Computer Fundamentals
Course Code: MCT304 L-4, P-0, C-4
Objective: The basic objective of this course is to get familiar with computers and application of MS Office.
Course Contents
Unit – I
Introduction and History of Computers: Generations of computers, Characteristics of computers, Limitations
of computers. Basic computer organization (Input Unit, Memory, Output unit. CPU), Input-Output devices,
storage devices. (8 hours)
Unit – II
Memory hierarchy (Types- Primary and Secondary). Computer Software: Hardware & Software. Compilers,
Interpreters, Assemblers, Operating System, Study of windows XP- Use of menus, Tools and Commands of
window XP. (8 hours)
Unit – III
Computer Networks: Overview, Types of Networks (LAN, MAN, WAN), Network topologies, Components
of Computer Network -Server, Workstation, NIC, Hubs, Switchers, Cables etc.
(8 hours)
Unit – IV
Internet: Concept, Evolution, Characteristics, Limitations, E-mail, www, FTP, Telnet, Intranet, Extranet,
Searching, Uploading and Downloading from Internet, Hardware and Software requirement of Internet,
Search Engines, Browser. (8 hours)
Unit – V
MS-Office: Basics of MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS-PowerPoint, Application of these Software for
Documentation and Report Generation. (8 hours)
