Issue 12 - Fear
Oblivion
Param Mehta
Never in half a decade had the car
stopped
But for that one day when the rain god
had a point to prove.
Maybe because bad luck had a point to
prove too.
The roaring thunder swallowed the
worthless cries
Of the engine that just won’t start.
Home was yet nowhere near, nor any
help,
Except in the form of a bus-stand a few
meters ahead
And an umbrella in the backseat.
Locking the car, I stepped out
When a gust of wind disarmed me
And my umbrella faded behind me in the
rain.
Retraced twenty steps to notice it
And a twenty more to regain it.
While I picked it up, a tune crept into my
ear.
The voice of a female singer dead three
decades ago!
Coming from the radio of a black sedan
That I didn’t remember passing.
Windows open, lights and vipers running.
The blades swept and all I could see was a
pair of eyes,
Staring at me.
They shone red before disappearing behind
the drops.
Reappeared after a couple of seconds,
Shooting beams of malice that could dissect
a feeble heart.
Reaching the car, I peeked from the window.
What awaited me was nothing!
As I turned, a creature pounced from
inside!
A black cat with a deafening scream.
I collapsed with a jolt and so did my
heart.
As I stood up, adrenaline came to my
rescue.
As I passed my car, the yellow streetlights
started flickering.
Winking at each other, cooking up a
conspiracy against me.
And suddenly, in unison, they all went
out!
Leaving my eyes worthless
But not my ears that heard alternate
spells
Of thunder and moaning hounds.
Though late, I justified the name smartphone
And opened the torchlight to see
Where I was heading, or
To see what was heading for me!
But suddenly, the flashlights started
flickering too
And so did my trust on machines.
That light died out too
Returning me back to the infernal blackout.
With things getting creepier I turned
about for the car.
I strode in its direction before a giant
flash of lightning
Embraced the sky for more than a second
And revealed a dark figure sitting in my
car!
Behind the wheel and staring at me.
While I debated if it was a delusion,
Impulse drove me to the forlorn busstand.
Exhausted, I sat on the bench.
But before I could breathe a sigh of relief,
My phone rang.
