Almond Acres Charter Academy Open Enrollment for <strong>2014</strong>/2015<br />

January 15 marked the start of<br />

Almond Acres Charter Academy’s<br />

3rd Annual Open Enrollment<br />

Period for the <strong>2014</strong>-2015 school<br />

year in San Miguel. Those interested<br />

in attending AACA next<br />

year are encouraged to submit a<br />

Request for Enrollment which can<br />

be found on the AACA website<br />

www.aacacademy.com. Requests<br />

for K-8th grade are being accepted.<br />

Open Enrollment will extend<br />

through March 15. If at the<br />

end of Open Enrollment there are<br />

more applicants than spaces available<br />

a random public lottery will<br />

take place. AACA is hosting the<br />

remaining campus tour on <strong>February</strong><br />

20 at 9 a.m. to include classroom<br />

tours and the opportunity to meet<br />

with the Executive Director, Bob<br />

Bourgault. Events will focus on<br />

AACA’s learning philosophies and<br />

what makes AACA unique.<br />

Almond Acres Charter Academy<br />

provides families in northern<br />

SLO County with an additional<br />

choice in public education. AACA<br />

is a public tuition free K-8 school<br />

that incorporates a strong core<br />

curriculum, arts, language, technology,<br />

character development and<br />

service learning into a small classsized<br />

learning environment. AACA<br />

employs credentialed teachers,<br />

participates in state testing, and<br />

is open to all students in all communities,<br />

without the need of an<br />

interdistrict transfer or release<br />

from their district of residence.<br />

AACA students wear uniforms<br />

and parents of AACA are required<br />

to fulfill a family participation<br />

requirement. A bus transports<br />

students from Paso Robles both<br />

before and after school and is<br />

funded by the students riding the<br />

bus.<br />

and was founded by a group<br />

of parents, educators, and community<br />

Cappy Culver Student is Runner-Up in National Essay Competition<br />

Mrs. Gray, the eighth grade<br />

teacher at Cappy Culver Elementary<br />

began the school year by<br />

challenging her students to write<br />

narrative and informative essays.<br />

During this process she gave<br />

her students the option to enter<br />

the Scholastic Hunger Games:<br />

Catching Fire Essay National<br />

Competition.<br />

Annabelle Tolle, one of Mrs.<br />

Gray’s students, stepped up to the<br />

challenge. Annabelle aspires to become<br />

an author one day and can<br />

always be found reading and writing<br />

short stories along with being a<br />

huge Hunger Games fan. Annabelle<br />

won the Daughters of the American<br />

Revolution essay competition<br />

last year.<br />

This year, Annabelle<br />

was one of ten runnerups<br />

in the Catching<br />

Fire Essay Competition.<br />

There were over 2000<br />

entries and hers was<br />

picked as one of the very<br />

best. Annabelle received<br />

a letter of recognition<br />

from Scholastic along<br />

with a Suzanne Collins set<br />

of books, including Hunger<br />

Games trilogy in hardback<br />

and also the Gregor the Underlander<br />

set of five books all<br />

written by Suzanne Collins.<br />

Annabelle is currently<br />

working on character and<br />

plot development for a young<br />

adult book that she is writing.<br />
