People will be able to see Zakarpattia Oblast traveling
in a historic locomotive
Since this August, tourists will be able to enjoy a ride on the
Borzhavska narrow-gauge railway in the historic German train
GR-280.
Twice a week (on Fridays and Saturdays) it will travel
between Irshava, Khmilnyk and Vynogradov. It has already
been long used in the city of Haivoron, Kyrovohrad Oblast.
However, in recent years, it has mainly been used by tourists.
The locomotive will be followed by three passenger cars and
one cargo car, which can be used for transporting small loads
or bicycles. The cars are local, from the Borzhavska narrowgauge
railway.
It is a joint project of the Ministry of Infrastructure, the
Zakarpatiia Oblast State Administration and partners from
Germany and Switzerland. Overseas partners have the
experience of restoring narrow-gauge railways in Romania,
which has become a very attractive tourist destination. It is
planned to attract them to restoration of the Borzhavska narrowgauge
railway, and the launch of GR-280 is considered the first
stage of this project. This is stated on the site of the governor
of Zakarpattia Oblast Hennadii Moskal. The locomotives of
the GR were manufactured in the post-war Germany in 1947-
1956. Interestingly, Zakarpattia has another German train of the
same series - GR-286, which is an exhibit of the Museum «An Old
Village» in Kolochav. Several other locomotives of the GR series
became monuments in a number of Ukrainian cities.
Kyiv zoo will be reconstructed according
to the European model
The reconstruction of the Kyiv zoo has begun. Kyiv
authorities promise that after renovating the zoo will become
more modern and comfortable for animals, and will meet the
standards of European zoos.
During the reconstruction, the zoo will continue to
function. Nowadays the zoo does not have enough cages,
the infrastructure for visitors is not developed, about 30% of
the zoo area is not used, and engineering networks are worn
out. The concept of reconstruction was developed by the
Kyiv Institute of Urban Design. After the works, the entire area
of the zoo will be used, a unique collection of plants will be
preserved, new zones for animals will be built. The exposition
of the zoo will be expanded. People would be able to see
animals from observation decks, and instead of fences there
will be stones, wood and other natural materials. Elephants
will get a special «Valley»; hippos, rhinoceroses and penguins
will get larger areas; giraffes, zebras and ostriches will
populate the «African savanna». Space will be added to the
«Bear’s Continent» and the «Island of Predators» with lions
and tigers. Water reservoirs will be cleaned, recreation areas,
ecological and educational complexes will be built, and
the zoo will be accessible to visitors with limited capabilities.
There will be an aquarium and terrarium, an aviary for exotic
birds, a park with plants and a children’s zoo where visitors
will get an opportunity to stroke and feed animals.
Battle of statues: a sand castle, a Sphinx and an opera
with tentacles made in Odesa
Odesa held a competition of sand sculptures.
According to the organizers, this competition was held in
Ukraine for the first time. Teams of sculptors presented five
large-scale sand statues, and dozens of people came to
see them.
Sand sculptures were created on the territory of
the coastal entertainment complex near the beach
«Dolphin», and the competition was organized by one of
Odesa construction companies. Participation was free of
charge. Several teams of amateur sculptors presented
their works.
«As far as I know, this is the first such competition in
Ukraine. No wonder that this tournament took place in our
southern city, because Odesa is a city on the sand by
the sea, and we hope that this festival of sand sculptures
will be held here annually, «the director of the organizing
company Dmytro Kovrov said noting that all the works
were unique, interesting and unusual.
Sand for the competition was brought specially
from a quarry. It took the participants six hours to create
statues with the help of spatulas and a painting knife. As
a result, the beach was adorned with a medieval castle,
a Sphinx, a fairy-tale bunny house, a fantastic variation of
the Sydney Opera House and the construction that unites
five Odesa monuments at the same time, for example, the
Vorontsovsky Lighthouse, the colonnade and the building
of the stock exchange on Dumska Square. By the way,
it was the last mentioned statue that was given the first
place.
The creator of the sculpture Anatolii Kyrienko
commented that he was a builder by education and had
been into creating sculptures for many years: since 2003
he had been making snow statues.
He told that all the ideas came to him during the work
and he never made sketches. «People see my sculpture
and learn about Odesa,» the author told us. «In fact, I
want to create concrete sculptures along the Health
Route.» Anatolii believes that such statues should serve
as benches, but look like a Sphinx or, for example, a cat
bench in the Mykolaiv Zoo.
The team of a citizen of Odesa Iryna Zahaichuk
also received an award for creating an exact copy of
a medieval castle. This sculpture was distinguished by
special precision and clear, even lines.
«We are very lucky to live in this city, because we
have sea and sand,»the participant praises her small
homeland. «In our free time, I organize my friends and
colleagues, and we go to the seashore and make sand
statues. For some people it’s a hobby, for others it is a form
of relaxation. Here during the competition, the shape of
the sand helped us see how the castle would look like
when it is finished.»
«Sehodnia» noticed that even after the results of the
contest were announced, the team continued to improve
the details of their medieval palace. «We are used to
providing straight lines and precise contours to our
sculptures so that the shape looks completely finished,»
explains the team and adds: they used 1.5 tons of sand to
make the statue.
However, curious children, apparently, most liked
the sculpture made by freshmen students of the Odesa
Pedagogical University. «At first we wanted to recreate
the Transfiguration Cathedral, but in the course of work
everything changed, and we made a copy of the Sydney
Opera House,» a student Mykola Zhukovskyi said.
The statue looks like this: large tentacles of some sea
creature are trying to reach the building of the Opera
House, which crowns the top of the sculpture. As the
students explained, during their work they had used not
only professional tools, but also improvised materials,
for example, they had made the windows with a small
seashell.
Every participant received awards and gifts.
Sculptors were awarded with statuettes, cash prizes, and
memorable t-shirts dedicated to the event.
Ukrainian extreme lovers traveling:
cycling to Singapore and South America
It took Odesa traveler Ruslan Veryn half a year to ride
a bike from Odesa to exotic Singapore. To get there, he
covered almost 15 thousand kilometers and crossed 13
countries: Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Pakistan, Myanmar,
India, Malaysia, Thailand and others.
On the way, the cyclist talked about Ukraine, gave
people Ukrainian flags, asked the locals to help him with
accommodation, and they treated him with unusual
national dishes. He hid from the rain and cold in temples,
and missed the Ukrainian winter during the period of
forty-degree heat in Nepal. He saw amazing monuments
of architecture and poor neighborhoods, watched
folk festivals and holidays. But the most interesting was
communicating with people. In the majority of countries
Ruslan was met with a benevolent attitude. Sometimes the
journey was difficult, but not frightening. In Singapore, the
traveler was welcomed by the Ukrainian diaspora on the
city embankment. He returned to Odesa on an airplane.
Meanwhile, Zaporizhia traveler and writer Volodymyr
Suprunenko is preparing for a trip to the Central and South
America. He is going to visit 13 countries on a bicycle.
An expedition is called «Terra America», and it will start
in Mexico. The man is planning to visit Guatemala, El
Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica,
Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina.
The traveler wants to see the monuments of ancient
civilizations and learn traditional local crafts.
The record of a Ukrainian equilibristics athlete:
on a rope between balloons
For the first time in the history of Ukraine it was possible to launch two air balloons connected by a strained rope, and
a highliner used it to break the record.
The brave record breaker is the well-known Ukrainian equilibristics athlete Stanislav Paniuta. According to UNN, the
record was set at an altitude of 660 meters.
«For the first time in the history of Ukraine it was possible to launch two air balloons connected by a strained rope,
and a highliner used it to break the record. The record was fixed by the National Register of Records of Ukraine at an
altitude of 660 meters,» the organizers say. The record was taken by the team of the Mongolfier Aeronautics Society and
Lucid dreams project, and the authors of the record were experienced pilots Serhii Skalko, Yurii Beidyk and a highliner
Stanislav Paniuta also known for his other achievements. For example, in 2016 he set the record for Ukraine, when he
walked along a tight rope between two 17-storey buildings (at an altitude of 70 meters).
The Murals Festival was launched in Dnipro
The festival of murals and monumental paintings
gathered artists in Dnipro. Their canvas are the walls of the
city’s high-rise buildings. For these purposes, they selected
10 tenement houses located in the residential areas of
Dnipro.
According to the organizers, the idea of such a festival
was conceived last year, so it took them a lot of time to
prepare everything. The main goal was to decorate the
city with beautiful drawings, make it more interesting and
lively. The organizers asked the masters to exclude political
motives from the pictures. The artists started working even
before the official beginning of the official. One of the
first pictures will depict a bird. Its author, Illiaa Kudynenko
chose it as a reminder to the residents and guests of Dnipro
that nature needs to be preserved. The bird depicted by
the author is the black-winged stilt. The bird is included
in the Red Book of Ukraine and is protected by other
international documents. The author of this mural is an
architect from Sloviansk, so he was also concerned about
how his work will fit into the overall urban landscape. It will
take Illia about 300 cans of paint and from 10 to 14 days to
make this picture.
In general, the festival will be held for a month. For
these purposes, 900 thousand UAH were allocated from
the budget of Dnipro. The funds of patrons have also been
attracted. A large fest will be completed by painting a
half-kilometer wall. Anyone willing to join this process will
get such an opportunity.
Kharkiv flower beds: located on water,
in a tube of paint and equipped with a 3D effect
This year Kharkiv has got unusual flower beds of
petunias, marigolds and other bright flowers in different
parts of the city. Representatives of the mayor’s office
say that more than a million plants have already been
planted, yet it is planned to make almost two more in
order to adorn the city this year.
One of the most unusual objects has appeared on
the Lopansky embankment, in the square «Strilka». Now
it is decorated with flower beds resembling huge lilies
and planted on water. According to the director of the
Department of communal services of the city council
Oleksii Bohach, it is possible to take care for these flowers
only by sailing closer on a boat. It is planned to supplement
the composition with elements of the national flag and
the city’s symbol. «In fact, it is not the first time we have
floating flower beds, but this time they are also moving
dynamically,» Bohach says.
A flower bed in the form of a palette and a tube of
paint has appeared on Poltavskyiv Shliakh Street near the
Southern Railway Station. On Novhorodska Street flower
beds are represented by isometric structures, which
stretched for 90 meters.
Oleksii Bohach mentions that it was quite hard
to create the latter ones because the slopes there are
not even - and so to plant 150 thousand flowers workers
had to install special metal systems. Employees of
«Kharkivzelenbud» are now working on a floral composition
on the Universytetska hill and a 100-meter inscription «We
love Kharkiv» on Derevianka Street. For the latter, they are
using 30,000 flowers, among which are iresine, petunias
and alternanthera. By design, the plants should generate
the 3D effect.
According to Bohach, it takes around one year from
the moment of the idea’s emergence to its realization.
«We choose the location and think about what to make
there, what would be interesting, relevant and beautiful.
We evaluate the events that are going to happen there,
the flowers’ lifetime, and still we need time to prepare,
cultivate, and then plant those flowers,» he says.
The official comments that such flower objects are
always made by local staff of Kharkivzelenbud. Almost
all the flowers are from local greenhouses. An exception
are frost-resistant flowers brought from Holland, which
managed to withstand the April snow and frost.
A Ukrainian has created an unusual all-terrain vehicle for
just two thousand dollars
A resident of Ternopil, Petro Holovatyi, has assembled
a unique, all-terrain tractor. It took him three years to create
this vehicle. After that he will test it on different types of
roads and coatings, te.ridna.ua reports.
«While I was doing it, my wife always scolded me for
constantly spending my time in the garage, for having
dirty clothes and not smelling nice. She told me that I had
exchanged the family for the tractor, and she was right:
every day after work I had dinner and went to the garage
to work there until about the midnight. It happened almost
every day,» the designer recalls.
«I created the plan and tasks for the main characteristics
of the car, and it was quite complicated: a full drive, locking
all the wheels for maximum traction and permeability,
complete control (simultaneous turning all the wheels) to
reduce the radius of turn, independent suspension of all the
wheels for accessibility and comfort, hydraulic disc brakes
of all the wheels for effective braking, many forward and
backward gears in order to better use the power of the
engine and to save fuel, a roof and a cargo platform to
protect against bad weather and to transport small cargoes
without a trailer, hanging for agricultural implements for
using the vehicle as a mini tractor. The rest of the secondary
characteristics I created with the idea of their best
implementation,» Petro Holovatyi said.
As for spare parts, the car represents almost all
domestic and Soviet car industry as the designer used spare
parts from different vehicles.
In addition to the time, the inventor spent 2,000 dollars
on the production of the car. Instead, he received a multipurpose
vehicle for house chores and leisure.
A Ukrainian will travel around Europe on foot
A Ukrainian veteran of the ATO, paratrooper Valerii
Ananiev is willing to start a pedestrian journey across Europe
to commemorate the visa-free regime of Ukraine. He told
about his plans to «Public Radio».
Valerii wants to follow the path of St. James – a famous
pilgrimage road. He will go through France, pass the Spanish
and French border, travel around Spain and reach the
coast of the Atlantic Ocean, at Cape Finisterre. There is a
small tower on this cape, and there the traveler will leave a
Ukrainian flag. In total he is planning to cover about 1500-
1600 kilometers. There is no religious or philosophical goal
now, however, Valerii hopes to find it on the road. Initially,
the campaign was supposed to be purely personal, but
then he decided to make it public. Valerii says he wants to
dispel the fears of some people about foreign trips. He will
travel alone, with a minimum of money, without knowledge
of foreign languages and with no experience of staying
abroad. He is planning to stay in monasteries at night. The
route will take him about two months. Valerii is planning to
make videos about his acquaintance with Europe and then
make a video diary.
«Dnipro Rocket City»:
what the new brand of Dnipro will be like
Internet users are involved in a vivid discussion of what
the new Dnipro brand will look like. The contest announced
by the «Agency for the development of Dnipro» was not
much advertised and the citizens hardly even noticed it. The
last day of the application was scheduled for June 23, 2017.
However, a few days before the deadline, social network
was filled up with posts on space calling for the maximum
integration of space topics into Dnipro’s new brand. That is
why the competition was extended until June 30, and the
results will be announced a little later.
The space industry market is $ 400 billion a year and
is steadily increasing. Ukraine is considered a cosmic state,
and the main city where the space industry is located is
Dnipro.
The construction bureaus «Pivdenne» and «Pivdennyi
mashynobudivnyi zavod» are on the balance sheet of the
«National Space Agency of Ukraine», but for many years they
have got almost no government orders and budget entries
for the industry’s development. The enterprises depend
fully on commercial contracts and participation in various
international projects.
Elon Musk called the Ukrainian carrier rocket Zenit the
best rocket after his rocket Falcon. The company Noosphere
actively invests in engineering and space startups, holds
contests with large prize funds and actively supports the
winners. They also opened Noosphere Engineering School
with a large technical laboratory on the basis of Dnipro
National University. In 2016 the company was the organizer
of the world championship in rocket modeling held in Lviv.
Founder of Noosphere Ventures, Maksym Poliakov bought the
assets of the space project Firefly Space Systems Aerospace
and restarted it under the name Firefly Aerospace.
The city has a full-scale space incubator Space Hub,
which constantly holds events to promote space innovations.
«The technological base of Dnipro is unique, and the city
will be a decent player in the global space industry,» Max
Tkachenko, the founder of Space Hub, says.
Rick Tumlinson, one of the Top 10 space innovators of
the world, has visited Dnipro for the second time this year. The
purpose of his visit is attracting venture capital to accelerate
the existing potential of the space city in the global cosmic
industry.
The space potential of the city of Dnipro where rockets
are created, is enormous. What brand the city will have
depends fully on the decision of its inhabitants.
According to the President, Ukrainian border crossing points will have
unified control with Slovak, Polish, Romanian and Hungarian partners
President Petro Poroshenko together with the
President of the Slovak Republic Andrej Kiska took part
in the symbolic opening ceremony of the doors to Europe
on the Slovak and Ukrainian border to celebrate the
introduction of the visa-free regime between Ukraine and
the countries of the Schengen area.
«To be honest, we have been waiting for this for a
long time. And this is a historical moment when we destroy
the paper curtain that separated Ukraine from Europe,»
Petro Poroshenko said during the ceremony.
The Head of State stressed: «This means that Ukraine
has conducted enormous reforms. Together we have
changed our country. Our European partners have kept
their word and have opened the doors to the European
Union, the doors of our friends and partners. All of them
are open for our great 45 million nation, for the Ukrainian
people.»
Petro Poroshenko is convinced that this day will
forever be remembered in the history of Ukraine as the
final exit of our state from the Russian Empire and the
return of Ukraine to the family of European nations.
He recalled that it was precisely for the sake of these
values, European values, that three and a half years ago,
Ukrainians started the Revolution of Dignity, demanding
reforms and European integration.
«And today the will of the people is implemented,
and we have achieved the first and extremely important
results. Right now our freedom and democracy are being
defended by the best Ukrainians - the soldiers of the
Armed Forces and other armed groups in the East of our
state,» the President mentioned.
According to him, today this right can be used by
every Ukrainian with a biometric passport, and there are
more than 4 million Ukrainians with that type of document.
«To date, these passports do not require any visas, no
paperwork, no fees, no queues,» the President added.
Petro Poroshenko stressed that the value of the
Ukrainian passport has increased significantly since that
day. «Today, every Ukrainian can have an opportunity to
have a fantastic coffee in Bratislava, fly on a lowcoster to
Warsaw, or visit the Viennese opera,» he said.
The President also stressed that the Ukrainian
authorities are doing everything possible to make such
trips to Europe more accessible. «We have launched new
trains to neighboring European countries, our customs
and border services are arranging checkpoints. We will
conduct joint control with our Slovak, Polish, Romanian
and Hungarian partners as a symbol of friendship and trust
between our countries,» Petro Poroshenko said.
«I want to say that the more progress we are making
on the path of reform, the more facts I and the Ukrainian
people can provide in order to win the possibility of
membership of Ukraine in the European Union,» the
President said. He also noted that, according to Article 49
of Rome Statute, Ukraine is a European state.
The Head of the Ukrainian State thanked the President
of Slovakia for his strong support for Ukraine’s territorial
integrity, sovereignty, independence and Ukrainian
reforms. «This is the position of a real friend and partner,»
he said.
Petro Poroshenko stressed: «We are confident that
together with such reliable friends and lawyers of Ukraine
in the European Union, we will be able to continue our
path of reforms, to continue the fundamental European
changes of our state and our return to Europe. I have
every reason to be confident in that.»
The President of the Slovak Republic, Andrej Kiska,
congratulated Ukraine on introducing the visa-free
regime and stressed that this day was important not
only for Ukrainians, but also for the Slovak people: «Dear
neighbors, we welcome you in Europe». «A lot of efforts,
a lot of hard work made this day come true. Ukraine has
fulfilled its promises, as well as the European Union has,»
he said.
Andrej Kiska called on Ukraine to continue reforms.
«Slovakia and its politicians will support your state so that
it will come to the European Union, to which you belong,»
the President of Slovakia promised.
№40, July 2017
According to the Head of State, Ukraine has started talks on cancellation
of roaming charges for Ukrainians on the territory of the EU
The introduction of the visa-free regime for Ukrainian
citizens has not only symbolic but also practical value for the
state and its people, President Petro Poroshenko emphasizes.
«The authorities have fulfilled the reformist plan on
visa liberalization. Now we are working on making the visa
free access available to more Ukrainians. We are opening
relatively inexpensive railway connection, reducing the
cost of aviation flights, attracting low prices and lowering
the price of aviation companies’ tickets,» the Head of State
mentioned in his speech on the Evropeiska square.
Petro Poroshenko also said that he can announce more
pleasant news - Ukraine has begun talks on cancellation
of roaming charges for Ukrainians. «In my talks with the
leadership of the European Union and with the leaders
of the member countries, we have begun a struggle to
abolish roaming charges for Ukrainians on the territory of the
European Union,» he said.
In addition, the President said that the authorities are
working on increasing the capacity of the border posts. After
all, according to the State Migration Service, more than four
million citizens have already received biometric passports.
«This refutes the assertion that Ukrainians do not need them.
10% of Ukrainians have already received them as and
they are necessary in order to take advantage of visa-free
travel. The queue of those who want such a document is still
impressive,» the Head of State said.
«But I want to reassure everyone, please do not worry.
I emphasize that there are enough passports for all citizens,
and the documents will be issued even after June 11th. The
visa-free regime has a beginning, but there will be no end to
it. We are all sure about this, because I believe in the great
future of a strong, united Europe, which is on our side,» Petro
Poroshenko added.
The President also reminded that the start of the visafreeze
was complemented with another extraordinary
event, which was the completion of the ratification of the
Association Agreement with the European Union, the struggle
for which was commenced three and a half years ago on
Maidan Nezalezhnosti. The other day King of the Netherlands
Willem-Alexander signed the law by which his country gave
the green light to the Association. «His Majesty put an end to
this issue, and our diplomats and the entire team had had to
work hard to achieve that. Now, we are all waiting for a long
and hard work on the implementation of this Agreement,»
the Head of State said.
Youth Day in Ukraine 2017
A fun and carefree holiday, Youth Day 2017, was
traditionally celebrated in Ukraine on the last Sunday of
June. During the weekend of June 24-25 Ukrainians held
many bright and interesting events, including concerts,
festivals, contests and even a sports night marathon for the
most active young residents of Kyiv.
In Ukraine, the Youth Day is set as a holiday by the
Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 323/94 from
June 22, 1994, by the Decree of the President from June
27, 2008, No. 599 «On the Day of Youth and Children’s
Public Organizations» and the Decree No. 600/2011 «On
Amendments to the Decree of the President of Ukraine
from June 27, 2008 No. 599». It is celebrated annually on
the last Sunday of June and is known as the Youth Day.
A lot of people believe that youth is one of the
brightest and happiest periods in life. In comparison with
other holidays, this day almost doesn’t have traditions.
To celebrate it, people hold various festivals, concerts,
exhibitions and entertainment events. Sports competitions
are especially popular, because sport is an important part
of life. Usually, at the end of the celebration, people make
a grand salute and organize concerts with the participation
of talented performers, invite dance ensembles and
representatives of dance schools. Recently, fireworks
shows have gained popularity: it is a vibrant entertainment
that consists of acrobatic numbers and fire manipulations.
A lot of youths prefers to continue the celebration in cafes,
pubs, restaurants or clubs. It is common to celebrate Youth
Day with flash mobs, in which everyone can take part, and
it is considered an extraordinary experience.
Being young is not only a wonderful period, but also a
special state of mind. Therefore, Youth Day is considered a
holiday of creativity, energy and the implementation of the
most daring plans. As modern students and future young
workers will one day determine the ways of our country’s
development, the state is taking measures to encourage
them to study and work. After all, caring for young people
is an important part of social work. It is difficult to disagree
with the fact that they are our state’s future, and what our
life will look like in future depends only on them, as well as
like its image on the world arena.
Congratulations from the President on the occasion of Youth Day
Dear friends!
I am happy to congratulate you on Youth Day.
There is no better period in our life than youth. This is the time of personal formation, planning of the future, educating
yourself, making new discoveries and the first professional accomplishments.
Today is the time of great hopes and expectations. Recently Ukrainians have got visa-free regime with the countries of
the European Union, thus destroying the wall, which separated Ukraine from Europe. I am convinced that without your
decisive and uncompromising struggle for the European choice, this day would never have happened.
Young boys and girls, with their bright thoughts, great patriotism, energy and goodness in their hearts, heroically fight
with evil and injustice.
I am proud that our young people have always been at the forefront of historical changes and the struggle for Ukraine’s
independence – from the Heroes of the Battle of Kruty, from the first students’ tents of the Revolution on the Granite,
from the Orange Revolution to the EuroMaidan, the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and the “cyborgs”. Today, the best
Ukrainians - the soldiers of the Armed Forces and other military formations – are defending our freedom in the East of the
country.
I believe that Ukraine will never leave the path to democracy, because the new generation is a generation of free people.
I sincerely wish you success, inexhaustible creativity and energy.
My congratulations on Youth Day!
The Ukrainian flag brought together children
from 22 countries
Kyiv held the International Art Competition «My Flag
is Where I Am». It brought together 86 children from the
Ukrainian diaspora from 22 countries starting from the USA
to Australia.
Under the terms of the contest, the children depicted
the most famous landscapes of the countries they live
in but the main hero of each «story» was the Ukrainian
yellow-and-blue flag.
120 drawings decorated the Gallery of the
Presidential Administration Second Floor Art Center. 16
works were selected to participate in the exhibition - 16
stories of children, families of which for various reasons left
Ukraine but kept it in the heart. Even far away from the
motherland these people remain Ukrainians and bring up
their children in the same way.
The participants of the exhibition were: Andrii Nosiar
(Germany), Pericles Agriopoulos (Greece), Maria Liash
(Ireland), Roman Vitsiak (Portugal), Diana Tymchuk (Italy),
Bohdan Lubiv (Spain), Karina Malovshek (Slovenia),
Bohdana Studenkova (Slovakia), Valeria Christensen
(Denmark), Dania Trochinska Rute (Estonia), Valeria
Istomina and Iryna Istomina (Switzerland), Yana Kysyliova
(China), Stefania Mandzii and Sofia Mandzii (Australia),
Maria Marchuk (the USA) and Hryhorii Kuka (Russia).
The winner of the contest was Melissa Dovhyi from
Brazil, a Ukrainian of descent. Her ancestors moved 100
years ago to Brazil in search of a better luck. She does not
speak Ukrainian but takes pride in her roots.
The person who organized and inspired the project,
Maria Kovalevska, artist, designer, teacher, member of
the Union of Artists of Ukraine, says: «The exhibition «My
Flag is Where I Am» is an important and unprecedented
event for the newest Ukraine. The President opened the
doors to the Administration for children, opened the door
of «the authority» to those who will define the future of
Ukraine. As a curator, I am extremely happy to be so lucky
as to help the voices of Ukrainian children sound in the
midst of the cruelty of the adult world, to make people
listen and pay attention to what they think!»
Silver Tatosh 2017:
knights, horses and the spirit of the Middle Ages
But for guests in jeans and T-shirts, short dresses or
shorts, with iPhones and cameras, a person arriving to
Chynadiyovo last weekend could easily think that he was
in the Middle Ages.
The old castle, horses, armored knights, women
in historical clothing, antiques and the atmosphere of
a fairy tale - this year’s Silver Tatosh was like a carnival.
Occasionally, things of the present day reminded us that
we were in the 21st century, however, in general, the
atmosphere was as if moved to the past.
The festival is held for the sixth time in the ancient castle
of Saint-Miklos, in Chynadiyovo. It brings together the best
knights from all over Ukraine and from other countries such
as Belarus, Moldova and Hungary. The main features of the
Silver Tatosh are knight fights, medieval reconstructions,
and crafts workshops.
This year the guests could also enjoy an interesting
horse program. In addition to demonstrative performances,
visitors could see a true equestrian tournament. The
spectacle was exciting! There were pairings, and teams,
and joint battles - when two armies attack each other. To
tell the truth, it was very striking and even a bit frightening.
The costumes were thought out to the smallest detail. The
16

№40, July 2017
concept of the Middle Ages was predominant across the
festival. Children could play in a special entertainment zone
called «Tatoshyk» (“Small Tatosh”). The most daring young
knights could engage in fights, however, with soft swords
and toy weapons. Literature lovers had the opportunity to
listen to new talented authors and read their own poetry
at the separate literary area «Litatosh», the highlight of
which was a mystical theatrical performance by the fire,
as well as a Sunday competition among young poets
from different parts of Ukraine. This year the organizers
also presented medieval food for the festival’s guests:
during the event, people could visit «Full Tatosh» and try
traditional and modern dishes prepared according to old
recipes. The festival also impressed its guests with quality
music: the band «Irdorath» from Belarus was the headliner.
Other performers were the popular Western Ukrainian
band «Chalamada» and guests from Hungary «Hollóének
Hungarica».
The audience of the festival could see with their own
eyes that medieval battles are exhausting as you get tired
quickly, but it is really worth the effort!
A huge sports arena-transformer will be built in Kyiv
Next year, the capital will begin construction of a grand
sports complex, which can be adapted for different sports, as
well as used as a concert hall or an exhibition complex.
The multifunctional sports arena-transformer will be built on
Vatutina avenue at an area of 1.5 hectares.
«The total area is almost 14 thousand square meters. The
sports arena will accommodate from 4.5 to almost 8 thousand
spectators, depending on the type of the sporting event. It will
be possible to hold football, basketball, athletics and other
competitions here,» the mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko explained.
The building company notes that now the project is in its
design stage, and it is planned to start the construction in 10
months. «The estimated cost of investment in the construction
is about 270 million UAH,» the representative of the building
company Yuliia Vanchenko says.
Zhytomyr Oblast is planning to install 30 solar-powered
lighting systems
UNIAN reports it citing information from Zhytomyr Regional
State Administration. The project provides for the transfer of the
Kyiv-Chop highway to an outsourcing contractor, which will be
determined by the results of the tender.
«Within the project realization we plan to install 10 traffic
lights and 30 modern pedestrian lighting systems that will
work on solar panels on the Zhytomyr part of the international
highway. We take into account the high accident areas,» the
head of the department of Industry, Infrastructure and Tourism
of the Zhytomyr Regional State Administration Roman Krysiuk
said. The contracting organization, among other things, will
carry out maintenance of the road: repair the asphalt covering,
apply markings, repair the barrier fences, remove snow, and
clean the garbage.
Funds for this project are provided by the International
Monetary Fund. The cost of the project will be determined after
its approval and making estimates.
We shall remind you that Minister of Infrastructure
Volodymyr Omelian said that deaths on Ukrainian roads cost
the Ukrainian economy 1.5-2% of GDP or $ 4.5 billion annually.
Museum of Apple Rarities was opened in Kyiv
Now Ukrainians can see how the products of the wellknown
company Apple have progressed without going to the
United States of America.
Rare products of the well-known brand can now be seen
in Ukraine. For this, residents and guests of the Ukrainian capital
only have to visit the office of MacPaw company. The American
collection was placed there.
What can one see at the Apple Rarities Museum? First
of all, it’s Apple IIc, which was the predecessor of the wellknown
Macintosh. Another exhibition is Lisa, the anniversary
20th Anniversary Mac, Macintosh 128k. Lovers and connoisseurs
of computer equipment will be especially pleased with the
computer signed by Steve Wozniak. The museum includes not
only exhibits from beyond the ocean. The team of the Ukrainian
company MacPaw has also gathered a lot of samples of the old
Apple equipment. These are, in particular, old iPhone samples.
They also have profile literature devoted to the design of Apple,
and posters Think different.
Founder and CEO of MacPaw and Setapp Oleksandr
Kosovan is a devoted fan of the brand. He decided to make
a museum in Kyiv as a tribute to Apple. «Apple changed my
life dramatically. I followed the principles of simplicity and
convenience inherited from Steve, I used similar approaches to
create my company and MacPaw products. MacPaw Museum
is my gratitude to Apple for creating generations of unique
products that have changed the world,» Kosovan explains.
The exhibition will operate on a regular basis, but it is
not accessible to the general public: to see it, one will need
to register for a tour held in MacPaw on a regular basis. The
entrance is free. «Everyone who comes to us for events and
excursions can take a look at the exhibition. We plan to repair
all the computers and show how they work,» Yuliia Petryk, the
representative of MacPaw comments.
The winners of the Aviator-2017 contest visited France
One hundred Ukrainian technical students attended
the prestigious aviation forum Paris Air Show 2017 Le
Bourget and Disneyland.
The trip of one hundred talented and purposeful
students to Paris is the result of their participation in the
large-scale educational project «Aviator 2017», which was
conducted by Borys Kolesnikov’s Charitable Foundation
for the sixth consecutive time.
Among 6500 contestants, the expert jury headed
by the well-known designer Dmytro Kiva identified one
hundred best participants who got the opportunity to
visit the largest profile exhibition in the world, see the
achievements of world aviation, take on the experience
of foreign specialists and in the future try to apply it for the
benefit of Ukraine.
Traditionally, the Parisian Salon Le Bourget 2017 was
also visited by the President of the Charitable Foundation,
Borys Kolesnikov. Together with the young aviation elite,
he became acquainted with the stands of the leaders of
the world’s aircraft industry and their latest developments,
and visited the start-up and novelty laboratory Paris Air
Lab. In his greetings, Borys Kolesnikov says that trips to
international profile forums stimulate students to continue
self-development, study foreign languages, and set the
right goals. In addition, staying at the Paris Air Show 2017
Le Bourget on business days gives young professionals an
understanding of how key players in the global aviation
market make millions of deals and look for business
partners, how to get a dream job and present themselves
to potential employers.
«Talented Ukrainian students came to Le Bourget in
Paris to learn about the trends of world aviation and set
20

№40, July 2017
optimistic goals for the future. These guys will return home
and build even better planes than those we have seen
here, I do not doubt it. «Aviator» provides the opportunity
for talented young people to see the latest developments
and achievements of the aerospace industry, as well
as to understand that our domestic aviation is not the
worst in the world. During the six years of the project’s
existence, it became clear that we may have crises but
the country should support its specialists,» Borys Kolesnikov
emphasizes. The head of the jury of the project «Aviator
2017»Dmytro Kiva notes that he is takes pride in the winners
of the competition, their level of preparation, investment
projects and inventions.
As part of a trip to France, one hundred winners also
saw the main landmarks of Paris and visited Disneyland.
After two busy days and meetings held at Le Bourget, it
was an active and well-deserved way of having rest.
«Not all parents could afford to send their child to
Disneyland, it is true for almost all my peers. However,
dreams come true, though not in childhood, but in
adulthood, and it is so great! Rides, Mickey Mouse, Snow
White - I’m happy to be part of all this,» Hanna Serheeva,
a student at the National Aviation University, comments.
One hundred winners of «Aviator-2017» also wandered
around Paris and saw its main landmarks. They saw the
Triumphal Arch, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Champs
Elysees, and took a lot of bright and memorable photos.
«We will have enough impression to live until the launch
of Aviator-2018,» the students say, and it is already very
soon: the new season of the project starts this autumn.
Ukrainian volleyball players are winners of the
Euroleague-2017
This weekend in Gentofte (Denmark), the men’s team of
Ukraine successfully held the final of the volleyball contest
Euroleague 2017 and got a pass to the elite World League.
It was the first time our compatriots took part in the
tournament. In the final their counterpart was the double
finalist of the Euroleague – the team of Macedonia.
Three consecutive victories at the start of the first part
of the final set the rhythm for all further confrontation. The
«killer shots» of the blue and yellow team, together with the
correct strategy, resulted in a wonderful “25:15”.
In the following sets Macedonians managed to reduce
the gap, but failed to take control of the game. As a result,
the tournament ended with a complete triumph of the
national team of Ukraine (3:1). The bronze medal of the
competition was given to the team of Denmark.
Ukrainian fencers are European vice-champions
The Ukrainian men’s team won the silver awards of the
European Fencing Championship on Spurs, which is taking
place these days in the capital of Georgia.
On the way to the award, the blue and yellow team
consisting of Bohdan Nikishyn, Dmytro Kariuchenko, Anatolii
Herei, and Vitalii Medvedev defeated Finns with the score of
45:24 and Hungarians with the score of 45:39. In the semi-final
match our compatriots bypassed the athletes from the Czech
Republic with the score of 18:14. Only in the decisive difficult fight
they were defeated by Russians (32:33). This is the first award in
the national team’s qualification for this championship.
Ukrainians won the title of European Champions 2017
Silver winners of last year’s world championship
Maksym Dolhov and Oleksandr Horshkovozov won
European Championships-2017 on Diving.
Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Ihor Zhdanov
congratulated our athletes on the triumph and noted
their high skill and the will to win in an uncompromising
struggle.
«We are proud of you, guys! One more time the
Ukrainian anthem is proudly sung at the European
championship, which is taking place in Kyiv. Thus, the
organizers of the competition, our athletes and their
coaches prove that Ukraine is a powerful European sports
state. Ukraine is Europe!» the Minister stressed.
This is the second gold medal and the fifth award
in the national team’s assets. Ukrainians went up to the
first stage of the tournament table of synchronous jumps
from the ten-meter tower and confidently bypassed
their closest rivals, Russians, by almost 25 points (with the
score of 431.28 points). The bronze medal in this discipline
was given to the British duo Noah Williams and Matthew
Dickson (388.05).
The Ukrainian national athletics team won the
Superleague of the European Multisport Championship
During almost all the tournament the Ukrainian team was
ranked second, following the Estonians, but in the final our
compatriots managed to beat the hosts of the competition and
win with the result of 40085 points.
Alina Shukh scored 6208 points for heptathlon beating
Valentyna Savchenko’s 33-year-old record (6179 points), and
also met the standard for participation in the World Cup. Oleksii
Kasianov was leading after heptathlon, but the javelin throw
changed the situation. At the final 1500 meters Kasianov was
second, and Vasyl Ivanytskyiv - fourth. In the end, the situation
remained the same. For the sum of decathlon Kasianov scored
7958 points. Only one athlete scored more – the Estonian Janek
Oiglane (8170). The second day of the European Multisport
Championship Oleksii began with winning the 110-meter race
with barriers (13.98 seconds), throwing discus at 41.42 m, pole
vaulting with a 4.60-meter long pole, throwing javelin to 49.93 m
and running 1500 meters within 4.36.83 min.
Vasyl Ivanytskyi set his personal record by scoring 7801
points for the sum of heptathlon. On the second day he showed
the following results: 110-meter race with barriers - 14,62 sec,
discus throw - 40,48 m, pole vaulting - 4,60 m, javelin throw -
58,44 m. He also broke another personal record by running 1500
meters within 4.32.26 min (personal record). Ruslan Malohlovets
also spent the second day of the competition under the sign
of personal records. He started the day by running 110-meter
race with barriers within 14,70 sec. Other records were throwing
javelin at a record 45.28 m and running 1500 meters for 4.39.14
min. Discus throwing (38.69 m) and pole vaulting (4.30 m),
however, failed to bring him any new victories. He was ranked
14th with the score of 7160 points. Valentyn Oliynyk was ranked
18th (his score was 6817 points: 110-meter race with barriers
- 15.73 sec, discus throwing - 36.68 m, pole vaulting - 4.40 m
(repetition of a personal record), javelin throw - 44.23 m, running
1500 m - 4.49.12 min).
Ihor Zhdanov: Our national team’s victory at the Euro-2017
on Diving is a joint victory of all Ukrainians
Kyiv held the latest stage of diving continental
championships 2017.
During one week, athletes of the Ukrainian national team
got medals ten times. The anthem of Ukraine honored the
European champions – Illia Kvasha, Hanna Pysmenska, and the
duo of Maksym Dolhov and Oleksandr Horshkovozov.
Viktoriia Kesar together with Oleksandr Horshkovozov and
Stanislav Oliferchyk won two silver awards. Two silver medals
were also given to Illia Kvasha: one for individual jumps and the
other – for the pair performance with Oleh Kolodii.
Bronze was given to Anastasiia Nedobiha, Oleh Kolodii
and debutants of the championship – Valeriia Liuliuko together
with Sofiia Lyskun.
The number of the awards is the new record for the blue
and yellow team. Last year in London they gathered eight
medals.
In addition, our compatriots got the main trophy of the
competition. Nobody knew, which team scored the greatest
number of points, until the last minutes of the contest. As a
result, with a score of 244 points Ukrainian divers defeated
the Russian team and for the first time in history won the team
championship.
Minister of Youth and Sports Ihor Zhdanov congratulated
all the participants of this event on the triumph.
«I congratulate all the team of the organizing committee,
volunteers, the Diving Federation and personally Ihor Lysov.
My congratulations to the athletes, coaches led by Tamara
Tokmacheva on this huge, tremendous success. I thank you
for the hard work and high skill, and the will to win - our team
surpassed all expectations. I also want to express my sincere
gratitude to the Ukrainian fans. Their fierce, very cool, cohesive,
and patriotic support gave our athletes a lot of energy and
inspiration. I congratulate all Ukraine. This is our common
European victory!» Ihor Zhdanov said.
event took place as part of Alfa Jazz Fest and became
the platform for the presentation of the latest infrastructure
project, as well as discussions on IT education, investment
and state’s role in IT development.
Innovation District IT Park is a project developed
by Lviv IT Cluster. It will occupy an area of 10 hectares,
which will accommodate six eight-storey office buildings,
two business centers, a shopping center, the Faculty of
Information Technologies of the Ukrainian Catholic University
and the IT Laboratory, accessible to students of all Lviv
technological universities, as well as a kindergarten, a hotel,
an amphitheater for conducting events and a big recreation
area.
The district’s construction will have two phases. The first
will last for two and a half years: during this time, it is planned
to spend $ 95 million and build six eight-storey buildings,
a multifunctional center with service, entertainment and
shopping areas, a fitness room, a kindergarten and a
university with laboratories. In total, it will occupy 70 thousand
square meters.
Lviv IT Cluster is a community that brings together Lviv
leading IT companies and works on developing its own
industry and the city in general: conducting thematic events,
analyzing Lviv IT market and educational initiatives. The
projects of the Cluster include building IT House (housing for
workers of the field).
The first investor of Innovation District IT Park was
Galereja Center and the developer Volodymyr Zhenchak
who had previously built Forum Lviv. The investment manager
of the project, Olha Mandziuk emphasizes that Lviv IT Cluster
was aiming at not dividing the project into many phases,
to immediately provide IT companies not only with office
buildings, but also with infrastructure and educational
elements.
Among the first residents of the district are such
companies as SoftServe, N-iX, Global Logic, Intellias, and
Perfectial. Representatives of these companies note that it is
difficult to find high-quality office premises in Lviv, though the
need for them grows every year, and not only in IT industry.
Lviv IT Cluster Supervisory Board Chairman, CEO
and co-founder of N-iX, future resident of the park
One of Lviv IT Cluster’s missions is developing
education and human capital in the city. IT companies
will guarantee that the project will be profitable. They
are the park’s first tenants and it is probable that they
will be the only residents. Now the companies involved
in Lviv IT Cluster organize laboratories and establish new
curricula in different universities. It will be much more
convenient when there will be a university as an object,
and on its basis, Lviv IT Cluster could make laboratories,
which will be divided among all Lviv universities with IT
specialties.
The idea of a cluster is not competition but
collaboration, which can be implemented in IT Park
with the help of working with large system clients when
different companies have different specializations.
Therefore, each of them can have projects from a large
client who can be attracted by the scale of the object
and the number of companies that will be its residents.
First Vice-Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University
Why are we interested in being part of this project? Any
university should believe in cooperation and collaboration.
It is not just about creating new programs or schools, but
about the style and culture of work itself.
As we learned by working with IT companies and Lviv
IT Cluster, they are guided by the principle that success is
not only «faster, more, and more efficient». It’s also «more
beautiful, nobler, better».
Each university must develop and offer new interesting
programs. However, the center of all innovations should be
its students. That is why we have to ask ourselves «What is
better for our students? What should we do to help them
study better and be more efficient? «
The product of universities is creative people who will
then engage in creative projects. This is not easy. In order
to educate such a person, we need creative environment.
Innovation District IT Park can be such creative environment
thanks to the cooperation of various players playing the
win-win game. But for this we need to ensure that there are
different residents, not only those from IT. It should be an
interdisciplinary environment that brings people together.
IT people should communicate with representatives of
business, law, philosophy, art, ethics and many other fields.
We are starting to talk about a creative economy.
We do not want to follow this global trend, but to lead it.
We are interested in making projects that have not yet
been made in Ukraine and, possibly, in the world. I am
sure that this project is a unique example of synergy and
is only the beginning of the creative class and economy,
and those changes that are waiting for us in Lviv. In this
place extraordinary companies and startups will start to
appear, as well as unique Ukrainian products.
Congratulations on Eid al-Fitr!
The holiday of Eid al-Fitr, also known as Uraza Bayram, is a festival of Muslim nations. It is preceded by a 30-day
fasting, which begins on the first day of the new moon of the month of Ramadan (or Ramazan). As people say, it was this
month that Mohammed entered the defeated Mecca and the Muslims received the Quran.
The word «Ramadan» means «scorching heat», which means that this month, while people keep fasting, they «burn»
all their sins. The door of hell is shut and the door of paradise is open. Only pregnant women and nursing mothers, sick,
travelers and military personnel do not have to observe the fasting.
Along with the fasting, Islam states that Muslims should do good things, feed the hungry, invite at least one fasting
man and feed him or her. This dinner can be not luxurious, and it is not necessary to serve it for a lot of people. It will be
enough to feed just one person. If the host is poor, it is enough just to give the guest some water.
Every day of the fast is devoted to prayers, reading the Quran, devotional thoughts and work. This month, you can
beg the Almighty forgiveness for your sins and prepare yourself for any future trials.
The lunar fast ends on the night of divine appointment and feast of breaking the fast. This is the night of «determining
human destinies, the night of power». It is believed that this particular night Allah determines the fate of each person for
the whole year.
For each believer this holiday means sharing the common joy of people of the same religion. It is also a good
opportunity to replenish the spiritual experience. The feast of breaking the fast for a Muslim is, first and foremost, the
farewell to the blessed days of the month of Ramadan, when each Muslim was given a good opportunity to grow
spiritually, to curb passions by fasting, reach piety, and help those in need.
The editorial board of the magazine «Viva Ukraine» congratulates all Muslims on the bright holiday of Eid al-Fitr. We
wish the Almighty to accept your fasting and to listen to your prayers and give your family and friends health and peace.
Congratulations from the President to the Muslims of Ukraine
Dear compatriots!
I congratulate you on Uraza Bayram, the holiday that marks the end of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.
It symbolizes commitment to family values, responsiveness to those in need, mercy and reconciliation. These immutable
virtues bring people together, preserve peace and harmony.
I wish you and your family good health, harmony and wealth. May the blessed hour of the holiday fill your hearts with
the warmth of love, give you joy and bring success in all good deeds.
