Robles City Library’s 8th Annual<br />

Brushmarks Juried Art Competition<br />

for Teens. Submissions will<br />

be accepted<br />

on Wednesday,<br />

30, in three<br />

categories -<br />

painting, drawing, and, new this<br />

year to commemorate the city’s<br />

125th Anniversary, a special Anniversary<br />

Celebration category.<br />

A small entry fee is charged<br />

to enter the event. Winners in<br />

each category will be selected<br />

by Juror Jack Johnson and<br />

prizes, donated by Johnson,<br />

will be awarded at the Gallery<br />

Children’s Library<br />

The Children’s Library has a<br />

new computer! Not connected<br />

to the Internet and designed<br />

specifically for younger children<br />

with a primary-color keyboard<br />

and smaller mouse, the AWE<br />

computer is loaded with many<br />

fun and educational preschool<br />

games in such subjects as math<br />

and problem-solving; science<br />

and nature; social science and<br />

geography; reading and phonics;<br />

writing and computer skills; and<br />

music and art.<br />

The Namesake discussion<br />

The public is invited to join<br />

the discussion of Jhumpa Lahiri’s<br />

The Namesake, on Thursday,<br />

Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Library<br />

conference room.<br />

The Namesake takes the Ganguli<br />

family from their traditionbound<br />

life in Calcutta through<br />

their fraught transformation into<br />

Americans. Named for a Russian<br />

writer by his Indian parents in<br />

memory of a catastrophe years<br />

before, Gogol Ganguli knows<br />

only that he suffers the burden<br />

of his heritage as well as his odd,<br />

antic name.<br />

Lahiri brings great empathy to<br />

Gogol as he stumbles<br />

along the firstgeneration<br />

path,<br />

strewn with conflicting<br />

loyalties,<br />

comic detours, and<br />

wrenching love affairs.<br />

With penetrating<br />
