SUMMER 2017 ISSUE 132
A Letter from the Vicar
Dear Friends,
As I write this letter, you cannot fail to be moved by the television
news and Daily Papers reporting the terrible fire that took place at
Grenfell Tower in London. The death toll is still rising and there are
a number injured people, some critically still in hospital. Relatives
are searching for missing people, whilst fearing the worst.
Our Government is outlining the scope of the public
enquiry and the time scale.
Yet in the midst of all this, there are stories of bravery, of
courage, of communities and people in communities
coming together to support each other. Images on our television screens record the effect
of this coming together, in acts of compassion, great kindness, of service, of providing
support, of care and showing love. At the centre of this has been the various faith
communities in the area who have organised collections, and distributions to those in
need, clothing, food, financial assistance and sorting out temporary accommodation.
There has been a coming together irrespective of creed or belief or unbelief, working
together to help those most in need. The local parish Church near to Grenfell Tower, St.
Clement’s Church opened at 3.00 am on Wednesday morning and since then help has
poured in. In fact, there have been so many donations of clothes that they have sent them
into safe storage for when they are needed.
In the aftermath of such a tragedy, as those near continue to provide the support that will
be needed for many years to come, something that we can all do is to pray. To pray for
the community as whole, to pray for those who have lost their lives, for those who are
injured, and beginning what will be a difficult journey and to thank God for all who
have come together to offer support in any way.
Every Blessing
‘Thy Kingdom Come’ Beacon Event,
Lincoln Cathedral.
People from around the diocese gathered in Lincoln Cathedral on Saturday
evening (3rd June 2017) for an evening of celebration, praise and prayer as
part of Thy Kingdom Come 2017.
One of many Beacon Events taking place around the world, the Worship
Team from St Swithin’s Church in Lincoln led the worship, with the event
also including short films and opportunities for those gathered to pray for
loved ones and local, national and international concerns.
In his address, the Bishop of Lincoln spoke on the subject of prayer,
reflecting that “Prayer is a means of building our friendship with God, built
up over time, nurtured by spending time waiting in his presence, putting in
the hours, which any good, healthy relationship needs.”
Prayer was at the very heart of the evening: those gathered were invited
to stand and face north, south, east and west in the offering of prayers for
the world, and later there was time to light candles, to pray around the
font, to walk a labyrinth and for people to be anointed with holy oil.
As the evening drew to a close, crosses decorated with prayers and images
showing local communities and activities were processed down the nave, a
visible sign and reflection of all that Thy Kingdom Come 2017 has brought
to
the people of our diocese and the wider world. Two photographs from
activities at St Thomas’ Market Rasen were placed on these crosses to
represent our community. Members of our congregation joined with people
across the diocese to bring to a close this important initiative across the
country. It would be good to see more of our congregation join with us in
similar events in the future.
Parish News
Children's Society Visitor in Market Rasen
In June St Thomas' had a visit by Jane Foster who is
The Children's Society representative covering the
diocese of Lincoln. Jane is fairly new to her post and
this was a brief "getting to know you" visit. Mal and
Jenny put her in the picture about The Children's
Society fund raising in our Group and she met Steve
and visited the Church Rooms and the Church. Jane
also visited the primary school where she met
Nichola Allerston and heard about the contribution
the pupils at the school make to the fund raising for
The Children's Society through their participation in
the Christingle Service. Jane is scheduled to return to
Market Rasen on 24th September to speak at the
10am service and is looking forward to meeting as
many TCS supporters as she can at that time.
Thy Kingdom Come
On the 10 days between Pentecost and Ascension we joined with many churches in the Diocese
by praying ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ and praying for others to come to know Jesus. The church was
open on various days and times for personal prayer with Prayer Stations set up to help us in our
prayers. Thank you to those who joined in with the event. It was also lovely to have the beautiful
floral arrangements which had been set up for the ‘Open Churches Weekend’.
We continue to have prayer on the First Monday of the month with ‘Conversations with God’.
All Welcome.
Next date is 3rd July 2017 at 2pm.
Messy Church “Thy Kingdom Come”
Pentecost Celebration.
We finished for the summer on a real high sending water rockets
into the sky, over the yew trees and beyond, spraying water as
they went. Look on St Thomas’ Facebook page to see the
children, small and grown up, enjoying getting wet & imagining
how Jesus’ disciples must have felt as Jesus ascended into
heaven. A hidden angel painting showed Jesus ascending into
heaven with angels welcoming Him. Both activities led to
discussion on how the disciples were feeling - were they lonely,
worried or afraid or waiting for the Holy Spirit to come?
Painting “Amen” onto
bread with milk & then
toasting (followed by
eating it of course),
spiral prayer plates and
t h e L o r d ’s P r a y e r
spinner game helped the
families discover more
about prayer.
Play dough was used to make the disciples sitting in an
upper room waiting for the Holy Spirit to arrive. Here
we talked about could you be too old, too young, not
clever enough to share the Good News of Jesus with
our friends.
Good News to the World game showed with mini
smarties how the Good News spread across the world.
It was great to welcome a new family to our Messy
Church and spread the message further.
Following our worship session, we had an excellent
sausage and chips tea (thanks’ to King’s Street
Chippy) followed by cake - a real party atmosphere
ensued.
Thank you to all who have helped run Messy Church.
We are having a long summer break & intend to come
back in the Autumn with a new programme based on “Church Celebrations” but following the
same Messy Church ideals. Look for the dates in the church magazine and on the website.
Mini Messy Church News
Yet another busy month at Mini Messy Church. During June
we have had the themes of Pentecost, Samson and the
bumble bees, the healing of the paralysed man and Jesus
helps a soldier. Our craft activities have been enjoyed by the
children and their families that join us each week. We have
made wind streamers, headbands with flames attached! (not
real ones!), paper plate bumble bees, edible jelly baby
(man) on a biscuit mat to name just a few. It is a real
privilege for members of our church to spend time each
week with such lovely families. As July approaches we are
preparing for our end of year picnic in the Rectory Garden
(weather permitting) which will be a time when we say
goodbye to our leavers who are going to school in
September. We wish the children and their families well as
they leave us but do hope that they
will keep in touch through our
Messy Church activities, and special
family services held at Easter and
Christmas. Please hold them in your
prayers. We hope that during their
summer holidays they will be rested
and refreshed. A huge thank you to
our team of helpers who give their
time each week to prepare our
sessions together.
Sunny Vale Open Garden - 5th August
Ted & Chris Whaley are once again opening their garden at Sunny Vale, Willingham Road as
part of the Market Rasen open gardens day on the 5th of August.
We will be raising funds for St Thomas church with refreshments, home made cakes, produce
and plant sales.
The Garden is a half acre mixed garden with flowers, vegetables, soft and top fruit, greenhouse
and poly-tunnel. Some of the features of the garden are the strips of ''cornfield wild flowers'', the
dry beds in the front of the bungalow and the wildlife friendly areas.
Help with the refreshments and the cake stall would be appreciated. Also we would like
donations of cakes, buns, tray bakes and cookies.
Hopefully the weather will be kind.
Market Rasen Primary School News
Welcome to this term’s contribution to the Parish News. The end of the school year is fast
approaching and we are busy as ever with lots of exciting things planned for the children.
Year One and Two celebrated their new IPC topic by coming to school with their suitcases
packed ready to go on holiday. The children are also looking forward to their ‘sleepover’ exit
day with the opportunity to spend the evening at school with lots of fun planned.
On Thursday 16 th June, the Year Five and Six children visited London for the day where they
had a fantastic time visiting the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. As ever,
our children were a credit to us and have enjoyed sharing what they were doing with us back
at school. Our Year Six children have started rehearsals for their play and are excited to
perform at the Festival Hall in a couple of weeks.
We have recently celebrated our Religious Education week focusing on the key themes of
Understanding Christianity. We had lots of visitors from local and Lincoln places of worship
and the children had a great time studying the ‘Big Frieze’ which has resulted in creating art
work to construct a large wooden cross. We are hoping to take the cross to St. Thomas’
Church on Sunday 26 th June at 10.00am to include in our first Education Sunday Service.
Our children will be joining the congregation for our first joint
service. We look forward to as many of you as possible joining us
for the service.
We are very excited about our knight that we have been working
on as part of the Lincoln Knight’s Trail. Our children in
the federation have all been drawing
representations of themselves which have been
stuck onto the knight ready for him to go on
display around Lincoln. Look out for him as you
complete the trail, he will be in one of the key
buildings in Lincoln, maybe even the Cathedral.
SUMMER 2017 ISSUE 132
Legsby Primary School News
As the summer term races by, it’s time to reflect on all the exciting things that have been
happening at Legsby School.
Congratulations to Film Club who have just
returned from their trip to Paris, where they
screened their latest movie ‘Shadows of the
Past’. Last year’s film was held in such high
regard that, in an unprecedented move,
Cinematheque Francaise invited us back for a
second year running. We showed our film to
an audience made up of groups from around
the world and answered questions about our
work. During our three day trip we also
found time to see the sites and even braved
the heights of the Eiffel Tower! Well done to all concerned for putting Legsby on the
international map. Good luck to them on their forthcoming trips to the Edinburgh Film Festival
and the British Film Institute in London where they will also be showing their film.
For those that didn’t go to Paris, there was a brilliant trip to
Sundown Adventure Park! The children were thrilled by the
experience, and it was lovely for the adults to hear such
positive comments about the behaviour of Legsby School
from members of the public. Year 1 was particularly fond of
the ball pool!
Our school continues to grow and we have a fabulous
addition to the outside area – in the form of Legsby Lodge!
This brilliant National Lottery funded project not only
provides an exciting area for play and exploration – but will
also be a great space for guided reading and creative writing.
We have a packed schedule in the run up to the holidays, with
Key Stage 2 versus parents rounders match, the school fete
and various other surprises for the children. Please check our
website for details.
And finally, a big thank you to all parents, carers and volunteers who have shown such
fabulous support to the school to make this year such a success. We look forward to working
with you again in the autumn under the new Co Headship of Miss Dabb and Mr Murray. Have
a lovely summer!
