In January, 2010 After 16 years’ continuous board membership outgoing president Terry King was made a life member of the federation at his final annual general meeting in Christchurch in As the longest continuous serving board member in Grey Power’s 30-year history, celebrated this year, it was timely to reflect on Terry’s contribution to the progress of Grey Power. It was noted that Terry became a board member in 2000 and from 2002 onwards was the top polling candidate at every Federation AGM until the introduction of the 2012 Modernisation Plan which disestablished six AGM-appointed board members. From the outset he strongly believed in the aims and objectives of Grey Power, a team approach and accountability to the membership Concerning Grey Power NZ Federation his CV every year stated he stood for the following: • A dynamic, vital and growing organization • A higher public profile at national level • Effective lobbying based on professional research • Clear communication between the Federation board and associations Over the years and through changing board membership, Terry has encouraged support for these ideals. He served with four national presidents, John Jefferson, Graham Stairmand, Les Howard and Roy Reid and still has a close advisory association with Graham, Les and Roy. In 2001 Terry was asked to take over the Energy Committee following the sudden death of chairman, Pat Ward. In recognising the specialist nature of the electricity industry he very quickly expanded the committee to include five retired electrical engineers and this was particularly beneficial to Grey Power during discussions with the Minister of Energy, Government officials, Opposition spokespersons and industry members. During his 10 years as chairman, the Energy Committee members recorded many achievements. The low fixed user charge came about through Grey Power advocating for domestic consumers. In 2003 Grey Power was directly involved in the setting up of the electricity invoices. The 2006 Government Policy Statement (GPS) on electricity governance was amended to recognise this requirement. Unfortunately many Electricity Industry members used delaying tactics to avoid this and with a change of Government the issue is still unresolved. Grey Power had representation on four separate advisory groups to the Electricity Commission. A six-year relationship with the RSA and Age Concern whereby they joined Grey Power when appropriate in joint submissions on electricity issues appeared before Parliamentary Select Committees, and in meetings with the Minister of Terry King Energy which were very successful. In September 2008, following the resignation of Ann Reading, Terry was appointed chair of the Lifestyle Quarterly publication. The contract arrangement with the Auckland Publisher of the LSQ had Grey Power covering any shortfall when advertising revenue failed to meet the full cost of production. At the time with the NZ economy in recession Grey Power Federation paid a net production loss of $13,000 for the year ended December 2008. Losses escalated during 2009 and with new committee members Graham Adams and Roger Hennebry and board approval, Terry and the team, with support from a legal firm, negotiated out of the existing contract. Hamilton-based Waikato Business Publications Ltd became the publisher of the newly named Grey Power Magazine and from the outset not only contractually met the full cost of production, but also contributed income to the Federation based on a profit sharing deal initiated by Roger Hennebry. During 2010/2011 Terry was a member of a Federation Board electricity negotiating team responsible for confidential discussions with Bosco Connect Ltd and also Tiny Mighty River, seeking to set up a Grey Power Electricity deal. Although this venture was unsuccessful he later joined with Energy Committee chair Allen Davies, Bill Rayner and Mac Welch in negotiations with Pulse Energy, and the result was Grey Power Electricity. With Allen Davies and Mac Welch Terry represents the Federation board on the Grey Power Electricity Committee, which includes three Pulse Energy senior management, plus CEO Gary Holden who chairs the committee. In 2006 board member and former bank manager, Graham Adams successfully negotiated the Kiwibank Grey Power Partnership Agreement. Since 2008 Terry has been a member of the Kiwibank Investment Fund and during the past seven years has maintained regular contact with the market manager – deposits particularly in terms of promoting the scheme. He has always supported the need to broaden the revenue base as opposed to increasing capitation fees. During his time on the board and in addition to the above, Terry has served on and at times chaired some of the following committees. * Office Administration and Social Services * Staff committee * Membership * Remits and Rules * Publicity committee * Law, Order & Justice * Finance and Investment * Advocacy * Board Executive committee As National president Terry led the Grey Power team on Parliamentary visits. A Justice of the Peace for 39 years, under the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2001, Terry was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for Services to the Community. The nomination was moved by former president Les Howard, seconded by Graham Adams and carried with acclamation. national Greypower mAGAZINE » june 2016 25 Heat pumps make for healthy living More than 50 percent of Kiwis have noticed health improvements since installing their heat pumps A recent survey into New Zealanders’ heat pump habits, by consumer satisfaction company, Canstar Blue has revealed that more than 60 percent of Aucklanders have noticed improvements in their health since installing a heat pump. Those under the age of 30 are the most likely age group to have noticed they are healthier (59%) compared with those aged 70 plus (47%). Do heat pumps help? Forty three percent of New Zealanders say that having a heat pump has reduced their power bills, especially those who are 70 years and over (58%), says Canstar New Zealand generalmManager, Jose George. “Men (49%) are also more likely than women (35%) to say that a heat pump has lent a helping hand with their power expenses.” Close to three quarters of Kiwis (74%) now believe that a heat pump is a must have in any house that they live in and a third have more than one heat pump in their home. These shoes or the lights? Kiwis under the age of 30 are feeling the pinch when it comes to paying their electricity bill; 38 percent of the younger generation are having to reduce their spending on other items so they can pay their power bills, says Jose George. “So if you’re still struggling with your winter power bills, check out Canstar Blue’s latest electricity provider’s survey to make sure you’re getting the best deal. “From switching power companies, insulating your home, going solar or installing double glazing, there are a number of ways you can reduce your power bills; strategic use of heat pumps are just one tool in your bill-fighting toolbox.” Women (33%) are significantly more likely than men (26%) to have had to cut down on other purchases so they can ensure they have enough money to pay power bills. Aucklanders and those in Waikato are the most likely to sacrifice spending on other items (31%) whereas those in Bay of Plenty aren’t having the same troubles (21%). A large portion of Kiwis (42%) are anxious about opening their power bills, especially in the winter months. Cantabrians are the most likely of all the regions to feel a pang of anxiety when their bill arrives (44%) while Aucklanders and Wellingtonians are the least stressed about their power rates (41%). Heat pump technology A third of New Zealanders have more than one heat pump in their homes, and close to half of Cantabrians can claim multipump status (48%), says Mr George. “And those in Bay of Plenty are being tech-savvy with their heat pumps, with a third remotely activating their heat pump so that their homes are warm when they get back.” Close to half (47%) of New Zealanders are using the timing functionality on their pumps and men (51%) seem to be more likely to set it to come on at a specific time than women (41%). The survey asked respondents to rate their heat pump across six variables: 1. Value for money 2. Reliability 3. Ease of use (of the controls and buttons) 4. Functionality (ability to choose and adjust functionality) 5. Quietness while operating 6. Overall satisfaction Toshiba has come out on top for overall customer satisfaction for 2015, achieving 5 stars in every category across the board. Consumers said that their number one driver of satisfaction with their heat pump was value for money (32%), followed by functionality (26%). Toshiba scored 5 stars for both of these drivers and was the only brand to score five stars for functionality. Toshiba has been providing top service and air conditioning solutions for consumers for the last 40 years, and believe that quality is what will always set them apart from their competitors, says George. “Toshiba has applied a Quality Assurance program to ensure maximum reliability and highest quality of all their airconditioning equipment.” Heat Pumps by region: Auckland: Aucklanders are least likely (equal with Wellingtonians) to feel stresses or significantly anxious when they open their power bill during the winter period (41%), most likely to say that their health has improved since installing a heat pump (62%), most likely to have had to reduce their spending on other items so they can pay their power bill (31%), and most likely to say that a heat pump is now a must have in any house they live in (78%). Waikato: Those in the Waikato are least likely to say that having a heat pump has reduced their power bills (31%), most likely to have had to reduce their spending on other things so they can pay their power bill (31%), most likely to have had home insulation installed prior to the heat pump being installed (85%) and most likely to say they use their heat pump for cooling in summer and heating in winter (81%).
