Semester-I<br />

Textile Structure and Test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Course Code: MCT102 L-4, P-0, C-4<br />

Objectives: To understand the chemistry, production and fundamental properties of natural and manmade<br />

fibres.<br />

Course Contents<br />

Unit – I<br />

Polymer chemistry: Polymers, types of polymers, polymerization process, Def<strong>in</strong>ition of copolymer,<br />

oligomer, graft copolymer. Degree of polymerization. (8 hours)<br />

Unit – II<br />

Natural Cellulosic fibres- (Cotton, L<strong>in</strong>en): Chemical composition, morphology, molecular structure,<br />

physical and chemical properties. Prote<strong>in</strong> Fibre (Wool & Silk): Chemical composition, morphology,<br />

molecular structure, physical and chemical properties. Regenerated Cellulosic fibre: (viscose,<br />

cuprammonium, rayon, cellulose <strong>ac</strong>etate): Manuf<strong>ac</strong>tur<strong>in</strong>g, properties and uses. (8 hours)<br />

Unit – III<br />

Synthetic fibre (polyester, polyamide, <strong>ac</strong>rylonitrile): Chemistry, raw material, manuf<strong>ac</strong>tur<strong>in</strong>g process,<br />

physical and chemical properties. Blends of different fibres: Composition, Properties, and uses. (8 hours)<br />

Unit – IV<br />

Water: Types of water (hard and soft) and its effect on fibre. Scour<strong>in</strong>g : Use of surf<strong>ac</strong>e <strong>ac</strong>tive compounds <strong>in</strong><br />

scour<strong>in</strong>g. Role of soap and detergents as scour<strong>in</strong>g agents. (8 hours)<br />

Unit – V<br />

Starch and starch<strong>in</strong>g- Chemical structure and application of stiffen<strong>in</strong>g agents. Method of application of<br />

ble<strong>ac</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g agents for various textiles. (8 hours)<br />
