A Letter from the Vicar<br />
Dear Friends,<br />
As I write this letter, you cannot fail to be moved by the television<br />
news and Daily Papers reporting the terrible fire that took place at<br />
Grenfell Tower in London. The death toll is still rising and there are<br />
a number injured people, some critically still in hospital. Relatives<br />
are searching for missing people, whilst fearing the worst.<br />
Our Government is outlining the scope of the public<br />
enquiry and the time scale.<br />
Yet in the midst of all this, there are stories of bravery, of<br />
courage, of communities and people in communities<br />
coming together to support each other. Images on our television screens record the effect<br />
of this coming together, in acts of compassion, great kindness, of service, of providing<br />
support, of care and showing love. At the centre of this has been the various faith<br />
communities in the area who have organised collections, and distributions to those in<br />
need, clothing, food, financial assistance and sorting out temporary accommodation.<br />
There has been a coming together irrespective of creed or belief or unbelief, working<br />
together to help those most in need. The local parish Church near to Grenfell Tower, St.<br />
Clement’s Church opened at 3.00 am on Wednesday morning and since then help has<br />
poured in. In fact, there have been so many donations of clothes that they have sent them<br />
into safe storage for when they are needed.<br />
In the aftermath of such a tragedy, as those near continue to provide the support that will<br />
be needed for many years to come, something that we can all do is to pray. To pray for<br />
the community as whole, to pray for those who have lost their lives, for those who are<br />
injured, and beginning what will be a difficult journey and to thank God for all who<br />
have come together to offer support in any way.<br />

SUMMER <strong>2017</strong> ISSUE 132<br />
‘Thy Kingdom Come’ Beacon Event,<br />
Lincoln Cathedral.<br />
People from around the diocese gathered in Lincoln Cathedral on Saturday<br />
evening (3rd June <strong>2017</strong>) for an evening of celebration, praise and prayer as<br />
part of Thy Kingdom Come <strong>2017</strong>.<br />
One of many Beacon Events taking place around the world, the Worship<br />
Team from St Swithin’s Church in Lincoln led the worship, with the event<br />
also including short films and opportunities for those gathered to pray for<br />
loved ones and local, national and international concerns.<br />
In his address, the Bishop of Lincoln spoke on the subject of prayer,<br />
reflecting that “Prayer is a means of building our friendship with God, built<br />
up over time, nurtured by spending time waiting in his presence, putting in<br />
the hours, which any good, healthy relationship needs.”<br />
Prayer was at the very heart of the evening: those gathered were invited<br />
to stand and face north, south, east and west in the offering of prayers for<br />
the world, and later there was time to light candles, to pray around the<br />
font, to walk a labyrinth and for people to be anointed with holy oil.<br />
As the evening drew to a close, crosses decorated with prayers and images<br />
showing local communities and activities were processed down the nave, a<br />
visible sign and reflection of all that Thy Kingdom Come <strong>2017</strong> has brought<br />
to<br />
the people of our diocese and the wider world. Two photographs from<br />
activities at St Thomas’ Market Rasen were placed on these crosses to<br />
represent our community. Members of our congregation joined with people<br />
across the diocese to bring to a close this important initiative across the<br />
country. It would be good to see more of our congregation join with us in<br />
similar events in the future.<br />

Parish News<br />
Children's Society Visitor in Market Rasen<br />
In June St Thomas' had a visit by Jane Foster who is<br />
The Children's Society representative covering the<br />
diocese of Lincoln. Jane is fairly new to her post and<br />
this was a brief "getting to know you" visit. Mal and<br />
Jenny put her in the picture about The Children's<br />
Society fund raising in our Group and she met Steve<br />
and visited the Church Rooms and the Church. Jane<br />
also visited the primary school where she met<br />
Nichola Allerston and heard about the contribution<br />
the pupils at the school make to the fund raising for<br />
The Children's Society through their participation in<br />
the Christingle Service. Jane is scheduled to return to<br />
Market Rasen on 24th September to speak at the<br />
10am service and is looking forward to meeting as<br />
many TCS supporters as she can at that time.<br />
Thy Kingdom Come<br />
On the 10 days between Pentecost and Ascension we joined with many churches in the Diocese<br />
by praying ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ and praying for others to come to know Jesus. The church was<br />
open on various days and times for personal prayer with Prayer Stations set up to help us in our<br />
prayers. Thank you to those who joined in with the event. It was also lovely to have the beautiful<br />
floral arrangements which had been set up for the ‘Open Churches Weekend’.<br />
We continue to have prayer on the First Monday of the month with ‘Conversations with God’.<br />
All Welcome.<br />
Next date is 3rd July <strong>2017</strong> at 2pm.<br />

Messy Church “Thy Kingdom Come”<br />
Pentecost Celebration.<br />
We finished for the summer on a real high sending water rockets<br />
into the sky, over the yew trees and beyond, spraying water as<br />
they went. Look on St Thomas’ Facebook page to see the<br />
children, small and grown up, enjoying getting wet & imagining<br />
how Jesus’ disciples must have felt as Jesus ascended into<br />
heaven. A hidden angel painting showed Jesus ascending into<br />
heaven with angels welcoming Him. Both activities led to<br />
discussion on how the disciples were feeling - were they lonely,<br />
worried or afraid or waiting for the Holy Spirit to come?<br />

spinner game helped the<br />
families discover more<br />
about prayer.<br />
Play dough was used to make the disciples sitting in an<br />
upper room waiting for the Holy Spirit to arrive. Here<br />
we talked about could you be too old, too young, not<br />
clever enough to share the Good News of Jesus with<br />
our friends.<br />
Good News to the World game showed with mini<br />
smarties how the Good News spread across the world.<br />
It was great to welcome a new family to our Messy<br />
Church and spread the message further.<br />
Following our worship session, we had an excellent<br />
sausage and chips tea (thanks’ to King’s Street<br />
Chippy) followed by cake - a real party atmosphere<br />
ensued.<br />
Thank you to all who have helped run Messy Church.<br />
We are having a long summer break & intend to come<br />
back in the Autumn with a new programme based on “Church Celebrations” but following the<br />
same Messy Church ideals. Look for the dates in the church magazine and on the website.<br />

Mini Messy Church News<br />
Yet another busy month at Mini Messy Church. During June<br />
we have had the themes of Pentecost, Samson and the<br />
bumble bees, the healing of the paralysed man and Jesus<br />
helps a soldier. Our craft activities have been enjoyed by the<br />
children and their families that join us each week. We have<br />
made wind streamers, headbands with flames attached! (not<br />
real ones!), paper plate bumble bees, edible jelly baby<br />
(man) on a biscuit mat to name just a few. It is a real<br />
privilege for members of our church to spend time each<br />
week with such lovely families. As July approaches we are<br />
preparing for our end of year picnic in the Rectory Garden<br />
(weather permitting) which will be a time when we say<br />
goodbye to our leavers who are going to school in<br />
September. We wish the children and their families well as<br />
they leave us but do hope that they<br />
will keep in touch through our<br />
Messy Church activities, and special<br />
family services held at Easter and<br />
Christmas. Please hold them in your<br />
prayers. We hope that during their<br />
summer holidays they will be rested<br />
and refreshed. A huge thank you to<br />
our team of helpers who give their<br />
time each week to prepare our<br />
sessions together.<br />

Sunny Vale Open Garden - 5th August<br />
Ted & Chris Whaley are once again opening their garden at Sunny Vale, Willingham Road as<br />
part of the Market Rasen open gardens day on the 5th of August.<br />
We will be raising funds for St Thomas church with refreshments, home made cakes, produce<br />
and plant sales.<br />
The Garden is a half acre mixed garden with flowers, vegetables, soft and top fruit, greenhouse<br />
and poly-tunnel. Some of the features of the garden are the strips of ''cornfield wild flowers'', the<br />
dry beds in the front of the bungalow and the wildlife friendly areas.<br />
Help with the refreshments and the cake stall would be appreciated. Also we would like<br />
donations of cakes, buns, tray bakes and cookies.<br />
Hopefully the weather will be kind.<br />

Yes! It’s nearly that time of year again!<br />
Church Garden Party<br />
Saturday 15th July <strong>2017</strong><br />
We have raffle tickets to sell for a Grand Raffle to be drawn on the day. They are<br />
available at the back of the church. If you are able to take any to sell we would be most<br />
grateful. First prize is £100 followed by lots of excellent prizes that have been donated by<br />
members of our congregation.<br />
We are looking for helpers on the day. If you are able to help in anyway, please let<br />
members of the fundraising Group know. We would be most grateful. Help can be in any<br />
form – helping to move chairs, tables from church rooms, running a stall or a game,<br />
advertising the day, displaying a poster, delivering leaflets to local homes, or donating<br />
many of the things needed for the stalls.<br />
The stalls will be looking for the following items.<br />
• Gift Bag Surprises – good quality gift bags and/or prizes to go inside them. – Liz<br />
• Cakes and biscuits – on the day please!<br />
• Books – Tony or Chris<br />
• Good quality children’s toys – Marcus /Lesley<br />
• Bottles – full please, for the bottle stall! - Jenny/ Janet<br />
• Children’s prizes - Sheila<br />
• Plants – on the day please!<br />
• These can be left at the back of church or given to the stall holders<br />
If you would like to run another stall which we don’t presently have please let us know.<br />

Market Rasen Primary School News<br />
Welcome to this term’s contribution to the Parish News. The end of the school year is fast<br />
approaching and we are busy as ever with lots of exciting things planned for the children.<br />
Year One and Two celebrated their new IPC topic by coming to school with their suitcases<br />
packed ready to go on holiday. The children are also looking forward to their ‘sleepover’ exit<br />
day with the opportunity to spend the evening at school with lots of fun planned.<br />
On Thursday 16 th June, the Year Five and Six children visited London for the day where they<br />
had a fantastic time visiting the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. As ever,<br />
our children were a credit to us and have enjoyed sharing what they were doing with us back<br />
at school. Our Year Six children have started rehearsals for their play and are excited to<br />
perform at the Festival Hall in a couple of weeks.<br />
We have recently celebrated our Religious Education week focusing on the key themes of<br />
Understanding Christianity. We had lots of visitors from local and Lincoln places of worship<br />
and the children had a great time studying the ‘Big Frieze’ which has resulted in creating art<br />
work to construct a large wooden cross. We are hoping to take the cross to St. Thomas’<br />
Church on Sunday 26 th June at 10.00am to include in our first Education Sunday Service.<br />
Our children will be joining the congregation for our first joint<br />
service. We look forward to as many of you as possible joining us<br />
for the service.<br />
We are very excited about our knight that we have been working<br />
on as part of the Lincoln Knight’s Trail. Our children in<br />
the federation have all been drawing<br />
representations of themselves which have been<br />
stuck onto the knight ready for him to go on<br />
display around Lincoln. Look out for him as you<br />
complete the trail, he will be in one of the key<br />
buildings in Lincoln, maybe even the Cathedral.<br />

Legsby Primary School News<br />
As the summer term races by, it’s time to reflect on all the exciting things that have been<br />
happening at Legsby School.<br />
Congratulations to Film Club who have just<br />
returned from their trip to Paris, where they<br />
screened their latest movie ‘Shadows of the<br />
Past’. Last year’s film was held in such high<br />
regard that, in an unprecedented move,<br />
Cinematheque Francaise invited us back for a<br />
second year running. We showed our film to<br />
an audience made up of groups from around<br />
the world and answered questions about our<br />
work. During our three day trip we also<br />
found time to see the sites and even braved<br />
the heights of the Eiffel Tower! Well done to all concerned for putting Legsby on the<br />
international map. Good luck to them on their forthcoming trips to the Edinburgh Film Festival<br />
and the British Film Institute in London where they will also be showing their film.<br />
For those that didn’t go to Paris, there was a brilliant trip to<br />
Sundown Adventure Park! The children were thrilled by the<br />
experience, and it was lovely for the adults to hear such<br />
positive comments about the behaviour of Legsby School<br />
from members of the public. Year 1 was particularly fond of<br />
the ball pool!<br />
Our school continues to grow and we have a fabulous<br />
addition to the outside area – in the form of Legsby Lodge!<br />
This brilliant National Lottery funded project not only<br />
provides an exciting area for play and exploration – but will<br />
also be a great space for guided reading and creative writing.<br />
We have a packed schedule in the run up to the holidays, with<br />
Key Stage 2 versus parents rounders match, the school fete<br />
and various other surprises for the children. Please check our<br />

And finally, a big thank you to all parents, carers and volunteers who have shown such<br />
fabulous support to the school to make this year such a success. We look forward to working<br />
with you again in the autumn under the new Co Headship of Miss Dabb and Mr Murray. Have<br />
a lovely summer!<br />
