
disciplined and show good
sportsmanship towards one another.
It also opens opportunities for them
in the motor industry in terms of a
c a r e e r, ” Laren said.
