DEPARTMENT REPORT | RECREATION Mauldin Sports Center Biggest Loser has come to an end. At the start of the 8-week competition, the 12 participants started with an overall body fat of 429% — an average of 35.7% per person. Participants ended with an overall body fat of 418.7% — an average of 34.8%. The top three overall winners are: Renee Neal (lost 4.1% body fat), Christy Bryant (lost 3.4% body fat), and Vanessa Ochieng (lost 2.2% body fat). Look for a similar challenge beginning this Spring! Congrats to all of our participants! And another congratulations to Taryn Willey, who decided to take her fitness a step further. Originally certified in Piloxing, she is now certified to teach a wide variety of group fitness classes such as tabata, hiit, intervals, and more. This month saw a high demand for All Ball Sport Circuit, which will now be on the schedule every other Wednesday evening and a few Saturday mornings. There was also an increase in demand for RIPPED classes, which will now be on the schedule every Wednesday morning, every other Thursday evening, and some Saturdays. Why does RIPPED work so well in this facility? RIPPED is for all fitness levels — from beginners to athletes and personal trainers. Members make the class as intense as they’d like or as easy as they’d like. There’s no plateau in this class because instructors constantly change the blocks around. Youth Activities One of Mauldin’s 10U All-Star basketball teams has qualified to participate in the SCAP State Tournament. Baseball and softball teams have started practice and will begin play on March 25th. Plans are being made now for the upcoming baseball and softball season.
Ray Hopkins Senior Center Members of the Senior Center kicked off the month with a Superbowl party where everyone brought their favorite appetizer and played tabletop football with spoons, shot pool, and played many games. The seniors are also helping the City gear up for the annual Egg Drop by stuffing eggs. Team Angel is back in full swing, writing cards to those in our community going through a difficult or joyous times. The team also visits friends in the hospital, rehab facilities or at home and provide caregiver relief. The Life Story class has provided seniors with an insight into their peers’ interesting lives. Bummin’ Around returned with a shopping trip to Steinmart followed by lunch at Olive Garden. The new class “Laughing with Linda” is a hoot, combining simple yoga with hearty laughter to increase oxygen to the blood and brain to lower stress hormones and blood pressure. Six AARP tax preparers are busy filling taxes for senior center members, with approximately 45 people attending every Thursday. Seniors took a trip to a Greenville Swamp Rabbit game where The Rabbits won in sudden death over time with our ladies shouting “Go Rabbits” and “hit them bunnies.” Registration is open for two trips to Atlanta’s Medieval Times for a matinee show and meal, a trip to Gibbs Gardens and a trip to Pleasant Ridge Camp.
