WELCOME
Making an Impact
One of the bigger lessons we learned soon after we launched the
Corridor Business Journal was that a strong private sector can’t
exist without a vibrant nonprofit sector. Fortunately, the Cedar
Rapids/Iowa City Corridor is blessed with both.
It is our hope that this Giving Guide will not only elevate the
awareness of many of these worthy nonprofit organizations, but
can also help connect them with the resources of the business
community and beyond.
We have had a tremendous response from the nonprofit
community for this Giving Guide. This publication features
profiles on 100 nonprofit organizations. Each profile provides a
snapshot of the key information on each organization.
We hope you’ll take special note of information regarding giving
and volunteering opportunities for each organization. Meeting
short-term and annual funding goals is always a monumental
challenge for these organizations, especially as requests for services
continue to increase. Our hope is every reader will be inspired by
at least one organization and motivated to help out to the best of
their ability. If we all do that, collectively we can make a significant
positive impact in people’s lives and in our region.
Please keep this publication for future reference. Your help
is needed and appreciated now and all year long. Your ongoing
generous donation of time, talent and treasure makes a big difference
in the lives of those who desperately need a helping hand.
Thank you to the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation,
NextEra Energy-Duane Arnold Energy Center, United Way of
East Central Iowa, the Alliant Energy Foundation and Capstone
Charity Resources for providing the foundational support to make
this publication happen. Quite simply, this publication wouldn’t
have been possible without their support.
And finally, a special thank you to the nonprofit community
and their boards of directors, employees and volunteers for
helping to make Iowa’s Creative Corridor such a special place to
live and work.
Sincerely,
Generosity builds community. This principle is at the center of our
work, and as the community foundation serving Linn County, we can
attest to the impact individuals have on the people who live and work
in the Corridor.
Since becoming a public foundation in 1992, we have awarded
$105 million in grants. This is made possible by gifts – large and small
– from many different donors which have helped strengthen every
part of our community.
It is encouraging to see the benefit that results when private
philanthropy and innovative nonprofits come together. Nonprofits
create and administer programs that address our greatest opportunities
and challenges. Charitable giving is essential if those nonprofits are to
achieve their missions.
Our hope is that this Giving Guide will inspire you. There are
many worthy causes represented here, and your support of them will
make life better for all of us. The Greater Cedar Rapids Community
Foundation is grateful for your generosity. We are proud to serve you,
to share our community knowledge, and to help you make a lasting
difference in your community.
At NextEra Energy Duane Arnold, we are all about power. We safely
produce enough power to meet 8 percent of Iowa’s energy needs, and
the 500-plus men and women who make Duane Arnold great also
play a powerful role in our local community.
Team members at Duane Arnold serve our community every single
day. Our employees volunteer at their children’s schools, help build
houses with Habitat for Humanity and donate tens of thousands of
dollars for local charities through our monthly fundraisers, annual
giving campaigns and golf tournament. Some of our team members
serve as volunteer firefighters, law enforcement officers and youth
sports coaches. Others bake cakes for at-risk kids, engage the minds
of young aspiring engineers and support animals in need. Through
dozens of charities and in hundreds of different ways, our team
members give back selflessly.
As a Fortune Magazine-recognized “Most Ethical” company, our
commitment to caring goes well beyond the Duane Arnold Energy
Center. The employees of our parent company, NextEra Energy,
support thousands of charities across the country. NextEra expects its
employees to care for the communities they serve. We pride ourselves
on being the best kind of neighbors by supporting those in need, being
trustworthy and always willing to lend a helping hand.
Together, we take pride in the difference we can make as individuals
and as a strong partner in the Creative Corridor. It is an honor to serve
this community by providing clean, reliable energy and through our
charitable giving.
Our community’s strength is coming together for
a cause. At United Way, our cause is to fight for the
education, financial stability and health of every
person in our community.
For more than 100 years, United Way of East
Central Iowa has served this community thanks
to your generosity and involvement. During that
time, we have realized incredible results; however,
there is still more work we need to do to improve
conditions for everyone.
Our nonprofit partners continue to stretch
their resources to provide valuable programs
and services that address critical issues. It will
take all of us working together to create positive
change and meet this need. By working with
partner agencies, community organizations,
government agencies, and you, we are confident
we can win this fight.
We know this Giving Guide will help you make
informed choices for your charitable giving. As
an organization that received recognition this
past year from the Better Business Bureau for
their Torch Award for Ethics, we at United Way
of East Central Iowa know how important this
information can be. That’s why we encourage
you to use this guide, contribute and join the
fight in making our community a better place
Executive Director
Alliant Energy
Foundation
Great things happen in our communities when
we use our Energy for Good.
Families at risk for homelessness improve their
living situations. People facing food insecurity
connect with resources to stock their shelves.
Volunteers help preserve and protect sensitive
natural areas. Students work with mentors and
find their passions. Nonprofits across Iowa extend
the reach and impact of their programs.
Alliant Energy and the Alliant Energy
Foundation have supported nonprofits’ efforts
in Iowa since the Foundation was created in
1998. Combined corporate giving, Alliant
Energy Foundation support and funds to match
employee giving in Iowa and Wisconsin topped
$6.5 million in 2016. To date, the Foundation
has contributed more than $50 million to
community organizations.
Through those investments, Energy for Good
was amplified. Food banks and housing efforts
received grants. Job seekers increased their skill
sets. School and community groups focusing
on STEM (science, technology, engineering and
math) education were able to connect with and
inspire more students. Nature conservancies
and programs augmented their resources and
programming.
Our philanthropic spirit extends beyond those
monetary gifts. Our volunteer Power Teams help
build Habitat for Humanity homes, staff food
banks, seed restored prairies and help wherever
need arises. There’s a simple but profound
reason we get involved. We live and work in the
communities we serve. We want to make them
better, and that job is far from done.
Compliance is of increasing importance to
prospective donors and grantmakers in the
nonprofit world. And not just for the charity,
but also for the Professional Fundraisers and
Fundraising Counsel that nonprofits work with.
At Capstone Charity Resources, our mission
is simple. We make Charitable Solicitation
Registration compliance services available to all
nonprofits at an affordable price and with the
quality you expect.
Whether you are a small or startup charity or
a large international nonprofit soliciting in the
United States, Charitable Solicitation Registration
likely applies to you.
Sometimes, it’s the little things that trip you up.
Did you know that Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin
and North Dakota are among the 40 states that
require nonprofit charitable registration prior to
asking for donations? With these states right next
door, your organization could be at risk. Many
charities have donors in the Sunbelt states, as
well, most of which require registration.
When a nonprofit struggles with having enough
resources to support the mission, Charitable
Solicitation Registration gets put on the back
burner due to the complexity of the process. In
some cases, registration is even allowed to lapse.
When that happens, executive staff and board
member accountability comes into play.
Flying under the radar when it comes to
compliance is no longer a reasonable strategy.
That’s why we started this business, with a
simple mission: affordable, accessible and quality
registration services.
GCRCF Increases
Number of Grants
Thank you for your support of nonprofit organizations
The Greater Cedar Rapids Community
Foundation leadership team includes
(front, left to right) Les Garner,
president and CEO; Karla Twedt-
Ball, senior vice president, programs
and community investment; (back,
left to right) Jean Brenneman, chief
financial officer; Michelle Beisker,
vice president of development; and
Corinne Ramler, director of marketing
and communications.
The Greater Cedar Rapids Community
Foundation is in a unique
position to direct private philanthropy
to community needs. The
nonprofit organization has a threepronged
mission: connect donors with funds
that embody their values, strengthen and support
nonprofits with funding and professional
development opportunities and serve as a convener
of resources to the community.
In 2016, gifts received were $12.5 million
with assets growth of $9 million. Paired with
an increase in donor activity, the Community
Foundation distributed $10 million across
1,318 grants, which is a 23.7 percent increase
from 2015. Additionally, 57 new funds were
created across designated, donor-advised,
agency, scholarship, specialty interest and
community endowment options.
Approximately 440 nonprofit recipients
used these funds to innovate their programming
and fortify their operations. More than
30 percent of grants were awarded to the human
service sector, followed by education (20
percent) and arts and culture (17 percent). The
Community Foundation currently manages
more than 900 charitable funds that represent
nearly $150 million in assets.
FLOOD ASSISTANCE
As it had in 2008, the Greater Cedar Rapids
Community Foundation was at the ready to
help Cedar Rapids recover from the 2016 flood.
More than $400,000 was awarded across three
funds for affected households, nonprofits and
businesses. The Jobs and Small Business Recovery
fund was established in partnership
with the city of Cedar Rapids and the Metro
Economic Alliance. The city provided an initial
seed of $75,000 and the Community Foundation
raised an additional $225,000, which was
distributed to more than 90 local businesses.
“While the need for flood support was
thankfully much lower than in 2008, many
businesses nonetheless suffered from the hidden
costs of evacuating, lost revenue and damaged
inventory. We are so grateful to the individuals
and corporate leaders who donated
to flood recovery – those funds speak volumes
about how much our community cares about
the welfare of those affected,” said Les Garner,
Community Foundation president and CEO.
AID FOR ALL
The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation
distributes grants to a wide range of
organizations that provide a public benefit, including
human service, art, education, health
and environment. A competitive application
process ensures funds are directed to areas with
demonstrated need. Last year, the foundation
funded $1.6 million of $2.7 million requested
grants. These monies were conferred to a diverse
pool of agencies, such as the Alzheimer’s
Association, YMCA, Girls on the Run, Kids First
Law Center, and the Willis Dady Emergency
Center. These included programs such as:
n Wheelchair Ramp Accessibility Program
(WRAP), which provides low-cost wheelchair
ramp design, installation and maintenance
to Linn County residents. Ramps can
cost several hundred dollars per linear foot,
anywhere from $500 to $1,500 on average.
This initial investment can be a barrier to
families who have mobility issues, particularly
if these complications arise from a
sudden change in physical health. Coordinated
by St. Luke’s Hospital, the volunteer
10 CBJ Giving Guide 2017

program installed nearly 50 ramps and removed and recycled 18
ramps that were no longer needed in 2016.
n Pets for Vets covers all adoption fees with the Cedar Valley Human
Society (CVHS) for veterans rescuing a pet. According to
the National Center for PTSD, dogs can lower stress and improve
mood. While shelter pets are not the same as a trained therapy
animal, adding a dog to a military family still has many positive
benefits. The Pets for Vets program also covers veterinarian
services, initial supplies and enrollment in an obedience class.
In addition to thanking vets for their service, the grant supports
CVHS’s mission to place more animals in quality homes.
n Eastern Iowa Dental Center is the first low-income dental clinic
of its kind in Linn County. While dental care is an essential
part of total health care, individuals on tight budgets are often
unable to see a dentist. The clinic offers preventive care, gum disease
treatment and tooth repairs to Medicare-qualified patients
as well as those without insurance. Since opening its doors in
May, two dentists and four hygienists treat more than 125 patients
each week.
With ongoing financial support, nonprofits can uphold and
expand their services. It also empowers agencies to develop and
launch new programs so they can adapt to evolving community
needs.
A PARTNER FOR ENTREPRENEURS
Established in 2015, the MICRO program provides short-term
loans for Cedar Rapids-based businesses. The Community Foundation
and the city of Cedar Rapids developed this lending option
after being approached with the idea by donors Barry and Gilda
Boyer. Applicants can receive loans up to $10,000 with a payback
period of three years at 4 percent interest.
Recipients must create a business plan, which can be prepared
with the assistance of the Cedar Rapids Public Library, Kirkwood
Small Business Development Center or SCORE of East Central
Iowa. The loan is approved through the East Central Iowa Council
of Governments (ECICOG), which also provides mentors to help
borrowers implement their business plan.
The program has issued seven loans at a total of $70,000 to
companies such as The Pig and Porter restaurant, Hemann Construction,
My Clean Dog and Swine Tech. Due to its popularity, city
and private investments funds were added this past year to continue
growing the program.
“It is gratifying to be part of an expanding ecosystem that supports
entrepreneurs to realize their business goals,” Mr. Garner said.
BE A VISIONARY
The MICRO program exemplifies the power of one individual’s
idea. The Community Foundation routinely partners with donors
who want to turn a cherished concept into a reality.
“An entrepreneurial mindset isn’t limited to business – we believe
you can be a philanthropy entrepreneur. Just like creating a
startup, you can take a visionary idea and use your energy to start
or expand community funds. Our donors often see a new way to
leverage contributions and become a catalyst for innovation,” Mr.
Garner explained.
Even a modest fund can make a lasting difference. Rich and
Marion Patterson wanted a way to give back to the community that
Bernadette Gladish, program assistant at the Greater Cedar Rapids Community
Foundation, prepares grant awards to be mailed to nonprofits. So far in 2017,
more than $5 million has been distributed to 368 nonprofit organizations.
has been their home for more than 40 years. Mr. Patterson was the executive director of
Indian Creek Nature Center from 1978-2014 and instrumental in restoring native prairie
and wetlands, developing trails and fundraising for the Amazing Space building. The
couple started the Patterson Family Endowed Fund with $10,000 and will contribute
to it until they pass, at which time half of their estate will be bestowed as a parting gift.
The Community Foundation specializes in investing endowments, which ensures
gifts are grown to maximize their financial impact. The organization handles a wide
variety of gifts, including cash, real estate, securities, retirement assets and annuities.
The Community Foundation manages more than 150 funds that support nonprofits so
donors can support an organization that matches their personal values and passions.
Both individual and corporate donors can also contribute general gifts to the Community
Endowment Fund, which supports the most pressing community issues and
opportunities. •
Alliant Energy Foundation
Lights Up Communities
When you
think of a
utility, it’s
considered a
basic need.
Assisting
families aligns
well with our
industry.
– Julie Bauer, Executive Director
Alliant Energy Foundation
With a service territory of 54,369 square
miles, the Alliant Energy Foundation
is electrifying communities across the
region with charitable giving. Its mission
is to improve the quality of life
for residents through targeted grants. In 2016, more than
$656,400 was awarded across 266 area organizations.
“We want to do more than just write a check,” said Julie
Bauer, executive director. “Our foundation goes the extra
mile to help facilitate conversations and connections
that drive lasting change in our communities.”
NEED-BASED GRANTS
The Foundation, which is a separate legal entity from Alliant
Energy’s utility business, has two cycles for grant applications
each year. Qualifying organizations can be a municipal
entity, nonprofit organization or accredited school.
Applicants must outline goals for the proposed initiative,
describe how it will fulfill a community need, quantify
budget considerations and detail metrics for success.
The Foundation receives nearly 500 grant requests annually
and fulfills more than half of them. All applications
are reviewed by an executive team, including Ms.
Bauer, Leah Rodenberg, senior program manager, and
Adam Erdmann, program manager. They are then routed
to employees within the area where the project will benefit.
This additional input from regional directors, local
operations managers and environmental and economic
development staff creates robust conversations about
how to best support public initiatives.
“Our employees are the eyes and ears in their communities.
We want to ensure we’re not doubling existing
efforts or overlooking underserved needs,” Ms. Bauer explained.
“It’s also essential that our grant review process
has multiple perspectives and voices chiming in.”
Most grants are less than $2,500 and are often awarded
in smaller disbursements, between $1,000–1,500. Alliant
Energy has a presence in many small towns and recognizes
that these rural areas often have fewer resources
or funding channels than larger cities.
“We want to broadly support communities of all sizes
without diluting our giving efforts,” Ms. Bauer stressed.
“It’s amazing to see how nonprofits can take any size
amount and maximize those funds.”
The Foundation also partners with other donors to
extend the reach of its dollars. For example, it funnels
$550,000 each year to United Way and another $600,000
directly from its employees. Alliant Energy will also join
forces with other corporate funders on large-scale projects
impacting the community.
FOCUSED SUPPORT
There are three categories of support under the Community
Grants Program: helping families, education and the
environment. By targeting specific needs, Alliant Energy’s
giving efforts have a more effective and sustainable impact.
“When you think of a utility, it’s considered a basic
need. Assisting families aligns well with our industry,”
Ms. Bauer said. “We support programs that provide parents
and children with vital necessities such as food, shelter
and safety.”
Because STEM (science, technology, engineering and
math) education is critical to the ongoing stability of
the utility industry, the Foundation sponsors programs
that promote public library offerings, financial literacy
and workforce development. These include Jane Boyd’s
PATHS Program, Junior Achievement’s classroom financial
literacy curriculum and the Cedar Rapids Public Library’s
summer reading program.
More than 10 percent of Alliant Energy’s power production
is derived from renewable sources such as solar
and wind. Funding requests that advance conservation
and other environmental protections also receive priority.
These can range from park updates and trail improvements
to developing habitats for native wildlife and plants.
The Foundation also offers the Hometown Safety
Grant. Life-saving equipment for police, fire and EMS departments
can be a costly endeavor so the Foundation
will step in to help cities meet their fundraising goals.
Grants can be submitted for devices from defibrillators in
public buildings and thermal imaging cameras to larger
purchases such as a fire truck or mass notification system.
“Safety is a priority for utilities and one of our core
values. Safety-related projects benefit a broad spectrum of
people, so we provide matching donations to help public
entities serve and protect our communities,” Ms. Bauer
explained.
Between these areas of giving, Alliant Energy is able
to support diverse nonprofits. Recent grant recipients include
Waypoint Services, Jane Boyd Community House,
Cedar Rapids School Foundation, American Red Cross,
Boys and Girls Club and the HD Youth Center.
A HELPING HAND
The Foundation also coordinates numerous events that engage
Alliant Energy’s employee base. In 2016, employees
and retirees generously donated 80,010 volunteer hours.
Employees regularly lend a hand to programs such as
HACAP, Junior Achievement and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The Foundation has been a longtime supporter of
Habitat for Humanity and will be participating in their
second Panel Build project this fall. Habitat will bring all
of the building materials to an Alliant Energy office site
and 100 employees will construct the shell of a house. It
will then be moved to its final destination, providing a
unique opportunity to involve employees without having
to travel off-site.
“Volunteering is part of our DNA,” Ms. Bauer said.
“We love to get out there as a company and help in any
small way.” •
lmost half of the population resides in
of the 40 states that require registration
ARE YOU COMPLIANT?
stration is required in 40 states • Online donation requests affect 14 states
Each state’s submission can take hours to prepare
Ask us how affordable, guaranteed registration
and helpful resources keep your nonprofit in compliance:
pat@capstonecharityresources.org
Fast Facts About
Charity Registration
g nonprofit registration—it’s what we do.
In 40 states, nonprofit organizations are required to
register with the state prior to asking for donations
there. Although Iowa doesn’t currently require
registration, several border states do, including Illinois,
Minnesota and Wisconsin, which is likely
to impact even small startup nonprofits in the Corridor.
capstonecharityresources.org • 319.730.7605 Charity registration is important. Your organization
could face legal and financial consequences if it or the
fundraising professional you hire is not registered. To
help you understand more about the complexities of
charity registration, we’ve collected a Q&A of fast facts
about what we do.
Our experienced staff focuses
entirely on nonprofit registration.
We can answer your questions,
determine states you need to register
in, and file registrations for your
organization, regardless of its size.
WHERE DO WE NEED TO REGISTER?
The best way to determine where your organization must
register is to assess where your contributions have come
from over a period of three to five
years. Chances are, if you are receiving
monies on a regular basis, and
you have continued to make the
“ask” either via a newsletter, email,
website or social media, you should
register in those states first.
Next, take a look at your fundraising
strategy. Where do you plan
to broaden your outreach? Do others
fundraise on your behalf, and if
so, where are they located? Will you
use any online fundraising? Are you leveraging the expertise
of a professional fundraiser? Your answers will help
identify where you need to register.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Each state determines the fees charged for filings. Some
states require filings in addition to – and in advance of
– the nonprofit registration filing. Registered agents, foreign
corporation filings, business license filings and sales
tax exemptions are all examples of supplemental filings
required in some states. These additional filings may have
fees associated with them in addition to the state charitable
solicitation filing fee. Another variable is the sliding
scale fee structure used by some states.
If you are a small nonprofit needing to register in five
states or less, you should plan to budget around $2,500.
While it will vary depending on the specific state fees, this
typically includes the state filing fee as well as the Capstone
processing fee. Annual renewal fees require approximately
the same investment.
At the other end of the spectrum, should you need to
register in all states that require it, we suggest you plan
to invest $8,000-$11,000 depending on supplemental
filings needed and fees that are based on your success
in fundraising.
Keep in mind that late renewals can incur penalties.
WHEN DO WE BEGIN THE
REGISTRATION PROCESS?
It is very important that you register as soon as possible.
The number of states that require retroactive filings is
growing. Some states, such as Illinois, will require back
filing fees and late fees covering the past three years. Each
state determines how they will treat previous fundraising.
One thing we know: It is not cheaper to wait when
it comes to compliance. Fees and penalties can add up.
Plus, donors may become aware that your nonprofit is
not compliant.
CAN WE REGISTER OUR
NONPROFIT OURSELVES?
Absolutely! We offer a self-service option on our website.
Unfortunately, that places the burden on you and your
staff to:
n Understand the ongoing changes in state regulations
n Manage filing due dates, extension requirements
and changes in fees, forms and supporting
documentation
n Know where you need to register
The process has become more complicated, and it is
unlikely to become easier anytime soon.
ARE THERE ANY EXEMPTIONS?
Each state determines if it will offer exemptions and to
what types of organizations. For example, in health care,
the nonprofit hospital may be exempt, but the foundation
is not – or vice-versa. In some states, related organizations
(e.g. nonprofit nursing home, nonprofit clinics,
hospital auxiliaries, etc.) are exempt. In the case of religious
organizations, many states will exempt any related
organization as long as they are not required to file an IRS
Form 990. The dollar value of contributions can impact
an exemption as can the use of professional fundraisers.
Many factors need to be considered, and being exempt
does not eliminate your need to file. Some states require
annual exemption filings.
HOW DOES ONLINE FUNDRAISING
IMPACT REGISTRATION?
Most nonprofit organizations are leveraging their websites
and social media presences to raise funds. This may
be considered a compliance issue. However, state regulations
change frequently, and there is not a common set of
interpretations relative to online fundraising and registration
requirements.
Our experienced staff focuses entirely on nonprofit
registration. We can answer your questions, determine
states you need to register in, and file registrations for
your organization, regardless of its size. Learn more at
NextEra Energy Duane
Arnold Keeps the Energy High
There are four
main categories
we emphasize
companywide:
Human
services, the
environment,
education and
community
development.
– Dean Curtland, site director of
NextEra Energy Duane Arnold
Located nine miles northwest of Cedar Rapids
in Palo, NextEra Energy Duane Arnold is the
state’s only nuclear power facility and a main
supplier of electricity in Eastern Iowa. But the
facility’s 500-plus employees do more than just
produce enough energy to meet 8 percent of Iowa’s total
electricity needs. They are also committed to the communities
they serve, and have a long history of giving that
dates back to when the Duane Arnold Energy Center first
began operations in 1974.
“There are four main categories we emphasize company-wide
across North America when it comes to community
involvement and philanthropy. They are human
services, the environment, education and community
development,” explained Dean Curtland, site director of
NextEra Energy Duane Arnold.
Locally, Mr. Curtland said, first and foremost, Duane
Arnold team members want to make sure “we are benefiting
our neighbors.” They do this by forming partnerships
with community organizations, which regularly present
Duane Arnold employees with opportunities to get involved.
Duane Arnold was recognized by the industry for its
unique partnership with a local high school. I&C Department
Head Kevin Steimer and his son, Collin, were on
hand to accept the prestigious Top Industry Practice (TIP)
award from the Nuclear Energy Institute.
“I am so proud of this team’s innovative approach,”
Mr. Curtland said. “This industry-level award recognizes
our team’s ability to think outside the box and help develop
future leaders in our community.”
Kevin challenged his son and his classmates in the Jefferson
High School computer integrated manufacturing
class to design a better relay block to be used on GE HGA
relays. The I&C shop had a relay block that worked great
on one style of relays, but required a bit of manipulation
to fit it onto the GE HGA relay. The end result benefits
both the station and the students who received real-life
on–the-job experience.
Besides events and projects, employees can participate
in an annual giving program, contributing dollars
through payroll deduction and designating where they
want the money donated. This giving option has been
popular with the Duane Arnold staff, which averages
more than $100,000 in total donations each year. Likewise,
employees can also participate in monthly lunches
that help raise money for local charities, and in the
“Dollars for Doers” program, which makes donations to
a charity of their choice once they log a certain number
of volunteer hours with that particular organization.
Promoting clean energy and supporting environmental
causes is another important part of the company’s
philanthropic mission, which is why they played a key
role in the capital campaign to build the Wickiup Hill
Learning Center, which is operated by the Linn County
Conservation Board. They are currently involved in helping
develop a new wetlands area, which will be adjacent
to the Learning Center.
Duane Arnold also provided support for the Palo Fire
Department, as they built and moved into their new facility,
and provides ongoing training support for local law
enforcement agencies including the Iowa National Guard.
“I’m thrilled that the men and women of the Duane
Arnold Energy Center give so much back to the community,
and the difference they make is even more special
since most of the organizations we work with are in Linn
and Benton counties,” said Mr. Curtland, who adds that
they have also been presenting sponsors for a number of
statewide events in the past.
“Our employees are giving and engaged; and whenever
we have asked them to get involved with charity
and community projects, there has always been a good
response. So our employees are eager for more opportunities
in the future.” •
HEALTH
ABBE MENTAL HEALTH CENTER
One in four individuals will experience an episode of mental illness at some point in our
lives. Virtually everyone in our community is impacted by a mental health need either
personally, or as a family member, friend, neighbor, etc. Advances in the treatment of
behavioral health disorders have been dramatic in the past 10 years helping countless
individuals to recover and live full and meaningful lives. During that same decade however
funding for serving individuals + their families has decreased. Early treatment and
community based services are effective in helping individuals recover.
MISSION & SERVICES
Reaching out to improve lives in our communities through advocacy, support and the integration
of mental health and wellness services. Our array of services are designed to encompass
emotional, physical and social well-being through our integrated health approach. Our services
include Integrated Health Home, Adult Outpatient Services (Psychiatric Evaluations, Medication
Management, and Individual / Family Therapy), Child & Adolescent Services, Community-Based
Services, In-home Mental Health Nursing, drop-in Recovery Centers and Homeless Outreach.
HOW TO HELP
Volunteering – Abbe Center has volunteer opportunities in our Wellness Recovery Center and social
group times. Volunteers have shared their hobbies or expertise with individuals attending social club
or have assisted in planning and organizing special Holiday events.
Giving opportunities – Contributions go to great use in helping individuals get the treatment services
they need, or towards assisting individuals served in our Homeless Outreach program. A donation
option is on our website. Your support is always appreciated!
United Way of East Central Iowa
Adapts to Changes in Giving
United Way
of East Central Iowa
We’ve
developed
expertise in
identifying
community
needs.
- Shannon Hanson, vice
president for marketing and
communications,
United Way of East Central Iowa
Like any organization for-profit or nonprofit,
the United Way of East Central Iowa is constantly
adjusting to stay relevant to the community
it serves. UWECI may claim some
advantages in this effort, as its goals and programs
are built upon minutely detailed knowledge of
that community.
“The philanthropic landscape has changed, so we’ve
got to change accordingly,” said Tim Stiles, UWECI president
and CEO.
Mr. Stiles noted the millennial generation engages differently
with nonprofits than their baby boomer parents.
“More direct, more hands-on,” he said.
That strategy plays to UWECI’s strengths in engaging
its community through other organizations and individual
volunteers. The Cedar Rapids-based nonprofit
specializes in identifying critical needs in its service area
of Linn, Benton, Cedar, Iowa and Jones counties, then
working with partner agencies to address them.
“We’ve developed expertise in identifying community
needs,” said Shannon Hanson, vice president for marketing
and communications. “We have an entire department
dedicated to understanding what needs there are in the
community, so we can go and fund partners that help fill
those needs, those gaps we see, as well as bring together
organizations that might be able to work together on a
community problem that isn’t currently being addressed.”
That’s a change from what Ms. Hanson calls “old
United Way,” functioning largely to distribute donations
to local organizations. The new United Way looks
to find solutions to help make the community better
for everyone.
Operating on an $11.1 million budget for the fiscal
year ending July 1, UWECI has ambitious goals for the
next three years:
n Increase children developmentally and academically
on track by fourth grade by 30 percent
n Increase financially stable households by 15 percent
n Improve social connectedness and mental health of
low-income adults by 10 percent
UWECI funds 22 partner agencies this year, but works
with more than 80 to develop and sustain programs furthering
those goals.
“We deal with a lot of root causes,” Mr. Stiles said.
“For instance, you have a drop-out rate. Getting to the
root cause of that issue would be, when the child is born,
exposing a child to books and reading beginning at birth
so that when they enter school they’re able to read and
have a vocabulary of a five-year-old.”
One UWECI response is RED Ahead, for Read Every
Day to get Ahead. Partnering with the Hawkeye Area
Community Action Program (HACAP), UWECI established
RED Ahead centers in the Women Infants and
Children clinics in Marion and Cedar Rapids.
“When the parent comes in for their visit to get WIC
vouchers, the kids walk out with a book and the parents
get some instruction in how to utilize the book to help
their child develop literacy skills,” Mr. Stiles said.
RED Ahead served 2,104 parents in fiscal 2016, with
502 children showing improved literacy. Such measurements
are a critical part of UWECI’s strategy.
“It’s not enough to say, ‘This program served 50 people
last year, now we’re serving 60 people,’” Mr. Stiles
said. “How is that making a difference? It’s the community-wide
measurements and data and demographics that
we collect to ensure we are moving toward the community
goals.”
Such data-gathering led to the creation of the Women’s
Leadership Initiative a decade ago.
“That initiative has grown from 30 women who started
meeting in someone’s living room, wanting to talk about
what it is we could do for women in our community, to
more than 400 people coming together for a cause,” Ms.
Hanson said. “For us, moving forward, moving even farther
into those cause-related strategies to help our community
will be even more important.”
United Way encourages such community engagement
by making it easier to volunteer – a natural fit for those
hands-on millennials (and others), whatever their interest.
“We are kind of the clearinghouse for volunteering”
through Volunteer Now, Ms. Hanson said. The tool can
be accessed through www.uweci.org.
“We have hundreds of organizations that put in volunteer
opportunities and if you don’t know what you want
to do, there’s even a little quiz you can take,” she said.
“For instance, if you’re new to volunteering, you can go
in there and say, ‘I really like kids, I really like to be outside,’
and it will give you options.”
Effective programs and engaged citizens are a demonstration
of United Way’s place in the community, Mr.
Stiles said.
“We view United Way as an investment in the community,”
he said. “That’s what your return on investment is:
how is your community getting better?” •
Corridor experts offer tips for keeping volunteers happy and engaged
By Chase Castle
news@corridorbusiness.com
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the nonprofit world, but
for many leaders in the Corridor, retaining a healthy volunteer
workforce poses an ongoing challenge.
Lia Pontarelli is the director of development and communications
for Salvation Army of Cedar Rapids, which
serves Linn County and the Anamosa area with meal programs,
youth activities and financial assistance for rent
and utilities, among other services.
She said the most successful programming the group
offers doesn’t just provide a service. Rather, outreach
initiatives and programs such as women’s ministries encourage
volunteers and staff to learn as much as they can
about the clients they serve. Developing those relationships,
she said, allows program organizers to adapt their
offerings to each client’s situation, and ultimately reduce
charitable recidivism.
“[We’re working] with clients and not just giving them
Band-Aids and sending them on their way, but actually
working with them and finding out about the situation
that they are in, and how to get them out of that situation,”
Ms. Pontarelli said.
The Salvation Army meal program served 37,000 meals
last year, while an estimated 7,000 additional individuals
received food boxes or financial assistance.
Let Me Run inspires boys through the power of running to be
courageous enough to be themselves, build healthy relationships,
and live active lifestyles. Our comprehensive curriculum breaks
through society’s limiting and harmful “boys will be boys” mentality by
encouraging boys to develop their emotional and social health — in
addition to physical health — and live into their full unique potential.
HOW TO HELP
• Make a lasting impact in boys’ lives as a coach. Email hailees@
letmerun.org for details.
• Support our boys with a donation at bit.ly/LMR-EIC. Donations
provide curriculum lesson supplies, as well as scholarships for boys
who would otherwise be unable to join a team and experience this
life-changing program.
METH-WICK COMMUNITY
MISSION & SERVICES
Our mission is to provide a secure and caring living environment to those we serve,
allowing them to maintain their dignity and to enrich the quality of their lives as they
age. Meth-Wick offers eight areas of living and a range of lifestyle choices – from
independent living to varying degrees of health services, transportation services, bus
trips, and cultural/recreational programs.
HOW TO HELP
Meth-Wick has three endowment funds (Wick Endowment, Sears-Methodist Assistance
and the Powell Endowment)… Contributions add to the amount of principal. A
percentage of income is used for free/discounted care and is used for residents who
have exhausted their funds through no fault of their own. Funds grow and become
available for use, with investment and tax-saving opportunities for donors.
Barthinius L. Wick, a local attorney, saw a need in the community and designated a
portion of his estate to be used for the creation of a retirement home and appointed
five trustees to carry out his dream. The Manor opened in 1961. Meth-Wick
Childhood is
supposed to be a
happy time.
But some kids struggle with
emotional and behavioral
problems that can overwhelm
them—and their families.
When children or adolescents
become a danger to
themselves or to others,
3 East, our Inpatient
Adolescent Program,
provides a secure, safe
and supportive treatment
environment. 3 East offers
family-centered programs
for children (ages 6-12) and
adolescents (ages 13-18)
experiencing suicidal thoughts
or behavior, substance abuse,
mood disorders, psychosis,
or problems related to stress,
trauma or abuse. We help
patients and families manage
behavior and develop new
coping skills, with the goal
of helping children return to
home and school.
Noah’s Story
Nobody wanted me. I was taken away from my mom ‘cause she
didn’t look out for me. It seemed like people were always hurting
me. Sometimes it made me so MAD, I’d hurt myself. The foster
homes they sent me to didn’t know how to help me with my anger.
Then they sent me to St. Luke’s. I’d still get mad, but when I tried
to hurt myself, the staff didn’t yell. They hugged me, held me and
told me I was a good person. No one ever told me that before. I
started to think, yeah, maybe I am a good kid after all. Now I live
with my grandma. And you know what? For the first time in my life,
somebody wants me.
CLUBFOOT SOLUTIONS
MISSION & SERVICES
Children born with clubfoot suffer tremendous physical and emotional pain. The birth defect twists and
turns children’s feet into unnatural positions that make walking close to impossible. Shame, fear, isolation
– these are the reality for clubfoot children and their families because the misunderstanding and fear of
the birth defect is pervasive. Thanks to the late Dr. Ignacio Ponseti clubfoot children don’t have to suffer
a life of pain and disability. More than sixty years ago Dr. Ignacio Ponseti at the University of Iowa Health
Care pioneered the life changing, noninvasive method that corrects clubfoot and gives clubfoot children
the freedom to run, walk and live a normal, pain-free life! The Ponseti Method utilizes a series of gentle
manipulations, castings and bracing to correct clubfoot. It has been a game changer for the world’s most
prevalent orthopedic birth defect that impacts 200,000 children each year. Clubfoot Solutions, provides the
Iowa Brace an effective, comfortable and durable clubfoot brace to children in the developing world.
HOW TO HELP
Clubfoot Solutions goal is to make the Iowa Brace available to all children regardless of their ability to
we distributed 30,000 Iowa Braces to children in need. Our goal is to double that number in 2017. We are
proud the same team that brought the world the Ponseti Method, the University of Iowa Health Care, has
“Without Four Oaks we wouldn’t have been able to help our son Ahndre, but
with their help everything came together and our family keeps progressing.”
- Perry
Perry and Kathy aren’t alone in their story as each year Four Oaks helps
thousands of struggling families and children. Coming to Four Oaks
through our comprehensive TotalChild approach, Four Oaks helped this
family identify their goals and the hurdles to overcome on their journey to
success.
One unique factor about the TotalChild approach is that we work with
families until the child is 18-years-old. It allows Four Oaks to be a
consistent force in the youth and the family’s life as obstacles come. It also
allows the ability to ensure the child becomes a successful adult.
Since TotalChild began five years ago, we have enrolled more than 1,100
children with overwhelmingly positive results.
GOODWILL OF THE HEARTLAND
MISSION & SERVICES
The mission of Goodwill of the Heartland is to advance the social and economic
well-being of people who experience barriers to independence. When you
donate and when you shop our stores, you create jobs and other opportunities
that may be unemployed or underemployed and lacking job skills and work
hope to families and individuals in need by providing basic needs such as food, clothing,
and household items. Our food pantry is the largest in Linn County feeding over 2,000
people per month. The Mission also provides youth programs (in partnership with Boys
& Girls Club of Cedar Rapids and HACAP Head Start) that encourage self-esteem,
independence, and community service. We aim to foster self-sufficiency and achieve
long term success through respect, compassion, and community support. In total, Olivet
Neighborhood Mission performed over 70,121 acts of giving in 2016 and served over
23,000 people in the Cedar Rapids metro area.
HOW TO HELP
For as little as $10, you can make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged families living in
your local area. Ten dollars would provide 3 families with an emergency food box that would
last them up to 2-3 days. A dollar donated and spent by our organization can go 4 times as
far as a dollar spent at retail costs. As a non-profit organization that offers all services and
programs free to those in need, we depend on your help. With that help, we can continue to
provide resources to our community. Thank you!
Connect with us
story ideas press releases guest columns
If you have a story idea that goes
beyond a basic press release or feature
for our “Movers & Shakers” section,
or would like to see your company
profiled, please forward us your ideas.
Keep in mind that the Corridor Business
Journal receives many ideas for stories
and coverage of local businesses and
industries. If your story idea or profile is
beneficial to our readers, we’ll contact
you to follow up.
TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE STORY PITCHES
• Ask yourself, “What can my story teach or
reveal to readers?” What makes your story
timely, notable or interesting regarding
business in the Corridor? How does it tie into
current issues or themes? Our best stories
highlight businesses in the Corridor while also
illustrating broader business themes at work.
• Provide any supporting documentation,
background information, images or possible
contacts that will help our staff research your
story pitch.
• Note that we generally do not run “milestone”
stories unless they are regarding a major
Corridor company or a significant anniversary
(25, 50, 100, etc.).
Send to: adam@corridorbusiness.com
Subject: STORY IDEA
Answer these essential questions:
Who? What? When? Where? Why?
How? Include a contact, email, mailing
address and phone number along with
a high-resolution (300 dpi) photo in jpg
or pdf formats, if available.
TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE PRESS RELEASES
• Ask yourself, “What am I trying to accomplish
with this release?” The most effective releases
appeal to the market we serve and inform
readers about important developments or
events.
• Keep the release short — one page maximum.
Double check your spelling, dates, phone
number and event times.
• Send your release at least three weeks in
advance. Allow ample time for our staff to
research any information and to follow-up on
a potential story.
• Keep in mind that many Corridor businesses
are competing for limited space in each
edition. Don’t be discouraged; it may run in a
later edition. Editor reserves the right to select
press releases most beneficial to our readers.
Send to: news@corridorbusiness.com
Subject: PRESS RELEASE
The CBJ welcomes guest column
submissions from readers in our
community. These pieces, which run
on our editorial page, should deal with
an issue of local interest and share the
author’s expertise and opinions about
that issue. These are not advertisements
for a business or service; rather, they
should educate and inform readers.
TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE GUEST COLUMNS
• Articles should speak to our readers who are
typically owners, executives and managers of
businesses in the Corridor.
• Ideal length of a guest column is 600-700
words, typed. Submissions should include
the author’s photo and a short biography (not
included in word count).
• All submissions are subject to editing for
length and content. We cannot guarantee the
article will appear in any particular issue.
• We assume no liability, financial or otherwise,
for content of published columns. We rely on
the expertise of our authors for accuracy.
• Unless other agreements are made in
advance, we reserve the right to post articles
to our website for public use.
VOLUNTEERISM FROM PAGE 59
full-time staff of 10 people, the organization heavily depends
on volunteers to provide services such as serving
meals, managing the kitchen, picking up donations and
packing food boxes.
Similar to the value of forging relationships with clients,
Ms. Pontarelli said volunteer managers should make a concerted
effort to connect more deeply with their volunteers.
One way her organization has tried to cultivate stronger
relationships among volunteers has been taking standouts
to Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball games – special summer
outings that began about five years ago.
“We don’t want volunteers to ever feel like we’re just using
them,” Ms. Pontarelli said. “We want them to feel like
we want them to know what’s going on outside things we
need help with.”
Shannon Greene is the operations director for Ronald
McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois,
which manages a Ronald McDonald House in Iowa
City, in addition to “family rooms” and food pantries that
offer respite inside area hospitals.
She said communicating the group’s shared successes on
a regular basis and making volunteers feel like part of the
broader group likely has more long-term value.
“We know that’s not all that keeps someone at an organization,”
Ms. Greene said. “They have to feel that there is
a connection there or a tie, and that they are doing something
that’s meaningful, that’s part of a bigger piece.”
Regenia Bailey, a leadership training consultant and
CBJ columnist who specializes in nonprofit board management,
agreed that keeping volunteers informed is key
to keeping them happy. Showing them both the impact of
their work and how the entire organization benefits can
strengthen volunteer engagement, she said.
“One of the reasons people work in this sector is [because]
they’re there to make a difference,” Ms. Bailey said.
“If you feel like your work can’t make a difference or can’t
improve lives … then it can become kind of natural to feel a
little discouraged.”
The local Ronald McDonald House Charities chapter has
an annual budget close to $1 million and seven full-time
staff, in addition to about 25 part-time staff. The nonprofit
has a fluctuating volunteer force of about 120 people, meanwhile,
who are central to its operation, Ms. Greene said.
Because Ronald McDonald House Charities locally does
not have paid janitorial staff to maintain their facilities, volunteers
are responsible for cleaning its 31-room home in
Iowa City, which includes cleaning bathrooms, doing dishes
and more.
“They’re making sure the Ronald McDonald House really
feels like a home for families, because for many of them
who are here for weeks, months, or even a year or more, this
is a home for them,” Ms. Greene said. “So those resources
can in turn be used for family programs and better the facilities
for our programs.”
The nonprofit employs several methods for trying to
show its thanks to volunteers, including formal activities
like giveaways, dinner celebrations and volunteer-of-themonth
honors.
Patti Fields, who oversees community engagement for
United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties, said
those efforts are important not only for keeping volunteers,
but for finding new ones. Although most volunteers
seek out their work because they’ve been asked to,
the second most common reason they volunteer is because
someone they know had a positive experience with
the same organization.
“They are the best advocates for the mission and the
work,” Ms. Fields said. “Any organization’s biggest asset is
their reputation … what people say about their organization.
So certainly, the volunteers and what they experience
is really important.”
Ms. Greene said managers should also be conscientious
of how they communicate with volunteers. Punctuality
can be particularly important, she said, which may be as
simple as sending a quick email reply to someone inquiring
about new work opportunities or scheduling.
“If you get people that are calling and emailing and
wanting to give their time to get to you, and you don’t respond
in a timely manner … It’s such a 101 [level] thing, but
it’s really tough.” CBJ
