These include the multiplicity of taxes and charges of all description such as income tax, company tax, GST, withholding tax, petrol tax and so on. by PMH The second source is public investments. The problem here, of course, is that successive governments since 1984 have sought to divest incomeearning assets in pursuit of the neoliberal ideal of small Mgovernment. A nation’s living standards are determined by its national income and the number of people sharing that national income. Our Government predicts a 2.7 percent economic growth rate over the next five years. But if that growth rate was sustained our $230 billion GDP would double to around $460 billion by The critical variable is population growth. For example, with no immigration and a stable population of five million - allowing for natural increase - the predicted $25 billion cost of National Superannuation, at 5 percent of GDP, would remain practically unchanged as a percentage of national income with the net cost around 4.3 percent of GDP. The larger the gap between our GDP in 2050 and our population the greater the affordability of National Superannuation and the higher New Zealand’s living standards. The New Zealand Treasury has carried out extensive research in this context. Their researchers have reached a broadly similar conclusion. Treasury’s somewhat conservative projection based on the assumption that the current parameters of National Superannuation remain unchanged is that the gross cost will rise from 4.3 to 7.9 percent of GDP by 2060, then decline. Treasury’s analysis, however, takes no account of enhanced economic performance. Accordingly, the claim that it is highly unlikely that we will be able to afford National Superannuation in the future does not stack up. As the proponents of privatized superannuation keep telling us, face the facts and do the maths. Indeed. Words to live by.
