Why Choose Art?
Teaching approaches
The course is orientated towards Fine Art. However, within this main area of study candidates will be
given the opportunity to pursue different specialisms such as printmaking, painting and drawing, 3
dimensional design, sculpture and Photography. The “Personal Investigation” may be in any
specialist art and design field and can be a combination of practical explorations and written research.
The two-year course represents a gradual progression of activity leading from a highly taught centre
of activity in the first term to individual and student centered activity in the later part of the course.
Art and Design is essential for anyone who wishes to undertake further studies in Art and Design at
University (Art College) or for those of you who are looking to take up a career for which an art and
design background is relevant. We send students to leading art institutes, such as Central St Martins
and Chelsea.
Entry requirements
The nature of Art and Design requires students with a genuine interest in the subject and a high
degree of self-motivation. A large amount of the work for assessment is completed outside the
timetable structure. You must be keen, well-motivated and be able to work on extended research
assignments. If you have an aptitude for the subject and if you are creative you may have the basic
skills to succeed, but hard work and determination is the key to success. AS/A level Art and Design is
not an easy option and you should be prepared to work hard to succeed in developing your abilities.
AS Units
Unit F410-F416: Coursework Portfolio
• Candidates produce a portfolio of work from starting points/topics or themes to include
figurative painting, life drawing, sculpture.
• The focus is on including work that shows exploration, research, acquisition of techniques and
skills.
Unit F410-F416: Controlled Assignment
• Candidates select one starting point from an early release question paper.
• Candidates are to be given at least three weeks in which to plan and prepare.
• Candidates are then given five hours of controlled time to work on developing
their ideas to realization(s)/outcome(s).
